Joe Olivares

ABERNATHY - Graveside services for Joe Olivares, 85, of Abernathy will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in Abernathy cemetery with the Rev. Joe Olivares Jr. officiating.

Arrangements are under the direction of Abell Funeral Home of Abernathy.

He died Wednesday, Nov. 29, 2000, at his home.

He was born Jan. 29, 1915, in Corpus Christi. He married Mary Lucio on May 25, 1943, in Corpus Christi. He moved his family to Abernathy in 1966 from Shallowater. He was a farmer prior to his retirement.

A son, Jimmy, died in April 1979.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Joe of Corpus Christi and Lee of Yuma, Ariz.; two daughters, Julia Jara of Lubbock and Tillie Vega of Abernathy; a brother, Doro of Denver, Colo.; 12 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

Lisa Douglas

Lisa Logan Douglass, 50, of Lubbock passed away on Jan. 14, 2008.

She attended Western Hills and received a nursing degree from South Plains College.

She is survived by Michael Qualls; daughter Linda Riegel; sons Bubba and Lance Burleson, and Randall Douglass; grandchildren, Stephanie, Anthony, Steven, Bobby, and Issac all of Lubbock; brother Will Logan of Sparks, NV. She was preceded in death by her parents, Willard and Francie Logan, and sister Lora Logan also of Lubbock.

Graveside services will be held at the City of Lubbock cemetery at 1 p.m. on Friday Jan. 18, 2008.

Charlene Perry

Charlene Perry, 56, of Lubbock passed away in Little Rock, Ark. on Jan. 14, 2008 after a courageous battle with cancer. Born to Charles T. and Catherine (Welch) Yeary, Charlene grew up in Lubbock and graduated from Lubbock High in 1970. She married Ronald Perry on May 6, 1972.

Charlene was employed with Mattel Toy Company as a sales representative for ten years.

A dedicated wife and loving mother, she was an active member of the PTA, serving as President at Wheelock Elementary School. She was both a teacher and Children's Director at Elgin Ave. Baptist Church and a member of Monterey Baptist Church.

Left to cherish her memory is her husband of 35 years, Ronald; son Chase and wife Sarah Perry of Lubbock; sister Katherine and husband Larry Hill of Lubbock; nephews Chuck and wife Amy Hill of North Richland Hills, and Brent Hill of Houston. She will be sadly missed by her family and all those who knew her.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 19, 2008 at Monterey Baptist Church with Jim Brown officiating. Serving as casket bearers will be Chuck, Brent and Christopher Hill, Chris McCartor, Tim Byers, and Dennis Jones.

Entombment will follow at Resthaven Mausoleum. Visitation will be today from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at Resthaven Funeral Home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 1599 Clifton Road, N.E., Atlanta, GA 30329.

Mitzi Barber

A gathering of family and friends for Mitzi Barber will gather to reminisce her 42 years of life this evening from 6-8 p.m. at Lake Ridge Chapel and Memorial Designers. A Celebration of her life will be Saturday, Jan. 19, 2008 at 11 a.m. in the Lake Ridge Chapel with the Rev. Matt Rice officiating. Committal service will follow in Peaceful Gardens Memorial Park. Mitzi died Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2008 in San Antonio.

She was born Aug. 27, 1965 in Lubbock to the late Jesse and Charlene (McKee) Brewer. She graduated from Lubbock High School and South Plains College as a Respiratory Therapist. Mitzi married Brian Barber on April 1, 1991 in Lubbock. She worked for University Medical Center in Lubbock before moving to San Antonio in 1999. In San Antonio she worked for University Hospital and was a member of the San Antonio First Church of the Nazarene. Mitzi enjoyed reading, writing and caring for others.

Survivors include her husband, Brian and a daughter, Jordan of San Antonio; a brother, Dale Brewer and wife Tammy; a sister, Charletta Durham all of Lubbock; nephews, Cody and Todd Brewer and Dustin Barber and nieces, Summer Durham and Shaaron Barber.

Robert Leroy Vickers

Robert Leroy Vickers was born Dec. 30, 1926, in Clovis, New Mexico, to Robert and Estelle Vickers. He grew up in Clovis during the Depression and early years of World War II and in August 1944 enlisted in the US Navy where be became a Fireman 1st Class, training in San Diego, California and Gulfport, Mississippi prior to going overseas. He served in the Asiatic Pacific Theater on Guam at US Naval Base Hospital #18 and US Fleet Hospital #103 from early 1945 until he was released from Active Duty on July 8, 1946. He continued in the US Naval Reserve until 1955. He returned home and went to mechanics school in Chicago, prior to entering Eastern New Mexico College where he studied mathematics. While in Portales, New Mexico, he met and married Barbara Jean Rogers on May 16, 1949. From that time until 1957, he worked as a painter and in retail business, until he began his life's work with General Telephone and Electronics (now Verizon), where he worked from 1957 until his retirement in 1987. He began as a draftsman and retired as the Chief Engineer of GTE Southwest.

To Leroy and Barbara were born four children: Michael, Lonnie, Constance (Connie), and David. During their life together, Barbara and Leroy lived in Clovis, New Mexico; Brownfield; Texarkana; San Angelo; Euless; Ruidoso, New Mexico; and finally Lubbock. Raised in a church-going environment, Leroy began regular church attendance in 1964 in Texarkana and there confessed his faith in Christ and was baptized into Him in 1966. Always a very moral man and a person of high integrity, he began faithful service in the Lord's Church, where he served as a deacon and an elder in the Colorado and Jackson Street congregation.

Leroy experienced serious health problems in his last 20 years of life, but never complained up to the end. He devoted himself to caring for his wife and in later years enjoyed woodworking and working in his yard. He was deeply devoted to God, family, and Country even to the end, as a faithful Christian, devoted son, husband, father, and grandfather. He worked tirelessly on the Lubbock Veterans Memorial before the recent deterioration of his health.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Estelle Vickers.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Barbara Vickers and by sons, Michael Vickers and wife Kathy of Battle Creek, Michigan, Lonnie Vickers and wife Debbie of Brady, Texas, David Vickers and wife Daphnes of Decatur, Texas and a daughter Connie V. Jackson of Lubbock. He is survived by five grandchildren: Shannon Vickers of Michigan, Laura Ulbricht and husband Andrew of South Bend, Indiana, Philip Vickers and wife Bekah of Tyler, Texas, Ben Vickers, and Leah Vickers of Lubbock, Texas; one greatgrandchild, Zion Ethan Ulbricht of South Bend, Indiana. He is also survived by one sister, Frances Rodriguez and husband Manuel of Canton, Texas, a brother Jim Vickers and wife Eloise of Virginia Beach, Virginia, and a brother Bill Vickers and wife Margaret of Lake Havasu City, Arizona; and by numerous nieces and nephews.

Celebration of Life services will be held at 2 p.m., Monday, Sept. 12, 2005 at Sunset Church of Christ Chapel with Nat Cooper, officiating. Interment will follow in Sudan cemetery in Sudan. Arrangements are under the personal care of White Funeral Home of Lubbock. The family suggests memorials to: Lubbock Children's Home, 4404 Idalou Hwy., Lubbock, TX 79410, American Heart Association, 4630 50th St. Ste. 400, Lubbock, TX 79414 or Muscular Dystrophy Association, 8212 Ithaca Ave Ste D, Lubbock, TX 79423.

Bill Montgomery

Services for Ernest William "Bill" Montgomery, 70, of Crosbyton will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, Jan. 7, 2008, in the Primitive Baptist Church, in Crosbyton with Elder Tom Taylor officiating. Burial will follow in the Roaring Springs cemetery under direction of Adams Funeral Home of Crosbyton.

Bill passed away Friday, Jan. 4, 2008, at the Lubbock Heart Hospital. He was born May 14, 1937, in Sinton, to the late Edwin and Kathlyne (French) Montgomery. May 4, 1957, he married Marquitta Barton, in Lubbock. He was a 1955 graduate of Brownfield High School and attended Methodist Hospital X-Ray School in Lubbock. He worked for 50 years as a Lab and X-Ray Technician, working since 1978 at the Crosbyton Clinic Hospital. He was Methodist and moved to Crosbyton in 1978 from Ozark, Ark. He is preceded in death by three brothers Joe, Dennis and Fred Montgomery.

Survivors include his wife, Marquitta of Crosbyton; his children, Lila Bass and husband Mike of Austin, James Montgomery and wife DeLoyce of Ralls, Ginger Jerden and husband Brian of Frisco, Amy Sharp and husband Colby of Lubbock, and Jon Montgomery of Crosbyton; three brothers, Daniel, Larry and Robert Montgomery; a sister, Doris Wright; and six grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 4-5 p.m. today at Adams Funeral Home in Crosbyton.

Mildred Williams

Church service for Mildred Williams, 84, of Muleshoe, is scheduled for 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2008, at First Baptist Church in Muleshoe, with Elders Bernard Gowens and Cleveland Bass officiating. Burial will be in Muleshoe Memorial Park cemetery.

Mrs. Williams died Friday, Jan. 4, 2008, in Park View Nursing Center, in Muleshoe.

She was born May 27, 1923, in Wellington, to Charlie and Dora (Mayo) Phipps. She married Conrad Walter Williams in Stegall on Aug. 24, 1941. He preceded her in death on July 1, 1999. She was also preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Mayo Phipps and daughter-in-law, LaJean Williams.

She had been a resident of Muleshoe since May of 1997, moving from the Stegall community, where she had lived since 1925. She was a graduate of the Stegall High School, a homemaker and a member of the Primitive Baptist Church of Muleshoe. She was founder of the Muleshoe Art Association and an artist of approximately 600 paintings. In 2003, she wrote and published her autobiography, titled "My Little Prairie Home- The Story of My Life."

She is survived by her two sons, Carter Williams and Wendell Williams and wife Peggy, all of Lubbock; one daughter, Wenonah Tuttle and husband Larry of Denver, Colo.; five sisters, Daisy Beversforf of Haltom City, Mary Bandy and June Collier, both of Amarillo, Jane Houlette of Friona, and Geraldine Ferguson of Burleson; three brothers, Spurgeon Phipps of Amarillo, and E.G. Phipps and Virgil Phipps, both of Friona; four grandchildren, Chad Williams, Stephen Smith, Michael Smith, and Libby Williams; and four great-grandchildren, Brittany Williams, Sheridon Williams, Garret Williams, and Casen Smith.

Roy VanHoove

Roy Simon VanHoove, 87, passed away Jan. 4, 2008, in San Antonio. He was born to Bura Weaver and Roy S. VanHoove on March 4, 1920, in Electra.

Roy graduated from the University of North Texas in Denton and the University of Texas in Austin. He did doctoral work at the University of Iowa. Roy's life work was in Special Education. He served as Director of Special Education in the Lubbock Public Schools; Director of In-Service Training for Travis State School; and also taught public school in Lamesa, Monahans, Waco, and Austin and college courses at Baylor, Sul Ross, and Texas Tech.

His wife of 53 years, Donna Dawson VanHoove preceded him in death in 2003. Their daughters, Dr. Susanna Duckworth lives in Oxford, N.C. and Elizabeth Basden in San Antonio; and son, Roy S. VanHoove III lives in Comanche.

He served God with his many talents in church. The thrill of his life was helping high school dropouts get their GED. As a master teacher all his life, Roy made a difference to people around him. He was unfailingly kind and gentle and generous.

The graveside service will be at 1 p.m. Jan. 7, 2008, at Austin Memorial Park, in Austin. The family requests memorials be made to University of North Texas, Green Brigade Marching Band, P.O. Box 311220, Denton, Texas 76203-1220.

Tom Malone

Thomas "Tom" Malone, 76, of Poulsbo, Wash., died December 3, 2007, in Bremerton, Wash. Tom was born Nov. 23, 1931, in Amarillo. He served with the US Air Force during the Korean Conflict. On Aug. 31, 1952, Tom married Arlene Loofbourrow in Santa Cruz, Calif. Tom was an independent Insurance Broker and one of the last Independent Cotton Gin Owner/Operators in West Texas. Tom and Arlene raised their family in Lubbock. Upon retiring, Tom and Arlene moved to Port Ludlow, Wash., where they resided until January 2007, when they moved to Poulsbo, Wash. Tom enjoyed golf, fishing, cooking, boating and was an avid woodworker. Tom was a loving husband to Arlene; caring father to Shelli (Ron) Simons, of Lubbock, Tom Malone, Jr. (Gina) of Spanish Fork, Utah, and Jim (Debbie) Malone, of Maple Valley, Wash.; grandfather of nine and great-grandfather of one. A funeral service was held at Poulsbo Mortuary. Burial followed at Cherry Grove Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be given to Multiple Sclerosis Foundation or Northwest Kidney Foundation.
