Marvin Autry Johnston
Marvin Autry Johnston was born on Feb. 7, 1922 in Mexia, Texas, and passed away March 20, 2008, at his home in Lubbock.
Marvin served with the U.S. Navy from 1941 to January, 1947. He was awarded eleven Battle Stars for action in the Asiatic Pacific Campaign, including Pearl Harbor and Midway, and one Star for the European African Campaign. He was awarded the Purple Heart for wounds he received while serving on the U.S.S. Enterprise during the battle of Santa Cruz Islands.
Marvin was a police officer for the City of Lubbock until 1951 when he was hired by South Plains Telephone Co-op. He then worked for various telephone coops in West Texas. He was president and general manager of Eastern Illinois Telephone Company from 1957 to 1960.
When he was forty years old, he enrolled in the Texas Tech School of Business and graduated with a Doctorate degree in 1971. He was a member of Beta Alpha Psi, Beta Gamma Sigma and Phi Kappa Phi.
From 1971 to 1990 Marvin was Professor of Accounting and Computer Science at Southwest Texas State University. He was primarily responsible for the design and implementation of the Management Information System degree program at Southwest Texas State University. He was awarded the title of Professor Emeritus in October, 1991.
He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Gurty, Allison Johnston; his son. Dennis and his wife, Regina, of Lubbock; grandsons, Joseph and his wife, Shannon, and Michael, all of Arlington; his brothers, Mahlon O. Johnston and wife, Billie, Melvin P. Johnston and wife, Oma, all of Lubbock, and James L. Johnston and wife, Joanne, of Costa Mesa, Calif.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Elmer A. and Eula Hazelwood Johnston; two sisters, Pearl White and Sue Perry.
The family would like to express special appreciation to his caregivers, Suzanne Doyal, Zibby Brown, Maxine Ballard and Laurie Shaw.
The family will receive visitors Sunday, from 4 until 5 p.m. at Resthaven Funeral Home. The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. on March 24, 2008, at Resthaven's Abbey Chapel, with Dr. Curtis Sellers officiating. Burial will be at the City of Lubbock cemetery.
Memorials may be sent to the First Church of the Nazarene building fund.
Ruby Helen Goodwin
Funeral services for Ruby Helen Goodwin, 84, of Levelland, will be 4 p.m., Monday March 24, 2008, at the Cactus Drive Church of Christ with Wayne Horton and Bob Reynolds officiating. Burial will follow in the City of Levelland cemetery under direction of George Price Funeral Home. Visitation will be 4 - 6 p.m., Sunday, March 23, 2008, at the funeral home. She died at 6:30 p.m. Friday, March 21, 2008, at Covenant Hospital Levelland.
She was born to J. J. and Mattie Lou Perdue on Jan. 26, 1924, in El Reno, Okla. She married
Jesse James Goodwin, Jr. on Dec. 30, 1944, and they have made Levelland their home since 1961. She was a member of the Cactus Drive Church of Christ and a dedicated Christian, homemaker, wife, mother, and grandmother.
She is survived by her husband of 63 years, Jess Goodwin; two sons, Jesse James Goodwin, III, and Gregory Joel Goodwin, both of Cleveland, Texas; a daughter, Gwyn Goodwin, of Cleveland, Texas; a daughter-in-law, Frances Goodwin, of Austin; a sister, Juanita Stretch, of Jacksonville, Fla.; and three grandchildren, Mark Goodwin Murray, Will T. Goodwin, and Jesse James Goodwin, IV.
Wanda Howard
Graveside services for Wanda Howard, 69, of Lubbock will be 10 a.m. Monday, March 24, 2008, at Resthaven Memorial Park with Jim Brewer officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Sanders Funeral Home.
Wanda died on Thursday, March 20, 2008. She was born Jan. 25 1939, to Armor and Estelle Welch. She graduated from Lubbock High School and married
J. R. Howard, Feb. 2, 1957. He preceded her in death on May 14, 2006.
She was also preceded in death by two daughters, Lisa Renae and Michelle Howard.
Wanda enjoyed music, baking, and cooking for family and friends, going to her granddaughter's music concerts and watching her grandson play baseball.
She was a member of the South Plains Church of Christ.
Her survivors include a son, Matt Howard and his wife, Janice, of Lubbock; two grandchildren, Emily and Garrison; and a brother, Sunny and his wife, Barbara.
Memorials are suggested to the South Plains Church of Christ or Lubbock Children's Home.
Roxie Meeks Young
Services for Roxie Meeks Young, 78, of Slaton, will be 1:30 p.m., Saturday, March 22, 2008, in Englunds Chapel, with burial following in Englewood cemetery, under the direction of Englunds Funeral Service of Slaton. Roxie died Thursday, March 20, 2008.
Roxie was born Dec. 6, 1929 in Flomot. She attended Santa Anna and Slaton High Schools. She married
Charles B Meeks on Sept. 1, 1948, in Slaton. Charles preceded her in death Aug. 26, 1986. She was also preceded in death by a son, Steve Meeks, on Jan. 21, 2005.
Roxie married
Henry Young on June 8, 2002, in Slaton. Henry preceded her in death on Nov. 8, 2006.
She worked for the Slaton School Cafeteria, Dave Sanders Grocery, Citizens Bank and over 20 years with United Supermarket in Slaton, retiring in 1993.
Her survivors include her daughter, Barbara Vermillion and husband, James, of Hot Springs, Ark.; two sons, Byron "Oscar" Henderson, of Dallas, and Kevin and wife, Linda Meeks, of Lubbock; 12 grandchildren; and 11 great grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to Slaton's Senior Citizens "Meals on Wheels".
Mary Lucile Beaty
Graveside services for Mary Lucile Beaty, 94, of Waco will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Ropesville cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Friday at Franklin-Bartley Funeral Home. Mrs. Beaty died March 24, 2008 in Waco.
She was born in Meridian to the late A.H. "Buddy" and Pearl Wilson Turner. She moved to Idalou at an early age where she graduated from high school. She attended Texas Tech for one year. Mary Lou moved to Levelland in 1934 where she met and married
Willie Lowell Beaty on June 9, 1935. He preceded her in death on Aug. 31, 2005. She moved to Ropesville in March of 1938 to what was known as the Ropesville project. They lived from 1956 until 1960 in Wilcox, Ariz. when they then moved to Brownfield. They retired to Wolfforth until 2001 when they moved to Waco to join their daughter and son-in-law. Mary and Lowell operated a grain elevator until retirement. Lowell and Mary Traveled extensively in their travel trailer and for many years and were members of the Wally Bynum Airstream for 22 years and often recalled these years as the "best years of their lives." She was a life long member of the Methodist Church.
Survivors include a daughter, Karen Spruill and husband Robert of Hewitt; grandchildren Rome Clem of Memphis, Tenn., Justin Clem and wife Tammy of Sparks, Nev., Shawn Spruill of St. Louis, Mo., and Brian Spruill of Keller; great-grandchildren, Justin Roach Clem and LaSchelle Clem of Sparks, Nev. and Nicholas, Nathan, and Natalie Clem of Memphis, Tenn.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A daughter, Vickie Lyn, one sister, and three brothers preceded Mary in death.

Lee Cody
Lewis Leroy Cody, 98, of Lubbock died Tuesday, March 25, 2008. Born in Lone Oak, Texas to Allen Lewis and Kitty Jo (Hardin) Cody, he grew up on a farm and graduated from Lone Oak High School. Cody moved to Lubbock to attend Texas Tech in 1928 as one of the school's first scholarship recipients. He was a life-long employee of Baldridge Bakery, except working for four years in the defense industry to support the war effort. Cody married
Rachel Hively on April 8, 1938.
They bought a home in 1949 and Cody brought the first redbud trees to the Lubbock area for his yard at 3607 28th Street. An avid sportsman, Cody enjoyed hunting, fishing, and Texas Tech basketball. He remained active all his life, celebrating his 90th birthday by cutting a cord of firewood. He is remembered by friends and family for his keen sense of humor and boundless energy. Left to cherish his memory are his wife of almost 70 years, Rachel Cody of Lubbock; daughters, Barbara Cody of Dallas, and Sara Cody and husband Steven Berry of Santa Fe, N.M.; grandson, Brad Spencer of Santa Fe, N.M.; and sister, Hatty Jo McKinnon of Oklahoma City, Okla. Cody is preceded in death by his parents; brother, Robert Haskell Cody; and sister, Inez Chapman.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, March 28, 2008, at Westminster Presbyterian Church. Interment will follow at Resthaven Memorial Park. Visitation will be today from 6 -7:30 p.m. at Resthaven Funeral Home.

Birdie Mae Godfrey
Birdie Mae Godfrey, 98, formerly of Hart, passed away on Tuesday, March 25, 2008, at Prairie House Living Center, in Plainview. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday, March 28, 2008, at the First Baptist Church in Hart, with Rev. Matt Baird officiating. Burial will follow in Hart cemetery under the direction of Kornerstone Funeral Directors of Plainview.
Birdie was born on Jan. 18, 1910, in Ardmore, Okla., to Frank and Bertha Conard. She grew up in Oklahoma. They moved to Olton in 1937 and then to Hart in 1942. She worked as a cafeteria supervisor for Hart ISD for many years. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Hart and the Good Neighbor Club.
She married
Carl Godfrey on Dec. 31, 1927, in Kiowa County, Okla. He preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by her parents; four brothers, Roy, Ernest, Tex, and Wilbur Conard; and four sisters, Ovella Burrus, Ella Higdon, Vinnie Woodward, Christine Davis.
Survivors include two sons, Charles Jack Godfrey of Plainview and Danny Godfrey of Plainview; two great-grandsons, Mike Godfrey of Georgetown and Jimmy Godfrey of Lubbock; and one great great-grandson, Justin Godfrey of Georgetown.
The family suggests memorials to the Hart cemetery Association or the First Baptist Church of Hart.
Rosa Torres
Funeral services for Rosa Torres, 58, of Lubbock will be at 10 a.m. Friday, March 28, 2008, at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, with Deacon Alfredo Jaime officiating.
Rosary will be at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 27, 2008, at Guajardo Funeral Chapels. Burial will be at Peaceful Gardens cemetery under the direction of Guajardo Funeral Chapels. She died on Monday, March 24, 2008 at University Medical Center. She was born on July 30, 1949 in San Diego, Texas.
Survivors include Jose Banda; three daughters, Elizabeth Hernandez, Irma Alexander and Belinda Lucero; one son, Martin Torres II; one step-daughter, Dorothy Camargo; six brothers; one sister; 15 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
