Joseph Harold Boop
Joseph Harold Boop, 86, passed away peacefully in Lubbock on Sunday morning Jan. 27, 2008 following a long, courageous and determined battle with Alzheimer's.
Joe was born Jan. 7, 1922 in Canton, Ohio to his parents Joseph Edward and Iva McLaughlin Boop. He graduated from McKinley High School in Canton. Joe made the National Honor Society, was the junior class President, the senior class Vice-President, while playing both basketball and volleyball. His yearbook refers to him as "McKinley's most popular bashful boy". He went on to graduate from the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD in 1945. He did post-graduate work at Cornell University in electrical engineering in 1951-52 and was a member of the engineering club. Overall, he proudly served over 10 years with the Navy including WW II and The Korean Conflict while aboard the USS South Dakota, USS LSM 547, USS Stanton and USS Zellars naval vessels. He also served in the Naval Reserves and attained the rank of Lt. Commander upon retiring from service in 1965.
After the Navy, Joe worked as an electrical engineer at the General Electric Corp. for 35 years in Syracuse, NY and was the manager of the Sonar Fields Program, which developed equipment for use in the Navy. While at GE he designed and built a piece of testing equipment for overseas use that was subsequently called the "Boop-a-tron".
Joe was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Lois and her husband, Dr. Robert Yeakley of Hudson, Ohio.
Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Jeanne of Cocoa Beach, Fla. and Lubbock; a son Dr. James Boop and his wife Linda of Lubbock; numerous in-laws, nieces and nephews in the U.S. and Canada.
Joe met the woman of his dreams Jeanne, a R.N. from Montreal, Canada in San Francisco, Calif. while in the Navy and they were married
in 1955 in Charleston, S.C.
Joe was a brilliant, generous and extremely polite man who unconditionally loved his family and he always put them first above all else. His wife never wanted for anything. They truly had an incredible marriage and love for one another. Joe never said no. There was always time to play catch with his son or help him with his homework at all hours of the night. He was admired and well liked by all those who knew him and a hero to his family.
Joe had an amazing intellectual curiosity, which made him a voracious reader, and as a result he had an incredible knowledge in many areas. He had an extensive library of books at home and wrote his own thesaurus. It seemed that there was not anything he could not read about, learn and then do - a true engineer. And he always did it well. Among some of his accomplishments were installing a bathroom and wet bar, a 30 foot metal ham radio antenna, and the painstakingly difficult task of creating a level basketball court made of bricks laid in sand. He also enjoyed sports, the ham radio along with being a long time member of an amateur radio club, traveling, especially to Canada with his wife by car, fishing, skiing, and playing golf with his buddies in Syracuse, NY.
He and his wife retired to an oceanside condo in Cocoa Beach, Fla. in 1987 where they greatly enjoyed walks on the beach, the sounds and sights of the ocean, seafood dinners, and the numerous shuttle launches from Cape Canaveral on their nearby balcony.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 3709 19th St., PMB 445, Lubbock, TX 79410.
We will remember Joe with his handsome smile, his gentle touch and his enduring sacrifice and devotion to his family. He will be gone, but never forgotten in our hearts. Joe's final resting place will be in the Arlington National cemetery, Arlington, Va., following a private ceremony and military honors in February 2008.
