O.F. "Pete" Williams
Graveside services for O.F. "Pete" Williams, 81, of Matador will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, March 31, 2008, at the East Mound cemetery in Matador, with Johnny Morris and Winfield Davenport officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Seigler Funeral Home of Matador. Mr. Williams passed away Saturday, March 28, 2008, at the Hackberry Creek Care Center in Matador.
Pete was born May 6, 1926, in Lamar County, to Talmer Buford Williams and Velma Bell Pierce Williams. His family moved to Matador when he was a small child and has been a longtime resident. Pete owned and operated the Texaco service station in Matador for many years. Mr. Williams was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Matador, has served on the Matador City Council, and was a deputy under Sheriff Jinks Wilson. He was a former member of the Matador Jaycees. Mr. Williams was a Fire Fighter for 54 years serving in all the official positions within the Fire Dept. Pete served his country in the US Army and was a fire fighter in the Korean War conflict at Big Delta, Alaska.
He is survived by his wife, Bessie Jean of Matador; one son, Rodney Williams and wife Glenda of Matador; one daughter, Ronda Miller and husband Terry of Matador; two brothers, Jelly Williams and wife Cathy of Free Port and Bobby Williams and wife Jeanne of Matador; four grandchildren, Lindsey, Kristi, Ryan, and Brittany; two great-grandchildren, Andrew and Randa.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to the Hackberry Creek Care Center P.O. Box 651 Matador, TX 79244.
Auda Mae Aycox Norman
Auda Mae Aycox Norman, of Kerrville, passed from this life on Wednesday, March 26, 2008, at a local care facility. She was born in Purcell, Okla., on Sept. 22, 1914, to Andrew Craig and Anna Mae Cobb Aycox.
Mrs. Norman was raised on the West Texas plains, growing up in Tahoka. She always had a "chuckle" about having been selected as "Miss Tahoka" while in high school. She married
A.N. Norman, Jr. in 1938. Having lived most of her life in Texas, she also made Oklahoma and Kansas her home at different times. After some years away, she moved back to Tahoka in 1945.
Working as a legal secretary for a portion of her life, she was elected District Clerk of Lynn County in 1974. "Audie" was an avid golfer and an accomplished bridge player. She had been a Life Master of the American Contract Bridge Association since 1964 and did considerable playing in the Llano Estacado unit and the South Plains area. She was a member of the Methodist Church.
She took pride in her heritage, appreciated the strong, independent, and hard working character of the pioneers of the plains. Mrs. Norman lived her life with integrity and independence that she so admired in her parents. She was devoted to her friends, and always enjoyed a good laugh.
She is survived by one son, Jim Norman and wife Jane of Hamilton; one nephew, Craig L. Leslie and wife Lynda of Kerrville; great-nephews, Kurt and Jon Leslie and families; along with a host of many loving friends and neighbors.
Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 1, 2008, at the Tahoka City cemetery.
In lieu of floral tributes, memorials may be made in her name to the charity of one's choice.
Arrangements are under the direction and personal care of Kerrville Funeral Home.
David Peter Scruggs
David Peter Scruggs passed away on March 29, 2008 at the age of 52. He was born on July 28, 1955 in Lubbock, Texas to Lamar and Elizabeth (Romano) Scruggs.
David attended Monterey High School in Lubbock, graduating in 1973. David was an independent contractor in Lubbock.
David is survived by, his daughters, Jennifer Barnes and husband David, Jessica Kinder and husband Thomas, and Andrea Scruggs, all of Lubbock and has six grandchildren. He is also survived by one brother Michael Scruggs of Mableton, Ga.
Formal visitation will be held from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday, April 3, 2008 at White Funeral Home. Prayer Service will follow at 6 p.m. at White Memorial Chapel, in Lubbock.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 10 a.m., Friday, April 4, 2008 at the Christ the King Cathedral, 4011 - 54th St. Lubbock, with Msgr. Ben Kasteel officiating.
Arrangements are under the personal care of White Funeral Home of Lubbock.
Estelle M. Birdwell
TAHOKA - Services for Estelle M. Birdwell, 91, of Tahoka will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, July 17, 2003, at Sweet Street Baptist Church in Tahoka with Rev. Lynn Long officiating. Burial will be in Tahoka cemetery under the direction of White Funeral Home of Tahoka. She passed away Sunday, July 13, 2003, in Lubbock. She was born March 4, 1912, in Gatesville, Texas, to the late Lewis and Annie Katherine Bray Swindall. She married
C.E. (Ed) Birdwell on Jan. 21, 1936, in Royse City, Texas.
They came to the Plains in 1944, and moved to Tahoka from Wolfforth in 1949. She was a homemaker and a charter member of Sweet Street Baptist Church in Tahoka. She was preceded in death by her husband on April 18, 2002, and a son, Charles Glen Birdwell, on July 2, 1951.
Survivors include two sons, J.E. Birdwell and wife Carolyn of Lubbock; Billy Birdwell and wife Nancy of Alexandria, Va.; a daughter, Carolyn Talamantes and husband Art of Big Spring; six granddaughters, Vangie Stice, Kathy Lusk and husband Dan, Minessa Mesic, Melinda Birdwell, Tammie Birdwell, Erika Absher and husband Andrew; five great-grandchildren, Vanessa VanSlyke, Amie Pearson, David Pearson and wife Tonette, Dani Lusk, and Jonathan Lusk; and one great-great-granddaughter, Makaila VanSlyke. The family suggests memorials to Sweet Street Baptist Church, 1300 Ave. J., Tahoka, TX 79373, or a favorite charity. The family will greet friends at the funeral home Monday, July 14, from 6 to 8 p.m.
Carolann Marie Eikenhorst
On March 27, 2008, the angels came to Earth to take our angel, Carolann Marie Eikenhorst, to heaven. She passed from this life to the next in her home.
Carolann was born on Aug. 24, 1998, and in her nine short years she changed the lives of many people and touched the hearts of many more.
Though Carolann struggled daily with her physical disabilities she remained a happy, joyful child who loved everyone she met and always greeted each person with her big, beautiful smile. For those who were fortunate enough to know her, she remained a joy, a blessing, and an inspiration to us all.
We miss her each and every day however we remain strong in our faith that she is now able to dance and sing, unencumbered by her uncooperative, earthly body, and we know that all in heaven are pleased.
Carolann is survived by her mother, Tammy Marie Eikenhorst; her grandmother, Carol Eikenhorst; her great-grandfather, Dick Mitchell; great uncle, Echo Tescier; and many more beloved family members and many many dear friends.
Carolann was met in heaven by great-grandmother Marie Mitchell.
Services for Carolann Marie Eikenhorst will be 1:30 p.m. Tuesday in Oakwood United Methodist Church followed by burial in Englewood cemetery. The family will receive friends from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Rix Funeral Directors.
William Scott
MERKEL — Graveside services for William Travis "Bill" Scott, 89, of Slaton will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Rose Hill cemetery in Merkel with the Rev. Rex Mauldin officiating.
Arrangements are under the direction of Starbuck Funeral Home of Merkel.
He died Sunday, Jan. 28, 2001, in Littlefield.
He was born Oct. 4, 1911, in Eastland County. He married
Nova Lawson Scott in 1964. He worked for the Slaton Water Department for 20 years and owned Scott's Trading. He was a staff sergeant in the Army Air Corps and was a veteran of World War II. He was a Baptist.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Charles Rowan of Lubbock and James Rowan of Idalou; a brother, A.D. of Merkel; seven grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Terry R. Durrett
Graveside services for Terry R. Durrett, 67, of Lubbock will be 4 p.m. Saturday, March 29, 2008, with Jay Kelley, Minister, Austin Street Church of Christ officiating. Burial will follow in the City of Levelland cemetery under direction of George Price Funeral Home.
He died March 27, 2008 at University Medical Center in Lubbock.
Terry was born to Clyde and Lennie Durrett on Nov. 18, 1940 in Oregon. He worked for Furr's Cafeterias and later owned the East 50th Street Grocery in Lubbock. He was a member of the Church of Christ.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Carol Sanders and Joyce Ingles; a brother, Billy Durrett; and a great-granddaughter, Madison Castillo. He is survived by two sons, Randall Durrett and wife, Danetta of Lubbock and Rodney Durrett of El Paso; a daughter, Derenda Durrett of Lubbock; four brothers, Wayne Durrett of Whitharral, Wendall Durrett of Farmington, NM, Ronnie Durrett of Lubbock and Jimmy Durrett of Oregon; a sister, JoAnn Vandiver of Sulphur Springs, Texas; eight grandchildren and one great grandchild.
Alva L. Mixon
Funeral services for Alva L. Mixon, age 98, of Littlefield will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 29, 2008 at the First United Methodist Church in Amherst with Reverend Lowe Ellerbrock and Reverend Harold Harrison, officiating. Burial will follow in Littlefield Memorial Park under the direction of Hammons Funeral Home of Littlefield.
Mr. Mixon passed away March 26, 2008 at Covenant Medical Center in Lubbock. He was born Jan. 13, 1910 in Snyder, Oklahoma to J.B. and Sara Francis (Squire) Mixon. He married
Doris Nicholson on April 13, 1931 at Amherst. He farmed in Lamb County. Alva lived in Clovis for 13 years before moving to Lubbock in 1997. He enjoyed dancing, horses and spending time with his grandchildren. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Amherst. He was preceded in death by his wife, Doris, on Oct. 17, 1982; a son, Gene, on Nov. 4, 2005 and a great grandson, J.T. Mitchell on March 20, 2004.
Survivors include son, Jack and wife Sue Mixon of Lubbock, Texas; seven grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren; nine great great grandchildren.
Serving as Pallbearers: Bridger Sanders, Rowdy Sanders, Cobey Branscum, Josh Wall, Judd Perkins, and Jeff Edwards.

Oren Dean Nichols
Oren "Dean" Nichols of Levelland, 64, of Levelland passed away March 25, 2008 in Levelland.
Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Saturday, March 29, 2008 at First Baptist Church of Levelland with Brother Steve Vernon. Music by Mr. and Mrs. Patton Parish. Viewing will be Friday, March 28th from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Head Duarte Funeral Home of Levelland.
Dean was born on Sept. 7, 1943 to Mark and Ollie Nichols of Lubbock. He spent most of his childhood in Happy, graduating from Happy High School in 1962. Throughout his life he enjoyed country music, camping, hiking, and reading his collection of Western novels and history books. He was an active member of the Levelland Senior Citizens Center. He worked mainly in the oil field industry, working for Diamond Shamrock in Dumas from 1966-1975. He worked for Amoco Oil until his retirement in 1994. He married
Lydia Romo in Tucumcari, New Mexico, on Nov. 26, 2003. "Dean" was a Christian and attended Park Drive Baptist Church and St. Michael's Catholic Church of Levelland. Memorial donations may be made to Levelland Senior Citizens Center.
Survivors include spouse, Lydia Romo Nichols of Levelland; son, Randall (Joebeth) Nichols of Amarillo; daughter, Mona Nichols of Amarillo; brother, Lyndahl Nichols of Arlington; and four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Sharon Roberts.
Pallbearers will be David Romo, John Hernandez, Larry Joe Kirkland, Josh Kirkland, Lance Burt, Max Ledesma, and Kirk Nichols.
Internment will be held at 3 p.m. at Happy cemetery of Happy, Texas, under the direction of Head Duarte Funeral Home of Levelland.
