Bess Scott Hardberger
Bess Scott Hardberger passed away on Wednesday, April 9, 2008, in San Antonio, at the age of 94, due to natural causes. Her life was full and long, and she was surrounded by loved ones at her death. Friends and family remembered Mrs. Hardberger as a warm-spirited woman who dearly loved her family, nature and the church. "She was the single most cheerful person I've ever known, " said Phil Hardberger, her son and the Mayor of San Antonio. "She loved the trees and flowers here in San Antonio and always had a positive spirit."
Mrs. Hardberger was born on Dec. 22, 1913 in Burnet County. Baptized into the church at age 9, she remained a faithful church member throughout her life. She married
Homer Reeves Hardberger on Oct. 15, 1933, in Morton, at age 19. After bearing a son, Phillip Duane Hardberger, the family moved to O'Donnell in 1943. The Hardbergers gave birth to a daughter, Jan, in 1945 in Lamesa. Six years later, Mrs. Hardberger began teaching. She taught third grade for 33 years, while working her way through college. She graduated from Texas Tech University in 1955, the same year her son graduated from Baylor University. Mrs. Hardberger was active in the First Baptist Church of O'Donnell for more than 60 years. She was a founding member of the 1946 Study Club of O'Donnell, a civic organization for women, and was granted a lifetime membership.
Elaine Pearson, a dear family friend from O'Donnell, said Bess Hardberger was like a mother to her. "I lost my mother years ago and she really filled a need for me since my mother was not here, " said Pearson, who went to school with Phil Hardberger. Everybody in town loved Bess and there will certainly be a void now." Pearson said the two words that truly describe Bess Hardberger are "optimistic" and "dedicated." "What she said she would do, she would do, " Pearson said. "She always went the extra mile."
Mrs. Hardberger was preceded in death by her husband, who passed away in 1986. They were married
for 52 years. Mrs. Hardberger will be buried in O'Donnell alongside her husband. Mrs. Hardberger is survived by her son, Phil Hardberger and daughter, Jan Hardberger Peranteau; grandchildren, Kim Moser, Amy Hardberger and Jarad Peranteau; step-granddaughter, Rebecca Soto and great-grandchildren, Austin Jones and Tori Jones.
