John Elmer Pelley, Jr.

John Elmer Pelley, Jr., an officer who fought with the U.S. Armyšs famed 8th Air Force in World War II and later launched several business ventures as an entrepreneur, died in Dallas, TX on January 13th, 2003. Pelley was 80 years old.

The cause was pancreatic cancer.

Pelley, known through much of his life as "JR, " was born August 25, 1922 in Jenks, OK. He was the first child of John E. Pelley, Sr. and Daisey Pelley, the former Daisey Morton. He was a classic member of what became known as "The Greatest Generation." Pelley was raised during the Great Depression and enlisted in the army near the start of World War II. He was trained as a bombardier and served in the 391st Squadron of the 34th Bomb Group headquartered in Mendelsham, England.

Shortly before leaving for Europe, Pelley married the former Wanda Jean Graves. They had known each other since childhood in rural Oklahoma. As a Lieutenant, Pelley flew 35 combat missions in both the B-24 and B-17 bombers. His missions included air support for the D-Day invasion and numerous raids over Berlin and other Nazi industrial sites. During his service, the 8th Air Force suffered one of the highest casualty rates of any American command in Europe. On one mission, a piece of German flak shattered the nose of Pelleyšs bomber and struck him in the chest only to be stopped by his flack jacket. On what would have been his first mission, Pelley lost his position on the aircrew because of the assignment of a navigator to the mission. Later that day, the plane was shot down. The crew was held prisoner for the duration of the war.

Pelley was discharged from the Army as a Captain and settled in San Antonio, TX. There, he noticed the great shortage of automobiles in wartime America and realized the tremendous demand for cars among returning G.I.šs. A car dealership was his first business. Over nearly five decades, Pelley helped start and manage a series of businesses including a chemical service company for the oil industry, a restaurant in Lubbock, TX and a giftware distributorship in Dallas.

Pelleyšs marriage ended in divorce in 1975. The former Wanda Pelley survives, living in Sun City, FL. Pelley is also survived by; two sons, John David Pelley of Bend, OR and Scott Cameron Pelley of Great Falls, VA; a brother, William H. Pelley of Oklahoma City, OK and two grandchildren, Reece John Pelley and Blair Jane Pelley also of Great Falls.

His life ended at home, surrounded by friends and loving family. A graveside ceremony is planned for 10am, Sunday, January 19, 2003 at the Sparkman/Hillcrest Memorial Park.
