Richard Grady Sprott
Richard Grady Sprott, 76, of Arlington passed away on June 9, 2008, at Arlington Memorial Hospital.
Services are 9:30 a.m., Thursday, June 12, 2008, at Moore Memorial Chapel with interment following at Moore Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
Survivors include wife, June Denby Sprott of Arlington; daughter, Sara Demore and husband John of Arlington; son, John Hunter Sprott and Catherine Nelson of Lubbock; daughter, Allyn Toth and husband Steven of Arlington; six grandchildren, Richard DeMore, Helen DeMore, Sean Toth, Michael Toth, Alyson Toth, and Mark Toth; brother, John W. Sprott; two sisters, Pat Martin and Maryann Davidson.
Mr. Sprott graduated from Paschal High School in Ft. Worth and the University of Texas at Austin. He is a veteran of the U.S. Army. He and June were married
on September 8, 1956. He retired from the Dunlap Company as the Vice President and Corporate Secretary after 31 years of service.
Tracy Lee Byrd
Tracy Lee Byrd, 38, of Dallas and formerly of Lubbock, passed away Sunday, June 8, 2008. He was born in Lubbock on April 14, 1970. He graduated from Monterey High School in 1988, attended South Plains College and later served his country in the United States Army.
He is survived by his daughter Caitlin Byrd of Albuquerque, son Tristin Byrd of Canyon Country, Calif.; parents Carol Ann and Joe Trammell of Lubbock; father Kenneth Byrd of Denton; sister Margaret Llanas and husband Richard of San Antonio; brothers Nolas Byrd of Lubbock and Terry Trammel and wife Heidi of Baltimore, Md. Also surviving is Michelle Ahlers of New Deal and a host of other family and friends. He will be deeply missed by all those who knew and loved him.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Thursday, June 12, 2008, at Word Aflame United Pentecostal Church with Pastor Ron Cruddas officiating. Interment will follow at Resthaven Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 5:30-7:30 p.m. tonight at Resthaven Funeral Home.
Virginia James McIver
Virginia James McIver, on April 13, 1919, was born to L.E. and Maude May (Mann) James in Lone Oak. She departed this life on June 9, 2008.
Virginia grew up in Slaton. Upon completion of high school, she attended beauty school in Hobbs, New Mexico. Virginia married
Verble V. "Mac" McIver on Jan. 25, 1943, in Lubbock County. Following her husband, who was a Captain in the United States Air Force, Virginia lived in numerous states. She worked as an accountant and an interior designer in Texas, California, and Arkansas. Virginia returned to the South Plains in 2000.
Virginia was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; her brothers, Jimmy James, A.E. "Cotton" James, and Harold James; and sisters Velma Conatser and Betty Jo Denney.
She is survived by nieces and nephews, Eleanor Monigold of Horatio, Ark., Sue Jackson of Avery, Claude Fullerton Jr. of Sylmar, Calif., Richard Fullerton of Lubbock, Cindi Phillips of Lubbock, Pam Walker of Durant, Okla., and Sharon Denney of Lubbock; as well as a number of great nieces and nephews and friends.
Pall bearers are Richard Fullerton, Zachary Fullerton, Chad Ward, John "Skipper" Ward, Danny Hendrie, and Lupe Cruz.
A graveside service will be 10 a.m., Thursday, June 12th, in the City of Lubbock cemetery with a memorial service following at 11 a.m. in Faith Temple. Reverend Rick Oliphint will officiate.
James L. Davis
Our loving father, grandfather, and great grandfather departed this life Monday, June 09, 2008 at 5:08 a.m. at the age of 91. James Loyd Davis was born on July 14, 1916, in Okolona, Ark., to the late James Hiram and Mary Davis.
J.L. married
Winnifred Connell on Nov. 7, 1942, in Lubbock. They were married
62 years when she preceded him in death in 2005. J.L. served in the U.S. Army during WWII and was discharged in 1949. He owned and operated J.L. Davis House Moving in Lubbock for over 40 years.
J.L. was an avid fisherman, hunter and card player. His loving of card playing took him to his favorite vacation city of Las Vegas where he was a tournament winning hold'em player.
Survivors include two daughters, Charlotte Doyle and husband Gary, and Denise Hilliard and husband David, all of Lubbock; a son, Jimmie Davis of Lubbock; 11 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. He is also preceded in death by a daughter, Carolyn Bartlett; two sisters; and a brother.
Services will be at 2 p.m., Wednesday, June 11, 2008, at Sanders Memorial Chapel with Chaplain Les Jackson officiating. Interment will follow at Resthaven Memorial Park under the direction of Sanders Funeral Home.
Family will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday from 7-8 p.m.

Faye Harris
Faye Harris, 103, a longtime resident of Lubbock, died at her at her home in Silver Village on Saturday, surrounded by family and friends.
Born Sept. 3, 1904, in Coolidge and raised in Tehuacana, she married
Paul Harris in 1925. The couple and their daughter, Josie Lee, moved to Lubbock in 1927 from Dona, N.M. Faye worked as a Beauty Operator, Seamstress and as a Secretary for her husband's brick contracting business.
After his retirement, they owned and operated a ceramic shop until his death in 1978. Faye was active in Eastern Star and served as worthy matron in 1981. Faye continued to create many types of artwork. She enjoyed teaching and sharing her talents with others.
A member of Calvary Baptist Church, she donated stained glass windows to two of the new buildings.
She is survived by her daughter, Josie Lee Berg; son-in-law, Norman Berg; grandsons, Robert Berg, Chuck Berg and wife Melanie of Lubbock; great-granddaughters, Amy Weh, Lee Stevenson, both of Lubbock, Michelle Thulin and husband Eric of Albuquerque, N.M.; and great great-grandchildren, Brooke Stevenson, Ian, Grant and Tegan Thulin.
Services for Faye will be held 10 a.m., Wednesday, June 11 at Calvary Baptist Church, with Bruce Cotton officiating burial will follow at the City of Lubbock cemetery, under the direction of Rix Funeral Directors.
Eula Mae Joiner
Eula Mae Joiner, 88, of Lubbock, passed away Wednesday, June 4, 2008 at Covenant. Mrs. Eula Mae Joiner was born April 14, 1920 to Manuel and Maggie Foster in Forrester. Mrs. Joiner was a faithful member of Bethel AME for 45 years. She later united with the Saint John B.C. where she remained a faithful member even in her illness. Those left to cherish her memory are two grandsons, Dale (Kay) and Jeffry (Janice), both of Austin; four great-grandchildren; four great-great grandchildren; three sister-in-laws; several nieces, nephews, and a family of faith.
Service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 11, 2008 at St. John Baptist Church. Burial will follow at Peaceful Gardens Memorial Park under the direction of Griffin Mortuary.
Family will receive friends from 1-7 p.m. today at Griffin Mortuary.
Dominga Maggie Torres
Dominga "Maggie" Torres of Lubbock departed this life on June 8, 2008, at the age of 72 years. She was born on Sept. 15, 1935, to Juan G., Sr. and Guadalupe Leal in Whitchet. Ms. Torres was a life-long resident of Lubbock. Dominga was a Catholic by faith. She loved spending time with her grandchildren. They meant everything to her. She loved music and was always laughing and cutting up. Dominga lived her life to the fullest.
Those left to cherish her memory are five daughters, Gloria Capetillo of Lubbock, Isabel Flores of Amarillo, Susie Castro of Austin, Debbie Anthony of Clovis, N.M., and Linda Gonzales of Lubbock; four sons, Louis Garcia of Texarkana, Pedro Garcia of Midway, Ricky Garcia of Lubbock, and Cruz Torres, Jr. of Sanger; 35 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; six sisters, Rosa Garcia and Adelaida Oyervidez both of Lubbock, Matilde Minjarez of Mesquite, Teresa Leal, Janie Gutierrez, and Becky Rodriguez, all three of Lubbock; and one brother, Juan Leal, Jr. of Lubbock.
She is preceded in death by her mother and father; a son, Ruben Garcia; two sisters, Guadalupe Macias and Dionicia Moncibaiz; and two brothers, Domingo and Paulino Leal.
Rosary will be held at 7 p.m., Tuesday, June 10, 2008, at White Funeral Home of Lubbock. Graveside Services will be held at 1 p.m., Wednesday, June 11, 2008, at the City of Lubbock with Deacon Joe Morin officiating.
Arrangements are under the personal care of White Funeral Home of Lubbock.
Effie Lee Middlebrook
The family of Effie Lee Middlebrook celebrates a life well lived today as she went home to her Lord and Savior on Saturday, June 7, 2008 - her 91st birthday. She was born on June 7, 1917 to Chester Urbin and Ethel (Elliott) James in Lubbock. Mrs. Middlebrook attended Lubbock High School and graduated in 1935. Effie Lee married
Robert Clifton Middlebrook on January 17, 1939 in Lubbock. She was a farmer's wife, homemaker, and beloved mother and grandmother. Effie Lee was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Shallowater for over 80 years, where she used her talents as pianist and organist, and for over 40 years, she volunteered for various weddings and funerals, and to entertain her family. She was a member of the Lubbock Organ Society.
Those left to cherish her memory are one son, Marvin Doyce Middlebrook and wife, Paula of Lubbock; one daughter, Ruth Marie Enger and husband, Don of Lubbock; four grandchildren, grandson Randy and wife, Kim; granddaughter, Patti and husband James Simpson; grandson, Clay and wife Kristyn Enger; and granddaughter, Camie and husband Jay Holcombe; and eight great-grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by her mother and father; her husband, Robert Clifton Middlebrook on February 11, 1965; and one sister, Juanita Ruth Wood.
Family will greet friends Monday, June 9, 2008 from 6 to 8 p.m. at White Funeral Home. Celebration of Life Services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 10, 2008 at First Methodist Church of Shallowater with Dr. Max Browning and Rev. Everett Statler officiating. Interment will follow at the City of Lubbock cemetery.

John Henry Turner
John Henry Turner, 84, of Childress, died Sunday, June 8, 2008, in Amarillo. Visitation will be 7-9 p.m. Wednesday, June 11, 2008, at Johnson Funeral Home in Childress. Services will be 2 p.m. Thursday, June 12, 2008, at Calvary Baptist Church with Rev. Cliff Johnson officiating. Interment will be at Childress cemetery.
He was born March 22, 1924, in Childress to M.H. and Myrtle May Turner. He and former Carol Jean Woods married
July 23, 1949. John served in the Navy during WWII. After receiving his Graduate Degree in English, he was employed with Independent school districts in Carey, Kirkland, Miami, Ackerly, New Home, Meadow, Alpine and Crane as a bus driver, teacher, principal, or most proudly, as basketball coach.
John is preceded in death by his wife, Carol Jean.
He is survived by daughter, Johneen of Nations of Wichita, Kan.; sons, Radney Turner of Katy, and Ennis Turner of Amarillo; sister, Reda Cole of Ardmore, Okla.; five grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.
