He was born in Fairlie, Hunt County, on Jan. 4, 1921, the second of four children of Vincent and Ruth Warlick Carr. The family moved to Lubbock in 1932, and Warlick graduated from Lubbock High School in 1936 and from Texas Tech University with a Bachelor pf Arts degree in 1940. In both of such institutions, he and his brother, Waggoner, represented their school with considerable success as a debate team in numerous tournaments in and out of the state of Texas. Upon graduation, Warlick entered Columbia Law School, and after one year there, transferred to the University of Texas Law School, which Waggoner was attending and from which Warlick graduated in April 1947 with a degree of Doctor of Jurisprudence with Honors. His law school education was interrupted by three and one-half years of service in the United States Air Force, entering as a Private and being discharged as a Captain in the Intelligence Corps.
While in the University of Texas Law School, he was elected to The Chancellors and to the Order of the Coif and served as Student Editor of the Texas Law Review. Upon graduation, he and Waggoner started their own firm in Lubbock under the name of Carr & Carr. When Waggoner became County Attorney of Lubbock County, Warlick joined the existing firm of Bradley & Keys, Attorneys, in Lubbock.
In 1960 he became an organizing member of the firm of Key, Carr, Carr & Clark, a firm that stayed in existence, although under various names, until 2000. In that year he joined the firm of Mullin, Hoard & Brown, LLP, where he remained until his death.
Warlick Carr was widely known and recognized. Among the honors he cherished was being recognized as a Distinguished Senior Lawyer by the Lubbock County Bar Association in 1991 and Outstanding 50-Year Lawyer by the Texas Bar Foundation in 1998. He also was Paul Harris Fellow in the Lubbock Rotary Club, of which he was once President.
He was a member of the State Board of Law Examiners from 1977-1997, the last six years of which he was Chairman. Only one other attorney has ever served on the Board for a longer period of time. He was admitted to practice in all state courts, in the United States District Court for Northern District of Texas, the U.S. Court of Appeals, Fifth Circuit, and the United States Supreme Court.
In addition, he was a member of the Canadian River Municipal Water Authority, Methodist Hospital Foundation, Lubbock Area Foundation, Lubbock Symphony Board and the Lubbock Chamber of Commerce and Board of City Development.
