Pip Dawson
Phillip Herschell Dawson, 79, of Slaton, known to his friends and family as "Pip," passed away July 16, 2008. He was born December 22, 1928 to W.H. "Hammer" and Mary Dawson. Pip served in the U.S. Army from 1950-1953, and was stationed in Alaska. He married
Patsy Ann Dunlap on May 31, 1953. He retired from the Texas Highway Department of Engineering Division after more than 25 years. After retirement, he put in 20 years of service for the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
Along with Pat, he is survived by his daughter, Susie White of Shreveport, La.; sons, Phillip of Kerrville; and Jon Karl of San Antonio. Also surviving him are five grandchildren, Boots, Andrew, Bradley, Sara Dawson and Stacy Meyers; two great-grandchildren, Jordan Perry and Blake Meyers; brothers, Bill of Lubbock; Glyn of Lexington, Ky.; Ted of Arlington; and sister, Judi Miles of Buffalo Springs Lake.
Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Saturday, July 19 at the First Christian Church in Slaton.
Ricky Watson
Ricky Watson was born in Lubbock on July 20, 1948, to R.G. and Margie Curtis Watson. He married
Retha Caddell in 1968. They have two daughters, Kristina Harville and Rebeka Watson. Ricky worked for Lubbock Electric Co. until the 1980s, when he and his family moved to Galveston, where he earned his degree from the University of Texas Medical Branch, School of Allied Health in 1990. Ricky passed away on Saturday, July 12, 2008. He is survived by his parents; his spouse; his two daughters; five grandchildren; his brother Danny; his sister Penny; and many friends.
Visitation will be from 1 to 2 p.m. on Saturday, July 19, 2008 in the W.W. Rix Chapel on Broadway in Lubbock. Services will follow at 2 p.m. with James A. Whitehead officiating. Interment will take place in the City of Lubbock cemetery immediately afterwards.
The family suggests that memorials be sent to Hospice of Lubbock, P.O. Box 16800, Lubbock, Tx 79490.
Rose Phillips Ingram
Rose Phillips Ingram, a long-time resident of Lubbock, passed away on July 11, 2008 in Centennial, Colo., at age 99.
She was born in Blair, Okla., on May 9, 1909, and moved to Lubbock with her family in 1925. Rose attended Texas Tech for three years and married
Robert Ingram in 1928. She was active in the local Democratic Party, serving as precinct chairman for over thirty two years. Rose was a volunteer at Methodist Hospital for over ten years. She moved to Colorado in 1999 and had been a volunteer at Littleton Hospital in Colorado and the Veteran's Administration Hospital in Denver.
Rose was preceded in death by her husband, Robert; twin sons, Robert Lee, Jr., and Allen T.; son, Kenneth; daughter, Barbara Crary Powers; and a grandson, Robert Crary.
She is survived by a daughter, Glenda Just of Centennial, Colo.; five grandchildren, Rick Crary (and Sheryl) of Sacramento, Calif.; David Crary of San Antonio; Peter Just (and Barbara) of Birmingham, Ala.; Tracey Dever (and Scott) of Ft. Wayne, Ind.; and Vanessa Parrott (and Glen) of Castle Rock, Colo.; nine great-grandchildren; nephew, Hadley Phillips of Lubbock; dear friends, Betty Holcombe and Doris Hooper, both of Lubbock; and many other family and friends.
Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Friday, July 18, 2008 at the City of Lubbock cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Sanders Funeral Home in Lubbock.
Known as Nana to her loving family, Rose will be greatly missed by family and friends, but she has left behind beautiful memories and will live on in our hearts forever.
Marcella Patterson
Caroline Marcella Patterson, 94, of Abilene, died Wednesday, July 16, 2008, at a care center in Abilene.
The funeral service will be 10 a.m. Monday at Elmwood West United Methodist Church in Abilene. A graveside service will follow at 4 p.m. Monday in Resthaven Memorial Park in Lubbock directed by Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home, 5701 Hwy. 277 South, Abilene, Texas. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
The daughter of Cynthia (Yancy) and Jarrett Scott Pinckley, Marcella was born on September 23, 1913 in Denton County. She graduated from McMurry University, and on May 27, 1934 in Spur, married
Roy Patterson, a Methodist minister in the Northwest Texas Conference for over 38 years. She was a retired school teacher, having taught in various schools where her husband served. Since 1991, she had been a resident of Abilene, where she was a member of Elmwood West United Methodist Church.
Marcella was preceded in death by her husband, Roy Patterson, in 1988; granddaughter, Sarah Hawkins; and grandson, Foster Patterson; parents; brother, Jarrett Pinckley, Jr.; and four sisters, Fay Reeve, Ruth Pinckley, Marie Castle, and Pauline Collins.
Survivors include sons, Charles Patterson, and Tony Patterson and wife Seneca, all of Abilene; daughters, Tonya Cambridge of Billings, Mont.; Teila Aubuchon of Abilene; and Teresa Patterson and Wayne Sweeney of Matador; sister, Sue Morgan of Perryton; eight grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren.
Roxie Vogler
Funeral services for Roxie Vogler will be 10 a.m. Monday July 21, 2008 at the First Baptist Church with Curt Hamlin and Rev. Clifton Igo officiating. Burial will follow in Lamesa Memorial Park under the direction of Branon Funeral Home. Visitation will be Sunday, July 20, 2008 from 2 to 4 p.m. at the funeral home.
Roxie died on Thursday July 17, 2008 at Sage Healthcare Center in Lamesa. She was born on August 21, 1919 in East Texas to T.H. and Floy Bass. She married
Lawrence Vogler in 1938 in Lamesa.
Survivors include her special friend, Bill Wilcox; children, Lillian Holcomb and husband Vernon; Sharon Airhart and husband Quinton; David Vogler and wife Dyann; Terry Vogler and wife Denise; sisters, Gwen Benning; Gertie Ponder; Rogene Miller and husband Charles; 11 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence Vogler on March 21, 1978; her parents; and her sister, Elnora Burkhart.
Bettie Hodgin Newton
Bettie Hodgin Newton, long-time Lubbock resident, passed away on Saturday, July 5, 2008.
Bettie was born Jan. 31, 1937, in La Mesa, N.M., to Irene and Baker Ethridge. She graduated from Fabens High School in 1954 and from Texas Tech in 1958. While attending Tech, she met her first husband, Henry Louis Hodgin, Jr. They owned and operated Acid Delinters in Shallowater until his death in 1975. After his death, Bettie worked as a comptroller for several Lubbock businesses. In 1979 she married
Clifton Odell Newton, who passed away in 1994.
She was a member of Alpha Chi Omega, the Order of Eastern Star, a frequent judge at the Panhandle South Plains Fair, and a supporter of the Texas Tech Theatre.
Bettie was preceded in death by her parents; and her brother, James Ethridge. She is survived by her daughters, Claire Hodgin of Austin, Cathy Ramsey and husband Scott of Lubbock, and Janet Veal and husband Ed of Lubbock. Bettie is also survived by her sisters, Helen Sanders of Lubbock and Clara Fendley of Scottsdale, Ariz.; sister-in-law, Mae Ethridge of Lubbock; brother-in-law, Bill Hodgin and wife Janet; grandchildren, Sheri Dyer, Derrick Ramsey, Jarrod Ramsey, Sloane Veal, and Marshall Veal, all of Lubbock; her second family, the Newtons; seven nieces and nephews; and her adopted son, Sean Jones.
Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 12, at St. Paul's Episcopal Church. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made in her name to the Texas Tech Foundation, PO Box 45025, Lubbock, TX 79409.
Essie Payne
Essie Payne, 79, of Lubbock was born April 7, 1929, in Roaring Springs, to the late William Carl and Eula Viola (Carper) Roller. She married
Rubin D. Payne on Oct. 6, 1945, in Roaring Springs. She loved all her family and her precious dog, Scrappy. She retired from TI and Devro. She is preceded in death by her husband; a grandson, James; and seven brothers and sisters.
Essie passed away Tuesday, July 8, 2008.
She is survived by three daughters, Linda (Floyd) Waters of Plainview, Teresa (Sid) Gibson and Celia Mohling of Lubbock; her twin brother, Jessie (Bud) Roller and brother, A.L. (Bo) Roller both of Lubbock; four sisters, Winnie Byers of Seminole, Ruby Nichols of Lubbock, Margie Payne of Roaring Springs, and Janie Henley of Marana, Ariz.; three grandchildren, Keith (Jennifer), Jimmy and Valorie (Bobby); and eight great-grandchildren, Cassidy, Benna Mae, Tristan, Kaleb, Matthew, Troy, LeAnn, and Amber.
The family will greet friends tonight from 6- 8 p.m. at Wilsons' Funeral Directors in Wolfforth. Graveside services will be 2 p.m. Friday, July 11, 2008, at Roaring Springs cemetery.
Kenneth Larry Strouth
Kenneth Larry Strouth, 72, of Lubbock, died Wednesday, July 9, 2008. Ken was born on Jan. 27, 1937, in Dayton, Ohio, to William Walter and Dora (Hurt) Strouth. Upon graduation from Rosevelt High School he joined the United States Air Force. Ken served our country during Vietnam and the Korean Conflict. Master Sergeant Strouth retired from Reese Air Force Base after 24 years of service. Having an interest in photography, for the next 28 years, Ken owned and operated Accent Photography. He married
Joyce B. Nall on July 7, 1979, in Lubbock. Ken loved to entertain people of all ages and spent many hours as "Snapshot" the clown. He appeared with Joyce on her daytime children's TV show, the Sunshine Sally Show. Snapshot was also the guest of honor at many children's birthday parties and church Vacation Bible Schools. Ken and Joyce loved to travel and spent many hours touring across the United States and into Canada on their motorcycle. Also enjoying spending time in Ruidoso, N.M., Ken fished, golfed and played pool with a group of men that he named the "Sharp Shooters". Ken was a 32nd degree mason and also a member of the South Plains Photographers Association, where he also served as past president, Southcrest Baptist Church, South Plains Drifters, Hub City Wheels, Red Raider Road Riders and Lubbock Business Association.
Those family members left to cherish Ken's memories are his wife, Joyce; three children, Pamela Hankins and husband Chris of Escondido, Calif., Larry Kenneth Strouth of Durango, Colo., and Julie Aylor and husband L.T. of Arlington; a sister, Alyce Blumenstock of Dayton, Ohio; and a brother, Bob Strouth of Kitchner, Canada; 10 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Ken was preceded in death by two brothers.
Family and friends will gather to reminisce and honor Ken from 6-8 p.m. this evening at Lake Ridge Chapel and Memorial Designers, 82nd and Iola. Celebration service will be at 11 a.m., Friday, July 11, 2008 also at Lake Ridge Chapel with the Rev. David Wilson officiating. Masonic graveside with military honors will follow in Resthaven Memorial Park.

Pablo G. Leal
Pablo G. Leal, 88, of Lubbock, passed away July 18, 2008. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Monday, July 21, 2008 in the Abbey Chapel at Resthaven Funeral Home. Interment will follow in Resthaven Memorial Park. Visitation will take place on Sunday from 3 to 5 p.m. at the funeral home.
Pablo was born May 23, 1920, in Donna, Tx., to parents Teresa (Gomez) and Tanislado Leal. He was a beloved husband, father, and grandfather.
Survivors include two daughters and a son, Mary Blake, Linda Williams, and Paul Leal, II, all of Lubbock; five grandchildren, AlexAndrea DeLeon of Dallas; Benjamin DeLeon of Waco; and Paul Leal, III, Jessica Leal, and Ryan Swart, all of Lubbock. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Guadalupe Leal; son, Salomon Leal; and several brothers and sisters.

Minnie Marie McCray
Minnie Marie McCray, 92, of Crosbyton, passed away Tuesday, May 27, 2008. She was born Dec. 25, 1915, in Lubbock County, to Walter Loyd Altman and Addie Eugene Gassaway. She married
Ardis Glen McCray on Jan. 12, 1936 in Clovis New Mexico. Ardis preceded her in death on Dec. 21, 2000. Her son, Jerry Glen McCray, also preceded her in death on Dec. 7, 2003.
Minnie and Ardis retired from farming in Kansas and moved to Lubbock in 1980. They spent time traveling with their family and friends. They moved back to the land that was settled by her father in 1909, built a house and enjoyed watching the cotton growing beyond their back yard.
Minnie moved to an assisted living facility in Crosbyton in 2004 and made many friends and enjoyed her life. She will be greatly missed by her family and those who loved her. She touched many lives with her words of wisdom and love.
She is survived by her children, Glenda King and husband Henry of Ransom Canyon, Laura Hand and husband Bill of Spearman, Gary McCray and wife Jo of Muleshoe, Alice Reed and husband Ronnie of Lubbock, daughter-in-law Janelle McCray of Crosbyton, 14 Grandchildren; 41 great grandchildren and three great great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Friday, May 30, 2008, at Resthaven's Abbey Chapel with Stacy Connor and Hugh Huber officiating. Visitation will be tonight from 6-8 p.m. Interment will be at Resthaven Memorial Park.
