Kelsey Renee Vines
Kelsey Renee Vines, 18, unexpectedly joined the Lord she so cherished on September 2. She was born April 7, 1990 in Lubbock.
If there was any one kid that represented the spirit and honor of her high school, Lubbock-Cooper, it was Kelsey. As a starting guard on the girl's basketball team, she helped lead her school within one game of the 2008 State Tournament. When she wasn't running the court, she was running the track, specializing in the 800 Individual. She was extremely competitive, but always served as a prime example of great sportswomanship.
Kelsey was famous for putting a smile on people's faces, whether they are close friends, relatives or people she had just met.
She often quoted Biblical scripture, but never in a sanctimonious way. She did it to show how the words were a part of her life. She did it to reinforce the way she treated all people with love and grace. And she did it because she loved life and the lives surrounding her.
On the day her life on this earth ended, she maneuvered the car she was piloting in a manner that she alone would sustain the brunt of the on-coming truck. Her twin sister was injured but spared, a final and loving gift to her family.
Her family and friends will celebrate her enormous life on Friday, September 5 from 6 to 8 p.m. during a visitation at Lake Ridge Chapel and Memorial Designers, 6025 82nd Street in Lubbock. Funeral services, officiated by Rev. Steve McMeans, will be 11 a.m. September 6 at the Indiana Avenue Baptist Church, with a graveside burial immediately following. Friends of Kelsey ask that you please arrive early, as a large crowd is expected. Kelsey will be laid to rest at the Peaceful Gardens cemetery in a plot a stone's throw from her beloved Lubbock-Cooper High School.
Kelsey is survived by her loving parents, Thom and Becky Vines; by her big brother, Jeremy; and her twin sister, Kayla, who was injured in the automobile accident that united young Kelsey with the Christ she worshipped. She is also survived by her grandmother, Peggy Jean Vines; and grandfather, Eustace Steidtmann; as well as a host of cousins, uncles, and aunts from across the country.
The friends of the Vines, led by the Senior Class Parents of Lubbock-Cooper High School, are establishing an annual college scholarship, The Kelsey Vines Scholarship, in her honor and memory. In lieu of flowers, if you would like to contribute, please send your donation to The Kelsey Vines Scholarship Fund at Lubbock-Cooper High School, 16302 Loop 493, Lubbock, Tx 79423, or to the Kelsey Vines Memorial Fund at any Citi Bank location.
