Josephine Dellepiane Jardine
Josephine (Pina) Dellepiane Jardine died at her home in Lubbock on June 29, 2008. She was an exemplary wife and mother, an indefatigable walker and traveler, and a generous teacher and mentor who never lost her curiosity for the world around her. Good talk, good food, good wine, good company also kept her young. She listened to opera with the same enthusiasm with which she followed track and field. Nothing escaped her memory.
Pina was born on Sept. 15, 1929, in Genoa, Italy, and grew up there during World War II. She arrived in the U.S. in 1953, and lived in California, Arizona, Montana, and elsewhere in Texas before settling with her family in Lubbock in 1963. As a teacher of Latin and German in the LISD for more than three decades, she changed the course of many a student's life, inspiring with her passion for languages and classical studies.
Study tours in Europe and visits to her family there filled her recent summers, but made her two cats eager for her return. In the summer of 2007, she delighted in touring Croatia, hiking in the Alps, swimming in the Mediterranean, visiting museums in New York City, and encountering friends on her walks in Lubbock.
Pina is survived by her husband, Louis; children, Helen, Francis, and Anna; son-in-law, Claudio Papalia; grandson, Marcus Papalia; brother, Riccardo Dellepiane and his family; and cats, Kitty and Blackie. She did not want a funeral or a memorial; her hometown of Genoa will be her final resting place.
Pina found great joy in the friendships she forged over the years. Those who knew her might remember her by reading a book, taking a walk, planting a tree, or donating to the charity of their choice. A private celebration of her life will be held shortly.
