Maria Ortega Ramirez

Funeral services for Maria Ortega Ramirez, 83, of Canton, previously of

Seminole, will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 23 in the First United Methodist Church in Seminole with the Rev. Jerry Ramirez officiating. Interment will follow in the Gaines Co. cemetery with services under the direction of Ratliff Funeral Home of Seminole.

Mrs. Ramirez was born October 5, 1924 in Alpine to Crespin Ortega and Leonarda Navarette. She married Flavio Ramirez in Alpine. She had been employed at Seminole ISD in the cafeteria for 10 years and was a Methodist. She was preceded in death by her husband, Flavio on Oct. 6, 1999; one brother, Rueben Ortega; and four grandchildren.

She is survived by five sons, Vic Molinar of Seminole; Antonio Ramos of Odessa; Sam Zuniga of Norman, Okla.; George Ramirez and Jerry Ramirez, both of Lubbock; seven daughters, Nordela Almager of Seagraves; Sylvia Castillo of Lubbock; Diana Alvarado of Canton; Wanda Taylor of Ruidoso, N.M.; Irene Halbert of Midlothian; Bertha Harmon of Seminole; and Rose Mitchell of Midland; one brother, Joe Ortega of Seminole; two sisters, Reyes Borjas and Margaret Avila, both of Seminole; 24 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and three great-great grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of East Texas, 4111 University Blvd., Tyler, Tx 75701.

Reyes V. Gonzales

Mrs. Reyes V. Gonzales, 91, of Levelland passed away August 21, 2008 in Levelland. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Monday, August 25, 2008 at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Levelland. Rosary will be 7 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at Head Duarte Funeral Home in Levelland. Viewing will be Saturday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Sunday from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the funeral home. Interment will follow in the City of Levelland cemetery under the direction of Head Duarte Funeral Home of Levelland.

Trent Scott

Trent Scott, 42, of Lubbock, passed away Aug. 18, 2008, at his residence. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 21, 2008, at City View Christian Fellowship, 4501 Milwaukee, with Kevin Keltz officiating. Burial will follow in Resthaven Memorial Park. Visitation will be held on Wed. from 6-8 p.m. at Resthaven Funeral Home.

Trent was born June 10, 1966, in Amarillo, to Sharon (Read) and Ceaman Scott. He graduated from Amarillo H.S. in 1984 and later from Amarillo College in 1987 with an Associate Degree in Business and Marketing. In 1987, he was married to Janan Sherrod. Trent was an Eagle Scout, an Esteemed Loyal Knight of the B.P.O.E. Elks Lodge 1348, and had worked as a District Sales Manager for Glazers Wholesale for 21 years.

Survivors include his wife, Janan Scott; son, Tyler Scott; and daughter, Shelby Scott, all of Lubbock; David and Sharon VanSchepen of Amarillo, and Ceaman and Margaret Scott of Lubbock; four brothers: Micheal and Tobey Scott of Lubbock, and Craig and Doug VanSchepen of Amarillo; grandmother, Faye Read of Canyon; and a very good friend of the family, Jeff Railsback.

Barbara Ann Gregory Cheyne

Graveside services for Barbara Ann Gregory Cheyne, 68, of Jayton will be 3 p.m. Friday, August 22, 2008 at the Jayton cemetery with Terry Ellison officiating. Arrangements are under direction of Adams Funeral Home of Crosbyton. Barbara passed away Wednesday, August 20, 2008 at Covenant Medical Center.

She was born November 17, 1939 in Spur to the late Clyde Elvin and Ada Mae (Ussery) Gregory. On January 19, 1963 she married Charles Ray Cheyne in Amarillo. He preceded her in death in 1997.

Barbara was a member of the Church of Christ and a nurse. She moved to Crosbyton in 1969 and was the Crosbyton School Nurse for 20 years. After her retirement from the school she continued to work as a nurse.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Phyllis Renee Cheyne in 1965.

Survivors include a son and his wife, Gregory "Sug" and Shana Cheyne of Spur; and three grandchildren, Sarah, Katie, and Gina Cheyne, all of Spur.

The family suggests memorials to the Kent County Ambulance Service, or the Kent County Nursing Home.

Delia M. Sanchez

Delia M. Sanchez, 53, of Lubbock, went to be with her Lord on Aug. 18, 2008. A celebration of life service will be 1 p.m. Friday, August 22 at Resthaven's Abbey Chapel with Pastor Jose Rico and Deacon Fernando Torres officiating. Interment will follow in Peaceful Gardens Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. today at Resthaven Funeral Home.

Delia was born Aug. 8, 1955, in Lubbock to Caroline Rodriguez and grew up in Lubbock. She was a loving mother and grandmother.

Surviving relatives are her children, Sandra Perez of Lubbock, Edward Salazar and wife Yolanda of Saginaw, Mich.; Leticia Salazar and husband Vern of Lubbock, and Johnny Salazar and wife Sarah of Lubbock; sister, Rachel Torres; brothers, Robert Martinez and Enrique Ordonez; 15 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Jerry Montes, Jr.

Funeral services for Jerry Montes, Jr., 32, of Lubbock will be 10 a.m. Tuesday, August 19, 2008 at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church with Father Jim O'Connor officiating.

Rosary will be 7 p.m. Sunday, August 17 and Monday, August 18, 2008 at Guajardo Funeral Chapels. Burial will be at Peaceful Gardens cemetery under the direction of Guajardo Funeral Chapels. He died on Thursday, August 14, 2008 at University Medical Center. He was born on January 29, 1976 in Lubbock. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Juan Montes, Sr.

Jerry graduated from Lubbock High School in 1994, and began working at the young age of 16 as a painter and eventually starting his own business, J and M Painting. Jerry was a hard worker, and a loving father and son. He enjoyed watching his sons play baseball, taking family vacations, and cooking out on the grill.

Survivors include his parents, Jerry Sr. and Josie Montes; sons, Michael and Joshua Montes, and the mother of his children, Marci Perez; sisters, Roxanne Montes and Lisa Markley; maternal grandparents, Joe and Pauline Valdez; paternal grandmother, Felipa G. Montes; numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends, all of Lubbock.

Pallbearers will be Joseph Rodriguez, Michael Rodriguez, Don Markley, Carlos Montes, Nick Torres, and Jacob Bustamante.

Trent Scott

Annie Mae Allen Strickland

Very loving, caring, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, neighbor, friend, fellow church member went to be with the Lord at 10:15 p.m. May 25, 2004.

She was born Jan. 26, 1919, in Comanche County. Graduated from Gustine High School. Married William Johnny Payne Jan. 22, 1939. Moved to Lubbock May 1946. He passed away Dec. 27, 1962. She married C.O. Gregory July 18, 1970. He passed away Aug. 10, 1994. May 24, 1997 was the wedding date to Dr. James Hassler Strickland. Working for Drs. Cauley and Welch, Drs. Shannon, Ratcliff, and Loveless, surgeons, Jones, Trout, Flygare and Moody, attorneys and Lena Stephens was a great chance to get acquainted and enjoy so many friends. Ann loved her church and the Sojourners Sunday School Class at First Baptist Church. Loved giving hugs and cooking chicken and dumplings and so many other favorite dishes to serve so many friends.

She is survived by her wonderful, attentive husband, Dr. Jim; daughters, Lanell e Lee and husband Chick of Lakewood, Colo., and Beth Arthur and husband D'Nard of Lubbock; sister, Peggy Yeager and husband Judge Ronald M. Yeager of Aransas Pass; brothers, C.W. (Chuck) Allen and wife Judy of Bedford, Dr. Zoel Allen and wife Connie of Perryton; grandchildren, D'Nard Arthur II and wife Jennifer of Sarasota, Fla., Deidre D'Nise Arthur Parish and husband Bud; great-granddaughters, Catherine and Isabella of Houston; granddaughters, Candace D'Ann Arthur Dunn and husband Lt. Adam and great-granddaughter, Cameron Elizabeth of Jacksonville, Fla., RaChelle Bole and husband Chris, great-grandchildren, CheNelle, Camden, Reagan and Alex of Colorado Springs, Colo.; grandson, Johnny Lee and wife Susie and great-grandsons, Tyler, Brian and Jared; stepsons, Dr. Jim Strickland, Jr. and wife Marlene of Albuquerque, N.M., George Strickland and wife Mary Kay of Beaumont, Bob Strickland and wife Gayle of Dacula, Ga.; stepdaughter, Cheryl Goforth and husband Al of Lubbock; a host of step- grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, May 28, at the First Baptist Church of Lubbock with Rev. Jerry Huggins, Rev. Bobby Dagnel, and Rev. John Ballard officiating. Interment will follow at Resthaven Memorial Park under the direction of Sanders Funeral Home. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday from 6 to 7:30 p.m. The family suggests memorials to the Commit to Conquer Fund, c/o First Baptist Church, 2201 Broadway Ave., Lubbock, TX 79401.

Garry Don Moore

Garry Don Moore, 49, of Lubbock died Monday, Oct. 4, 2004. Garry was born June 8, 1955 to Melvin and Bonnie Moore in Lubbock. He was a pumper for Gulf Oil Company and a carpenter. Garry was a loving father and happiest when he was fishing or hunting with his son and daughters.

He was a hard-worker and a man of his word. Small children, young adults, and pets instinctively trusted and liked Garry. He was loved and will be missed. Garry is survived by his son, Kristopher Moore; his daughters, Kami Pruett and husband Chad and Kassie Moore; former wife, Lynn Moss, all of Lubbock; his mother, Bonnie Moore; and a sister, Janet Foshee of Seagraves; a brother, Dennis Moore of Lubbock; and brother-in-law, Richard Roe of Brownfield.

He is also survived by nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, and a host of friends and "adopted" family members. His father, Melvin, and beloved sister, Delynda Roe, predeceased him. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Thu rsday, Oct. 7, 2004, at Resthaven Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be at 12 p.m. Friday, Oct. 8, 2004, at St. Luke's United Methodist Church, 44th and Memphis Ave. Burial will follow at Resthaven Memorial Park under the direction of Resthaven Funeral Home of Lubbock.

J. B. Rhea

Graveside services for J. B. Rhea of Roswell will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, September 16, at Resthaven cemetery in Lubbock. He peacefully transitioned to Heaven on Sept.13, 2008, two days shy of his 95th birthday. Rick Rapp of Gateway Church of Roswell will officiate. Honorary pallbearers will be Lubbock associates Jack McQueen, Bobby McQueen, Jeff Wheeler, Gordon Downum, and Bob Tate; and the members of the Rotary Club of Roswell.

J. B. was born in Hewitt on Sept. 15, 1913, to J. H. and Lottie Rhea. His parents; his older sister, Regina Rhea Franks; and his wife, Kathryn Hudman Rhea, preceded him in death.

He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Hud and Roxanne Rhea of Roswell; daughter and son-in-law, Ryn and Russell Bowers of Houston; and his sister-in-law, Evelyn Hudman Smith of Lubbock. Other survivors include grandchildren, David Rhea and wife Kelly, Robin and husband Larry Parker, Barton Bowers and Brian Bowers. He is also survived by his great-grandchildren, Melody and Michael Pasqualini, Landon and Aimee Rhea, and Hannah Parker and Kase Parker.

J. B. began his long career in the motion picture theater business while attending Lubbock High School, and later as a Texas Tech student. As an employee of the Griffith Amusement Company, he worked his way up the ladder with jobs including usher, doorman, projectionist, assistant house manager, house manager, assistant manager, and manager of multiples theaters in numerous towns around the circuit in West Texas and Oklahoma.

In July, 1937, J. B. married Kathryn Hudman. Following the birth of their son, Hud, in 1938, and their daughter, Ryn, in 1942, J. B. volunteered to serve in the United States Army during World War II. He saw hazardous duty in the South Pacific and the Philippines as a forward observer for the artillery.

Following the war, he resumed his theater career in Norman, Okla., and later in Lubbock. Throughout his involvement with the motion picture industry, he was known for his innovative, creative, and attention-getting publicity campaigns. His favorite was a three-day horseback ride, during a January blizzard, from Amarillo to Elk City, Okla., to deliver the reels of film for the upcoming attraction and, more importantly, to prove that it could be done and that he was the man who could do it.

Following his retirement from the theater business in 1968, J. B. began a second career as the Executive Director of the Lubbock Board of Realtors, which flourished under his leadership. When he retired again in 1981, he and Kathryn moved to Roswell to be nearer their family. J. B. soon had a third "career," caring for Kathryn as she struggled against Parkinson's disease. Ever the epitome of a gentleman, he truly "laid down his life" for his wife, the love of his life.

J. B. was very active in civic affairs wherever he lived. He especially enjoyed chairing the Lubbock Chamber of Commerce's Military Affairs Committee. He was an expert marksman and avid hunter. He was an accomplished horseman, and a charter member of the American Quarter Horse Association. He was a Rotarian for 69 years, and was named a Paul Harris Fellow in 2002.
