Julia Margaret Steele
Julia Margaret Harmon was born April 24, 1912, in Brookston to James Rush Harmon and Alberta Dunn McClure Harmon. On Jan. 2, 1921, Julia, her mother, and siblings took a train from East Texas and "landed" near Idalou, where her father had purchased farmland. Grandfather Harmon died in 1926, leaving his widow with six children. Julia helped her mother raise her siblings, farm the land, and make it through the Great Depression. With her help, three of the children graduated from Texas Technological College - which was Grandfather Harmon's dream. One son, Ralph Harmon, quit school in the eighth grade to farm the family land. He became one of Lubbock County's best cotton farmers. His twin, Philip Harmon, played for the first Texas Tech team to go to the Cotton Bowl, coached by the legendary Pete Cawthorn. Her baby sister, Katherine, was a Home Economics teacher in Cotton Center, Roosevelt, and Lubbock for 41 years. The oldest son, Jim "Tex" Harmon, left the dusty Plains for California before his father died, and was a trainman for the Southern Pacific Railroad. William Newton, the second son, died from a brain tumor in 1922.
"Sis" graduated from Idalou High School in 1929 and from Texas Tech in 1933. She graduated as an R. N. from the Lubbock Sanitarium in 1935 and traveled (alone) to Chicago to become a nurse anesthetist in 1936. Julia worked for Dr. Frank B. Malone, one of the founders of Plains Clinic (where Caf¿¿ J is today). On Sept. 14, 1947, she married
John Boyd Steele, Jr. whom she met as a "quilt baby." Julia and John's families were friends, and the babies spent many hours together on quilts while their mothers visited. Raised a Methodist, she joined Broadway Church of Christ after their marriage. Their son, John Boyd Steele, III, was born May 18, 1949. Johnny Boy had Downs Syndrome and doctors advised the Steeles to put him in a home, forget they ever had him, and have other babies. They ignored the doctors' advice, and took Johnny home with them. As Johnny Boy grew, Julia realized the pitiful opportunities offered "retarded" people in the early 50s. John B. told her he would make the money and for her to do whatever was needed to make it better for children like Johnny Boy. Julia did, and she was named the Altrusa Club's Woman of the Year for her efforts. It was her greatest honor, although she did not do it for the recognition. Julia was a charter member of the Lubbock Christian College Associates, and helped author two Treasured Recipes cookbooks. She was named Christian Woman of the Year by Lubbock Christian University in 1994. The day she received this honor, Julia told the audience, "If somebody's nose needs wiping, wipe it." That was her philosophy and she lived it. Julia taught the Special Class at Broadway Church of Christ for 48 years, continuing to teach after her beloved Johnny Boy passed away Dec. 23, 1995.
On Oct. 12, 2008, at the age of 96, Aunt Sis left her earthly home for a heavenly Harmon reunion. She was preceded in death by her husband, John B. in 1989; Johnny Boy; and her siblings. Those who will join them later are Mack and Rodney Harmon of Idalou, Jim Bob Harmon of Anaheim, Calif., Bill Harmon of Glen Rose, Jerry Harmon of Dunsmuir, Calif., Kay Handley of Greenfield, Calif.; Steve Harmon of Plano, Katiebeth Cole and Kyle Bullock of Lubbock, and many great and great great-nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank Garrison Care Center for the wonderful care and concern shown Julia the last two years of her life. Also, thanks to Hospice of Lubbock for their help and support.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct.15, 2008, at Broadway Church of Christ. Officiating will be Rodney Plunkett .Visitation will be Tuesday from 6:30-8 p.m. at Resthaven Funeral Home.
It has been said, "Well behaved women seldom make history." Julia was well behaved, but determined. She made history and improved the future of retarded citizens in Lubbock, while leaving a lifelong legacy for her family of "so-called normals."
Well done, good and faithful servant. We will miss you, Aunt Sis.
