Ellen Candice Candi Cooper

Celebration of Life services for Ellen Candice "Candi" Cooper will be held Monday April 7, 2008, at 10 a.m. in the First United Methodist Church, with Dr. Jay Horton officiating. Burial will follow at Resthaven memorial Park. For family and friends, a visitation will be held Sunday, April 6, from 2 to 4 p.m. at Rix Funeral Directors.

She graciously and peacefully took the Lord's hand late Tuesday night, April 1, 2008 after a long illness

Candi was born in Lubbock on Oct. 7, 1950 to Melvin C. "Chick" and Evelyn Keller Cooper. Candi was a graduate of Lubbock Monterrey High and Angelo State University, where she served as President of Lambda Tau Sorority and was elected to Who's Who in American Colleges and Universities. Candi moved from San Angelo to Houston in 1982 with Ensearch, Inc. and so became interested in the travel industry due to her many global travel experiences. She opened the Travel Shoppe in 1985 and became a member of International Federation of Women in Travel in 1989, of which she served as Governor of the Mid-America Region from 1993-1995 and also developed close friendships with many other warm and gifted travel professionals from all over the world. After her retirement, she returned to Lubbock and took care of her mother.

To her friends Candi was "the Caregiver". She was always there whenever anyone was in need, and not only with emotional comfort and nursing but with gourmet food, first class service and organization, unparalleled taxi service. Candi easily collected friends because she was the quintessential friend. She would become the family member that each friend needed at the moment she was needed, for as long as she was needed, and always the true West Texas lady, with just the right amount of class for each situation.

She is preceded in death by her Mother and Father and is survived by her brother, John R. Cooper; her nephew Russell Cooper; niece Michelle Evitt; grand niece, Hannah Evitt, Aunt Velma Fraser, and cousin James Fraser all of Lubbock and cousin Murry Cooper of Boerne, Texas. She is also survived by her god daughter Tara Otto and many, many very close personal friends, including Betsy and Robert McEver of San Antonio, Lester and March Childres of Houston, Helen, Michael and Ciara Otto, Kelly and Aubrey Wagonner, Sharon Daniels, all of Lubbock, Debbie Schmit of Indiana, Joe and Joan Baird of Ballinger, and Mary and Richard McSwain of Colorado, and all her beloved bridge buddies.

Our special appreciation goes out for the fabulous service provided by Home Instead, Vista Care, and Aerocare Aviation, of Lubbock.

Donations can be made to the Candi Cooper Nursing Scholarship Fund at the Covenant Foundation, 3623 22nd Place, Lubbock, TX, 79410. This fund was created because of the outstanding care given Candi by her compassionate caregivers, especially Shantavia Bibbs.
