William Garland Ripley, better known as Bill, was born on June 30, 1930 in Tulsa, Okla. to C.A. and Faye Baxter Ripley. In his pre-school years, he was raised by his Baxter grandparents, but upon reaching school age, he lived with his adoring Aunt Pug and Uncle Mac McKeown.
As a youth, he spent summers in the Rio Grande Valley at his father's produce plants and cotton gins. After a year in college, he had enough of school and he joined the Navy where he was a demolition expert aboard a submarine. Upon leaving the Navy, he decided to follow his dream of the cotton industry, and attended the Murdock Cotton School in Memphis, Tenn. and took their pima and upland cotton courses. From there, he went to Nicaragua and set up the classing department for the Simosian government. He also worked for the USDA one season and classed cotton in California, Texas, Arkansas, and Alabama. From there, he went to Macon, Ga. and was with Atlantic Cotton Mills for three years, making a lasting friendship with the McCommon family that continues to this day. As his father needed assistance in his Valley business, he went back to help and re-connected with Ruth Elkins, a girl he had dated in the summers spent there. They married
, and after living in South Texas and Memphis, Tenn., they settled in Lubbock where they have resided for the last 34 years.
He owned and operated Cotton Salvage and Sales, where he cleaned motes, blended motes and loose or straight cotton, and was certified by Lloyd's of London to handle fire and water damaged cotton. He was known world wide as the Red Adair of cotton fires. After that he owned WGR and Suncot Cotton, traveling the world, buying and selling all grades of cotton. During that time, he also built the first cotton gin in Vietnam before retiring.
