Guardian editor Hetherington dies
LONDON {AP} Alastair Hetherington, editor of The Guardian for nearly 20 years and later head of the British Broadcasting Corp. in Scotland, died Sunday. He was 79.
Hetherington died in a hospital in Stirling, Scotland. The cause of death was not announced, but he had suffered a long illness.
As editor of The Guardian from 1956 to 1975, Hetherington oversaw the move of the venerable Manchester Guardian to the renamed newspaper's present base in London.
"He took over the Manchester Guardian just as the Suez War broke out and bravely stated the paper's opposition to that war," the newspaper's current editor, Alan Rusbridger, said Sunday. "He oversaw the transition of the paper from Manchester to London and saw it through a financial crisis in the mid-'60s when it was nearly merged with The Times.
"By the time he retired in 1975 it was a secure national newspaper respected around the world," Rusbridger said.
Hetherington joined the Manchester Guardian in 1950 after four years at The Glasgow Herald, and served as assistant editor and foreign editor. In 1971, he was named Journalist of the Year in the National Press awards.
He became head of BBC Scotland in 1975 and held the post three years.
"He was a brilliant and courageous editor and above all he inspired the journalistic community across BBC Scotland to set themselves the highest standards," said John McCormick, the current chief of BBC Scotland.
Hetherington wrote a half dozen books including, "A Walker's Guide to Arran," the Scottish island where he had a home. He also was emeritus research professor in media studies at Stirling University.
The Hetherington Lecture, an annual lecture established in his honor at the university, was inaugurated Wednesday night with former Guardian editor Peter Preston as its first speaker.
Hetherington is survived by his wife, four children and three stepchildren. Funeral plans were not immediately announced.
