Orville Rankin
LEVELLAND - Services for Orville "Sam" Cook Rankin, 90, of Levelland will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the First United Methodist Church of Levelland with the Rev. Jesse Hodge, pastor, and the Rev. Harold Harrison, pastor of the First Baptist Church in Whiteface, officiating.
Burial will be in the City of Levelland cemetery under the direction of Geo. C. Price Funeral Directors.
Rankin died Saturday, Feb. 27, 1999, in Lynwood Manor following an illness.
He was born Aug. 3, 1908, in Davenport, Okla. He graduated from Dewey High School and Central State University in Edmond, Okla.
He married
Alice Le Force on Dec. 29, 1937. They moved to Whiteface in 1947 and to Levelland in 1988.
He was a chemist, working 12 years for Phillips Petroleum and retiring after 25 years at Amoco. He was a Mason for 60 years and was a member of Levelland Lodge No. 1236, AF and AM. He was a Scottish Rite Mason 32 in Guthrie, Okla.
Rankin was a member of the Whiteface Volunteer Fire Department and had served as town mayor. He was also a scout master and a leader at the 1960 National Boy Scout Jamboree. He was a member of First United Church in Levelland.
Survivors include his wife; a son, Jim of Levelland; a daughter, Mary Kay Elliot of Levelland; eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Vada Benedict
Services for Vada Benedict, 81, of Lubbock will be at 3 p.m. Monday at Sanders Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Wayne R. Williams, pastor emeritus of Parkway Drive Baptist Church, officiating.
Burial will be in Resthaven Memorial Park under the direction of Sanders Funeral Home.
She died Friday, Dec. 24, 1999 at Lakeside Nursing Home.
She was born Dec. 8, 1918 in Jacksonville. She attended schools in Jacksonville. She married
Vernon Dawson Benedict on Nov. 7, 1937, in Athens. He died on Dec. 28, 1964. They moved from Jacksonville to Lubbock in 1954. She retired from Methodist Hospital after 18 years of service.
Survivors include three sons, Willard Lee, Marvin Morris and Thomas D., all of Lubbock; a sister, Lenzie Pounders of Rusk, a brother, William M. Crawfod of New Caney; eight grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. today at the funeral home.
The family suggests memorials to a favorite charity.
Jeffrey Lea
MIDLAND - Memorial services for Jeffrey Randolph Lea, 22, of Midland will be at 4 p.m. today at First Baptist Church.
Private graveside services will be at a later date.
Arrangements are under the direction of Ellis Funeral Home.
He died Tuesday, Nov. 30, 1999, in Shackelford.
He was born Sept. 3, 1977, in Houston. He graduated from Midland High School in 1996. He was a National Merit finalist, a three-year academic letterman, a member of National Honor Society and was on the Student Council.
He was a member of First Baptist Church. He was a senior at the University of Texas.
Survivors include his parents, Ralph and Karen Lea of Midland; a sister, Katie of Midland; and his grandparents, Anne Lea of Midland and Allene and Keith Knight of Lubbock.
The family suggests memorials to a favorite charity in need of assistance during the Christmas holidays.
Peggy Youngblood
Graveside services for Peggy Youngblood, 66, of Lubbock will be 10 a.m. Monday at the City of Lubbock cemetery with the Rev. Steve Campbell, pastor of Agape United Methodist Church, officiating.
Burial is under the direction of Sanders Funeral Home.
She died on Friday, Dec. 24, 1999, at Covenant Medical Center.
She was born June 5, 1933, in Slaton. She moved to Lubbock in the 1940s. She graduated from Levelland High School and the University of North Texas. She married
Holton Youngblood on August 2, 1953, in Levelland. He died on Nov. 7, 1990. She taught school for the Lubbock Independent School District and the Frenship Independent School District before her retirement. She was a member of Agape United Methodist Church.
Survivors include a son, Craig Youngblood of Lubbock; a daughter, Tammie "Rene" Youngblood of Lubbock; and a granddaughter.
The family suggests memorials to the Muscular Dystrophy Research.
Alice Isabel Pittman
ROCHESTER, Texas - Services for Alice Isabel Pittman, 93, of Rochester will be at 11 a.m. today at United Methodist Church with the Rev. James Patterson and the Rev. Owen Aiken officiating.
Burial will follow in Rochester cemetery under the direction of Smith Funeral Home.
She did Sunday, Dec. 5, 1999, at Knox County Hospital.
She was born June 29, 1906, in Comanche. She married
Denver A. Pittman. He died Sept. 25, 1989. She moved to Haskell County in 1937. She was a housewife and a member of the Methodist church.
Survivors include three sons, Auvis of Anson, Eugene of Kemp, Okla., and Alvin of Earth; a daughter, Mildred Stubbs of Knox City; 10 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.
Gonzalo Ramirez Sr.
Rosary for Gonzalo Ramirez Sr., 75, of Lubbock will be said at 7 p.m. today at Calvillo Funeral Home Chapel. Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church with the Rev. Michael O'Dwyer officiating.
Burial will be in Peaceful Gardens cemetery under the direction of Calvillo Funeral Home.
He died Monday, Dec. 13, 1999, at Covenant Medical Center.
He was born Jan. 10, 1924, in Guayanilla, Puerto Rico. He married
Olivia Gonzalez on Jan. 9, 1955, in Lubbock. He owned and operated Corral Restaurant for many years. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council No. 897 and St. Joseph's Catholic Church. He was a retired custodian for Lubbock Independent School District.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Gonzalo Jr. of Dallas and Robert of Lubbock; two daughters, Angela Escalante of Corpus Christi and Elizabeth Ramirez of Lubbock; two brothers, Benigno and Bienvenido, both of Puerto Rico; five sisters, Mari Luisa, Dolores, Rosa and Ebelina, all of Puerto Rico and Providencia of California; and eight grandchildren.
Leah Bartley
Services for Leah Bartley, 74, of Lubbock will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Belvue Baptist Church in Kermit with the Rev. Beg Bridges officiating.
Burial will be in Kermit cemetery under direction of Cooper Funeral Chapel Inc.
She died Wednesday, Dec. 22, 1999, at Covenant Medical Center.
She was born Jan. 1, 1925, in Patmos, Ark.
She married
Melvin Nathan Bartley on April 27, 1946, in Lubbock. He died June 4, 1987.
She was a resident of Kermit for 43 years, and she was a charter member of Belvue Baptist Church in Kermit. In Lubbock, she was a member of Elgin Avenue Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Leah Ann Bartley, in May 1999.
She is survived by a son Melvin Wayne Bartley of Hewitt; a daughter Jodie Carrell of Lubbock; a brother, Tommy Somers of Lubbock; three sisters, Vada Somers and Pat Bunker, both of Snyder, and Dorothy Hedley of Lubbock; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
