BARBARA ANN CHRISTIAN ANDERSON

Funeral services for Barbara Ann Christian, 37, of Palacios will be held Saturday, June 16, 2001 at Riverside Baptist Church in Rosedale, Mississippi (MS), followed by interment at Wright Crossing, MS. She died Friday, June 8, 2001 at Delta Regional Medical Center, Greenville, MS. Survivors include her fiancˇ, Lloyd Toby Anderson, Sr.; a daughter, Tyronica KeShondra Christian; a son, Lloyd Toby Anderson, Jr.; her mother, Mary R. Christian; five sisters, Mary A. Christian of Cleveland, MS., Shirley J. Broome and Sherrix M. Christian, both of Rosedale, MS, Stine Anderson of Pace, MS; and Angie L. Christian of Symond, MS.; three brothers, Arthur Christian of Rosedale, MS, Roger L. Christian of King, N.C.; and Melvin Christian of Parchman, MS; four nephews, two nieces, a host of aunts and uncles and a godson, Roy G. Burks, Jr. of Stafford, TX.

ROBERT E. BYERS

Funeral services for Robert E. "Bob" Byers, 92, of Palacios were held 1 p.m. Thursday, June 7, 2001 at the Church of God Prophecy in Port Lavaca, with the Rev. H. N. Hartsfield officiating, assisted by pastors Willie Espinoza, Raymond Salinas, Lloyd Rodriguez and Rafael Rios. Graveside services followed at the Palacios cemetery. He died Tuesday, June 5, 2001. He was born June 18, 1908 in Prairie Hill, Tex., to the late Samuel R. and Minerva Lowery Byers. A retired commercial shrimper at Port O'Connor and a former Calhoun County deputy sheriff, he spent his later years in Weesatche and Palacios. Survivors include his wife of 72 years, Velma Leadford Byers; one daughter, Robin Leadford Posgay and husband Ray of Friendswood; and one grandson, Jody Harvey and his wife Gabriela of Port O'Connor. He was preceded in death by 11 brothers and sisters. Pallbearers were Ray Posgay, Jody Harvey, Daryl Everett, Lloyd Rodriguez, Raymond Salinas and Eric Young.

MAJOR JEROME B. KIMBALL, JR.

Graveside services for Major Jerome Brooks Kimball, Jr., (ret.), 66, of Palacios will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday, June 2, 2001, in the Wharton City cemetery, with lay pastor Colleen Claybourn officiating. He died Tuesday, May 29, 2001. A native of Houston, he was born April 4, 1935 to the late Jerome Brooks, Sr. and Nell Armstrong Kimball. He moved to Palacios as a young child and was a graduate of Palacios High School. He served in the U.S. Army Infantry during the Berlin Crisis and the Vietnam Conflict, retiring as a Major in the U. S. Army in 1976 in Giessen, Germany. Following retirement he was employed as an ROTC instructor for the Houston ISD until the late 1980s. After moving back to Palacios in 1989, he became a driver's education instructor for the Palacios ISD and a defensive driving instructor in Matagorda County. He was a Baptist and a member of the Palacios VFW. Survivors include the wife, Bonnie Danielsen Kimball (to whom he was married on June 7, 1957 in Ojai, Calif.); and a son, Jerry Kimball, both of Palacios. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Stacy Lynn Odem; a sister, Nell Elizabeth Kimball; and a brother, Raines Crosby "Tiny" Kimball. Memorials may be made to the Palacios Area Historical Association, P. O. Box 11, Palacios, Tx 77465; or the Palacios Area Fund, 458 Commerce, Palacios, Tx 77465.

JUAN OLLERVIDEZ

Funeral services for Juan Ollervidez, 54, of Palacios, were held May 30, 2001 at Casa de Dios Church. Interment was in Palacios cemetery. Mr. Ollervidez was born May 9, 1947 in Mexico to Jesus and Nicholas Parado Ollervidez. He died May 27, 2001. He is survived by his wife, Bessie Solis Ollervidez of Palacios; four daughters, Regina Flores of Victoria, Nichole Salaierna, Leticia Figueroa and Kristi Figueroa all of Palacios; eight sisters, Dora Wojaowski of Wisconsin, Domitila Riveria of Mexico, Socorro Ollervidez, Lorene Gonzales, Susana Ibarra and Dora Garcia all of McAllen, Martha Perez and Blanca Lara both of Mexico; two brothers, Gerardo Ollervidez and Juan Manuel both of McAllen; and eight grandchildren.

LOLITA MYERS WALKER

Graveside services for Lolita Myers Walker, 89, of Palacios, were held May 28, 2000 at the Palacios cemetery. Mrs. Walker was born in Lolita, Texas to the late William and Una Farquhar Myers. She died Friday, May 25, 2001. She was secretary to the Superintendent of Boling High School in Boling, Tx. and to the General Manager of Texas Gulf Sulphur Co. in Newgulf, Tx. before moving to Palacios. A member of the Newgulf Baptist Church, she and her late husband, Covey Walker, built and ran Covey's Corner for many years and later added Covey's Gift Shop. Mrs. Walker is survived by her daughter, Nell Lanfear of Port Lavaca; grandson, Larry Lanfear; granddaughter, Lani Montgomery and 3 great grandchildren. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Disease Research, P.O. Box 2028, Victoria, Texas 77902 or donor's choice. Arrangements by Palacios Funeral Home, 361-972-2012.

HURE LEE RIVERS

Funeral services for Hure Lee Rivers, 82, of Palacios were held June 2, 2001 at the Free Zion Missionary Baptist Church in Blessing with the Rev. Ben Hadden officiating. Interment was at Palacios cemetery. He died May 27, 2001. He was born in Matagorda County on Feb. 8, 1919 to the late Emmitt and Lola Franklin Rivers. Survivors include three daughters, Lonnie Jeanette, Teresa Elaine and Lillian Marie; one son, Samuel Louis; two sisters, Helen and Vivian; three brothers, Elijah, Charlie and David; 18 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by four sisters, Sylvia, Ann, Celestine and Elverine.

ANITA ALVAREZ GARCIA

Funeral rites for Anita Alvarez Garcia, 82, of Palacios, were held June 2, 2001 at St. Anthony's Catholic Church, with the Rev. Charles Dwomoh officiating. Interment was at in the Palacios cemetery. She died May 29, 2001. A native of Olivia, she was born March 5, 1919 to the late Marcelino and Ventura Morales-Alvarez. She was a homemaker and a Catholic. Survivors include two daughters, Mary Ann Garcia and Rebecca Torres, both of Palacios; eight sons, Alfred Garcia, Albert Garcia, Tony Garcia, Nick Garcia III, Robert David Garcia, Lawrence Garcia, all of Palacios, Lee Garcia of Freeport and John Garcia of Sacramento, Calif.; 39 grandchildren; and 64 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Nick Garcia, Jr.; a daughter, Vivian Carrillo; and a son, Robert Garcia.

LOLITA MYERS WALKER

Graveside services Lolita Myers Walker, 89, of Palacios were held May 28, 2001 at Palacios cemetery. She died Friday, May 25, 2001. She was born March 11, 1912 in Lolita, Tex., to the late William and Una Farquhar Myers. She was co-owner and operator of Covey's Corner and Covey's Gift Shop and had previously been secretary for Boling High School. She was a member of Newgulf Baptist Church. Survivors include one daughter, Nell Lanfear of Port Lavaca; two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Covey Walker; and two sisters, Lucille Compton and Lonnie Dell Selby. Memorials may be made to: Alzheimer Disease Research, P. O. Box 2028, Victoria, Tex. 77979, or to donor's choice.

DR. JAMES MICHAEL FLEETWOOD

Dr. James Michael Fleetwood, 51, of Palacios, died May 9, 2001. Dr. Fleetwood was born Oct. 11, 1949 in Pasadena, Tx. to the late Louis Cole and Ray James Fleetwood. Dr. Fleetwood moved to Palacios about six years ago to start Palacios Family Chiropractic. He had previously been a geophysicist with Mobil Oil. He served as President of the Palacios Chamber of Commerce and was in charge of the upcoming Cancer Society Survivors Walk. Active in the community, he has served as Santa Claus and Easter bunny for the city and other civic organizations. He also had a great love of sailing. He is survived by a sister, Mary Lou Kirves; numerous nieces and nephews; and many friends. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Ray Howard Fleetwood.

JAMES PINCKNEY WALLER

Memorial services for James Pinckney Waller, 84, of Tidewater Oaks, were held May 11, 2001 at the Palacios Funeral Home with the Rev. Andy Blair officiating. He died Thursday, May 3, 2001. A native of Nocona, Tex., he was born Nov. 9, 1916 to the late James Pinckney and Denta Titsworth Waller. He joined the Civilian Conservation Corps at the age of 18 and later entered the Army Air Force at Dodd Field in San Antonio. During World War II, he was a member of the 57th Fighter Wing of the 9th Army Air Force; and the 57th Bomber Wing of the 12th Army Air Force, in the European Theatre, as a communication Sgt/Maj. In the 1950s he was a member of the Victoria Chapter of the Civil Air Patrol. He worked for the Texas Highway Department, DuPont, as a real estate broker, and retired from Intermedics at Freeport, Tex. In addition to being an electrician, he also trained dogs, showed Irish Setters and gave obedience classes. He was a life member of the National Rifle Association and an instructor in gun safety. He suffered injuries to his spine and leg in a private plane wreck in 1957, which gradually crippled him and confined him to a wheel chair at the end. He was also a member of VFW Post 2467 of Palacios. Survivors include his children and their spouses: James Waller of Victoria, Betty and Red Kirby of Blessing, Simone and Yves Alart of Berre L'Etang, France, Simone Tipton of Victoria, Dennis and Linda Waller of Missouri City, and Celestine and Donald Merritt of Fort Worth; siblings Wilma (Babe) Winn of Bellville, Joyce Harrison of Washington, Joseph (Hucky) Waller of Mansfield, Erma Kibler of New Mexico, Jeannette Streadwick of Wichita Falls, and Jack (Bill) Waller of Richardson; special people, Marie Vinklarek Calhoun of Victoria and Dedee Susini of Corsica. He was preceded in death by a son, Timothy Waller; two sisters, Elisabeth Butler and Brucella Wheatley; a brother, Weldon Waller and companion, Roberta Wolfer.

DORTHA MAE ROSE MOSIER JONES

Graveside funeral services for Dortha Mae Rose Mosier Jones, 77, of Houston, were held May 4, 2001 at the Palacios cemetery. Mrs. Jones was born Nov. 28, 1923 in Pledger, Tx. She passed away May 1, 2001 in Katy, Tx. She had been a resident of Palacios for 45 years and had resided in Houston for the past 15 years. She is survived by her husband, Allen W. Jones of Katy; two sons, Edwin Leon Mosier, Jr. of Elkhart, Tx. and Charles Mosier of Dallas; a daughter, Dortha Ann Hamm of Bellmead, Tx; two stepsons, Dwayne Jones of Willis, Tx. and Dennis Jones of Tulsa, Okla.; a sister, Emaline Reed of Van Vleck; eight grandchildren; and 26 great-grandchildren.
