Funeral services for Sylvester James Polk, IV, 33 of Palacios were held Feb. 17, 2001 at the First Baptist Church in Palacios with Rev. Tony Flores officiating. Cremation was at Evergreen Memorial Park in Wharton. Mr. Polk was born March 18, 1967 in Palacios to Sylvester Polk, III and Jeanette Deadrick Polk. He died Feb. 9, 2001 at Citizens Memorial Hospital in Victoria following an automobile accident. He was owner and operator of Sly Polk's Seafood delivery business in Palacios. He is survived by his wife, Jessica Puentes Polk; three children, Jazmine, Clarisa and Savion Polk; his father, Sylvester Polk III; sisters Mia Edwards and husband James, and Tonya Pinkston; brothers I. J. Polk, Seaman Polk, Jonathan Polk and Michael Polk; grandmothers Mable Deadrick and Earline Polk; and a host of nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and other relatives and friends. Pallbearers are John Puentes, Thomas Puentes, John Brewer, Robert Woolsey, Carlos Diaz and Rhett Robinson.
CHARLENE LEE SHELTON
Funeral services for Charlene Lee Shelton, 76, of Palacios, were held Feb. 5, 2001 at the First Baptist Church in Palacios with Rev. Hollas Hoffman officating. Interment was at Palacios cemetery. Mrs. Shelton was born July 12, 1924 in Chiderter, Ark. to the late William Dewey and Lela Earl Turbeville Lee. She died Feb. 1, 2001. She was a member of the Alapha Club. She is survived by her sons, Terry Lee and Robby Earl Shelton, both of Houston; a brother, William Aubrey Lee of Houston; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Pallbearers are William Aubrey Lee, Marvin Curtis, Vic Kahlich, J. E. Todd, Billy Hamlin and Lacey Lowry. Memorials may be made to the Palacios Library.
SYLVA LUCILE BARR DAVENPORT
Graveside funeral services for Slyva Lucile Barr Davenport, 100, of Memphis, Tenn. were held Feb. 2, 2001 at the Palacios cemetery with Rev. Andy Blair officiating. Mrs. Davenport was born Sept. 1, 1900 in Maryville, Mo. to the late John James and Emma Rogina Ramige Barr. She died Jan. 30, 2001 at the Applingwood Healthcare Center in Memphis. She was a member of the Presbyterian Church, a resident of Memphis for the past 10 years and a former longtime resident of Palacios. She was a retired registered nurse from Baylor University Hospital in Dallas. She is survived by a niece, Doris Ann Barr of San Antonio; nephew, Richard D. Barr of Saudi Arabia; great nephews Rob and James Barr; and sister-in-law Helen E. Barr of Cordova, Tenn.
GARY WAYNE MOONEYHAM
Funeral services for Gary Wayne Mooneyham, 26, of Palacios were held Feb. 1, 2001 at Palacios Funeral Home Chapel. Interment was at Hawley cemetery near Blessing. Mr. Mooneyham was born Aug. 6, 1974 in Bowie County, Tex. to Curtis W. and Evyone Garner Mooneyham. He died Jan. 29, 2001. He is survivied by a daughter, Destine Mooneyham of El Campo, his parents, Evyone and Curtis W. Mooneyham; and brothers Greg and Kevin Mooneyham of Palacios, and David Mooneyham of San Antonio.
SYLVIA MAE HASKELL
Graveside services for Sylvia Mae Haskell, 93, of Palacios were held Jan. 19, 2001 at Hawley cemetery near Blessing, with the Rev. Charlie Parker officiating. A native of Mangum, Okla., she was born Dec. 8, 1907 to the late James and Effie Mae Long Harris. She died Jan. 18, 2001. She was a homemaker and a Baptist. Survivors include two daughters, Bettye Koontz of Palacios and Willa Koontz of Sugar Land; a sister, Mable Kinard of Bay City; 23 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harry Haskell; sons, Earl Rogers and Donald Rogers; and one grandson. Pallbearers were Henry Penland, Scott Arndt, Andy Arndt, Jeff Franklin, Terry Brossette and Robert Marek.

Funeral services for Ruth Hattie Wheaton, 83, of Blessing were held Jan. 19, 2001 at the Palacios Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Pat Sliva officiating. Interment was at Hawley cemetery near Blessing. Mrs. Wheaton was born Feb. 13, 1932 in Livonia, NY. She died Jan. 17, 2001. She was a resident of Blesing for the past 23 years and a member of the Methodist Church. She is survived by her husband, Rodney M. Wheaton of Blessing; her mother, Maxine Thew of Mt. Morris, NY.; daughers Karen Alvord and husband Dan of Palacios, Kietha Robertson and husband Rick of Pasadena, TX, Kathleen Wheaton and fiance Jim Metzger of Bay City, and Debra Wheaton of Clute, Tx.; sons Timothy Wheaton and wife Karen of Midfield, John Wheaton of Madrid, NY, Eugene Wheaton of Raymondville, NY, and Dana Wheaton and wife Tina of Bay City; sisters Nellie Baker of Perry, NY, Florence Fleischman of Naples, NY, and Hazel Pate of Southern Pines, NC; brother Ronnie Thew of Avon, NY; 14 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her father, Charles Cole.
JEROME W. 'JERRY' FLINT
Funeral services for Jerome W. "Jerry" Flint, 94, of Blessing, were held Jan. 28, 2001 at Taylor Brothers Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. David Zimmer officiating. Interment was at Hawley cemetery near Blessing. Mr. Flint was born Sept. 3, 1906, in Summers County, W. Va., to the late Thomas Wayne and Ocie Ola Taylor Flint. He died Jan. 25, 2001. He was a U.S. Army veteran serving for 20 years, including in World War II. He was a life member and past commander of Blessing Cecil Lee American Legion Post No. 649 and a member of Midfield Community Church. He is survived by his wife, Lillian Kopecky Flint; daughter, Phyllis Anne Beverage of Boca Raton, Fla.; sisters, Christine Flint and Geneva Scott, both of Covington, Va.; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Mr. Amboree was born Aug. 14, 1934, in Boling, to Orange and Mae Ollis Laws Amboree. He died Friday, Jan. 5, 2001. He is survived by daughters, Mildred Barnwell and Linda Fuse, both of Houston; sons, Byron Amboree of Palacios and David Amboree of Minnesota; foster daughter, Charlene Breaux; sisters, Deloris Jones of Iowa City, Iowa and Lillian Easley of Dickerson; brothers, J.C. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 8 at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Blessing with the Rev. Samuel Appiasi officiating. Interment was at St. Peter's Catholic cemetery. Mrs. Vavra was born April 3, 1922 in Hillje, Tx. to the late Henry and Mary Sablatura. She died Jan. 5, 2001. She was a homemaker and a member of St. Peter's Catholic Church in Blessing. Mrs. Vavra is survived by her husband, Edward Frank 'Eddie' Vavra, Sr.; daughters Mary Jo Harvey of Palacios, Yvonee Royston of West Columbia, and Juanita Schweizer of Simpsonville, S.C.; sons Edward Frank Vavra Jr. of Palacios and Dwight Vavra of Markham; a sister, Alvina Grasmuck of Calif.; 13 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by sisters Lilly Cardova, Mollie Livanic, Mary Sutrik and Martha Sablatura; brothers Bill Sablatura, Henry Sablatura, Ed Sablatura, Julius Sablatura, Joe Sablatura, Jerone Sablatura and Ben Sablatura.
RAYMOND A. KURNER
Funeral services for Raymond A. Kurner, 80, of Cape Carancahua will be held 3 p.m., Sunday, Jan. 7, 2001 at Carancahua Chapel, with the Rev. Hollie Briscoe officiating. Interment will be 1 p.m., Monday at Forest Park Westheimer cemetery in Houston. He died Jan. 3. A native of Glen Ridge, N.J., he was born March 29, 1920 to the late Frank and Anna Charlotte Carlson Kurner. A World War II veteran of the Army Air Corps, he was a retired auditor at The Prudential Insurance Co., having served 43 years. He served on the board of directors of the Jackson County Hospital District and as manager of the Cape Carancahua Water District. He was also a member of the Carancahua Chapel. Survivors include the widow, Virginia Bangert Kurner of Cape Carancahua; a daughter Pam Bertram of Bellaire; a son, Bryan Kurner of San Antonio; a sister, Dorothy Fredericks of Bloomfield, N.J.; and a brother, Richard Kurner of Dunnellton, Fla. He was preceded in death by a son, Roger Kurner; and a sister, Ruth Hickman. Pallbearers were Bob Law, Bill Law, Harold Peterson, Gen. Mrs. Bartosh was born March 17, 1914 to Joseph and Amalie Kristek Kana. She died Jan. 2, 2001. She was a homemaker and a member of St. Peter Catholic Church. She is survived by daughters Joan Karasek of East Bernard and Mary Ann Brandl of El Campo; sons Dennis Bartosh of Palacios, Lawrence Bartosh and David Bartosh both of Blessing, and Edward Bartosh of El Campo; sisters Georgie Pilgrim of San Antonio, Martha Mazoch of Baytown, and Dorothy Oliver of Miami, FL.; brothers Ivan Kana of Midfield and Edvin Kana of Bay City; 19 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, William "Bill" Bartosh in 1951; and brothers Charlie and Jerome Kana.
