MELVIN JOSEPH VALENTA
Funeral services for Melvin Joseph Valenta, 60, of Bay City were held Oct. 10, 2000 at the Holy Cross Catholic Church in Bay City with Father Casey Jarzombek officiating. Internment followed in Evergreen Memorial Park. Mr. Valenta was born January 29, 1940 in Lane City to Joe and Theresa Polasek Valenta. He died Oct. 7, 2000 in Bay City. He was a 1958 graduate of Wharton High School and received his degree in Geology from Texas Tech University. He married
Virginia Ruth Lothridge on Feb. 20, 1960 in Palacios. Mr. Valenta was a 37-year resident of Bay City and a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church. He was employed as a engineer for Celanese for the past 37-years. He loved to hunt, garden and raise cattle and emus. Survivors include wife, Virginia Valenta of Bay City; daughters, Denise Valenta and husband, Eric Vazquez, of Georgetown, Valerie Henson and husband, Bruce, of Bay City, and Venessa Valenta of Houston; and grandchildren, Christina and Alyssa Henson. Mr. Valenta was preceeded in death by his brother, Robert Valenta in 1995. Pallbearers were David Valenta, Robert Dale Valenta, Lawrence Valenta, Franklin Valenta, John Caron and Scott Smith. Honarary pallbearers were all his many friends and co-workers at Celanese.
STELLA TALBOT STORK
Funeral services for Stella Talbot Stork, 84, of Palacios, were set for 2 p.m. Monday, Oct. 9, 2000 at the Palacios Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Hollas Hoffman officiating. Interment will be at Palacios cemetery. Mrs. Stork was born Feb. 3, 1916. Formerly of Alabama, she was a resident of Palacios for the past 50 years. She was a homemaker and a member of the First Baptist Church of Palacios. She is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, June and William Jones of Theodore, Al., and Lola Ginger and Jerry Neimeyer of Channelview, Tx.; a son and daughter-in-law, Gerald Lamar and Betty Stork of Palacios; 14 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren. Pallbearers are Ted Bates, Jr., Jerry Neimeyer Jr., Bryan Rushton, Michael Jones, Joseph Denman and Jonathan Markel.
NELLIE ANN TEFFETELLER FOSTER
Funeral services for Nellie Ann Teffeteller Foster, 59, of Blessing, were held Oct. 7, 2000 at Taylor Brothers Funeral Home. Interment was at Hawley cemetery. Mrs. Foster was born Nov. 18, 1940 in Maryville, Tenn. to the late James Louis and Chloe Perry Teffeteller. She died Oct. 5, 2000 in Bay City. She is survived by her husband, Earl Foster, of Blessing; her mother of Buffalo, Tx.; a daughter, Shelley R. Foster of Blessing; a son, Troup Foster, Jr. of Texas; a sister, Betty Jo Phillips of Liberty Hill, Tx.; a brother, Jerry Teffeteller of Dallas; and two grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her father and a grandson, T. J. Foster.
BOBBY PRICE BABCOCK
Funeral services for Bobby Price Babcock, 85, of Austin, were held Oct. 7, 2000 at the University Presbyterian Church with Rev. San Williams officiating. Interment was at Austin Memorial Park. Bobby was born to Norma Lilla Harris and Robert Lee Price on Dec. 6, 1915 in Palacios, Texas. She died Oct. 3, 2000 with her family by her side, after battling lung cancer. Mrs. Babcock graduated from Palacios High School and from John Tarleton Jr. College in Stephenville, Tx. After college she worked as an accountant in Bay City, Tx. until her marriage to Frank E. Babcock, Jr. on May 17, 1940. Early in their marriage they made their home in Louisiana, living most of that time in New Orleans where their two daughters were born. Upon retirement, they moved to Austin in 1957 which has been home ever since. Frank passed away in 1984. Bobby had a gentle and loving spirit and a zest for life that was an inspiration to those around her. She always saw the best in every situation and never had an unkind word to say about anyone. She loved to travel and visit many places around the country and around the world; her favorite trips were to Hawaii and Santa Fe with her family and trips to far off places with her traveling buddy, Elvira Wyatt. She was a devoted member of the University Presbyterian Church for over 40 years. Fondly known to many as "Mrs. B.", Bobby leaves many cherished memories of times she and Frank spent with their daughters and their friends in Wimberley, Creedmoor, and at Lake LBJ. She is survived by her two daughters and their husbands, Alice and Randy Randolph of Cincinnati, Ohio and Carolyn and John Turney of Austin; two granddaughters, Sara and Mollie Randolph of Cincinnati; three step-grandchildren, Jennifer and Lindsey Turney of Austin and Bo Turney of Denver, Colorado. She is also survived by two sisters, Maxine and her husband, Reverend Carroll Ray of Burleson, and Nancy and her husband, Harry Sisson of Houston; brother-in-law, Burnell Waldrep of Weatherford, several nieces and nephews and many lifelong friends. She was preceded in death by a sister, Cherry Price Waldrep, a niece, Norma Waldrep, and a nephew, Neal Waldrep.
RUBY ELEANOR MATHIS
Funeral services for Ruby Eleanor Mathis, 91, of Cape Carancahua, will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Oct. 2, 2000 at the First Baptist Church in Palacios with Rev. Hollas Hoffman officiating. Interment will be at Olivia cemetery. Mrs. Mathis was born May 7, 1909 in Siloam Springs, Ark. to Zechariah and Hattie Cupp. She died Sept. 28, 2000. She was a resident of Cape Carancahua for the past nine years and a former resident of Waller, Tx. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Palacios and was a retired cashier/waitnress. She was also an oil paint artist. She is survived by her daughter, Madge E. Ammons of Cape Carancahua; a son, James B. Armstrong of Texas City; a sister, Marie Fergerson of Cherry Hill, Calif.; five grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
DON MARQUESS
Memorial services for Don Marquess, 64, of Salado were held Tuesday, Sept. 5, 2000 at the Heartfield Funeral Home Chapel in Belton, with the Rev. Skip Blanchatt officiating. Interment was at Calvert cemetery in Calvert. He died Sept. 1, 2000 in a Temple hospital. Mr. Marquess was born July 27, 1936 in Temple to the late Harry Clyde Marquess and Frances Rather Marquess. He was a graduate of Palacios High School and the University of Texas-Austin and formerly served in the U.S. Air Force Reserves. He worked in sales for WilsonArt in the 1970s and was owner-operator of MarJon, Inc., in Atlanta, Ga., from 1976 to 1992. He moved back to Bell County, Texas in 1992 and was co-owner of Horseshoe Wood Products at Temple until his death. He was a Methodist. Survivors include the widow, Eleanor "Ellie" Francis Marquess (to whom he was married
on March 15, 1960 in San Antonio) of Salado; two sons, Scott Marquess and his wife, Robin, of Charlotte, N.C., and Keith Marquess and his wife, Lynn, of Montgomery, Ala.; one daughter, Michelle Marquess of Arlington; one brother, Jim Marquess and his wife, Rita, of Spricewood; and two grandsons, Jeffrey Scott Marquess, Jr., and Benjamin Marlow Marquess. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.
ROBERT JAY "BOB" WILKINSON
Funeral services for Robert Jay "Bob" Wilkinson, 84, of Bay City, were held 3 p.m., Monday, Sept. 25, 2000 at the First Presbyterian Church in Bay City. The Rev. Allen Anderson officiated, followed by interment at Roselawn Memorial Park cemetery in Van Vleck. He died Friday, Sept. 22, 2000 at the Gulf Coast Medical Center in Wharton. Mr. Wilkinson was born in Collegeport on Sept. 9, 1916 to the late Walter William and Helen Leonora Gossett Wilkinson. He graduated from Bay City High School, where he delivered the salutatory address, in 1934. In 1938, he graduated from the University of Texas-Austin with a degree in journalism. At UT, he was elected to Sigma Delta Chi, a national honorary and professional journalism fraternity, and worked on the university newspaper, The Daily Texan, writing the first story about the UT tower illuminated in orange following football victories. In 1938, he became sports editor and a news reporter for the Bay City Daily Tribune. On Dec. 28, 1939, he married
Luceile Huebner, daughter of Lillian Hurst and Marion Taylor Huebner, in the First Presbyterian Church of Bay City. On Jan. 1, 1940, he became editor of The Herald, a weekly Bay City newspaper. In World War II, Mr. Wilkinson joined the U.S. Navy in 1943 and while stationed at the Corpus Christi Naval Training Center, he was editor of The Beam, the base newspaper. He left to serve in the Pacific aboard the U.S.S. Lind, with the Third and Fifth Fleets, and at wars end, he was present at the Japanese surrender ceremony board the U.S.S. Missouri in Tokyo Bay on Sept. 2, 1945. He received his honorable discharge from the Navy in February 1946, and in June of that year published the first issue of the Bay City News. Eleven years later, he sold the News to devote full time in the oil business with his father. The business of W.W. Wilkinson & Sons was dissolved after his father' death in 1968, and he became an independent oil operator and lease broker. His son, Robert J. "Bobby" Wilkinson joined him in 1977, becoming the third generation of Wilkinsons in the oil business. Mr. Wilkinson was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, a founding member of the Bay City Country Club and Matagorda County Texas Exes, a member of the Petroleum Club of Houston, and several professional and civic organizations. Survivors include: wife, Luceile of Bay City; son and daughter-in-law, Bobby and Peggy Wilkinson of Bay City; daughter and son-in-law, Martha and Clayton Lake of Las Vegas, Nev.; grandchildren, Malynn Ashcraft of Broken Arrow, Okla., Clay Lake of Las Vegas, Nev., Chris Wilkinson and Mindy Wilkinson of Bay City; great-grandchildren, Morgan Reber, Maurice "Buddy" Ashcraft III and Sarah Ashcraft, all of Broken Arrow, Okla.; aunt, Jean Gossett of Salesville, Ohio; brother-in-law, Raleigh Huebner of Bay City; sister-in-law, Jean Huebner of Bay City; nephews, Jack Wilkinson, Jr. of Houston, Kent Cummins of Elgin, Don Huebner of Buffalo, Tex., Doug and Bill Huebner of Bay City; nieces, Helen Fitch of Corpus Christi, Carol Bascom of Tucson, Ariz., Marion Lester of Fort Worth, Janet Considine of Midland, and Jean Richardson of Bay City. FLOYD A. DAWSON
Funeral services for Floyd A. Dawson, 91, of Warren, Ind., scheduled 1 p.m., Friday, Sept. 22, 2000 at Glancy Funeral Homes-H. Brown & Son Chapel, Warren with Pastor Tim Helms officiating, followed by interment in Asbury cemetery, Montpelier, Ind. Mr. Dawson died Sept. 18 at the United Methodist Memorial Home in Warren. A native of Jackson Township, Ind., he was born Jan. 11, 1909 to the late Harrison 'Mack" Dawson and Corena M. Brown Dawson. A lifetime resident of Wells County, Ind., he worked for the county highway department for over 30 years, was a farmer, past president of the Twin Bridge Conservation Club in Mt. Zion and sexton of the Asbury cemetery. Survivors include the widow, Mary Louise McMillan Dawson, two whom he was married
on Oct. 17, 1936; five sons, David and Linda Dawson of Palacios, Tex., Dean and Jackie Dawson of Marion, Ind., Daniel and Barb Dawson of Berne, Ind., Dennis Dawson of Dickinson, Tex., and Dallas Dawson of Warren, Ind.; one sister, Mabel Booher of Fort Wayne, Ind.; one brother, Al Dawson of Hartford City, Ind.; 12 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. Funeral services for Alta Mae Byers Bishop Moore, 87, of Edna, were held Sept. 21, 2000 at Palacios Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Russell Minton officiating. Interment was at Palacios cemetery. Mrs. Moore was born Oct. 4, 1912 in Henderson County, Tx. to the late Granville Marcus and Mollie Pearl Reed Byers. She died Sept. 19, 2000. She was a resident of Edna since 1977 and a former longtime resident of Palacios. She is survived by four daughters, Bobbie Burditt, Edwina Fenner and Mary Brown, all of Edna, and Charlene Rigdon of San Antonio; sons Clarence Bishop of San Antonio and Kenneth Bishop of South Padre Island; a sister, Ann Charnetski of Tuscaloosa, Ala.; 24 grandchildren, 44 great-grandchildren; and 12 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Ernest "Eddie" Bishop, and her second husband, Charlie Moore; a son, Ernest Edward Bishop; two sisters, Opal Williams and Edith Harris; and two brothers, Thurman Byers and R. C. Byers.

Mrs. Cerda was born March 8, 1933 in Olivia, Tx. to Jose Angel and Guadalupe Navarro Leijha. She died Aug. 26, 2000 in Baytown. She was survived by her mother of Bay City; daughters Jacqueline Ramirez of Palacios, Belinda Castillo of Bay City, and Dolly Craft of Baytown; a son, Joe Anthony Cerda of Brown-wood; a sister, Frances Guerra of Bay City; brothers Ross N. Leijha of North Carolina and Lupe Leijha of New Mexico; 15 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
