ARTHUR 'RED' FOSTER
A rosary for Arthur "Red" Foster, 86, of Blessing, will be recited 6:30 p.m. Sunday, April 30 at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Blessing. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Monday, May 1 at the church with the Rev. Sam Appiasi officiating. Burial will be at St. Peter’s Catholic cemetery.
He was born Jan. 8, 1914, in Athens, to the late Frederick and Nellie Bethel Foster. He died Saturday, April 29, 2000.
He was a retired heavy equipment operator and a member of St. Peters Catholic Church. He was a resident of Blessing since 1942.
He is survived by his wife, Ollie Brod Foster; son, Arthur B. Foster of Pearland; and two grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a sister, Evelyn Crawford.
MANUEL VALDEZ
Funeral services for Manuel Valdez, 60, of Blessing, were held April 27, 2000 at Taylor Brothers Funeral Home Chapel in Bay City. Interment was at Cedarvale Cementery in Bay City.
Mr. Valdez was born Oct. 20, 1939, in New Mexico, to the late Jesse and Sarah Rico Valdez. He died April 25, 2000. He was an oilfield pusher and a Pentecostal.
He is survived by his wife, Sophie Reyes Valdez; daughters, Sarah Valdez of El Campo, Joann Moya of Bay City, Dianna Marin of Blessing and Cindy Nieto of Palacios; son, Javier Valdez of Blessing; five sisters; two brothers; and 14 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Gloria Valdez.
KENNETH A. MIXON
Funeral services for Kenneth A. Mixon, 58, of Baytown, were held April 21, 2000 at the Palacios cemetery with the Rev. Brett Moreland officiating.
Mr. Mixon was born September 11, 1941 in Beaumont, TX to Othel O. and Myrtle Faye Buffaloe Mixon. He died April 19, 2000 at San Jacinto Methodist Hospital in Baytown.
A resident of Baytown for 36 years and a former resident of Palacios, Mr. Mixon was the founder and organizer of the band "The Jokers" in Palacios.
He is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law: Terry and Todd Turner of Anahuac, TX, and Trudy and Wayne Henscey of Mt. Belvieu, TX; his mother: Faye Mixon Baughman of Baytown; five grandchildren: Shae and Cole Turner of Anahuac, Colby, Chase and Camryn Henscey of Mt. Belvieu; and by his aunt: Birdie "Pete" Bloomer of Palacios.
He was preceded in death by his father, Othel O. Mixon; his grandmother, Ruth Buffaloe Evans; his uncle, Rufus Buffaloe; and his close friend, Jack Traylor.
Honorary Pallbearers were Jon Claybourn, Lacey Lowry, Kenneth Cook, Harold Pennington, Verner L. "Butch" Bowers, Jr. and Kenneth Countryman.
ROSALIE FAY WEESE
A memorial service for Rosalie Fay Weese, 68, of Palacios, will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday (April 29, 2000) at the Palacios Pavilion. If bad weather occurs the service will be moved to the Palacios Faith Center.
Mrs. Weese was born May 22, 1942 in Jackson County to the late Kenneth L. Cass and Elsie L. Gravil. She died April 14, 2000.
A member of the First Baptist Church of Palacios, Mrs. Weese was also a nurse's aid in Bay City.
She is survived by her husband, Lois Ray Weese; two sisters and brother-in-laws, June and Jack Fox of California and Carol and Lynn Greer of California; a brother, Robert Cherry of California; a daughter and son-in-law, Debbie and Chris Gonzales of Palacios; a son and daughter-in-law, Rodger and Moneke Weese of Galveston; and four grandchildren, Lisa Gonzales, Angel Gonzales, Joseph Weese, and Matthew Weese.
VALENA P. HAYTON
Funeral services for Valena P. Hayton, 87, will be held April 19 at Thompson Funeral Home in Jacksonville, Tx.
Mrs. Hayton was born Oct. 3, 1912 in Newark, Ark. to Albert B. and Clara Walker Clark. She died April 16, 2000.
She is survived by two daughters, June Hall of Panama City, Fla. and Shirley Haswell of Houston; three sons, Donald Hyett of Palacios, Thomas Hayton of San Antonio, and Joseph Hayton of Houston; 11 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Residents’ Activity Fund, Palacios Healthcare Center, Palacios, Tx.
JOE JOHNSON
Funeral services for Joe Johnson, 67, of Tres Palacios, were held April 15, 2000 at Davis Funeral Chapel in Needville with Rev. Bob Birch officiating. Interment was in Needville Public cemetery.
Mr. Johnson was born Jan. 7, 1922, to the late Carroll and Bernice Johnson. He died April 11, 2000 in Palacios.
Mr. Johnson was a member of Solid Rock Fellowship Church in Palacios.
He is survived by a daughter, Sarah Elizabeth Kresta and husband, Chris, of Shape, Belguim; 5 sons, Don Johnson and wife, Barbara, of Boling; James Turk Johnson and wife, Collette, of McAllen; Billy Joe Johnson of Boling; Avery Johnson and wife, Beverly, of Claremore, OK; Matt Johnson and wife, Becky, of Boling;a nephew, Dewayne Walker; 15 grandchildren; and 4 great grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Johnson; son, Carroll Johnson; parents, Carroll and Bernice Johnson; and sister, Bob Ruth Walker.
Pallbearers were Kenneth Black, Mike Black, Dwayne Walker, Dee Taylor, Lee Hamilton, and Kyle Auld. Honorary pallbearers are Dwayne Taylor, Tony Auld, and Tom Black.
WILLIAM WESLEY HUNT
Funeral services for William Wesley Hunt, 78, of Bay City, were held April 1, 2000 at the Palacios Funeral Home. Interment followed at the Palacios Funeral Home.
Mr. Hunt was born June 26, 1921 in Terrell, TX to the late John W. and Eva Beatrice Browning Hunt. He died March 30, 2000.
A veteran of WWII serving in the U.S. Army where he was Sgt. with H.Q. Company, 3rd Battalion, 27 Infantry, Mr. Hunt was also a Physical Institutor 283 (Judo Institutor). He received the American Theater Service Medal, Asiatic Pacific Service Medal, and the Philippian Liberation Service Medal with one Bronze Star.
He is survived by his wife, Odessa Moore Hunt of Bay City; three daughters, Mary Gregory of Grandbury, TX, Eva Crenshaw of Bay City and Linda Baker of Bay City; a son, John Wesley Hunt of Edna; a sister, Arline Huppert of Dallas; three brothers, Jim Hunt, B.J. Hunt, and A.J. Hunt; and six grandchildren.
ELLEN SCOTT SHELTON
Graveside services for Ellen Scott Shelton, 85, of San Antonio and formerly of Palacios, were held April 15, at the Palacios cemetery with Rev. Andy Blair of the First Presbyterian Church officiating.
Mrs. Shelton was born Sept. 29, 1914 to James Henry Brotemarkle and Phoebe Anna Scott Brotemarkle in Kirwin, Kansas. She died April 6, 2000 at Southwest Methodist Hospital in San Antonio.
Her family moved to Palacios when she was 11 years old and she lived there until she married
Beverly Ellison Shelton, now deceased, in 1932. For the past 15 years Mrs. Shelton lived in San Antonio.
She is survived by two children and one son-in-law, James Poe Shelton of New York City and Beverly Shelton Acker and her husband, Edwin, of Tilden; a brother, Norman Brotemarkle of Palacios; three grandchildren and their spouses, David and Linda Hollers of Brush Prairie, Washington, Scott and Michele Acker of Cedar Park, Shella and Wesley Bonner of Taft; and five great grandchildren, Jennifer and Shelton Hollers of Austin, Brianna and Elyse Acker of Cedar Park, and Rachel Bonner of Taft.
ELSIE FERN HARVEY
Funeral services for Elsie Fern Harvey, 84, of Palacios, were held April 8, 2000 at Palacios Funeral Home with Rev. Charlie Parker officiating. Interment was at Palacios cemetery.
Mrs. Harvey was born Sept. 21, 1915 in Matagorda County to Frank Jerod and Elsie M. Shumaker Powers. She died April 5, 2000 in Bay City.
She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Palacios, a member of the Pink Ladies with over 8, 000 hours of service, an election judge at Prairie Center near Palacios, and a member of the Home Demonstration Club for many years.
She is survived by a daughter, Bobbie Middleton of Bay City; a son, Carroll L. Harvey, of Palacios; a sister, Faye Harvey of Houston; a brother, Wilber Powers of Port Neches, Tx.; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Cleddie C. Harvey.
Pallbearers were Lusty Crain, Phil Richman, Royce Harvey, Ed Schulze, Jack Waechter and Ted Bates, Jr.
LAURA INEZ DUFFY HADLEY
Graveside services for Laura Inez (Duffy) Hadley, 77, of Blessing held April 1 at the Hawley cemetery near Blessing with Rev. Joe Ramsey officiating.
Mrs. Hadley was born Aug. 18, 1922 in Blessing to John Duffy and Emily Roberts Duffy. She died March 25, 2000.
She was a lifelong resident of Blessing and a graduate of Blessing High School and attended nursing school in Houston. She was a member of the Episcopal Church. She had raised cattle and had worked for various companies, most recently Red Barn Laundromat. She had also been a child care provider. She married
the late Jack Hadley on July 9, 1948.
She is survived by her brother, Dan Duffy, of Great Falls, MT.; cousins Dr. Jim and Sandra Davant of Blessing and their children, Roxanne Crain, James Davant and Mike Davant of Blessing and Julie Davant of Austin; cousins Carolyn Fricke and Kathy Higgins of Port Lavaca, Bill Davant of Victoria, Geria Wilson of Sulphur, La., and Teddi Perry of Alberta, CA.; and by many friends and acquaintances.
