BERTHA MACHA KOPECKY
Graveside funeral services for Bertha Macha Kopecky, 85, of Bay City, were held Feb. 21 at Hawley cemetery near Blessing.
Mrs. Kopecky was born Jan. 7, 1905 in Granger, TX to Henry and Rosie Macha Rozacky. She died Feb. 17, 2000.
A housewife and a member of the Czech Brethren Church, she had been a resident of Bay City for the past 58 years.
She is survived by stepdaughters Lydia K. Gate of Bay City and Ollie Nedbalek of Houston; sisters-in-law Lillie Flint and husband, Jerry, of Blessing and Vlasta “Blonde” Domorod of Markham; nieces Sybil Stojanik of Austin and Bertha Sefeak of Taylor; 14 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, V. L. Kopecky; her parents, Henry and Rosie Rozacky; stepsister, Helen Loraine Smith; stepbrothers, Gus Kopecky and Virgil Lee Kopecky; and eight brothers and sisters.
ELMO 'PETE' DUKE, SR.
Funeral services for Elmo "Pete" Duke, Sr., 84, of Ganado, were scheduled for 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 16, 2000 at Taylor Bros. Funeral Home with Rev. Charles Dwomoh officiating. Interment will be at Hawley cemetery near Blessing.
Mr. Duke was born Nov. 16, 1915 in Eagle Lake, Tx. to Roma Duke and Fannie Miles Duke. He died Feb. 13, 2000 at Citizens Medical Center in Victoria.
He grew up in Iowa Colony where he was a rice farmer for many years. He loved the outdoors and spent many happy days at deer camp with his family. He was a proud and sensitive man who loved his family deeply. He was a member of Assumption Catholic Church in Ganado where he had lived for the past 3-1/2 years.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Mayme Calo Duke of Ganado; daughter and son-in-law, Marjorie and Frank Planka of Alvin; sons and daughters-in-law, Anthony and Caroline Duke of Danbury, and Elmo Duke, Jr. and Marianne Duke of Palacios; 10 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers are grandsons Frank Plank, Jr., Elmo Duke, III, John Duke, Anthony Duke, Jr., Ronald Duke, Monte Duke, Mark Greenawalt and Tom Gray. Honorary pallbearers are his great-grandsons.
EMILIE MERCKEL JAGER
Funeral services for Mrs. Emilie Merckel Jager, 84, of Blessing scheduled for 10 a.m., Wednesday, Feb. 16, 2000 at the First Baptist Church of Blessing with the Rev. Luther Carroll officiating. Interment in Hawley cemetery. She died Saturday, Feb. 12.
A native of Woodville, she was born Dec. 16, 1915 to the late Jacob and Pauline Witcher Merckel. She was a homemaker and a member of the First Baptist Church.
Survivors include four sons, Tom Lee Jager and Carl Jager, both of Blessing, Mitchel Jager of Waco and Raymond Jager of Alvin; three half-brothers, Theodore Merckel of Aransas Pass, August Merckel of Gretna, La. and Herbert Merckel of Homa, La.; eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Herman Jager; two sons, Leroy and Paul John Jager; one sister and two half-brothers.

LOIS MILDRED ROANE
Funeral services for Mrs. Lois Mildred Roane, 84, of Palacios, were held Friday, Nov. 5, 1999, at the Palacios Funeral Home with the Rev. Charlie Parker officiating. Interment was in the Palacios cemetery.
Mrs. Roane died Nov. 3. She was born Sept. 2, 1915 in Schulenburg to the late James Drew and Kizzie Mayes. A retired teacher from Central Elementary School in Palacios, where she taught for 13 years, Mrs. Roane had resided in Palacios for the past 38 years. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Bertram and a former member of the Athena Club in Palacios.
Survivors include one daughter, Kay Roane of Houston; a niece, Kathy Mayes of San Antonio; and a great-niece, Lynann Ball, formerly of San Antonio.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Oscar Mitchell Roane; two sisters, Ella Lee Mayes and Johnnie Ruth Williams; and one brother, Milton Drew Mayes. Pallbearers included Mike Finch, Roger Gillaspy, Raymond Mitchell and the Rev. Charlie Parker.
JULIUS HARVEY “SHORTY” HUNTER
Funeral services for Julius Harvey “Shorty” Hunter, 68, of Palacios, will be held at 3 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 10, 1999 at Taylor Bros. Funeral Home Chapel in Palacios with Charles Collins officiating. Interment will follow at Palacios cemetery.
Shorty was born Dec. 4, 1930 in Sugar Hill, TX to the late O.B. Hunter and Bonnie R. Griffin Hunter. He died November 7, 1999.
Shorty is survived by sisters, Hazel Hawkins of Palacios and Ann Lee of Humble, TX; brothers Aluis “Pete” Hunter of San Antonio and Trammel Hunter of Palacios; wife Helena Ione Petit of 45 years and family; Karen and Roger Bishop, Brandy and Steven Ramirez, Lacee and Josh; Wayne and Cathy Hunter, Deanne, Shawn and Dax Johnson, Daryl and Derek; Donna and Jack Campbell, Kristi and Casey of Humble, TX; Mike and Jeanie Hunter, Lauren, Lisa, Brad Woodward and Mandy Vecera of Palacios; Keith and Paulette Hunter, Savannah and Madison of Palacios; Cathy and Mark Merck, Danyelle and Matthew of Collegeport; and Janice McChesney of Spring, TX and Chris McChesney of Houston.

ANITA SOPHIE
Funeral services for Anita Sophie "Granny" Rickaway, 94, of Blessing, were held Nov. 9, 1999 at Taylor Bros. Funeral Home in Bay City.
Mrs. Rickaway was born June 15, 1905 in Burton to the late John Beckmann and Elizabeth Schultze. She died Nov. 6, 1999. She was a homemaker and a Baptist.
She is survived by her sons Albert Rickaway of Brazoria and Eugene Rickaway of Midfield; ten grandchildren, and 19 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband Robert Rickaway; daughter, Doris Barber; sisters, Hermenia Thormahlen, Lorena Neumann; brothers, Charlie Beckmann, Ruben Beckmann; grandson, Richard Rickaway; and great-grandson, Daniel Kimmel.
KHOA VAN NGUYEN
Funeral services for Khoa Van Nguyen, 84, of Palacios, were held Nov. 6, 1999 at St. Anthony's of Padua Church Vietnamese Apostolate. Interment was at the Palacios cemetery.
Mr. Nguyen was born Jan. 1, 1915 in Vietnam to the late The Van Nguyen and The Thi Nguyen. He died Nov. 3, 1999 in Bay City.
Mr. Nguyen was a resident of Palacios for ten years, a retired commercial fisherman, and was a member of St. Anthony's of Padua Church Vietnamese Apostolate in Palacios.
He is survived by his wife, Que Thi Nguyen of Palacios; daughters Ngoan, Thi Nguyen, Tinh Thi Nguyen, Che Thi Nguyen, Ngot Thi Nguyen, and Thom Thi Nguyen, all of Palacios; sons Toi Van Nguyen and Pham Van Nguyen, both of Palacios, and by thirty-six grandchildren.
