ANTHONY TOAN THANH NGUYEN
Funeral services for Tony Toan Nguyen, 51, of Sugar Land, Tx., were held July 30, 2011 at Saint Laurence Catholic Church in Sugar Land. Internment was at Forest Park at Westheimer and Dairy Ashford in Houston, Tx.
Mr. Nguyen was born on April 26, 1960 in Bien Hoa, Vietnam. He is the oldest son of Tu Van Nguyen and Ty Thi Nguyen.
Tony is the brother of Yen Bach Tran of Palacios, An Thanh Nguyen, Phuong Ngoc Nguyen and Chi Lan Nguyen of Houston. His parents are devout Catholics from Quan Phuong village, Hai Hau district, Nam Dinh, North Vietnam. They moved to the South in 1954 to escape the imminent Communist persecution.
After having resettled in the South, Mr. Nguyen’s parents rebuilt their lives at Da Minh parish, Tan Mai district, Bien Hoa Province. Mr. Nguyen has been a filial son. He had assisted his parents in running their business while being a student in middle school up to the day his family had to leave for the United States when the war ended in 1975.
In the U.S. Mr. Nguyen’s family lived in Atlantic, Iowa. Then on March of 1979, the family moved to Palacios, Texas. Mr. Nguyen continued his education and while attending high school he began to work part-time to assist his family. Afterward, Mr. Nguyen became an entrepreneur and began his business. He owned and operated the gulf shrimp boat, Princess V., for seven years. Mr. Nguyen ran his business, The Point, in Palacios for thirteen years until his illness. He married
Kim Yen Vu of Biloxi, Mississippi in December 1984. Mrs. Vu is now the Principal of Stafford Primary School in Stafford, Tx. They have three children: two sons, Julian 22 and Jonathan 19 and an eleven years old daughter, Joanna. The Nguyens have lived in Sugar Land, TX since 2004.
On July 21, 2008, Mr. Nguyen’s father passed away in Palacios, TX, which has been a big loss for Mr. Nguyen and his family. Exactly three years later, on July 22, 2011 at 7:35 p.m., Mr. Nguyen left this world after having fought courageously against pancreatic cancer for two and a half months.
Upon receiving the news that Mr. Nguyen had cancer, not only were his wife, his children, his mother, and siblings stricken with a tremendous grief, but all of his friends and acquaintances were also shocked with sorrow. To them, Mr. Nguyen is an example of a virtuous man who lived his life according to the Catholic faith and strived to abide by the Eight Beatitudes. Indeed, Mr. Nguyen is a loving family man who loved and devoted himself totally to his wife and children, a filial son who respected and cared for his parents, a kind older brother who had taken care of his younger siblings while they were young, a faithful friend who always went out of the way to lend a hand when needed. To others, Mr. Nguyen is an example of the Creed: “God Is Love” throughout the charitable works that he had done since growing up.
After more than two months of fighting against the deadly cancer with complete faith in God, Mr. Nguyen has peacefully left this world to return to God’s side, leaving his family and friends with a deep grief of loss. However, during his final days, his firm belief in God’s will have been demonstrated as clearly as the Gospel posted near his side: “Yes, Father, for such has been Thy gracious will.” (Matthew 11:26)
Even though Mr. Nguyen had left this world, to all who knew him, Tony the man and his good heart will continue to stay with them as the French writer Émile Henriot once said, “I firmly believe that the dead continue to stay alive as long as there are people remembering them.” Yes, to all who know him, Mr. Nguyen still lives among them because his character and compassion will continue to remind them to be more compassionate, more spiritual, and better.
