JUDY KAY SARDELICH-TEDENS
Funeral services for Judy Kay Sardelich-Tedens, 46, of Markham, Tx., were held July 29, 2011 at Taylor Bros. Funeral Home with Rev. Louis Rush officiating. Interment was at Hawley cemetery near Blessing, Tx.
She was born July 25, 1965 in McAllen, Tx. to Leonard Ray Kelley and Frankie Marie Quinn Kelley. She passed away July 26, 2011.
She is survived by her husband John Henry Tedens VI of Markham; daughters Jennifer Srubar and husband Chad of Midfield and Janet Boehm and husband Jason of Victoria; mother Frankie Marie Kelley of El Maton; sister Linda Buford of McAllen; brothers Randy Kelley and wife Linda of El Maton, Frank Kelley and wife Loretta of Collegeport; and by “Weezer Lou” of Markham.
She was preceded in death by her father.
JIMMIE JOE SABLATURA
Funeral services for Jimmie Joe Sablatura, 70, of Palacios, Tx. were held July 26, 2011 at the Assumption Catholic Cemetary in Ganado, Tx. Pastor Tony Wishert officiated the services with full military honors under the auspices of American Legion Post #346 of Ganado.
Jimmie was born on Sept. 17, 1940 in Ganado, Tx. to the late Pete Sablatura and Annie Migel Sablatura. He passed away, July 22, 2011.
He was a butcher, an oil-field foreman, and craftsman. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy (Rank - E2) and a volunteer of the Lion’s Club in Louise, Louise Volunteer Fire Department, KJZT, and SPJST.
He is survived by his wife, Beverly Tate-Sablatura; daughters, Beverly Ann Luck of Houston, Marjorie Ann Zamora of Palacios, Jessica Ann Sablatura of Palacios, Krystal Ann Carmack of Golden Meadow, La., and Clarissa Ann Sablatura of Golden Meadow, La.; 16 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Jerome Sablatura and Daniel Sablatura.
Pallbearers are his grandsons, Jimmie Allen Sablatura, Joshua Heath, Omar Sablatura, David Luchak, and his two son-in-laws, Gerardo Zamora and Rick Luck.
Honorary pallbearers are his grandsons, Eddie Sablatura, Freddie Heath Jr., Christopher Sablatura, Dawson Sablatura, Tyler Luck, and Tommy Dardar III.
LEONARD KUNEFKE, SR.
Funeral services for Leonard “Uncle Bro” Kunefke, Sr., 90, of Palacios, Tx., were held July 28, 2011 at the First Baptist Church in Palacios with Rev. Hollas Hoffman officiating.
Interment was at the Palacios cemetery with full military honors provided by VFW Post 2438 of Bay City & VFW Post 2467 of Palacios.
Mr. Kunefke was born July 27, 1920 in Winnie, TX to the late William Paul and Gladys Emeline Adams Kunefke. He went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, July 26, 2011.
He served his country proudly during WWII in the Marine Corps in the Pacific Theatre. He moved to Palacios in 1946 where he married
Agnes Maples in 1947 and had four beautiful children. He worked for Sun Oil Co. for 33 years; after retiring he had a passion for shrimping. He was loved by everyone who knew him, and will be greatly missed.
Leonard is survived by his loving family: daughters, Lynelle Plant & husband Johnny, Kathy Conrad & husband Ricky, and Vicki Kunefke, his son, Leonard Kunefke, Jr. & wife Vanessa, six grandchildren, fourteen great grandchildren, and his sister Thelma Standley & husband Troy.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 52 years, Agnes Maples Kunefke; and three brothers Verna, Ralph & Robert Kunefke.
Grandchildren Sean Conrad, Corri Perez, Jay Plant, John David Plant, Brent Kunefke & Kristin Neumann served as pallbearers.

JOE STRAUSS
A Funeral Mass for Joe Strauss, 87, of Shiner, Tx., was held July 21, 2011 at Sts. Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church in Shiner. Interment was at the Shiner Catholic cemetery.
Mr. Stauss was born Jan. 23, 1924, to Otto and Agnes (Netardus) Strauss. He passed away July 18, 2011.
He graduated from St. Ludmila’s Academy in 1941 and enrolled in a government school (NYA) at Inks Dam, Tx. taking courses in commercial printing. He briefly went to work for the Victoria Advocate before joining the Army Air Force during WWII where he was stationed in the U.S. and Italy until late 1945.
Shortly after returning for the WWII, he went to work for Lee and Angeline Sedlmeyer at the Shiner Gazette before taking a position as territory sales representative for the Houston branch of EC Palmer Paper Company. He spent the next 51 years selling paper, graphic supplies and equipment to print shop and newspaper customers throughout south central Texas.
Joe and his wife Gladys (Appelt) were married
in Hallettsville on Sept. 12, 1953. They made their home in Schulenburg before moving to Shiner in 1957.
They purchased the Shiner Gazette in 1975 and published the paper until 1992 when they sold it to Tex Rogers. They were active members in the Texas Press Association and the South Texas Press Association.
Besides playing with the Shiner Hobo Band, Strauss also formed a band in the 60’s which became popular music makers under the name “VFW Toppers.” Later he put together a group of musicians and entertained local crowds to the sounds of “Joe and His Pivo Boys.”
He is survived by his wife, Gladys Strauss, of Shiner; daughter, Marian Evers and husband Jim of Wimberley, Tx.; sons, Bobby Strauss and wife Sandra of Shiner, Patrick Strauss and wife Lori of Victoria, Tx. and Mark Strauss and wife Kim of Brenham, Tx.; 10 grandchildren; and one great-grandson.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Agnes Kutach, Tillie Wharton, and Mary Hill; and brothers, Henry J. Strauss, Otto J. Strauss, Victor C. Strauss, and Benedict “Ben” Strauss.
GLENN DALE ‘POPSY’ CLAYBOURN, JR.
A memorial service for Glenn Dale ‘Popsy’ Claybourn, Jr., 87, of League City, Tx. will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 30, 2011 at Clear Creek Community Church in League City, Tx.
Glenn Dale “Popsy” or “Bubba” Claybourn, Jr. was born on Oct. 11, 1923 in Dallas, Tx. to Glenn Dale and Clara Claybourn. He passed away June 23, 2011, in League City.
Glenn’s family moved to Palacios, Texas in 1933 where he went through school. He was drafted in to the U.S. Army January 27, 1943. Glenn was inducted at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, and was transferred to Camp Joseph T. Robinson in Little Rock, Arkansas for basic training. In June of 1943, he was transferred to Camp Fannin in Tyler, Texas, where he served in the motor pool. While at Camp Fannin, he met, fell in love with, and married
Gladys Davidson on April 30, 1944. He served in World War II in the 2nd Armored Division 41st Armored Infantry, Company F. He was wounded in the arm on October 6, 1944 in Aachen, Germany and spent the remainder of his tour in El Paso, Texas until his discharge in September of 1945. He was a recipient of the Purple Heart.
Glenn worked for Houston Natural Gas in Palacios for many years. Throughout his career he was transferred to Beeville, Dickinson, Silsbee, Victoria, Clear Lake City and then circled back to Victoria, Texas where he went to work for Houston Pipe Line. He retired from Houston Pipe Line in 1984, and moved to their retirement home in Wimberley, Texas. More recently they moved to Kemah, Texas to be closer to their family. Glenn most recently attended Clear Creek Community Church in League City, Texas.
He is survived by his daughter, Jan Alexander and son in law, Richard Alexander of Dickinson, Texas; grandchildren: Samy Mears and husband Aaron of Dickinson, Texas, Dona Rowe and husband Corey of Pearland, Texas; great grandchildren: Reagan and Alexander Mears, and Gracelynn Rowe; Special family friend & neighbor: Christie Johnson of Wimberley, Texas.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Gladys; and his parents Glenn Dale and Clara Claybourn, and his sister, Irene “Buffy” Buffaloe, and brother in law Glenn Buffaloe.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in memory of Glenn to Clear Creek Community Church at 999 Egret Bay Blvd. North, League City, Texas 77573.
JERRY HAYNES
Funeral services for Jerry Haynes, 64, of Kingsville, Tx. were held on July 16, 2011 at the Kingsville Memorial Funeral Home Chapel.
Jerry was born November 10, 1946 in Palacios, Texas to Benno Haynes and Etta Mae Haynes and passed away July 11, 2011.
He leaves to cherish his memories his loving wife of 9 years, Dorothy Haynes of Kingsville; three daughters: Jerrylin (Chris) of Palacios, Andrea (JR) of Bishop, and Darlene of Dallas; nine sons: Jerry (Amy) of Austin, Amos (Shirly) of Palacios, Avery of San Antonio, Lester (Lisa) of Dallas, John of Dallas, Ray Dale of Kingsville and Ricky (Regina) of Dallas, four brothers: Casper Haynes of Pearland, Robert Haynes also of Pearland, Earnest (Doris) of Houston, Walter (Josie) of Amarillo; two sisters, Helen Haynes of Palacios and Lerlene of Landcastle, California.
Other survivors include twentyfive grandkids, fourteen great-grandkids a host of nieces, nephews, uncles, aunts, cousins and friends.
ELNA LOUISE HARVEY
Funeral services for Elna Harvey, 73, of Palacios were held July 8, 2011 at the Palacios cemetery with Rev. Don Storey officiating.
She is survived by her children Kaye, Jean, Dan, Charles, John and Tim; sisters Juanita and Wanda; brothers John and Charles; 11 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.
She passed away July 4, 2011. She was born August 28, 1937 in Denver, CO.
Pallbearers were Donnie Harvey, Chris Harvey, Paul Kubecka, Allen White, Billy Christmas and Paul Maslack.
JAMES VERNON TOWNSEND
Graveside services for James Vernon Townsend, 86, were held on July 13, 2011 at the Houston National Cemetary in Houston, Tx.
James was born on Jan. 27, 1925 in Zavalla, Tx. and passed away on July 8, 2011 in Palacios.
He served his country in the Navy during WWII and worked on the U.S.S. Cubera.
James is survived by his wife of 39 years, Lucy Townsend; daughter, Terri L. Sones and husband Mike. V. Sones; sister, Robby Nell Evans of Norman, OK; grandchildren, James V. Townsend, Daniel L. Townsend and wife Erin Townsend, Pace Townsend, Morgan Townsend, Lauren Townsend, Jason N. White, Joshua S. White and wife Evelyn; and many great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and sons, James E. Townsend and Jack H. Townsend.
