LaVERNE JENNINGS-BYARS
LaVerne Jennings-Byars, 93, passed away April 1, 2011 at her home in New Caney, Tx. with her family by her side following a stroke
She was born April 11, 1917, in Pearl, Tx. to Johnny Dumas and wife Zelma Fowler-Dumas.
Mrs. Byars spent much of her time outdoors with her plants and flowers.Her interests included family, pets, gardening, sewing and reading.
She is survived by a brother, Johnny Dumas and wife Virginia, sister-in-law Margaret Dumas; sons Willard Jennings and wife Tina, and Chuck Jennings; daughters Peggy Barker and husband Bobby, and Karen Walleck; son-in-law John Jones; several nieces, nephews, many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; and also by many friends including Millie Hartman of Palacios.
She was preceded in death by brothers, Ed Dumas and Dalton Dumas; sister Cleda Lewis; and daughter Sherry Jones.
SOPHIA HILDA LEMONS HUNTER
Funeral services for Sophia Hilda Lemons Hunter, 82, were held April 4, 2011 at the First Baptist Church in Palacios, Tx. with Rev. Hollas Hoffman and James Collins officiating. Graveside services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday, April 5, 2011 at High Valley cemetery in Bend, Tx.
Mrs. Hunter was born Sept. 23, 1932 in Pampa, Tx. to Tollie Stone Lemons and Clyda Nelda Wooster Lemons. She departed this life on April 1, 2011 in Victoria, Tx.
She married
Staton Edward Hunter on June 29, 1945 in San Saba, TX.
She is survived by her son Gary Hunter and wife Mary of Palacios; granddaughter Sandra Hunter Lesley and husband Jack of Richmond, Tx.; great-grandson Brint Lesley of Richmond; granddaughter Garrie Jean Grace and husband Ryan; great-granddaughter Madison Leann Grace all of Taylor, Tx.; sisters-in-law Malissa Lemons of Bend, Louise Lemons of Lometa, Tx. and Sammye Lemons of Evant, Tx.; brother-in-law Jack Danials of Bend; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, brothers Robert Lemons, T. S. Lemons, Jr., David Lemons, Jerry Lemons and Buddy Lemons, and sisters Margaret Sisk, Nelda Taylor and Joann Danials.
Pallbearers are Gene Brister, Butch Bevers, Carrell Ramsey, Rodney Girndt, Wayne Biffle and Dan Tucker.
Memorials may be made to the First Bapitst Church in Palacios, Pet-Pals in Palacios or the Beeville Children’s Home in Beeville, Tx.

MOZELLE S. PHILLIPS
Funeral services for Mozelle S. Phillips, 93, were held March 16, 2011 at the Alamo Heights Baptist Church in Port Lavaca, Tx. with Rev. Tim Williams officiating. Burial was at Palacios cemetery in Palacios, Tx.
Mrs. Phillips born in Little Rock, Arkansas on Oct. 30, 1917. She passed on to be with our Lord and Savior on March 13, 2011 in Boerne, Tx. with her children by her side.
Mozelle was a retired nurse having worked in Dr. E.B. Sanford’s Medical Clinic in Palacios for 38 years. She served in many capacities in church and community.
She will be missed by her family and all who knew her, but we take comfort in knowing she is with God.
She is survived by daughters Betty Reeves of Katy, Lela Barnhart of Batson, and Mary Domstead and husband Gary of Boerne; son Pat Phillips of Uvalde; stepson Ira Phillips; daughter-in-law Laura Phillips Lawson; grandchildren Wallace Phillips, Cheryl Robinson, Tammy Bissett, Robert Reeves, Philip Reeves, Donna Barnhart, Gary Barnhart, Randy Barnhart, Kim Tinnin, Greg Domstead, Doug Phillips and Matt Phillips; 21 great-grandchildren; and 8 great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by husbands Wallace S. Phillips and Rush Phillips; son Wallace S. Phillips, Jr.; stepsons Earl Phillips and Gene Phillips, her parents, Lefell and Susan Jane Schnell; sisters Fannie Thorn and Irene Ashmore; and step-brother Malcolm Davis.
VERONICA ‘VICKI’ SMITH
Funeral services for Veronica “Vicki” Smith, 59, of Bay City, Tx., were held March 19, 2011 at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Bay City.
Mrs. Smith was born on Sept. 19, 1951 in Raymondville, Tx. to the late Guy and Catherine Baird. She went to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on March 16, 2011 surrounded by family and friends at her home.
Vicki graduated from Palacios High School in 1969. She was a dedicated employee for the United States Postal Service for 31 years. Vicki was a devout Christian, mother, grandmother, and friend who was faithful to God, and all those she loved.
She is survived by daughters Melanie Bock and husband Allan, of Van Vleck, Tx., Ginger Beyer and husband Richard, of Markham, Tx., and Misty Bryant and husband Derick of Wadsworth, Tx .; son Charles Smith, of Austin, Tx.; grandchildren Teran Casey, Madison Simons, Tanner Casey, Emma Beyer and Kella Beyer; brothers Guy Baird and wife Becki, Larry Baird and wife Beth, and Bill Quinn and wife Donna.
She was preceded in death by her parents Guy Baird and Catherine Quinn and brother, Douglas Baird.
A Scholarship Memorial fund has been set up at Prosperity Bank in Vicki Smith’s name to honor and bless the charities she loved and cherished.
JEAN ELIZABETH WIESEPAPE
A memorial service for Jean Elizabeth Wiesepape, 84, of Palacios, Tx., were held March 10, 2011 at Palacios Funeral Home. Interment will be at 1 p.m. March 17 at Fort Sam Houston cemetery in San Antonio.
The family will received friends and relatives from 5-7 p.m. Thursday, March 10 at Palacios Funeral Home.
Mrs. Wiesepape was born April 1, 1926 in Abilene, Tx. to the late Louis J. Jones, Jr. and Alice Elizabeth Atkinson Jones. She passed away March 6, 2011.
She was a member of the Church of Christ and retired from Cullen Frost Bank in San Antonio after 21 years of service.
Survivors include daughter and son-in-law Linda and Shan Jackson of Palacios; brother Louis J. Jones III and wife Diana of Rockport; and grandsons Robert J. Mahoney II of Houston and Christopher B. Mahoney of Palacios.
She was preceded in death by her husband Harry J. Wiesepape and grandson Andrew L. Mahoney.
Memorials may be made in her memory to the Port Lavaca Church of Christ.

FRANK MORALES
A rosary for Frank Morales, 78, of Palacios, Tx., will be recited at 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 9, 2011 at the Palacios Funeral Home. Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, March 10 at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church with Father Bryan Heyer officiating.
Interment will follow at Palacios cemetery.
Mr. Morales was born March 9, 1932 in Palacios to the late Juan Morales and Mercedes Alvarez Morales. He passed away March 6, 2011.
He is survived by his sister and brother-in-law Angie and Santos Carrillo of Palacios; brother Marcello Morales of Palacios; and a number of nieces and nephews.

WALTER P. CHRISTY
Memorial services for Walter P. Christy, 96, of Bandera, Tx., were held March 5, 2011 at Mt. Vernon Baptist Church in West Monroe, LA. Interment was at Mt. Vernon cemetery.
Mr. Christy was born in Lafayette, LA on Sept. 22, 1914 to John Henry Christy and Edna Griffin Christy. He passed away March 1, 2011 in San Antonio, TX.
He lived at the Flying L Ranch in Bandera, TX for the past 15 years.
Mr. Christy attended Georgia Tech and was a member of Delta Tau Delta fraternity and a life member of the Order of Elks. He built pipelines all over the world while employed by Pipe Tech. He retired in 1978.
He is survived by his daughters, Patricia and husband Dennis Rodriguez of Valley Glen, CA and Nona Staples and husband JC of Windcrest, TX; granddaughters Nona Acosta (Anthony), Christy Futernick (Marc), and Alexis Smith (Paul) and six great-grandchildren, all of CA. In Louisiana, he leaves two sisters, Marion Gilley ( Freddie) and Carolyn Tolbird, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. He also leaves his close friend Grady Newton in Bandera, TX.
He was a wonderful father, brother, uncle, and friend who will always be missed. We feel blessed to have had him with us for so many years.
MARY MARGARET RICHARD
Funeral services for Mary Margaret Richard, 80, of Point Comfort, Tx., were held Feb. 22, 2011 at Six Mile Assembly of God with the Rev. Johnny Kisiah officiating. Interment was at Leakey cemetery in Leakey, Tx.
Mrs. Richard was born on Feb. 27, 1930 in Coolidge, Ariz. She went to be with her Lord on Feb. 18, 2011.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Lawrence C. and Ella Lee Kelly; husband Thomas Stanton Richard; and son Michael Stanley Richard.
She is survived by her son, Robert Victor Richard; sisters Betty Burch of Zavalla and Nancy Myers of Palacios, Tx.; brothers Lawrence C. Kelly, Roy Kelly, and Donald Kelly of Palacios; and grandsons Robert and Michael Richard of Portland, Oregon.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Lawrence C. and Ella Lee Kelly; husband Thomas Stanton Richard; and son Michael Stanley Richard.
