JOE A. ‘PaPa Joe’ KALAS
A Funeral Mass for Joe A. “PaPa Joe” Kalas, 79, of Palacios, was scheduled for 10 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 14 at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church with Rev. Charles Dwomoh officiating. Interment was at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Blessing.
Mr. Kalas was born Nov. 13, 1919 in Hungerford, Tx. to the late Vaclav and Filemina Maresh Kalas. He died Sept. 12, 1999 at Gulf Coast Medical Center in Wharton.
Papa Joe was a member of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus Council #6889, and the K.J.T. He was also the former owner/operator of Joe’s Grocery and a resident of Palacios since 1957.
He is survived by his wife, Mildred Hlavaty Kalas of Palacios; daughter and son-in-law, Rita and Kenneth Gold of El Campo; son and daughter-in-law Joseph and Sherry Kalas of Bay City; and six grandchildren—Joseph John Kalas of Austin, Jennifer Kalas of San Antonio, and Brian, Michelle, Kristi and Kara Gold all of El Campo.
Pallbearers are Pete Kocurek, Ed Mondrik, Louis Buentello, Victor Perez, M. R. Rodriguez and Lalo Flores.
LARRY KNIGHT
Memorial services for Larry Knight, 75, of Palacios, TX, were held on August 29, 2013. Larry was born in Indianapolis, Indiana on May 17, 1938 to the late Melvin and Margaret Baze Knight and passed away on August 23, 2013.
Larry was a graduate of Indiana Law Enforcement Academy. He served as a Police Officer for 40 years. He was Marshal of Crows Nest, Indiana, a Truant officer for Channelview ISD, Chief of Police for the San Jacinto College System and Deputy for Jackson County. He was a member of the Lions Club of Palacios, Blue Knights Motorcycle Club and attended Carancahua Chapel.
Larry is survived by his wife, Judy Wildman Knight; daughter, Lydia (James) Manni and their children, Sophia and Leo; Mary Ann Biggs and her son, Johnny; son, Cliff (Tali) Wildman and their daughter, Dahlia.
Arrangements entrusted to the care of Grace Funeral Chapel in Port Lavaca.
LARRY PEREZ
Larry Perez was born on Dec. 1, 1964 in Palacios, TX. He passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on Saturday, Aug. 24, 2013 at the age of 48 in Austin, TX.
Larry was a 1983 graduate of Palacios High School and attended St. Edwards University in Austin. Larry was especially proud of his 13-year career as a legal document specialist for Norton, Rose, Fulbright of Austin. He was an avid tennis player and life long fan of the sport. He loved the cinema and came to be known among his friends as the go to critic of all films. Larry's wit was legendary as was his ability to discover fine dining.
He is survived by his mother Connie Flores Cantu of San Antonio, TX; brothers George Michael Cantu of San Antonio, and Eric and wife Emelda Cantu; nieces Marissa, Lianna and nephew Eric Cristian all of Corpus Christi, TX; aunt and uncle Raul and Carolyn Villarreal of Palacios; cousins Tyson, Desiree and Ava Schmidt of Missouri City, TX. Dustin Villarreal of Austin and Karl and Debbie Koegle and family of San Antonio.
He was preceded in death by his father Ismael Perez of Bay City, TX and his loving grandparents Bernard and Janie Aparicio of Palacios.
The family would like to thank the medical staff at Seton Medical Group, Hospice Austin's Christopher House, all his Norton, Rose, Fulbright family and all his loving friends. Special thanks to Roman Rosas, Jason Sick and Dean Robinson for assisting Larry during his illness.
A memorial and celebration of life of Larry is being organized by his family and friends.
CAROLINE SUE NELSEN
Funeral service for Caroline Sue Nelsen (nee Schoren), 76, formerly of Cleveland, Ohio, were held Aug. 7, 2013 at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, 1004 Magnusson, in Palacios, Texas.
Surrounded by family, she peacefully passed away Aug. 5, 2013 in Palacios.
She was the beloved wife of Gil; cherished mother of Joanne Brown (Rodney), James White (Barbara), Linda Czerwieniec (Kenneth), Dolores Key, Karen Nelsen and Carol Longoria (Gerald); devoted grandmother of Rebekah (Rastislav), Jessica Marie, Maria, Jennifer, Jessica, Justin, Bryson, Elisa and Nicolaas; great-grandmother of Juliana, Dane and Nathaniel; and loving aunt to many.
She was preceded in death by parents Howard and Edith, and brother Howard, Jr.

JOSEPH AMABROSE RESSLER
Graveside services for Joseph Amabrose Ressler, 93. of Dripping Springs, TX were held Aug. 8, 2013 at Palacios cemetery.
Mr. Ressler was born June 16, 1920 in Palacios, TX to the late Ira A. Ressler and Hazel Scott Ressler. died at his home on on Aug. 3, 2013.
Joe served in the Pacific on a Navy supply ship during World War II, an experience that provided him with tales that lasted a lifetime. Joe worked as a carpenter building houses with his father and brother, and in the shrimping industry, but his favorite work was as a ranch foreman in Mississippi.
Joe was active in his communities, serving as a deacon in multiple churches and as a school board member. He moved to the Van Horn, TX area after retiring where he kept a herd of goats and an assortment of horses, ponies and donkeys. Joe and his wife Jean created many happy memories for their grandsons and great nieces and nephews on that ranch in Van Horn.
Survivors include his daughter Robin R. Grace and husband Roger; and grandsons Patrick J. Hass, Adam H. Haas and Kerry J. Ressler, Jr.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Katherine Jean Dodd Ressler; brothers John and James Ressler; sister Margaret Gaines; sons Kerry J. and Dennes E. Ressler; and daughter Janies L. Ressler.
Arrangements were with Palacios Funeral Home.
MARGARET JUSTINE HERMIS CORPORON
Funeral services for Margaret Justine Hermis Corporon, 90, of Collegeport, Tx. were held July 25, 2013 at Taylor Bros. Funeral Home in Bay City, TX with Andy and Janell Blair officiating. Interment was at Hawley cemetery.
Margaret was born June 15, 1923 to Joe and Rosalie Hermis. She passed away July 22, 2013.
She married
Chester Miles Corporon, Aug. 6, 1947. All her life she was totally devoted to God and to her family, her friends, neighbors and community. Some of her hobbies were fishing, hunting, gardening, and reading her Bible every evening before she lay down to sleep.
Margaret is survived by her husband, Chester Corporon of Collegeport; sons, Charles Corporon of Bay City, Tommy Corporon of Collegeport, Carl Corporon and wife Kathy of El Campo, TX, and Victor Corporon and wife Barbara of Collegeport; daughter Linda O’Rourke of Austin, TX; numerous grandchildren; three great grandchildren; and family and friends.
A special thanks to Hospice Austin and Parmer Woods Retirement Community for their compassion, care and commitment to Margaret’s health and well being.

VELMA EDITH SALSGIVER
Velma Edith Salsgiver, 92, of Palacios, TX was the honored guest at her homecoming celebration July 21, 2013 when she arrived home to heaven. There to welcome her upon her arrival were Lord Jesus Christ, her husband, parents and ten brothers and sisters.
Mrs. Salsgiver was born Aug. 31, 1920 in Cypress, TX to Emile and Lula Rowold. She married
Yale L. Salsgiver on June 10, 1938.
She is survived by her son, Yale “Lloyd” Salsgiver of Palacios; daughter, Susan (Shelly) Alley of Cypress; son, Paul Salsgiver (Janet) of Magnolia, TX; four grandchildren, Michael (Kay) Alley, Corissa (Anthony) Morgan, Chad (Liz) Alley, Dawna (Steven) Miller, and Paul (Shelley) Salsgiver II; and eight great-grandchildren, Ashley, April, Steven, Tony, Maggie, Ian, Addison and Aubrey.
Velma was a long time resident of Houston where she lived, raised her family and dedicated her time to helping others through her volunteer work at West End Baptist Church. Her retirement years took her to Palacios were she enjoyed the water, volunteering at First Baptist Church Palacios and visits with family and friends. She graduated from John H. Reagan in 1937.
A Celebration of Life Memorial service will be hosted by West End Baptist Church located at 802 Shepherd Dr. Houston, TX at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 3, 2013.
MARY EVELYN NEELEY
Graveside services for Mary Evelyn Neeley, 80, of Jourdanton, TX were held July 11, 2013 at Hawley cemetery with Brother Shan Jackson officiating.
Mrs. Neeley was born Jan. 31, 1933 in Bay City, TX to the late J. E. Wyatt and Lora Irene Miller Wyatt. She passed away July 8, 2013.
Survivors include her husband Robert M. Neeley of Pleasanton, TX; daughters Sandra L. Neeley and Stacy L. Neeley both of Pleasanton, TX; sons David E. Neeley & wife Darlene of College Station and Randy W. Neeley of Pleasanton; sister Margie Huffman & husband Joe Dan of Richmond, TX; grandchildren Timothy Earl Neeley, David Brent Neeley, Ray Rivas, Michael Ray Neeley and Derrick Neeley.

A Funeral Mass for Luat Nguyen, 80, of Palacios, TX was held July 6, 2013 at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Palacios. Interment was at Palacios cemetery.
Mr. Nguyen was born Sept. 15, 1932 in Vietnam to the late Van Nghi and Huyen Thi Nguyen. He passed away June 26, 2013 in Victoria, TX.
Luat was a long time resident of Palacios. He was a shrimper and a member of the Catholic Church.
He is survived by his wife Thi Truc Nguyen; 5 daughters – Lien, Ngan, Oanh, Oanh, & Minh Nguyen; 4 sons – Tuyen, Lap, Thong, & Tuan Nguyen; 2 sisters – Dang & Anh Nguyen; 3 brothers – Khen, Hon, & Diem Nguyen; 37 grandchildren; and 11 great grandchildren.
