THOMAS JACKSON MORTON
A memorial service for Thomas Jackson Morton, 61, of Palacios, Tx., was held Sept. 17, 2010 at the First Presbyterian Church in Palacios with Revs. Andy and Janell Blair officitiating.
Mr. Morton was born Nov. 27, 1948 in Greenville, S.C. to Charles W. and Edna Waters Morton. He passed away Sept. 11, 2010 at Veteran’s Administration Medical Center in Houston after a brief illness related to injuries sustained in service of his country.
Jack was a Vietnam veteran and was loved by all who knew him.
He is survived by his wife, Carol L. Morton; children Daniel Jeremy Morton and Mynda Danielle Morton; grandchildren Nicholas Adam Martin and Damian Jackson Morton; brother Charles Morton; sisters Josephine Morton McClain and Marie Morton Ridenour; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
Memorials may be made to the Robert Duran Food Pantry or Martha’s Table.
ROSA LINDA RODRIGUEZ BAY
A Funeral Mass for Rosa Linda Rodriguez Bay, 57, of Palacios, Tx., was Sept. 17, 2010 at St. Anthony de Padua Catholic Church in Palacios with Father Bryan Heyer officiating. Interment was at Palacios cemetery.
She was born June 8, 1953, in Palacios to John H. and Mary M. Rodriguez of Palacios. She passed away Sept. 12, 2010.
She was a homemaker and a member of St. Anthony de Padua Catholic Church.
She is survived by her parents; son Robert “Robby” Tanner Jr. of Palacios; sisters Lucy Groves of Houston, Sylvia Dick of San Antonio, Norma Galvez of Bay City, Diana McRae of Midland, and Liz Hintz and Pat Rodriguez both of Houston; brothers Johnny Rodriguez III of Palacios and Robert Hernandez of Houston; and grandchild Lakoda Tanner of West Virginia.
Pallbearers were Joseph Villarreal, Tony Galvez, Eric Galvez, Johnny Rodriguez, Brandon Rodriguez, and Gabriel Serretiz.
Arrangements were with Artero Memorial Chapels, Port Lavaca, 361-552-2300.
HOMER McCLARY
Graveside services for Homer McClary, 81, of Austin, Tx., were held Sept. 11, 2010 at Liberty Hill cemetery in Liberty, Tx., with his son-in-law James D. Taylor officiating.
Mr. McClary was born May 20, 1929 in Kennedy, Tx. He died Sept. 2, 2010, in Austin.
The McClary family moved to Palacios, Tx. in 1931 where Homer grew up and graduated high school. He joined the National Guard there before enlisting in the Army on Aug., 31, 1949. Promoted to the rank of Sgt., Homer was honorably discharged on March 7, 1953. While stationed in Maryland, Homer met and married
Rosemarie Krell on Sept. 1, 1951. After discharge they moved back to Palacios where they had a son, John L., and a daughter, Bonnie Jean, before moving to Victoria in 1969.
Homer worked for Alcoa Aluminum Company in Point Comfort, Tx. for 43 years before retiring and moving to Rockaway Beach, MO. After a few years in Missouri, the McClary’s moved to Austin to be near their children and grandsons. Homer was active in the United Methodist Church and choir, Boy Scouts, and the Lions Club while in Palacios. He also was a Red Cross volunteer and Alderman for two years in Rockaway Beach, MO.
He is survived by his wife, Rosemarie; son John L. and hwife Nancy; and grandsons Wyatt and Mason
He was preceded in death by his brother Ray; sister Grace; and daughter Bonnie.
His family and friends will miss him greatly.
Pallbearers will be Wyatt and Mason Taylor, Lee Johnson, Josh Melle, Dudley Lightsey, and Jeremy Jesmer.
The family wishes to thank his doctors, the staff at St. David’s Hospital in Round Rock and especially the Lighthouse Hospice in Austin. The family also asks that in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Lighthouse Hospice.
HOWARD ALVIN TANNER
A Memorial Service for Howard Alvin Tanner, 88, of Francitas, Tx., was held Sept. 10, 2010, at First Presbyterian Church in Palacios, Tx.
Mr. Tanner was born Oct. 1, 1921 in Palacios. He passed away Sept. 8, 2010 in Ganado, Tx.
He had been an armed guard on a Merchant Marine ship during WWII, U.S. Navy, and he was a rancher. He was a member of Jackson County Fair Board, Jackson County Parks Board, Jackson County Wide Drainage Board, and First Presbyterian Church of Palacios. He was a supporter of the Matagorda County Fair, Palacios FFA, Palacios 4-H, Jackson County 4-H, and Youth Auction.
He is survived by his daughters Phylis Olsovsky, Melvena Rabichaux and husband Allie, and Shawn Tanner; granddaughters Terri Lynn, Kate and Kala; grandsons Kyle and Mark; great-granddaughters Bryanna and Morgan; great-grandsons Ozzy, Mason and Slade; a special friend Joyce Green.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 47 years, Evy Estelle Myers; parents Joseph Elmer Tanner and Ethel Agnes Culbertson; sisters Icy Vera Schram and Frances Hellen Tanner; and brothers Carl Andrew Tanner and Joseph Emery Tanner.

JOHNIE CECIL SNIDER
Funeral services for Johnie Cecil Snider, 81, of Alvin, Tx., were held Sept. 7, 2010 at the Jeter Memorial Funeral Home Chapel in Friendswood, Tx. with Rev. John Putch and Rev. Shawn Nichols officiating. Burial was at Confederate cemetery in Alvin.
Mr. Snider was born April 21, 1929 in Palacios, Tx. to the late John W. and Carrie J. Snider. He passed away Sept. 3, 2010 in Houston, Tx.
He is survived by his wife of almost 59 years as of Sept. 22, Shirley Faye Snider; daughters Sherry Jane Robertson and husband Forrest A. of Hallettsville, Tx., Nita Faye Bohannon and husband Darrell of Virginia Beach, Virginia, and Evelyn Anne Jones and husband Jerry of Eden, North Carolina; sons Johnie Wayne Snider and wife Karen of Fayetteville, Georgia, and James Lee Snider and wife Trayce R. of Alvin; sister Evelyn Collins and husband Ray of Port Lavaca, Tx.; 13 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and numerous friends and relatives.
Pallbearers included DeWayne Collins, James Hebel, Gary Hebel, Jamie Hebel, Jordan Hall and Bryan Tatum.

THOMAS EDWARD DAY
A Memorial Service for Thomas (Tommy) Edward Day, 56, of the Deutschburg Community, Tx., was held Sept 2, 2010 at the First Baptist Church in Blessing with Mrs. Joyce Morton officiating.
Mr. Day born on July 14, 1954 to Fred E. Day and Elizabeth Fern Morton Day. He entered into eternal rest with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on Aug. 24, 2010.
Tommy was a quiet, non-assuming man who got along well with everyone. Before his retirement, Tommy worked in the rice fields for Charlie Johnson and later for Charlie’s son, Galen Johnson.
He is survived by his mother, Elizabeth Fern Morton Day; brothers Richard Earl Day and wife Camilla of Antler, Oklahoma, and Walter William Day of Palacios, Tx.; sister Geneva Irene Socha of Ganado, Tx.; uncle Henry Richard Day of Blessing; nieces Kathy Socha of Ganado and Neva Pitman of Lena, Arkansas; cousins Teresa Blackwell and James Morton of Palacios, Braxton Morton of Willis, Tx., Nickey Jones of Van Vleck, Tx. and Sandra Di Giovanni of Sugar Land, Tx.
He was preceded in death by his father, Fred E. Day.
GUY RAYMOND CLAYBOURN, JR.
A Memorial Service for Guy Raymond Claybourn, Jr., 89, of Palacios, Tx., was held Aug. 28, 2010 at the First Presbyterian Church in Palacios with Revs. Andy and Janell Blair officiating. Graveside service followed at Hawley cemetery near Blessing.
Mr. Claybourn was born May 13, 1921 in Palacios to the late Guy R., Sr. and Blanche Louise Kirkwold Claybourn. He passed away at home Aug. 22, 2010.
He graduated in 1937 from Palacios High School. In 1939 he attempted to enlist in the U. S. Army Air Corps but quotas were full. He worked as a carpenter’s helper on construction at Camp Hulen, the camp being converted into an anti-aircraft training center.
In December 1940 Guy traveled to Burbank, California, where he learned sheet metal work and began at Lockheed Aircraft working on the Lockheed YP-38 airplane, being promoted to Leadman on the Fuselage/Center Section. He bought a bicycle instead of a car and used funds for flying lessons, beginning in August 1941. On Dec. 7 1941 he was making the pilot-license required solo cross-country flight; upon return to home base he was informed of the attack on Pearl Harbor. Thereafter all non-airline civil flying was grounded within 150 miles of the coast.
In May 1942 he applied for the Civilian Pilot Training Program as an enlisted reservist, and was sworn in as a private at Fort Sill, OK on Oct. 17, 1942. In January 1943 he reported to Waco Army Flying School for Liaison Pilot Rating check ride and was promoted to Staff Sargeant. In May 1943 he joined the 935 Field Artillery Battalion as a Liaison Pilot and remained with that group until September 1945. The Battalion served in North Africa, Italy, France and Germany. On June 23, 1944 he received a battlefield commission as a Second Lieutenant in the Field Artillery.
After remaining in Germany until March 1946, he was released to reserve status and began the “G. I.” Bill study at the University of Houston, graduating with a Bachelor’s Degree. In July 1951 he was recalled to active duty and joined the 999 Armored Field Artillery Battalion with the Eighth U. S. Army. He arrived in Korea in February 1952, joining the 204th Signal Battalion Aviation Section as a courier pilot until April 1953. Thereafter he served at Fort Monroe, Virginia, where he was promoted to Captain. His service included duties at Richards-Gebaur Air Force Base in Missouri, Tinker Air Force Base in Oklahoma, and Fort Belvoir, Virginia. He was promoted to Major and served in Vietnam as a liaison and courier pilot, thereafter being assigned to Fort Wolters, Tx. He retired from USAPHS Fourth U. S. Army as a Lieutenant Colonel in March of 1968.
At his death, he may have been the only surviving veteran of three wars in Matagorda County.
Guy was a Charter Member of the Army Aviation Association, the U. S. Army Association, the P-38 Association, the Washington Artillery Veterans Association, National Museum of the United States Army, and the Cecil Lee American Legion Post 649. He was a railroad ‘buff’ and enjoyed railroading around the country, being members of railroad associations and the Lone Star Region National Model Railroad Association. He was a founding board member of the Palacios Area Historical Association, serving terms as Secretary, and thereafter as a many-talented volunteer. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Palacios, and served as Greeter. He was a member of the Matagorda County Historical Commission and the County Museum.
He is survived by his wife, Colleen T. Claybourn, of Palacios; children Clayton Alan Claybourn and wife Holly of Palacios, Carolyn Guilaine Goforth of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Sharon P. Burnham of Bastrop, Tx., Sarah L. Penland of Dale, Tx., and Rhoda P. Hart and husband Eddie of Cedar Creek, Tx.; 14 grandchildren; sister Joann C. Dyson of LaSalle, Tx.; brother Jon N. Claybourn of Bay City, Tx; and numerous nephews, nieces and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Marshall Claybourn and James Claybourn; and sisters Marian Curran and Lura Nell Anders.
