JOYCE WOODLAND FALKS
Funeral services for Joyce Woodland Falks, 77, of Port Lavaca, Tx., were held July 1, 2010 at the First Baptist Church in Palacios, Tx. with Rev. James Amerson officiating. Interment was at Memory Gardens in Edna, Tx.
Mrs. Falks was born Jan. 6, 1933 in Edna to the late Hiram Samuel and Lyndale Hensley Woodland. She passed away June 27, 2010.
She was a member of the Eastern Star. Joyce had a unique way with people and made friends wherever she went and always had a smile for everyone.
She is survived by sons Laval Dee Falks and wife Marcia of Mt. Juliet, Tennessee, and Russell Lynn Falks of Corpus Christi; brother Frederick Woodland and wife Cathy of Port Lavaca; and grandchildren Leon Laval Falks and Dee Ann King.
She was preceded in death by sons Ed N. Falks III and Samuel Wayne Falks.
Pallbearers were Dee Falks, Leon Falks, Rusty Woodland, Shea Watts, Hensley Weaver and Sammy Davidson.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to the staff at Detar Hospital, Trinity Shores Assisted Living in Port Lavaca, Twin Pines in Victoria and to Dr. Rakesh Kathpalia for the love and care given to Joyce.

VERNON A. BATES
Funeral services for Vernon A. Bates, Sr., 81, of Palacios, Tx., were held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 30, 2010 at the First Baptist Church in Palacios with Rev. Zach Nicholson officiating. Interment was at Palacios cemetery.
Mr. Bates was born Feb. 1, 1929 in Bayou La Batre, Alabama to the late Fred F. and Mary Kryger Bates. He passed away June 27, 2010.
His family returned to Texas in 1931 where Vernon Attended school in Palacios. He served in the Korean Conflict from 1952 to 1953. Upon his return he became a shrimper on his first boat The Cecile. In 1950 he married
Faye Chamblee. Vernon was a 50 year member of the Palacios Masonic Lodge where he served as Master for two years.
Survivors include his wife Faye Bates of Palacios; sons Vernon Bates, Jr. & wife Kathy of Corpus Christi and Mark Bates & wife Rhonda of Palacios; grandchildren Keith Bates, Brandi Stingfellow & husband Lance, Matthew Bates & wife Vanessa, Eric Bates and great grandson Jackson Bates.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Maxine Perkins.
Pallbearers were Jimmy Milam, Ricky Milam, Ted Bates, Jr., Ted Perkins, Charles Eikenberg, Leo Naiser, Bryan Fields & Bobby Kunefke. Those serving as honorary pallbearers included Alton Smith, David Smith and Laddie Matusek.

TERESA GONZALES
Funeral services for Teresa Gonzales, 89, of Palacios, Tx., were held June 27, 2010 at the First Presbyterian Church of Palacios with Pastor Andy Blair officiating. Interment was at Palacios cemetery.
Mrs. Gonzales was born March 22, 1921 in Mexico to the late Pilar Sanchez Garcia and Reyes Garcia, Sr. She passed away June 24, 2010.
She was a homemaker and a Presybterian.
She is survived by daughters Esther De La Rosa of Bay City, Tx. and Elizabeth Sanchez and Emily Garcia of Palacios; son Ernest Gonzales of Ducktown, Tennessee; 11 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and wonderfuld friend and caregiver Pila Pena.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Ralph Gonzales; sisters Lydia Quintanilla, Vidala Soto and Rosaura Flores; brothers Reyes Garcia Jr., Alfredo Garcia and Manuel Garcia; and granddaughter Iris Renee Gonzales.
Pallbearers were Andrew Sanchez Jr., Adrian Longoria, Marcus Sanchez, Jasper Garcia Jr., Jose Zuniga III and Zachary Smith. Honorary pallbearers were Ricardo Garcia, Louis Martino Jr. and Abelardo Flores Jr.
Arrangements were with Artero Memorial Chapels of Port Lavaca.
OLGA MARIE STEFFEK
A Funeral Mass for Olga Marie Steffek, 64 of Blessing, Tx., was held June 15, 2010 at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Blessing
Mrs. Steffek was born on July 21, 1945 in Weimer, Tx. to Frank Kunschick and Elsie Denham. She lost her courageous battle with cancer on June 4, 2010.
She is survived by her husband of 43 years, Milton Steffek; mother, Elsie Janca of El Campo; children Sharon Barker of Wharton, Mark Steffek of Brazoria, Pamela Mata and husband Adam of Wharton, Michael Steffek of Blessing and Denise Rodriguez and husband Brian of Boling; brother Joe Janca and wife Rhonda of Louise; sisters Agnes Wagner of Wharton and Irene Sewell of El Campo; 19 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her father Frank Kunschick, sister Lucille Kunschick and mother-in-law Victoria Steffek.

DOUGLAS LYNN McMULLEN
Douglas Lynn McMullen, 69 of Bastrop County, Tx. died June 6, 2010 unexpectedly of heart failure.
He was born July 30, 1940 in Red Rock, Texas, the son of the late James Odell and Eloise Riddle McMullen. He was the older of 2 siblings and is survived by his sister, Marsha Fimbel of Victoria, Tx.
He is also survived by his wife, Margie Maraggia McMullen of Yoakum, Tx.; ex-wife Debra Hathaway of Boerne, Tx.; daughters, Cheryl McMullen, and Hedy Carter and husband Perry, both of Yoakum, Tx. and Audrey Franz and husband Mickey of Seguin Tx. Doug left a lasting legacy with seven doting grandchildren: Douglas Taylor McMullen Franz, Bryson Franz, Jack McMullen Matusek, Sam Matusek, Walker Franz, Harris Franz and Presley Carter and a great-grand child, Bracken Lane Franz. Doug also leaves behind his beloved Peaches and Pudgy as well as the 2007 World Champion Quarter Horse, Illegal Memories.
Doug was an entrepreneur by nature and began his first business as a boy selling watermelons. He quickly moved on to cars, horses, and anything that had wheels on it. He owned Allen Ford Sales, a Ford dealership in Palacios, Tx. and Cowboys Custom Trailers in Bastrop. Tx. With his daughters he co-founded Double D Ranchwear of Yoakum, a nationally recognized clothing brand and winner of numerous fashion awards. But Doug’s life passion was always race horses. He was known throughout the racing industry as an outstanding horseman with a unique eye to hand pick a runner. He took many a horse to the winner circle, but was most proud of his 2007 World Champion Gelding, Illegal Memories.
A Celebration of Doug McMullen’s life was held June 14, 2010 at Marrs-Jones-Newby Funeral Home in Bastrop followed by fellowship and Doug’s favorite Texas BBQ.
God broke the mold when he created Doug: he was one-of-a-kind. He loved his family, fast cars, faster horses, a good Harley ride, an all-night canasta game, telling tall tales, eating jelly from a jar and Margie’s sweet tea.
He will be remembered for his giving spirit, his heart felt laughter, and his genuine smile. His family will miss him. They loved him well.

MARY PATRICIA “CHOC” OTTINO
A Funeral Mass for Mary Patricia “Choc” Ottino, 58, of Mount Pleasant, Tx. and formerly of Palacios, Tx., was held June 10, 2010 at St. Anthony de Padua Catholic Church with the Rev. Charles Dwomoh officiating. Interment was at Palacios cemetery.
Mrs. Ottino was born Feb. 23, 1952, in Palacios, to the late John Manuel Ottino and Eufemia Alvarado Ottino. She passed away June 3, 2010.
She worked in environmental services and was a member of St. Anthony’s de Padua Catholic Church in Palacios.
She is survived by her daughter, Amanda Guerrero of Mount Pleasant; sisters, Virginia Davila of Lone Wolf, Okla., Sylvia Garcia of Palacios, Elvia Araguz of El Campo, and Cynthia Ottino of Mount Pleasant; brothers, Henry Ottino Sr. and Carlos Ottino Sr., both of Palacios, and Louis Ottino of Mount Pleasant; and three grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Frances “Chica” Martinez; and brother, John Ottino Jr.
Pallbearers were Carlos Garcia, Gregorio Guerrero, Jose Guerrero, Henry Ottino Jr., Frank Castellanos Jr., Carlos Ottino Jr., Juan Fidel Guerrero Jr., and Lino Garcia.

PETER ‘Pete’ CYRIL KOCUREK
A Rosary for Peter “Pete” Cyril Kocurek, 83 of Palacios, Tx., was held May 21, 2010 at St. Philip the Apostle Catholic Church in El Campo. Funeral services follwed with Rev. Gary Janak officiating. Burial was at Holy Cross Memorial Park.
Mr. Kocurek was born Nov. 3, 1926 in Hillje, Tx. to Anton and Amelia Rek Kocurek. He passed away May 19, 2010.
Pete served his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II aboard the USS Pennsylvania from 1942-1946. He worked for Alcoa until his retirement in 1986. He was a member of the VFW Post 4403, Knights of Columbus Council 6889, and American Legion Post 251.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Edith Shimek Kocurek; daughters Freda Schneider and husband Roger of El Maton, and Dorene Kocurek of Freeport; sons Glenn Kocurek and wife Lana of Carthage, and Gary Kocurek and wife Jan of Pledger; sisters Lydia Sablatura and husband Adolph of Wharton and Mary Womack of Wharton; brother Ignac Kocurek and wife Charlene of Pledger; 17 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; and 2 great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; son Derrill Kocurek; and brothers Anton, Stanley, Jerome, and Paul Kocurek.
Pallbearers were Donald Sablatura, Ricky Kocurek, Lloyd Kocurek, Gaven Schneider, Pete Sneden and Derin Schneider.
