ROBERT J. FLETCHER
Graveside services for Robert J. Fletcher, 91, of Palacios, Tx. will be held at 10 a.m. May 18, 2009 at Hawley cemetery in Blessing, Tx. with the Rev. Charles Dwonoh officiating. Military honors will be under the auspices of Veterans of Foreign Wars Queen Hamlin Post #2467 in Palacios.
A rosary will be held at 7 p.m. Sunday at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church.
Mr. Fletcher was born July 28, 1917 in Beaumont to the late John Albert Fletcher and Marie Theroit Flethcer. He died May 14, 2009.
He retired from the United States Postal Service as a Letter Carrier. He was a Veteran of World War II, United States Navy, Pacific Theatre. He helped design the bomb-bay release on the Enola Gay, which dropped the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan.
He is survived by his daughter Cindy Jo Quigg of Katy, Tx. and a son Scott Fletcher of Palacios.
Mr. Fletcher was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Myrtle Warn Fletcher, and sister Stella Mouton.
Pallbearers will be Wayne Hunter, Glen Barnett, Taylor Tueutsch, Lee Juarez, Zach Quigg and Joshua Price.
MARY ANN LASLIE GRIFFITH
Funeral services for Mary Ann Laslie Griffith, 76, of Palacios, Tx. were held May 15, 2009 at Palacios Funeral Home with Rev. Zach Nicholson officiating. Interment was at Palacios cemetery.
Mrs. Griffith was born Sept. 27, 1932 in Palacios to the late Willie Harden “Bill” and Alvena Kopecky Laslie. She passed away May 12, 2009.
Mrs. Griffith had many loves and hobbies in her life including her children, gardening, hunting, fishing, and the love of cooking. She was a member of the United Daughters of the Confederacy and an affiliate of the Church of Christ.
She is survived by sons Durrell “Pete” Griffith and wife Deean of Markham, Tx., Lewis Griffith and wife Linda of Midfield, Tx., and Willie Griffith and wife Robin of Blessing, Tx.; granddaughters D’Lynn Rahe, Heather, Alicia, and Kara Griffith; grandsons Frankie and Jeff Knebel, Wade, Chad, Chris, C.J., and Kyle Griffith; 15 great-grandchildren; sisters Vivian Turner, Willie Mae Simpson, and Lucille Dendy; brothers Lonnie B., Raymond, and Charles Laslie; and by numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, daughter Phyllis Griffith Gill and grandson: Brian Griffith.
Pallbearers were Chad Griffith, Chris Griffith, C.J. Griffith, Kyle Griffith, Wade Griffith, and Jeffery Knebel. Honorary pallbearer was Frankie Knebel.

BYRON “BARNEY” WALLEN
A memorial service for Byron “Barney” Wallen, 63, of Palacios, Tx., was held May 16, 2009 at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church with Pastor Robert LeBlanc officiating.
Mr. Wallen was born March 16, 1946, in Sayersville, Ky., to the late Morris Wallen and Arizona “Zona” Cole Wallen. He passed away May 4, 2009.
He was a retired heavy equipment operator and a member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church.
He is survived by his wife, Mi Cha Ko Wallen of Palacios; daughters, Annette Wallen Schwenk of Port Aransas, Tx., Patti Wallen of Freeport, Maine, and Michelle Wallen Schuff of Bridge City, Tx.; son, David Wallen of La Porte, Ind.; sisters, Phyllis Banks of West Union, Ohio, Ruby Laws of Carlisle, Ohio, Pauline Wallen Eldridge of Middletown, Ohio, and Debra Russell of Middletown, Ohio; brothers, Charles Wallen of Elizabeth, Ind. and William Wallen of Florida; and seven grandchildren, Ramon Wallen of Port Aransas, Tiffiny Schwenk of Port Aransas, Erica Ciffili Wallen of Freeport, Maine, Hailly Curtis of Freeport Maine, Andy Turner of La Porte, Ind., Heath Turner of Bridge City, and Cassandra Black of Bridge City.

BOBBY RAY UPTON
Funeral services for Bobby Ray Upton, Sr., 79, of McRae, AR and formerly of Palacios, TX, were held May 7, 2009 at Westbrook Funeral Home in Beebe, AR.
Mr. Upton was born Nov. 23, 1929 at Alto, TX to Everett and Lillie Matlock Upton. He died May 5, 2009.
He was a retired truck driver and construction worker, a member of the Labor Union, a Mason, and a member of McRae First Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by brothers, Jack L. and Kenneth Don and sisters Sue Carolyn and Ginger Ann.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Minnie Faye Upton; son, Bobby Upton, Jr. and wife Colette of St. Louis, MO; grandchildren Noah Ray and Hannah Aili; brother-in-law Tommy Johns of Louise, TX; sister-in-law Liz Burnsed of Sallisaw, OK; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

MAYME CALO DUKE
Funeral services for Mayme Duke, 87, of Blessing, Tx., were held April 27, 2009 at St. Peter’s Catholic Church with Rev. Samuel Appiasi officiating. Interment was at Hawley cemetery in Blessing, TX.
Mrs. Duke was born February 27, 1922 in Hitchcock, Tx. to the late Joseppi Calo and Dominica Matranga Calo. She passed away April 25, 2009.
She is survived by her daughter Marjorie Anne Planka and husband Frank Planka of Alvin, Tx.; sons Elmo Duke, Jr. and wife Rita Marianne Duke of Bay City, and Anthony Duke, Sr. and wife Carolyne Duke of Liverpool; a sister, Rita Gates of San Antonio; 10 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and 7 great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband Elmo “Pete” Duke, Sr.; and by 7 sisters and 1 brother.
Pallbearers were Anthony Duke III, John “Johnny” Duke, Robert Lee Duke, Cody Duke, Christopher J. Duke, Brian Duke and J. D. Greenawalt. Honorary pallbearers were John Duke, Elmo “Bubba” Duke III, and Mark Greenawalt.

TRAVIS WASHINGTON
Graveside services for Travis Washington, 75, of Palacios, Tx., were held April 23, 2009 at the Palacios cemetery with Guy H. Washington, Jr. officiating.
Mr. Washington was born Sept. 30, 1933 in Linden, Tx. to Guy H. and Mary Elizabeth Meacham Washington. He passed away April 19, 2009.
He retired from Palacios ISD after 30 years serving as both teacher and principal. He will be remembered as a Texas Longhorn fan and an avid golfer.
He is survived by his mother, Mary Washington of Clute; daughter Debbie Klump and husband Dennis of Port Lavaca; granddaughter Crystal Woody and husband Brett and great-grandson Trent Bo Billy Woody all of Port Lavaca; sisters Sara White and husband Ben of Freeport, and Martha Miller and husband Joel of Alvarado, TX; and brothers Guy Washington, Jr. and wife Pat of Hemphill, Jerry Washington and wife Bonnie of Palacios, Don Washington of Arkansas, and George Washington and wife Cheryl of Wharton.
He was preceded in death by his father; wife Emma J. Washington and brother Merril Washington.
Pallbearers were Jerry D. Washington, Jr., Jerry D. Washington III, Ben White, Travis Washington, George Washington and Guy H. Washington III. Honorary palbrearers are his old golfing buddies and Palacios School District employees and his great-grandsons.

MORRETT LEE BAKER
Funeral services for Morrett Lee Baker, 81, of Palacios, Tx. were held April 22, 2009 at Wharton Funeral Home in Wharton with Deacon Alvin Matthys officating. Graveside services and interment were at Forest Park Lawndale cemetery in Houston.
Mr. Baker was born on Nov. 15, 1927 in Jennings, LA to Alex Baker and Naomi Dugat Baker. He died April 18, 2009 in a Sugar Land hospital following an extended illness.
He was a 1947 graduate of St. Thomas High School in Houston. He was employed at Great Southern Life Insurance Company in Houston from 1958 until 1975. Lee married
Nina Jane Kriss on June 9, 1962 in Houston. Lee and Nina moved to Wharton in 1975 and owned the Wakefield Motel until 1992. They then lived in Millville, PA for 11 years. He retired in Palacios in 2003. He was Catholic by Faith. He was a former member of the Wharton Country Club and was an avid golfer.
He is survived by his wife, Nina Baker of Palacios; and nieces Donna Gayle Ashlock, Charla Upton, Wendi Davenport, Sandy Yoder and Paula Fitzwater. He was preceded in death by a sister, Shirley Spears.
Honorary pallbearers are all of his golfing buddies and friends.
