Funeral services for Josephine O. Gonzales, 82, of Palacios, Tx. wereMarch 26, 2009 at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church with Rev. Charles Domowoh officiating. Interment was at Palacios cemetery.
Mrs. Gonzales was born April 12, 1926 in Freeport, TX to the late John J. and Dorothy Roach Ottino. She passed away March 21, 2009.
She was a member of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, Palacios Senior Center, Catholic Daughters and active in the Palacios VFW Queen-Hamlin Post 2467.
She is survived by daughters Stella Dorsett and husband Ron, Linda Garcia and husband Jesse, and Rosemary Gonzales, all of Houston; son Augustine Gonzales, Jr. and wife Yvette of Houston; sister Margie Acosta of Bay City; grandchildren Erik Gonzales, Jessica Garcia, Leslie Garcia and Jordan Garcia; niece Dee Ann Schwan and husband Alex; and great niece Devin Schwan.
She was preceded in death by her husband Augustine Gonzales, son John Anthony Gonzales, brother J. V. Ottino and brother-in-law John Gilbert Acosta.

JACK CARROLL SARDELICH
Private interment services will be held at a later date for Jack Carroll Sardelich, 44, of Brazoria, Tx. and formerly of Palacios.
Mr. Sardelich was born Sept. 27, 1964 in Corpus Christi, Tx. to John Carroll Sardelich and Betty Tanner Sardelich. He passed away March 17, 2009.
He grew up in Palacios and attended Palacios High School.He was a hard working man all of his life and loved spending time fishing with his children.
He is survived by his wife, Jennifer Knebel Sardelich of Brazoria; his children Jaren Sardelich, Jaxen Sardelich, Jaden Sardelich, Sydney Matthys and Jacob Hoffman; father John Sardelich of Palacios; mother Betty Hart and husband Bruce of Palacios; in-laws Adolph and Heidi Knebel of West Columbia, Tx., and Shirley and Richard Barnes of Weimer, Tx.; sister Joan Kocurek and her husband Wayne of Palacios; brothers Johnny Sardelich of Markham, Tx., Jeffrey Sardelich of Boonville, Arkansas and Patrich Sardelich of Bayou Vista, Tx.; brothers-in-law Keven and David Knebel and family; and serveral nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles.

JOAN LAMAR
Funeral services for Joan Lamar, 81, of Palacios, Tx. were held March 12, 2009 at the Palacios Funeral Home Chapel with Revs. Andy and Janell Blair officiating. Interment was at Hawley cemetery.
Mrs. Lamar was born Oct. 2, 1927 in Jasper, Tx. to the late Benjamin Franklin and Mary Cless Long Smith. She passed away March 9, 2009.
She owned and operated the Pier Drive-In in Palacios for over 30 years. She was awarded the Palacios Chamber of Commerce’s Merchant of the Year Award in 1983.
She is survived by her husband, Leonard L. Lamar of Palacios; daughter Melissa Ann Carpenter of Palacios; sons Robert Alton Porter, Jr., Edward Dale Porter and James Gaylord Porter, all of Palacios; brother Ernest Everett Smith; grandchildren Christina Giest, Annie Burnett, Lara Rendon, Eric Carpenter, Scott Porter and Ronnie Porter; and five great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her son, Ronald Allen Porter; one brother, and two sisters.

LEONIDES 'Lenny' NEVAREZ GARCIA
Funeral services for Leonides “Lenny” Nevarez Garcia, 65, of Palacios, were held March 6, 2009 at St. Anthony de Padua Catholic Church with Father Charles Dwomoh officiating. Interment was at Palacios cemetery.
Mrs. Nevarez was born April 10, 1943, in Edcouch, Tx. to the late Leonardo Nevarez Sr. and Matiana Gonzalez Nevarez. She passed away March 3, 2009.
She was a homemaker and a member of St. Anthony de Padua Catholic Church.
She is survived by her daughters Naomi Rivas of Palacios and Alma Puentes, both of Palacios, and Angelica Garcia of El Campo; sons Oscar Garcia Sr. of Port Lavaca, Paul Anthony Garcia Jr., Carlos Ray Garcia Sr. and Israel Garcia Sr., all of Palacios; sister Linda Escobedo of Palacios; brothers Wally Nevarez of Bay City, Leonard Nevarez Sr. and Leo Nevarez Sr., both of Port Lavaca, and Leonel Nevarez Sr. of Palacios; 23 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Pablo Pena Garcia Jr.; sister, Leonora Garcia; and brother, Leon Nevarez.
Pallbearers were Oscar Garcia Sr., Paul Anthony Garcia Jr., Israel Garcia Sr., Carlos Ray Garcia Sr., Leo Garcia Sr., and Ismael Lara Jr. Honorary pallbearers were Thomas Garcia Jr., Jeremy Rivas, P.J. Garcia Jr., O.J. Garcia Jr., and Israel Garcia Jr.

TRACY LEE BARRETT
Funeral services Tracy Lee Barrett, 87, were held Feb. 25, 2009 at Rosewood Funeral Chapel in Victoria, Tx. with Rev. Leon Maxwell officiating. Interment was at Swickheimer cemetery.
Mrs. Barrett was born Sept. 7, 1921 to John C. and Beulah White in San Antonio, Tx. She went to be with her Lord on Feb. 23, 2009 after a lengthy challenge with Alzheimers.
She will be missed by her loving family and friends. She grew up and graduated from LaWard High School and after marrying she moved to Palacios where she spent most of her life. She was residing in Victoria at the time of her death.
She is survived by two daughters, Carla Barrett Jansky of Victoria and Nancy Lee Barrett of Palacios; son and daughter-in-law, Carl and Glenda Barrett of Matagorda; brother, Arthur White of LaWard; seven grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; six great-great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, Tracy was preceded in death by her husband, Henry Sterling Barrett, Sr.; son, Henry Sterling Barrett, Jr.; sister, Wanda Rickaway and brothers, Johnny, Harvey and Charles White.
Pallbearers were four of Mrs. Barretts’s great-grandchildren, Hayden Alexander Nemes, Dalton Wade Naiser, Connor Michael Barrett and Hunter Garrett Wynn, as well as Mark Steven McDonald, Jimmy Dale Jansky and Howard Helms.
MARGIE R. JAMES
Funeral services Margie R. James, 77, of Palacios, Tx., were held Feb. 21, 2009 at Forest Park Lawndale Funeral Home in Houston.
Mrs. James was born on Nov. 14, 1931 in Houston to the late Herman and Susie Robertson.
She passed away on Feb. 18, 2009. She was a member of the Palacios First Baptist Church.
She is survived by her husband of 43 years, Herbert James of Palacios; son Jack David and wife Dorothy of San Marcos, stepson Jerry James and wife Debbie and step-grandaughters
GILBERT FLORES, JR.
Funeral services for Gilbert Flores, Jr., 74, of Palacios, Tx., were held Feb. 19, 2009 at the Trinity Baptist Church in Palacios with Rev. Louis Rush officiating. Interment was at Palacios cemetery.
Mr. Flores was born May 5, 1934 in Palacios to the late Gilbert Flores, Sr. and Agnes Broussard Flores. He passed away Feb. 16, 2009.
He was a retired Tug Boat Captain and served in the US Navy.
He is survived by his wife Norma Flores of Palacios; sons Steven Flores of Palacios, Michael Flores of Austin, Chris Rutherford, Brandon Flores and Bryan Flores all of Palacios; sisters Dorothy Anderson of Rockdale, TX and Joyce Flores of CA; and five grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Bobby Bickham, Melvin Bickham, Arthur Gonzales, Lawrence Kelly, Richard Sandate and Richard Torres.

ESTELLE ANGELINE ELDER ALLEY
Graveside services for Estelle Angeline Elder Alley, 99, of Palacios, Tx., were held Feb. 16, 2009 at Palacios cemetery with Dr. Ben Sheeran and Rev. Zach Nicholson officiating.
She was born Jan. 28, 1910 in Palacios, the youngest of nine children of P. A. and Mary H. Elder. She passed away Feb. 14, 2009 after a brief illness.
She was an active member of First Baptist Church and had taught a women’s Sunday School class at the church following a tradition of teaching the class which her mother started many years before.
During the Depression Estelle visited her cousin in Chicago, Illinois and met Charles Henry Alley an artist whom she married
. When she brought him to Texas for a visit he was charmed by Texas and quickly began pulling strings to find a job in Texas. Fort Worth was their home for several years and Henry got started in the farming and ranching business. When World War II happened they both came to Palacios to work at Camp Hulen.
Estelle helped care for her invalid mother and participated in the Home Demonstration Club. She prided herself on her cooking and entertaining. She delighted in calling herself Grand Ma to her great nieces and nephews. Her last years before going to the nursing home were spent in the family compound at South Bay along with her brother Ted, her sisters Olivia and Vic and her niece Mary Sheeran.
She is survived by her niece, Mary Sheeran; nephew Cliff Ress; and many great nieces and nephews and great-great nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry Alley, and her parents.
