JOE ‘Mafia’ EUGENE FLORES
Funeral services for Joe ‘Mafia’ Eugene Flores, 52, of Port Lavaca, Tx., were held July 4, 2008 at the Living Word Church in Palacios with Rev. Tony Flores officiating. Interment was at Palacios cemetery.
Mr. Flores was born Jan. 1, 1956 in Corpus Christi, Tx. to the late Angel P. and Mary Llanes Flores. He died June 29, 2008.
He was employed by Brazos M&E; Construction.
He is survived by his wife, Maria Ybarra Flores; daughters and sons-in-law daughters and son-in-laws: Jennifer and Josh Cumbie, Angel and CJ Diaz, Sunshine and Sergio Macias all of Port Lavaca; 7 grandchildren; sisters Hope Marroquin, Diana Gonzales and Jackie Flores of Palacios and Mary A. Flores-Olenick of San Marcos, Tx.; brothers John A. Flores, Larry C. Flores, Jesse D. Flores and Chris Flores all of Palacios, Mario R. Flores of Lake Charles, LA, and Isidro Flores of Seattle, WA.; and numerous nices and nephews.
Pallbearers were nephews Jose A. Gonzalez, Jr., Esteban Gonzalez, Ray Flores, Craig Flores, Efren Marroquin, and Ezekiel Marroquin. Honorary pallbearers were son-in-laws CJ Diaz and Sergio Macias.
Arrangements were with Artero Memorial Chapels of Port Lavaca.
MARY WEBB BARNHILL
A memorial service for Mary Webb Barnhill, 72 of Waco, Tx., was held July 3, 2008 at at Wilkirson-Hatch-Bailey Funeral Home in Waco with James Haney of Salado officiating.
Ms. Barnhill was born Oct. 5, 1935 in McGregor, Tx, to Graham and Grace Webb. She died June 30, 2008.
She graduated from McGregor High School in 1954 and received degrees from North Texas State University (1957), Tarleton State University (1975) and Texas A&M; University in 1976. She taught at high schools in Ballinger, Palacios, Robert Lee, Midway and Gatesville during her 34 years as a teacher and Vocational Counselor.
Ms. Barnhill forged lasting ties with her students, as teacher, mentor and friend, maintaining contact with many of them long after they graduated. After retirement in 1995, she moved to Waco so she could be close to her farm in Coryell County and nearer her lifelong friends and family. She was known among her family and friends for her quiet generosity and diligent caregiving.
An avid believer in higher education, Ms. Barnhill established The Mary Barnhill Endowed Scholarship to benefit students at Texas A&M; University’s College of Agriculture and Life Sciences and the College of Education and Human Development.

JANE CARTWRIGHT WEED
A memorial service for Jane Cartwright Weed, 87, of Katy, Tx. was held July 2, 2009 at the United Methodist Church in Palacios. A graveside service was held July 5 at Oakland cemetery in Terrell, Tx.
Mrs. Weed was born in Terrell, Tx. on Oct. 3, 1920 to the late Leonidas and Jane Ross Gladney Cartwright. She died June 30, 2008 in Katy, Tx.
She graduated from Terrell High School, Methodist University, and East Texas Teacher’s College. She received a Bachelor of Science and a teaching certificate. She taught for two years at the Texas State Military School She married
William F. Weed (Bill) on Oct. 6, 1954 and lived in Beaumont, Tx until her move to Palacios, Tx. in 1993 to be closer to her grandchildren. She moved again in 2007 to follow her family into the Katy area.
She was a member of many social and civic groups and was a member of the United Methodist Church, Daughters of the American Revolution, and the South Texas Historical Society. She was very loved and served as a great inspiration to her family. She will be dearly missed.
She is survived by her son James Ross Weed and his wife Mary; son, Thomas Weed and wife Kay; granddaughters Ellen Deering, Carol Thigpen, Elizabeth Weed, Kathy Weed, Linda Weed, Jamie Weed, Tess Weed’ grandsons Jacob Cuellar and Jeremy Cuellar; brother Lon Cartwright; seven great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband William F. Weed, brother Columbus W (Cumby) Cartwright, daughter Elizabeth Jerome (Jere) Weed, and son Frank Weed.

REV. JESSE T. JONES
Funeral services for Rev. Jesse T. Jones, 77, of Palacios, were held July 1, 2008 at the Apostolic Pentecostal Church in Bay City with Rev. Marvin Cole and Rev. C. M. Becton officiating. Interment was at Hawley cemetery in Blessing.
Rev. Jones was born Nov. 22, 1930 in Old Gulf, TX to the late Moses Dewitt & Mary Victoria Ham Jones. He passed away June 26, 2008.
He had been a resident of Palacios for 35 years where he pastored at the United Pentecostal Church of Palacios.
Survivors include his wife Shirley Ann Jones of Palacios; daughters Tannamia Lorraine Hall & husband Tim of Travelers Rest, SC, Karan Yukiko Jones of Pearland, TX & Dawn Yanalynn Ringo & husband Robert of League City, TX; sister Ruby “Judy” Sutton of Palacios, TX; by his grandchildren: Kimberly Allerkamp & husband Simon, Billy Saxon, III, Mellani Hill & husband James, and Ryan Saxon; and by one great grandchild: Angelina Denae Malone.

LYDIA LILLIAN ZEMANEK
Lydia Lillian Zemanek, 89, of Blessing, Texas passed away peacefully with her children by her side in Victoria, Texas on June 21, 2008 after a short hospital stay. She was born on December 1, 1918 in Birch, Texas to the late Ludwig and Clara Junek.
Funeral services were held June 24, 2008 at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Blessing with Father Samuel Appiasi officiating. Interment was at St. Peter’s Catholic cemetery in Blessing. Pallbearers were her sons and sons-in-law.
Lydia married
the late Victor Zemanek on September 1, 1943 in Blessing. In the early 1940’s, they bought a cotton farm and moved to Blessing where they raised their nine children and lived together for 52 years.
Lydia spent her early married
years helping her husband establish a successful farming operation while raising her children and staying involved in their school and after-school activities. In retirement, she enjoyed watching her family grow with each additional grandchild or great-grandchild. Lydia was a member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Blessing. She was a devout Catholic and lived her daily life as a Christian. Lydia was a kind, caring person who loved her family and friends and took great joy in spending time with them. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and sister. Lydia lived a full and rich life with her family and friends. We take great comfort in knowing that she is now at peace in Heaven with her Lord.
Lydia’s life was centered around her family to whom she was totally devoted. She was preceded in death by her husband, Victor Zemanek, her daughter, Rose Marie Snyder, and her son-in-law, Donnie Genzer. She is also preceded in death by her brothers Edwin Junek, Joe Junek, and L. J. Junek, and her sister Mary Jane Lezak. She is survived by her children Victor Joe Zemanek and wife Ginger of Granbury, Texas; Mary Ann DeKunder and husband Tom of Schertz, Texas; John Henry Zemanek and wife Tracy of Marrero, Louisiana; Robert Zemanek and wife Joane of Victoria, Texas; Jerry Zemanek and wife Cindy of Grapevine, Texas; Doris Genzer of Markham, Texas; Lillian Chastain and husband Dennis of Cypress, Texas; Betty Jean Crain and husband Darrell of College Station, Texas; son-in-law Jim Snyder of Carrollton, Texas; eighteen grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her three sisters: Verna Turek of Palacios, Texas; Clara Gordon of Burnet, Texas; and Emma Jean Piwonka of Blessing, Texas.
Memorials may be made to St. Peter’s Catholic Church or to a charity of donor’s choice.

JOHN GILBERT ACOSTA
Funeral services for John Gilbert Acosta, 70, of Bay City, were held June 25, 2008 at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Palacios with Rev. Charles Dwomoh officiating. Interment was at Palacios cemetery.
John was born June 19, 1938 to the late B. F. and Stella Gomez Acosta. A loving husband, wonderful father and grandfather, he passed away June 22, 2008 after a brief illness.
He attended and graduated from Bay City High School. John served 3 years in the US Marine Corps before beginning a career with the US Postal Service that lasted 41 years. In an article written in 2002, John stated that he had reached his goal to become a Postmaster; he was ready to retire. In his spare time John officiated basketball, baseball, softball, football, and most recently volleyball. John also coached in his spare time at Holy Cross Elementary where he began the track team and softball team in the 1970’s. He was the coach of the Invaders girls’ softball team for many years.
In his 40’s and 50’s John was an avid runner. Many knew him as the lunchtime runner, running on his lunch breaks then returning to work. John entered and placed in many fun runs in nearby towns and accepted numerous trophies. He was a Dallas Cowboys fan and a great fan of the San Antonio Spurs. He enjoyed watching all sports; his favorite team was the UT Longhorns.
John was a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church in Bay City where he was a Sacristan, Usher, member of the Militia of the Immaculata, and the Knight of Columbus. John loved his church and his Savior.
Survivors include his wife of 45 years, Margaret Ottino Acosta; daughter Dee Ann Schwan and husband Alex; granddaughter Devin Schwan; sisters Alice Villarreal and Mary Ann Cervantes; and brothers Anthony & Albert Acosta.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his in-laws John and Dorothy Ottino; brother-in-law Johnny V. “Jay” Ottino; sisters Lucy Delos Santos, Esther Acosta, Katy Charles and Stella Silva; and brothers Abel and Louis Acosta.
Pallbearers were Joe Koliba, Jerry Lipinski, Jim Smith, Eric Gonzales, William Dale and Andy Hawkins.

CHARLES JOSEPH ‘Tinker’ REMLINGER
Funeral services for Charles Joseph “Tinker” Remlinger, Jr., 76, of Palacios, were held June 2, 2008 at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Palacios with Rev. Charles Dwomoh officiating. Interment was at St. Peter’s Catholic cemetery in Blessing.
Mr. Remlinger was born July 19, 1931 in Riviera, Tx. to the late Charles and Amanda Remlinger. He passed away May 29, 2008.
He was a devoted member of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church and the Knight of Columbus. He worked for Celanese Chemical Corp. for 23 years and retired in 1989. Not one to be idle, Tinker soon became an inspector for the Matagorda County-Palacios Seawall Commission where he served for 17 years before retiring in 2006.
He is survived by his sons and daughters-in-law Chuck and Irene of Katy, Bruce and Kim of Fredericksburg, Paul of Bay City, Mark and Lucille of Blessing, Scott abd Karen of Houston; daughters and sons-in-law Ann Glaze of San Antonio, Lynn and Larry Koether of Van Vleck, and Jane Remlinger of Palacios; sisters Agnes Blake and Edna Walker of Austin; 21 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Elizabeth Remlinger; son Kirk; sister Margaret Kuntscher; and brothers Victor, Harold and John Remlinger.
Pallbearers were grandsons Kirk, Craig, Erich and Paul Ryan Remlinger, Bubba and Ross Glaze, Matthew and Jacob Koether, Bruce Junek, Jr. and Austin Frick.
