JAMES KIRKWOLD CLAYBOURN
A memorial service for James Kirkwold Claybourn, 76, of Powers, Oregon, was held Jan. 20, 2008 at the Powers Baptist Church. Burial is planned at Fort Sam Houston National cemetery, San Antonio, Tx. at a later date.
Mr. Claybourn was born March 22, 1931, in Elk City, Oklahoma to Blanche Louise Kirkwold Claybourn and Guy Raymond Claybourn, Sr. He died Jan. 13, 2008 in Powers, Oregon.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy, and niece, Celia Kay Claybourn, both of Powers; sister Joann Dyson, of La Salle, Tx.; brothers and sisters-in-law Guy and Colleen Claybourn, Jr. of Palacios, Tx. and Jon and Kaye Claybourn of Bay City, Tx; and by many nieces, nephews, and their children.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters and brothers-in-law Marian and Louis Curran, Sr. and Lura Nell and Ray Anders; brother and sister-in-law Henry Marshall, Sr. and Bettye Claybourn; and brother-in-law Carl T. Dyson.

JOSE LARA GARCIA
Funeral services for Jose Lara Garcia, 76, of Palacios, were held Jan. 18, 2008 at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church with Father Charles Dwomoh officiating. Interment will follow at the Palacios cemetery.
Mr. Garcia was born Aug. 28, 1931 in Mexico to the Late Petra Garcia and Ramon Lara. He died Jan. 15, 2008 in Houston.
Mr. Garcia was a long time resident of Palacios, and a member of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church.
He is survived by wife Maria Lara of Palacios; daughter Rosa Lara of Palacios; sons Jose G. Lara and Joel Lara and wife Eugenia all of Freeport, Jorge Lara and wife Maria, Jesus Lara and wife Judy, and Ismael Lara all of Palacios; sisters Esperanza Salinas of Mexico and Yolanda Salinas of Pharr, TX; 13 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Arrangements were with Palacios Funeral Home.
JOHN EMMITT WELSH
Graveside services for John Emmett Welsh, 85, of Red Oak, Oklahoma were held Jan. 15, 2008 at Baldwin cemetery in Wilburton, Oklahoma with Rev. Randy Waldrop officiating.
Mr. Welsh was born May 21, 1922 in Palacios, TX to the late Don Emmett and Grace (Hicks Stapleton) Welsh.
He had been a resident of Palacios for over 40 years. He was a pipe fitter. He proudly served in the US Army Air Force, a member of the Disabled American Vets and a lifetime member of the VFW.
Mr. Welsh is survived by his daughters and son-in-law Merriam Owings-English and Arthur English, Angelia Harris and Elizabeth Black all of Red Oak, Oklahoma; a sister, Bonnie Kasiah of Port Lavaca, TX; two brothers, Carl Welsh of Blessing, TX and Jimmie Welsh of Brazoria, TX; 7 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Maggie Dorene Newberry; his daughters, Edith and Jo Crosby; his brothers Billy Welsh and Freddy Welsh; and his three sisters, Francis Stapleton, Kathleen Maddox and Irene Williams.
EPIFANIA BRISENO MORALES
Funeral services for Epifania Briseno Morales, 76, of Palacios were held Jan. 15, 2008 at St. Anthony de Padua Catholic Church. Interment was at Palacios cemetery.
Mrs. Morales was a homeaker and a member of St. Anthony de Padua Catholic Church.
Mrs. Morales was born Jan. 18, 1931, in Old Gulf, Tx. to the late Facudo and Tinindad Camacho Briseno. She died Jan. 11, 2008.
She is survived by sisters Savina Rodriguez of Victoria and Clara Cruz of Palacios; sons Benito Morales Sr., Adres Morales, Sr. of Bay City, Joe Morales of Birmingham, AL, Antonio Morales Sr. of Palacios, and Pete Morales of Blessing; daughters Lucy Gonzales, Lydia Guerrero, Mary Delores Perez, Delia Garcia of Palacios and San Juanita Mena of San Antonio; 43 grandchildren, 66 great-grandchildren; and 14 great-great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband Dionicio Morales, Sr., sister Rosenda Ybarra and son Dionicio Morales, Jr.
Pallbearers were Robert Garcia, Joel Mena, Dionicio Morales, Joseph Victor Morales, Jason Guerrero, David Morales, Juan Manuel Gonzales, Michael Morales and Adrian Garcia.
DOROTHY LEE CURTIS PEASE
Funeral services for Dorothy Lee Curtis Pease, 92, were held Jan. 15, 2008 at Northwood Presbyterian Church in San Antonio. Interment was at Fort Sam Houston National cemetery.
Mrs. Pease was born in Palacios, Texas on Aug. 22, 1916 to George W. and Ethlyn Verle Curtis. She passed away Jan.10, 2008.
Dorothy graduated from Texas A & I University, Kingsville (B.Ed.) and earned a Master's Degree from trinity University, San Antonio (M.Ed.) She also attended Chicago Musical College where she studied voice and piano. She taught 44 years in public schools (over 40 years in the San Antonio ISD-Jefferson HS and Longfellow MS) and directed numerous award-winning choirs. In addition, she was the choir director at Westminster Presbyterian Church for 46 years, until the church closed. At that time she joined Northwood Presbyterian Church and sang in the choir as long as health allowed. Dorothy had a magnificent voice. She entertained our troops during WWII as well as performing for many dear friends and family for weddings and other major events. Dorothy was a devoted wife, mother, and teacher. She was a member of Zeta Beta Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma Society International. For the past several years she was an avid student of the Bible, attending classes presented by Bible Study Fellowship (BSF).
Former voice and English students remember her for her expertise in both subjects and often credit her with aiding in their successes. She will be remembered for her strong faith and relentless work ethic.
Survivors include her brother Marvin Curtis (Barbara) of Palacios; daughter Verle Ann Proctor (Michael) and their son David; daughter D. Maelynne Pease. Other survivors include nephews and nieces; Robert G. Curtis (Cathy), Lynn Willis (Mike), Steve Curtis (Tracy), Kristi Knebel (Frankie), Kelly Curtis, Charles Eikenberg (Eileen), Donna Eikenberg, Frank and Doris Pease, Claudine Wingenter (Rob), great nieces and nephews; Heather Curtis, Jason Polasek, Scott Willis (Becky), Thomas Willis, Frannie and Lucia Wingenter, Kimberly, Randy, Rodney Eikenberg, Kory, Skyler Curtis, Matthew, Reece, and Raymond Knebel, Le Ann Wills, Scott, Jr., Caneron and Chase Willis, Cherry Proctor, Debra Blackwood, Claudia Feller and many more wonderful friends and family members.
She is predeceased by her husband of 52 years, Gordon F. Pease, who died on the same date seven years earlier, her brothers George M. Curtis, and Noel "Potts" Curtis.

RAYMOND CLIFTON NICHOLS
Raymond Clifton Nichols, 87, of Lake Jackson, Texas, and formerly of Palacios, died Dec. 27, 2007.
Mr. Nichols was born on Nov. 18, 1920, in Gilmer, Tx., to Harold Franklin Nichols and Lillie (Davis) Nichols. He was a Mason and Scottish Rite, and a Baptist deacon for 54 years. Raymond was a game warden for 21 years, 16 of those years were for Matagorda County. He was also a hand gun instructor for the NRA and was awarded several "Outstanding Marksman" certificates.
A memorial service was held Dec. 29, 2007, at the Second Baptist Church of Lake Jackson, with Pastor Gary Thornton officiating. Funeral and graveside services were held Dec. 31, 2007, in Mt. Pleasant, Tx. with Pastor Dane Riddle officiating. Both services were beautiful and deeply moving. Grandson Mark Chamblee and son-in-law Andy Jensen spoke of precious times remembered. Great-grandson, Zac Chamblee played "The Old Rugged Cross" and "Taps" on his trumpet.
Raymond is survived by his wife, Margaret (Manes) Nichols of Lake Jackson (they had been married
for 64 years); two daughters and sons-in-law, Margaret and Gary Chamblee of Lake Jackson, and Charlotte and Andy Jensen of Alvin; one sister, Maybell (Nichols) Hutchison of Mesquite, Texas; 5 grandchildren, and 4 great-grandchildren.
Raymond was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters.
Pallbearers were Mark Chamblee, Ray Jensen, Jimmy Cox, Zac Chamblee, Jack Metcalf, H.L. ONeal, and William J. Owens.
KATHERINE FRANGULLIE MIRANDA
Katherine Frangullie Miranda beloved mother of four children passed away Jan. 10, 2008, after a long illness. Born March 6, 1926, she was a long time resident of Palacios and is survived by the following: Her four children John Frank Rendon & wife Hilda of Richmond, TX, formerly of San Diego, CA, along with grandson John Frank Rendon, Jr., granddaughter Diana D. Rendon and great granddaughter Adriana granddaughter Elizabetrh Neuman & husband Craig all of San Diego, CA, grandson Jason A. Rendon & wife Tina of Sugar Land; daughter Cathy Vincent & husband Shelby of Houston along with grandson Shelby Vincent, Jr. of Las Vegas, NV along with great grand daughter Jaycee of Tomball, Texas and great grandson Christopher of Las Vegas, Nevada & granddaughter Dawn Rheinarz & husband Douglas along with great granddaughter Rendon of Missouri City; son Albert “Butch” Rendon of Galveston along with grandson Mark Rendon & wife Terri of Galveston, grandson Alex Rendon & wife Elizabeth with great grandson Shelton of Deer Park, TX, grandson Matthew & wife Amber of Galveston, and granddaughter Angela of Galveston; daughter Dolores Lyons of Galveston along with grandson Joshua Lyons & wife Angela & great granddaughter Addison of Huntsville, TX & granddaughter Michelle Burnett & husband Jason and great granddaughter Katherine of Huntsville, TX; husband Arthur G. Katherine was preceded in death by her father Lazarus Frangullie & mother Guadalupe Ochoa, sisters Olga Henderson, Toni Flores, Dora Coles & brother George Frangullie.

EAVALANA DIANE ‘Nina/Albert’ MURPHY
Eavalana Diane “Nina/Albert” Murphy 46, of Palacios, departed this earth in peace on Dec. 30, 2007 to be with the Lord and her beloved companion, known as her baby, “Harley B.”
Eavalana’s wish was to be cremated and have a “Celebration of Life” That celebration was held Jan. 12 at the Fraternal Order of Eagles.
Ms. Murphy was born Jan. 1, 1961 in Houston, Tx. She was a resident of Palacios for the past 30 years.
She is survived by her mother, Dorothy Mae Wigginton, of Palacios; sisters and brothers-in-law Candace Wigginton of Willis, Elizabeth Cowart of Palacios, Sandra Swire of Lolita, Carolyn and Earl White of Palacios, Debra and Tommy Myers of Bonifay, Fla., and Donna and Dean Reynolds of Arlington; brother and sister-in-law Billy and Kari Wigginton of Sugarland; a brother of choice Thomas Boutwell, of Palacios; her dear friend and son of choice Billy Komer of Palacios; and numerous nephews, nieces, friends and cohorts in crime.
She was preceded in death by her father, Durward Allen “Pete” Wigginton; brother Edward Louis Murphy, Sr.; niece Annie Mae White; and nephew Jeffrey Allen Reynolds.
JANICE LAURENCE JONES
Funeral services for Janice Laurence Jones, 82, of Palacios, were held Dec. 29, 2007 at Trinity Baptist Church in Palacios with Rev. Louis Rush officiating.
Interment was at Woodlawn cemetery in Houston with Rev. Ron Shott officiating.
Mrs. Jones was born June 24, 1925 in Austin, TX to the late Landis and Sadye Abbott Pledger. She passed away Dec. 26, 2007.
She was a resident of Palacios for 56 years and a member of Trinity Baptist Church. She graduated in 1945 from Lilly Jolly School of Nursing in Houston. She first worked as a nurse at Alcoa, then worked as a Registered Nurse for 14 years at Wagner General Hospital. She and her husband owned and operated Casey Plumbing in Palacios for many years.
She is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law Wanda and Wyly Harris of Lolita and Bobbie and Joe Kana of Palacios; 11 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two husbands, Robert D. Laurence and R.Q. “Casey” Jones; a daughter, Freddie Jean Laurence; a son, Robert Landis Laurence; and her sister, Peggy Smith.
Pallbearers were Dustin Winckler, Eric Kana, Jeff Soltow, Ben Hunt, Wyly Harris and Joe Kana.
