MABLE (Bobbie) HANSON ANTHIS
Graveside services for Mable (Bobbie) Hanson Anthis, 87, of Palacios, were held Aug. 27, 2007 in Milam County, Tx.
Mrs. Anthis was born Oct. 13, 1919 in Minnesota. She died Aug. 23, 2007 at Port Lavaca Nursing and Rehab Center. She was laid to rest beside her husband in a small cemetery named “Liberty” located between Milano and Cameron in Milam County Texas. In this cemetery, the Anthis family tree dates back to the Confederate Army.
She married
Joseph Horton Anthis Jr. and moved to Texas in 1944. She had been a resident of Palacios for the past 57 years.
Bobbie is remembered as the manager of the Moo Moo Milk Store in the 1960's and for her work in the high school cafeteria during the 1970's. She was a seamstress, upholsterer and wood furniture refinisher for many. She had also been a parttime inn-keeper at the Luther Hotel in the 1990's.
She is survived by her daughter, Roberta Anthis Ripke of Palacios; sons Roger Smith and wife Charlotte of LaCresenta, California, Jodie Anthis and wife Nancy of Huntsville Tx., and Leon Anthis of Palacios; 10 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by husband Joe Anthis, infant daughter Jeanie Bell Anthis, and son-in-law Clarence G. Ripke Jr.

MARY ELIZABETH FETTERLY FRIERY
Graveside services for Mary Elizabeth Fetterly Friery, 93, of Houston (formerly of Palacios), were held Aug. 25, 2007 at the Palacios cemetery with Rev. June White officiating.
Mrs. Friery was born April 18, 1914, in Yoakum, TX to Elizabeth Haemmerlin Fetterly and William Amos Fetterly. She died Aug. 20, 2007 at Cy-Fair Medical Center in Houston.
She moved to Palacios in 1935 and lived there until 1973. She returned in 1980 and moved to Houston for medical reasons in 2002. She always felt that Palacios was her home.
Mrs. Friery graduated from Baird High School and received her Bachelors degree from North Texas State University and her Master’s degree from the University of Houston. She taught school in Palacios for 27 years between 1935 through 1973. She was an active member of the First United Methodist Church where she served as a Communion Steward, Sunday School teacher, played the organ and piano for many years, and was active in the U.M.W.; a member of the Order of Eastern Star serving as Worthy Matron three times; and was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma from 1964 until 1975; a member of the Athena Club; a member of the Retired Teachers Association; organized and sponsored the F.T.A.; a member of the Matagorda Historical Association and served several terms on the Matagorda Historical Commission. She also enjoyed being a mentor after she retired from teaching.
She is survived by her daughters Mary Louise Friery of Houston, TX and Betty Ann Friery Kent of Beaver, WV; son-in-law Frank N. Kent; grandson Thomas Gregory Kent and his wife Barbara; granddaughter Stacey LeAnn Kent; great-grandson Nathaniel Gregory Kent; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Tom E. Friery, in 1967; her parents, Elizabeth and William Amos Fetterly; her brother, William Amos Fetterly, Jr.; and her sister Ida Louise Anderson.

LANNIE RAY GILLETTE
Funeral services for Lannie Ray Gillette, 69, of Palacios, TX, were held Aug. 21, 2007 at the First Baptist Church of Palacios with Rev. Dave Gruhn officiating. Interment was at Hawley cemetery.
Mr. Gillette was born Sept. 5, 1937 in Orange County, TX, to the late John Ferris Gillette and Elsie Mae Williams Gillette. He died Aug. 17, 2007 in Victoria, Tx.
He was raised in Palacios by his grandparents Emmanuel and Palma Gillette. In 1956 he graduated from Palacios High School and in 1962 graduated from Lamar University with a BS in Electrical Engineering. He retired after 26 years from DuPont and 10 years from Degussa Corporation.
Lannie served for the past three years in the First Baptist Church of Palacios as Deacon, choir member, gospel quartet member and teacher of The Truth Seekers Sunday School class. He loved golfing, fishing and spending time with his kids and grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife Ruth Ann Gillette of Palacios; daughters Sharon Lynn Stewart and husband Ruston of Seabrook, TX and Shelly Jean Gillette of Memphis, TN; son Steven Ray Gillette and wife Stephanie of Driftwood, TX; grandchildren Jenna Stewart, Jalynn Stewart, Jack Gillette, Lucie Gillette, and Lincoln Gillette; sister Glenda Johnson of Murfreesboro, TN; and brother Gary Berry of Acworth, GA.
Pallbearers were Steven Gillette, Ruston Stewart, Bobby Beresford, Edward Gillett, John Brewer, Donald Eastham, James Jackson, and Charlie Michalik. Honorary Pallbearers will be members of The Truth Seekers class.

RUBY SANDERS PENLAND
Funeral services for Ruby Sanders Penland, 71, of Palacios, were held Aug. 15, 2007 at the Palacios Funeral Home with Rev. John Sanders officiating. Interment was at Hawley cemetery.
Mrs. Penland was born July 14, 1936 in Palacios to the late Robert and Daisy Mae Scott Sanders. She passed away Aug. 12, 2007.
She was a legal secretary for Eli Mayfield for many years and later worked for the Trull Foundation and in banking.
She is survived by her daughter Sharon Paulette Penland of Palacios; son Ronald Keith Penland of Palacios, sister Jessie Sanders Hairston of Houston; brothers Robert Franklin Sanders of Palacios and Ronald Dean Sanders of Katy; eight grandchildren Tiffany Mooney, Kimberly Ficarra, Paula Penland, Kelli Divers, Aaron Rodriguez, Christopher and Josh Clifton and Paul Michael Penland; 11 great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband Paul Mitchell Penland; daughter Denise Dawn Clifton and son Paul Mitchell Penland, Jr.
Pallbearers were Michael Penland, Christopher Clifton, Josh Clifton, John Mark Hafernick, Rocky Sheffield and Gary Hafernick.

WILLIAM JOSEPH “BILL” LOWMAN
A Memorial service for William Joseph “Bill” Lowman, 81, of Palacios, were held Aug. 12, 2007 at the First Baptist Church in Palacios, Tx.
Mr. Lowman passed away at home Aug. 7, 2007.
He was a faithful husband for over 61 years, a wonderful father, grandfather and great-grandfather as well as a friend to everyone who knew him. At age 18, he was sent to the front lines in Germany where he became a decorated World War II hero and survived the Battle of the Bulge. He was truly one of the “Band of Brothers”.
When he returned from the War, he married
his true love, Bonnie Lou Wright. As a highway contractor, he built over 100 State of Texas highways and built roads in the West Indies as well as South America. He had a wonderful long life and a million wonderful experiences. He was very proud of his father and mother, Dr. and Mrs. Harmon Luther Lowman, long-time president of Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, Tx.
He is survived by his wife, Bonnie; daughters Becky Meador and Blynda and David Barker; son William J. Lowman II and his wife Racheal; and his much loved grandchildren and great-grandsons Meagan and Richard Meador, Jason, Kelly and Grant Hammons and Jake, Tisha and Wyatt Hammons.
He was preceded in death by his grandsons, Joseph and William Meador.

TANYA LYNN CHANIK
Tanya Lynn Chanik, 36, of Palacios, Tx. passed away peacefully Aug. 10, 2007 in Bay City, TX. Memorial services will be planned at a later time and notice posted in the Palacios Beacon.
Tanya was born Jan. 3, 1971 in Rosenberg, TX.
Tanya is survived by her mother, Beverly Smith-Garcia and “Dad” Glenn Garcia of Palacios; brother, James W. Chanik; and step-sisters Christi and Chelsea Garcia; and numerous aunts and uncles, nieces, nephews and lots of friends.
She was preceded in death by her grandfather, Jimmie Smith, and grandmother, Betty Smith, and they greeted her at Heaven’s gate.

JIMMIE L. SMITH
Jimmie L. Smith, 80, a native Palacian, passed away peacefully Aug. 7, 2007 at the VA Hospital in Kerrville, Tx.
Jimmie was born June 29, 1927 in Palacios, Tx. to the late Arthur and Esther Smith. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, a Shriner-Mason, and he was most proud to be a Navy Veteran.
Jimmie is survived by two daughters, Beverly Smith-Garcia and Cynthia Reese and their husbands, Glenn Garcia and Doug Reese; grandchildren James and Tanya Chanik and William, Gene, Jessica, and Haley Reese; his sister, Mrs. Colleen Jones of Henderson, Nevada; nieces and nephews, step-grandchildren and great-grandchildren, plus a host of friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Betty Jo Smith.
The family wishes to thank the VA Hospital in Kerrville’s staff, Dr’s, Chaplin, and Hospice for their loving care, support and for their compassion.
