MINH QUANG NGUYEN
Funeral services for Minh Quang Nguyen, 98, of Palacios were held March 10, 2007 at at St. Anthony of Padua Vietnamese Apostolate Church with Rev. Joe Pham officiating. Interment was at Palacios Cementery.
Mr. Nguyen was born Feb.12, 1909 in Vietnam to Huong Van Nguyen and Huong Thi Nguyen. He died March 7, 2007.
He had been a resident of Palacios for 16 years.
He is survived by his wife Vat Thi Tran of Palacios; daughters Yen Hoang Nguyen of Palacios, Van Thuy Nguyen of Victoria, Nu Nguyen of Ohio, Sang Nguyen, Hong Nguyen, Hoa Nguyen, Men Nguyen, and Lan Nguyen all of California, and Loan Nguyen of Vietnam; sons Tien Quang Nguyen of Houston, Tan Nguyen of Boston, and An Nguyen and Thai Nguyen both of California; 31 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

JOE ALVAREZ MARTINEZ
Funeral services Joe Alvarez Martinez, 54, of Palacios, were held March 1, 2007 at The Living Word Church with the Rev. Tony Flores officiating. Interment was at Palacios cemetery.
Mr. Martinez was born in Bastrop on Nov. 7, 1952 to the late Julian Lozano Martinez and Juanita Alvarez Martinez Garcia. He died Feb. 25, 2007.
He is survived by his stepfather, Francisco “Pancho” Garcia of Palacios; four sisters, Petra Ochoa of Edna, Domingo Alaniz and Gloria Martinez both of Palacios and Benita Moreno of Houston; two brothers, John Martinez of Palacios and Angelo Martinez of High Point, N. C.; six nieces, Patricia Ochoa and Delores Rodriguez both of Edna, and Raquel Eufracio, Vanessa Eufracio, Cristal Martell and Nicki Le, all of Palacios; and five nephews, Larry Moreno Jr. of Hawaii, Matthew Moreno of Dallas, William Moreno of Killeen, David Alaniz Jr. of Texas City and Ernest Alaniz of Palacios.
He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Joe and Lorena Lozano Martinez; maternal grandparents, Benito and Matilda Arce Alvarez; and two sisters, Annette Martinez Long and Gracie Martinez.
Pallbearers were Robert Rocha, Matthew Moreno, Larry Moreno Jr., David Alaniz Jr., Ernest Alaniz and David “Trey” Alaniz III. Honorary pallbearer was Francisco Rodriguez
Arrangements were with Artero Memorial Chapels of Port Lavaca.
BOB WAYNE HUBENAK
Funeral services for Bob Wayne Hubenak, 61, of Tidewater Oaks, formerly of El Campo, were held March 1, 2007 at Triska Funeral Home with the Rev. Gary Janak officiating. Interment was at Holy Cross Memorial Park with full military honors under the auspices of Blessing American Legion.
Mr. Hubenak was born May 9, 1945 in El Campo to the late Robert and Josie Nitsche Hubenak. He died Feb. 26, 2007.
He was a control operator for Alcoa-Point Comfort, retiring in 2000. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in Vietnam where he earned a Purple Heart Medal. He was a member of the Blessing American Legion and a lifetime member of VFW.
He is survived by his wife, Sue Ann Mitchell Hubenak of Palacios; daughters Rebecca Hubenak-Harness and husband Kent of Austin, and Judy Perry and husband James of El Campo; grandchildren Nathan and Ethan Harness and Kalynn Perry; brothers Bennie Hubenak of Ariz., Lawrence Hubenak of Ark., Daniel Hubenak of El Campo, Leon Hubenak of Freeport and Leonard Hubenak of El Campo; and sisters, Betty Lou Urbanovsky of Schulenburg, Beatrice Olsovsky of Victoria and Linda Schilhab of El Campo.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Gene Hubenak; a sister, Dorothy Cormier; and a granddaughter, Jacie Perry.
Pallbearers were his nephews. Memorial donations may be made to American Cancer Society or donor’s choice.
AMALIA "MOLLY" SONKA MITCHELL
Funeral services for Amalia "Molly" Sonka Mitchell, 77, were held Feb. 22, 2007 at First Christian Church in El Campo. Interment was at Hawley cemetery near Blessing.
Mrs. Mitchell was born March 9, 1928 to immigrant parents Julianna Schmid Sonka and Josef W. Sonka. She died Feb. 18, 2007 in Victoria.
Her life was lived to the fullest in Matagorda County. Molly B. and Lefty owned several businesses in Bay City throughout their 37-years together. She was a woman of many talents and diverse interests, having worn many hats, from rodeos to truck driving. Molly lived her life with gusto, strength and knowledge. She stepped beyond the typical female boundaries. She could overhaul a motor, run a trot line, and hunted and shot pool with the best of them. An avid camper and storyteller, she enjoyed competing in local BBQ cookoffs with her long time companion Slim Hassel, often winning for her beans.
She was preceded in death by her husbands Norman Galle, Sr. and W.J. "Lefty" Mitchell; son Normal H. Galle, Jr.; sisters Julia Pearson, Henrietta Glick and Maggie Krohn and her brothers Emil, Joe, Odie and Carl Sonka.
She is survived by her sister Mary Williams of Las Vegas, NV, and her children, daughter Kathryn and husband Jimmy Cockroft of Burton and her son L.W. "Buster" and wife Carolyn Mitchell of Glen Flora, Texas. She leaves behind her grandchildren and great-grandchildren: Todd Galle and children Jacob and Jordan of Seguin; Bart and Jen Galle and daughters Savannah, Abigail and Natalie of Luling; Sean and Jenny Galle of Austin; Tommy and Melina Cockroft and son Case of Rosharon; Clint and Laura Mitchell and daughter Alexandra of San Antonio; Wade Mitchell and her only granddaughter Keely Mitchell of Glen Flora.
DOVIE LEE HEJTMANEK
Funeral services for Dovie Lee Hejtmanek, 76, of Ashby were held at First Presbyterian Church in Bay City on Feb. 8, 2007 with Reverends Andy and Janell Blair officiating. Interment followed at Ashby cemetery.
Mrs. Hejtmanek was born Jan. 2, 1931 in Markham and lived in the Ashby area all her life. She passed away peacefully in her home Feb. 6, 2007.
Along with her three sisters, Dovie was raised by her beloved father Gene during tough times. She grew up in Ashby, graduated from Blessing High School in 1948, and married
George Hejtmanek on June 22, 1948. They built a good life farming and raised a happy and close-knit family. She was well known for her tenacious spirit in dealing with kidney disease for most of her adult life, and never let it hold her back from hosting four generations of her family for the holidays. Her beautiful smile will never be forgotten by the many people who love her.
She is survived by her husband of 58 years, George Hejtmanek of Ashby, children George Hejtmanek, Jr. and wife Barbara of Houston, Ronald Hejtmanek and wife Beverly of Austin, and Cheryl Horne and husband Michael of Sugar Land, grandchildren Erin Althaus, Jennifer Kriskey, Steven, Rachel, Russell, and Randall Hejtmanek, Meagan and Michael Horne, great-grandchildren, Preston and Emerson Althaus, and Abigail Kriskey. She is also survived by her half-brother Herbert Legg, Jr.
She was preceded in death by her parents Eugene Spoor and Ethel Legg, sisters Jeannine Vaut, Elaine Winn, and Marilyn Chambless. She was also preceded in death by her grandchildren Christopher and Matthew Hejtmanek.
Pallbearers were Brian Althaus, Steven Hejtmanek, Glenn Jurek, Russell Corporon, Louis Hejtmanek & Paul Vaut. Honorary pallbearers were Erin Althaus, Jennifer & Thomas Kriskey, Rachel, Russell & Randall Hejtmanek, Meagan & Michael Horne, and Erin, Emily & Mary Rochford.

MARY JANE HOLLOWAY
Funeral services for Mary Jane Holloway, 72, of Francitas were held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 13, 2007 at the Palacios Funeral home with Bro. Shan Jackson officiating. Interment followed at the Francitas cemetery.
Mrs. Holloway was born Nov. 22, 1934 to the late John Martin and Mable May Smith Schillings. She died Feb. 10, 2007.
She was a former longtime resident of Palacios and a member of the Church of Christ.
Mrs. Holloway is survived by her husband, Lloyd Holloway of Francitas; daughter Mable May Eggemeyer of Palacios; son Lloyd Holloway Jr. of Sandia; sisters Dorothy Ann Kraiser of Port Lavaca and Wanda Matura of Collegeport; 10 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her daughters Mary Ann Anderson and Kathy Ann Holloway Loff.
Arrangements are with Palacios Funeral Home.
JOYCE LUCILLE KIDD MATHIS DAWSON
Funeral services for Joyce Lucille Kidd Mathis Dawson, 85, formerly of Palacios, were held Feb. 10, 2007 at the Lloyd James Funeral Home in Tyler, TX. Interment was at the Whitehouse Memorial cemetery at Whitehouse, TX.
Mrs. Dawson was born Nov. 8, 1921 in Palacios to James Curtis and Sallie Dianna Burns Kidd. She died Feb. 8, 2007.
She attended Palacios schools, married
and moved to Houston and raised four children with the help of her husband. With two sons in Vietnam and another with an extreme illness, she gave credit to God for giving her the strength to live her life with honesty, kindness and integrity, qualities that endeared her to those around her throughout her life.
Mrs. Dawson is survived by her husband of 63-1/2 years, Walter Reiffert Dawson; four children, Walter Leonard Mathis and wife Doris of Whitehouse; David Marlin Dawson of Bay City; Bobby Ross Dawson and wife Shirley of Splendora and Linda Lucille Dawson McMillan and husband Bill of Hot Springs, AK; eight grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren with one more on the way.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Henry Mathis, her parents, brother James Burns Kidd, sister Lois Louise Kidd White and grandson Matthew Fain McMillan.
Pallbearers were her grandsons and the husbands of her granddaughters.
NITA JEAN PAGE
Memorial services for Nita Jean Page, 75 of Palacios, will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 8, 2007 at the First Presbyterian Church in Palacios with Revs. Andy Blair and Janell Blair officiating.
She was born Nov. 26, 1931 in Del Rio, Tx. to the late William and Anita Koeler Herzing. She died Feb. 3, 2007.
She was a resident of Palacios since 1983.
She is survived by her husband, Hugh M. Page of Palacios. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Rhonda Annette Page; a son, Alan Earl Page; her parents: William and Anita Herzing; and a sister, Alice Ann Sankey.
