Funeral services for Zaragoza Gonsalez Salinas, 92, of Palacios were held Oct. 3, 2005 at St. Anthony's Catholic Church with Rev. Charles Dwomoh officiating. Interment was at Palacios cemetery. He was born August 17, 1913 in Benavidas, TX to Mauricio Gonsalez Salinas and Bartola Gonsalez Salinas. He died Oct. 1, 2005. He was a resident of Palacios since 1936, a member of St. Anthony's Catholic Church and a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He is survived by his wife Maria Salinas of Palacios; daughter Mary Ann Zuniga of Santa Fe; sons Alvin M. Salinas of Bay City and James Edward Salinas of San Antonio; sister Nieves Salinas Samora of Richmond; brother Mauricio Salinas of Palacios; 11 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife: Bernice Leach Salinas; by his sons Zaragoza G. "Charlie" Salinas, Jr. and Christopher Salinas; sisters Maria Trevino and Frances Cunningham; brothers Jesus "Red" Salinas, Santos Salinas and Jose Salinas; 5 infant siblings; and grandson Robert Carlos Salinas. Pallbearers were Fernando Aguilar, Jr., Juan Aguilar, Antonio Chavez, Justin Hargett, William Hargett, Edward Salinas, and Mark Salinas. Arrangements were with Palacios Funeral Home.
JEAN H. KENNEDY
Jean H. Kennedy, 90, died Sept. 24, 2005 at her residence in Indianapolis. She was a former resident of Palacios, TX and Philadelphia, PA. Mrs. Kennedy was born on April 18, 1915 in Philadelphia, PA to Edward and Anna (Behl) Mulvihill. She was a homemaker and a member of St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Palacios, TX. Mrs. Kennedy loved to read and play bingo. Survivors include: sons: Patrick J. Walsh of Warrington, PA and Edward Walsh of Ft. Worth, TX; daughter, Kathleen M. Price of Indianapolis; nine grandchildren, fourteen great grandchildren and six great great grandchildren. Mrs. Kennedy was preceded in death by her husbands, Patrick J. Walsh and Robert T. Kennedy; son, Robert B. Kennedy and brother, Edward H. Mulvihill A memorial mass will be held at a later date and burial will take place in Pennsylvania. Arrangements have been entrusted to The Cremation Society of Indiana.
H. B. HOWARD
Funeral services for H. B. Howard, 96, of Palacios, were held Sept. 20, 2005 at Palacios Funeral Home Chapel. Interment was at Midfield cemetery. Mr. Howard was born Feb. 24, 1909 in Goose Rock, Clay Co., KY to the late Jesse and Elizabeth Asher Howard. He died Sept. 17, 2005 at his residence. He was a resident of Palacios the past 10 years, a former resident of Point Comfort, and Mexia, TX, and was a member of the Point Comfort Assembly Of God Church. He was the owner and operator of the Howard Oil Company in Mexia, TX. He is survived by daughter-in-law Gerry Howard of Palacios; brothers E. C. Howard of Okmulgee, OK and Caleb Howard of Kansas City, MO; grandchildren Thomas Dale, Stephen Lynn, Randall Dale, and Charles Alfred Howard, Teresa Carter, Nancy Lee and Patricia Howard; 14 great-grandchildren, and five great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife of 75 years Hazel Howard in October 2003; sons Kenneth Dale and Charles Alfred Howard; sisters Ophie Morgan, Alice Markley, Florence Fisher, and Laura Bowling; and brothers: Israel, John, Lee, and Daw William Howard. Pallbearers were Thomas Dale, Randall, and Kenneth Howard, David Roberts, Jonathan Lee, and Charles Alfred Howard, Jr. Memorials may be made to the First Assembly of God Church of Point Comfort, TX. CLARENCE TOLLESON
Clarence 'Sam' Tolleson, 75, of Palacios, died Sept. 16, 2005. Following cremation, a memorial service will be held from 2-4 p.m. Oct. 9 at the Blessing Community Center. Mr. Tolleson was born July 12, 1930 in Palacios to the late Thomas Argyle and Lucy Ophelia Norris Tolleson. He was in the Navy from 1948-51, serving in the Korean War. He retired from Alcoa and was a heavy crane operator overseas and at the South Texas Nuclear Project. He is survived by his wife, Marlene Tolleson; daughters Lisa Perez of Ganado and Kim Kieler of Wharton; stepdaughter Sandy Williams of Blessing; son Jeffrey Tolleson of Blessing; stepson James Williams of Blessing; sisters Bobbie Brune and Carolyn Mertz of Palacios; brother Billy Tolleson of Camp Wood; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.
ERNETTE C. SANFORD
Funeral services for Ernette C. Sanford, 89, of Palacios, were held Sept. 17, 2005 at the First United Methodist Church in Palacios with Rev's Ray Wells and Clint Harris officiating. Interment was at Palacios cemetery. Mrs. Sanford was born on Oct. 16, 1915 in Natchitoches, LA to the late Ernest Franklin and Olah Case Courtney. She died Sept. 15, 2005 at her resident. She grew up in Shreveport and graduated from Fair Park High School in 1932 at the age of 16. She then went to Louisiana Tech and graduated in 1936 with a degree in business. She taught school for several years, including one year in Guatemala. In 1941 she moved to Galveston, TX to get her medical technology training. While in school in Galveston she met a medical student, E. B. Sanford. They were married
at the Methodist Temple in Port Arthur on Oct. 17, 1941. The coming of WW II changed their lives drastically. After graduation E. B. joined the US Army Medical Corps, and Ernette moved with him to Des Moines, IA and then to Atlantic City, NJ. In 1946 they settled in Palacios and started a medical practice together on the second story of the old Feather Building on Main Street. She was a teacher, a laboratory technician, and a mother. Mrs. Sanford was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Palacios and a resident of Palacios for 59 years. She also was a former member of the Harmony Club and Wednesday Bridge Club. She is survived by daughter and son-in-law Susan and Rufus Lewis of Rockport, TX; sons and daughters-in-law John and Hope Sanford of Buda, TX, and Charles and Cindy Sanford of Missouri City, TX; and grandchildren Candace Robbins and husband Steve, Nicholas, Samuel, Matthew, Daniel, and John David Sanford. Pallbearers were Ted Bates, Jr., Don Hyett, Samuel, Matthew, Nicholas, and Daniel Sanford. Honorary Pallbearers were Roy Price, Dr. Ed Ferrell, John David Sanford, and Scott Trull. The family would especially like to thank Mary Ann Price, Hope Guerrero, and Linda Contreras for the love, support, and care given to Mrs. Sanford. ROBERT "BOBBY" SCHNEIDER
Funeral services for Robert "Bobby" Schneider, 76, of Palacios, were held Sept. 14, 2005 at the Palacios Funeral Home Chapel. Interment was at Guy Public cemetery in Guy, Tx. Mr. Schneider was born Jan. 12, 1929 in Needville, TX to Robert and Valasta Baca Schneider. He died Sept. 11, 2005 at Gulf Coast Medical Center. A resident of Palacios for 53 years, he was a member of the Alcoa 25 Year Club; the Palacios Trail Riders Association and a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean Conflict. He is survived by his wife, Margaret "Margie" Jakubec Schneider of Palacios; by five sons and four daughters-in-law Robert "Tiger" Schneider, Jr. of Palacios, Randy and Teresa Schneider of Victoria, Russell and Jan Schneider of Palacios, Ray and Darlene Schneider of Bay City and Ronnie and Kelly Schneider of Palacios; a sister, Madelline "Matsy" Schultz of Edna; 15 grandchildren; and 12 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters Willie Mae Horlicia and Noni Stavinoha; and brothers Elo and Alvin Schneider. LIDDIE ZEMANEK PAVELKA
Graveside services for Liddie Zemanek Pavelka, 92, of Dallas, were heldSept. 14, 2005, at Hawley cemetery near Blessing. Mrs. Pavelka was born Jan. 8, 1913 in Guy, Tex. to Josef and Kristina Huff Zemanek. She died Sept. 10, 2005 at her home in Dallas. She is survived by her sisters, Martha Johnston, Sidney Bridewell, brother Joe Zemanek and wife Maurine, Victor's wife, Lydia and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, James, and brother, Victor Zemanek. Liddie was a Sokol Gymnast under her father's instruction for 12 years. She graduated Salutatorian from Blessing High School and later from Shamburger Business College in Dallas. Liddie moved to Dallas at the age of 17. She worked for Louis B. Hosek as secretary and continued her gymnastics instruction. In 1933 she began working for General Electric Lamp Department retiring 30 years later as secretary/ assistant to the District Manager. In 1959, James and Liddie founded Prudential Air Conditioning, Inc., which operated for 12 years. James was President and Liddie was Secretary/Treasurer. They retired at the age of 57 and enjoyed retirement for 26 years. Liddie was a member of Dallas Krouzek Circle of Czech Women for 35 years, Ennis Sewing Circle for 30 years, and Professional Secretary Chapter of Dallas for 48 years. Liddie was an avid reader. She loved flowers and animals. She lived as a spirited, independent, and self¨¢sufficient person. She will be greatly missed, but her love, kindness, and generosity to others will be remembered always. She was at peace her last days and was ready to be with the Lord when He called. She wished to thank everyone for the prayers, cards, phone calls, and visits during her illness. Special thanks to her caregivers: Nieces Linda Waldo and Cathy VandenEykel, brother Joe Zemanek, sister Sidney Bridewell, friend Paul Bilger, and Eunice Denenga. BOBBY JEAN BRADEN
Funeral services for Bobby Jean Braden, 79, of Port Lavaca, were held Sept. 12, 2005 at the First Baptist Church in Port Lavaca with Rev. Mike Gresham officiating. Interment was at Port Lavaca cemetery. Mrs. Braden was born July 29, 1926 in Palacios to the late John W. and Roberta Partain Richards. She died Sept. 9, 2005. Bobby Jean grew up with six brothers and sisters on the main street of Palacios in a house filled with music. As a teenager she worked at Camp Hulen during World War II and was later employed at the bank in Palacios. In 1949 she went to work for Alcoa where she met LeRoy Braden. The married
in 1959 and she became a homemaker and mother of two daughters. Her life was filled with their many travels, good friends, family, music at the First Baptist Church and a strong love for her grandchildren. Those who knew her will always remember a smile on her face. She is survived by her husband, LeRoy Braden; daughters and sons-in-law Robbie and Harry Elrod of Pittsburgh, PA and Kim and Adam Leissner of San Antonio; grandchildren Braden Elrod of Waco, Kevin Elrod and Lauren Elrod of Pittsburgh; step-children Russ Elrod and wife Amy and their daughter Emma of Conway, AR and Ryan Elrod of Austin; brother Joe Richards of El Campo; and sister Ginger McKay of Kerrville. Funeral services for Laura Shake Longoria, 38, of Palacios, were held Sept. 5, 2005 at Agape Family Outreach Church in Palacios with Rev. Eric D. Young officiating. Interment was at Palacios cemetery. Mrs. Longoria was born Feb. 6, 1967, in Palacios, to Barbara Garza Shake of Palacios and to the late Joseph Shake. She died in a car accident Agu. 30, 2005. She was a self-employed wholesale shrimper. She is survived by her husband, Vincent Longoria Sr. of Palacios; daughters Rayni Longoria and Meghan Longoria, both of Palacios; sons Vincent Longoria Jr., Nicholas Longoria, Joseph Longoria, Alec Longoria, and Timothy Longoria, all of Palacios; sisters Jackie Stierwald of Diamond Head, Miss., and Michelle Garza Beemen, of Biloxi, Miss.; and brother Johnny Rodriguez of Palacios. ROBERT WAYNE KILLGORE
Funeral services for Robert Wayne Killgore, 51, of Spring, Tx. were held at Aug. 26, 2005 at Cypress Fairbanks Funeral Home in Houston, with his aunt, La Nita Slaughter, officiating. Mr. Killgore was born July 4, 1954 in Coronado Island, San Diego County, Ca. to Eugene and Doris Killgore. He died Aug. 23, 2005 in his home in Spring. He attended school in Palacios, Tx. Mr. Killgore is survived by his wife of 25 years Deborah Ann Killgore of Spring, Tx.; two daughters Kelly Marie Killgore of Austin and Christa Lynn Killgore of Spring, Tx.; by his mother Doris Killgore Harrison of Palacios; and by one brother Richard Lee Killgore of Sabine Pass, Tx. He was preceded in death by his father and grandparents.
GEORGE SPARKS
Funeral services for George Sparks, 83, of Palacios, were held Aug. 25, 2005 at the First United Methodist Church with Rev. Ray Wells officiating. Interment was at Hawley cemetery near Blessing. Mr. Sparks was born Sept. 26, 1921 in Waco, Tx. to Ernest C. and Jennie West Sparks. He died Aug. 20, 2005. He attended high school in Blanco, TX and graduated from A&M; University with a BA and Masters degrees in Agriculture Education. He taught Agriculture for ten years before becoming a rice farmer and rancher near Palacios in 1958. During World War II he served in the US Army as a First Lt. in the 54th Armored Infantry, 18th Division. On Nov. 27, 1944 his squad was captured by the Germans during the battle at the Siegfried Line. After five months as a P.O.W., he was liberated by the American troops on April 29, 1945. He is survived by his wife of 58 years Beulah Mae (Gunter) Sparks of Palacios; a sister, Mary M. Hickman of Midland; a nephew, Jack Hickman of Midland; nieces Shirley (Gunter) Kelly of Ganado and Joyce (Gunter) Bannerot of Austin; great-niece Rachel Hickman of Midland; great-nephews Travis Rogers of San Diego, CA and Gunter Kelly of Ganado; and sister-in-law Willie M. Simpson of Ganado. Pallbearers will be Gene Allen, Alton Nelsen, Dean Kubecka, Sonny Johs, Joe Ray Beard and John Toellner. Honorary pallbearers are the Palacios Lions Club and United Methodist Men.
