DAVID MARVIN MAHNKE

Funerals services for David Marvin Mahnke, 63, of Cape Carancahua (Palacios) and formerly of Brenham, Tx. were held May 13, 2005 at First Baptist Church in Brenham with Rev. Troy Sikes and Rev. Robert LeBlanc officiated. Interment followed in Prairie Lea cemetery.
He passed away May 4, 2005, together with his wife Carole, while vacationing in Costa Rica.
David was born April 22, 1942 to William M. “Bill” Mahnke and LaVerne (Bartos) Mahnke in Milwaukee, Wis. and graduated from Wisconsin Lutheran High School.
On Aug. 10, 1963 he was united in marriage to Carole Joyce Hemke by Pastor Jeske in Milwaukee, Wis. David was a financial advisor for Texas Financial in Victoria. He was a member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church of Palacios and former member of Brenham Lion’s Club.
He is survived by daughters and sons-in-law, Doreen Marie and David Hughes of Brenham, Darlene Michelle and Eric Stone of Clermont, Fla. and Denise Melanie and Joel Romo of Round Rock; son, David Michael “Mike” Mahnke of Tennessee Colony; grandchildren, Dylan and Dawson Hughes, Emily Stone and Robert, Johnson and Andrew Mueller; sisters and brothers-in-law, Judith and Donald Nimmer of Colgate, Wis., Kathleen and James McDonald of Littleton, Col., Kay and Patrick Wielgush of Greendale, Wis.; brother and sister-in-law, William “Bill” Mahnke and wife Ruth of Oak Creek, Wis.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He preceded in death by his parents William and LaVerne Mahnke.
Pallbearers were Patrick Wielgosh, Pat Wielgosh, Rick Gureski, Kay Wielgosh, Robert Reichwein, Roger Metzger, Trevor Capeheart and Trey Hughes. Honorary pallbearers were his grandchildren and all of the family and friends.
Funeral services for Carole and David were at 1 p.m., Friday, May 13, 2005 at First Baptist Church in Brenham. Rev. Troy Sikes and Rev. Robert LeBlanc officiated. Interment followed in Prairie Lea cemetery.
Memorials may be given to Our Redeemer Lutheran Church of Palacios or Palacios Pet Pals.

GLENN JAY SEDAM

A memorial service for Glenn Jay Sedam, Sr., 88, of Bay City, publisher of The Daily Tribune in Bay City from 1958 to 1981, were held May 7, 2005 at the First Christian Church of Bay City.
Mr. Sedam was born Aug.19, 1916, in Monongahela, PA. to Ica Dora and Earl Jay Sedam. He died May 2, 2005 at Matagorda General Hospital.
He began his newspaper career in the advertising department of his hometown paper, The Monongahela Daily Republican.
He later worked for the McKeesport (PA) Daily News, the Pittsburgh (PA) Press, the Wilmington (NC) Post, the Clarksburg (WV) Exponent and Telegram, and the Gadsden (Ala.) Times before becoming vice-president of Southern Newspapers, Inc.
Mr. Sedam and Southern Newspapers Inc. bought the Matagorda County Tribune, a weekly, and the Daily Tribune from the Carey Smith family March 26, 1958. The Carey Smith family owned and operated the Tribune — Texas’ second oldest newspaper still in operation — for 47 years.
His first edition as publisher was May 1, 1958, and on April 23, 1959, the Daily Tribune and the County Tribune became one paper.
While Tribune publisher, he was named to Who’s Who in the South and Southwest, and was active in both the Texas Press Association (TPA) and the Texas Gulf Coast Press Association. He served both associations as vice-president and president, and was TPA’s chairman of the board 1975-76.
He held leadership roles in many Bay City and Matagorda County organizations, including serving as president of the United Way for two years, chairman of the Salvation Army for five years, president of the Matagorda Council for Retarded Citizens for two years, chairman of the parks and recreation board for five years and president of the Matagorda County Community Concert Association for 10 years.
Mr. Sedam was a past member of the Bay City Chamber of Commerce board of directors and served on both the Bay City Home Rule Charter Commission and the Industrial Foundation Board. He was a member of the Red Cross board of directors and Little League board of directors. He also served as a member of Texas Christian University’s Advisory Board and the Advisory Board of the University of Texas School of Communication.
Active in the First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Bay City, he also served in the church’s district, state, and international offices.
He is survived by his daughters Linda Sedam McCulloch of Williamsport, PA., and Dr. Cynthia Sedam of Fort Worth, TX.; his son, Tommy Sedam Sr. and wife Jodie of Brownwood, TX.; daughter-in-law Charlotte Sedam of Warrenton, VA.; grandchildren, Glenn Jay Sedam III and wife Elizabeth of Charlotte, NC., Kathryn Lamonia and husband Todd of Marshall, VA., Christina Sedam of Charleston, SC., John Sedam of Warrenton, VA., Tommy Sedam Jr., of Bay City, David Sedam of Houston, Leigh Ann Sedam of Austin, Henry Sedam of Houston, and Douglas McCulloch of Williamsport, PA; great-grandchildren, Glenn Jay IV and Kristen Sedam of Charlotte, NC, and Ryan and Erin Sedam of Mineral Wells, TX.; five stepchildren and several step-grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 48 years, Dorothy Gillingham Sedam; his wife of 17 years, Nora Lee Cox Sedam; his eldest son, Glenn Jay Sedam Jr.; and siblings Erma Jane Sedam McCully, Dorothy Sedam Comin and James Earl Sedam.
For the past six years, Mr. Sedam has lived at The Legacy in Bay City.Donations in his memory may be made to the Glenn Jay Sedam Memorial Fund at First Christian Church or to The Activity Department at the Legacy.

KATIE WELLS MILLER

Graveside services for Katie Wells Miller, 89, of Victoria, were held May 5, 2005 at Hawley cemetery near Blessing with Rev. John Fisher and Mr. Virgil Martin officiating.Mrs. Miller was born July 31, 1915 in Midway, Tx to the late John E. and Ada Christian Ivie Wells. She died May 2, 2005.
A homemaker, Mrs. Miller was also a member of Burnet Art Club and earned several awards for art.
She is survived by her daughter, Peggy Miller Gayle of Victoria; sisters Sybil Nichols of College Station, Tx., Edith Joice of Tow, Tx., Tempie Green of Riverside, Tx., and Maxine Harkins of Kerrville, Tx.; a brother, Jack Wells of Houston, Tx.; three grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

KATHALENE SMITH

Funeral services for Kathalene Smith, 76, of Palacios, were held May 4, 2005 at the First Baptist Church in Palacios. Interment was at Hawley cemetery near Blessing.
Mrs. Smith was born July 27, 1928 in Okmulgee, Oklahoma to Ted R. Tudor and Verba Margaret Ingram Tudor. She died April 29, 2005 at The Methodist Hospital in Houston.
She had been a resident of Palacios since 1953 and was a member of the First Baptist Church.
She is survived by her husband of 52 years, Leon Smith of Palacios; daughters and sons-in-law Ann and Delbert Dannels of Bay City, Cathy and Bruce Shearin of Rocky Mount, North Carolina, Margaret Smith of Palacios, and Terry and David Brooks of Victoria; grandchildren David Dannels, Dennis Dannels, Christa Haynie, Travis Schulte, Callie Dixon, Dee-Ann King, Leon Falks, Kristan Harr, Kathalene Brooks and Emily Brooks; and great grandchildren, Elizabeth Dannels, Melody Dannels, Emma Haynie, Sydney Haynie, and Wyatt Evans.

ANNIE MARIE TOLLESON

Funeral services for Annie Marie Tolleson, 75, of Camp Wood Hills, Tx. were held April 20, 2005 at Camp Wood Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Carroll Vernor officiating. Interment was at the Tolleson Homestead in Camp Wood Hills. Mrs. Tolleson was born Dec. 8, 1929 in West Sinton, Tx. to the late Foster Vernon Hale and Myrtle Mae Brown Hale. She died April 16, 2005 at her residence. She married Charles A. "Bill" Tolleson on Jan. 10, 1948, in Aransas Pass, Tx. She was employed as a cashier in both Camp Wood and Aransas Pass for many years before retirement. According to family members, she never met a stranger and was loved by her very large family and numerous friends. She will be greatly missed. She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Charles A. "Bill" Tolleson; daughters Lucy Mae Frandolig of Aransas Pass and Linda Kay Couk of Three Rivers, Tx.; sons Charles A. "Buster" Tolleson Jr. of La Porte, Tx., Thomas "Tommy" Tolleson of Turpin, Okla., Ricky "Peanut" Tolleson and wife, Sylvia, of Beeville, Tx. and Billy Don Tolleson and Joe Tolleson and wife, Sandi, all of Camp Wood, Tx.; brothers, Orville "Bunky" Hale and wife, Dean, of Aransas Pass, J. D. "Witt" Hale of Ingleside, and Wendel Hale and wife, Darlene, of Rockport; sister Dollie Francis of Aransas Pass; sister-in-laws, Carolyn Tolleson and M.E. Mertz, C.L. "Sam" Tolleson, and Bobbie Tolleson Brune all of Palacios; nephews Kenny and Donna Brune, Keith and Donna Brune, Robert Wayne Brune and Jeffrey Tolleson; nieces Kim Tolleson Kieler and Lisa Tolleson Kieler all of Palacios; 23 grand-children; and 30 great-grandchildren. JOSEPH "JOE" RAY SHURLEY

Funeral services for Joseph 'Joe' Ray Shurley, 38, of Palacios, were held April 16, 2005 at Palacios Funeral Home with Rev. Charles Dwomoh officiating. Private interment will be at a later date. Mr. Shurley was born Nov. 27, 1966 in Westminister, CA to Alvie Ray and Freda Christine Hillman Shurley. He died April 12, 2005 at DeTar Hospital in Victoria. Joe had been a resident of Palacios since 1994. He is survived by his mother, 'Frit' Clark of Palacios; sister and brother-in-law Beth and John Purtee of Palacios; uncles Charles Hillman and wife Ruth, Hanx Hillman and wife Joann; aunts Margie McClure, Linda Miller and husband Danny, Evelyn Rose, Joan Fabrizio, Audrey Leese, Patricia Todd and Carol Mendicino and husband Alissio; niece Janet Hodge of Palacios; nephew John Purtee, III of Palacios; great-niece Skyleigh Hodge of Palacios; and several cousins. He was preceded in death by his father, Alvie Ray Shurley. Arrangements were with Palacios Funeral Home.

ROBERT BURNS RAY

Funeral services for Robert Burns Ray, 76, of Symsonia, KY, were held April 14, 2005 at Collier Funeral Chapel with Dr. Jack Acree and Rev. Rick Miller officiating. Interment was at Sardis cemetery in Land Between the Lakes, KY. Mr. Ray was born January 2, 1929 in Lyon, KY to the late Cordie Lee Ray and Lona Ray. He died April 9, 2005. A retired civil engineer, and a construction superintendent, Mr. Ray was also a member of Symsonia Baptist Church. He is survived by a daughter, Lona Ray Adams of Fairfield, CA., two sons, Cordie Lee Ray of Palacios, and Bryan Ray of Ocala, FL.; a brother, Russell Ray of Kuttawa, KY.; a sister, Alsace Fralicx of Benton, KY.; a close friend, Mary Forbes of Symsonia, KY.; five grandchildren, Matthew Adams and Andrew Adams, of Fairfield, CA., Shyla Ray of Sherman, Tx., Jordan Jane Ray and John Patrick Ray of Ocala, FL.; one great-grandchild, Aidan Matthew Adams of Fairfield, CA.; and several nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his wife, Rebecca Jane Ray; brother Homer Ray; sister Louise Gordon; father Cordie Lee Ray and his mother Lona Ray.

ELIZABETH McENTIRE VACEK

A Rosary will be recited for Elizabeth McEntire Vacek, 85, of Bay City and formerly of Palacios, will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 12, 2005 at Palacios Funeral Home Chapel. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Anthony's Catholic Church with the Rev. Charles Dwomoh officiating. Interment will be at Palacios cemetery. Mrs. Vacek was born Sept. 19, 1919, in El Campo, to the late Adolph and Anna Simicek Heinrich. She died April 9, 2005. She was a member of St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Palacios. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Betty and James Vacek, Sr. of Palacios; son and daughter-in-law Robert Neal and Martha McEntire, Jr. of Palacios; sister, Ethel Gavranovic of Wharton; grandchildren James Vacek, Jr. and Gary Vacek both of Palacios, Dianna Warn of Midfield, Tx., Kathy Rush of Alvin, Tx., Lorie Crawford of Hutto, Tx., Jennie Frenzel and Heather McEntire of Palacios; 11 great-grandchildren; and three stepgreat-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by sisters Mary Bohuslav, Millie Kutach, Annie Kutach, and Molly Zickhurall; and brothers John Heinrich, Louie Heinrich, and Louie Heinrich II. RUBY SMITH

Funeral services for Ruby Smith, 90, of Palacios, were held April 8, 2005 at First Baptist Church in Palacios with the Rev. Robert Hairston officiating. Interment was at Lafayette Memorial Park cemetery in Lafayette, La. Mrs. Smith was born Aug. 7, 1914, in Hindsville, Ark., to the late Leroy and Ruth Elizabeth Standton Sanders. She died April 6, 2005. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Palacios, a resident of Palacios for the past 17 years, and a former longtime resident of Lafayette, La. She is survived by daughters and sons-in-law Donnie E. and Winfrey Horton of Palacios, Tx., Mary L. and Ben Lovell of Fredericksburg, Tx., and Cecelia C. and Douglas Walsh of Athens, Tx.; sons and daughters-in-law W. David and Patsy Smith and Sterling Howard and Carolyn Smith, both of Amite, La.; 11 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Cecil C. Smith; daughter Joan Meyer; sister Reba Sanders; and brothers Ralph Sanders and Rex Sanders. Pallbearers were her grandsons David, Douglas and Dennis Meyter, Steven and Rev. Allen Lovell, Judson Walsh and Mark, Matthew and Michael Smith. Arrangements were with Palacios Funeral Home.

MARGARET RUTH BOLLING McCARY

Margaret Ruth Bolling McCary died at the age of 94 on March 29, 2005 in San Antonio. She was born at home on the family ranch on the Carancahua River in Jackson County, Texas on Nov. 9, 1910 to Amanda Ruth Jamerson Bolling and JohnWilliam Bolling. She lived an ideal life on the ranch and at age 7 the family moved into nearby Palacios, Tx. so the children could attend school. She graduated from Palacios High School in 1928 and attended the University of Texas in Austin for three years. While there she met Augustus O'Brien McCary. She and O'Brien were married on June 5, 1934 at the Palacios First Presbyterian Church just before his senior year in medical school in Galveston. In 1938 they moved to Freeport where their daughter, Kathleen, was born and where O'Brien began practicing medicine. Dining the next 50-plus years in the Brazosport area Margaret actively participated in church, garden club and medical auxiliary activities. After her husband's retirement they moved to Salt Lake City, UT to be near their daughter and grandchildren. Her husband died July 25, 1997. She had recently moved to San Antonio to be again nearer family. At the time of her death she was a member of Wasatch Presbyterian Church in Salt Lake City. She is predeceased by her parents and siblings Mary Eugenia Bolling Cunningham, John William Bolling, Jr. and David Randolph Bolling. She is survived and will be greatly missed by her only daughter, Kathleen McCary MeCloskey, and son-in-law, James A. MoCloskey, and their children, Lydia (Philip Hampton) and children, Ciara and Conor, James A (Gus) III (Hisayo) and children, Asako, Meiko and Manabu; Madeline; and Alexander O'Brien (Shannon) and daughter, Rebecca. Numerous nephews, nieces and cousins will remember her with love and gratitude. She will be remembered by her family and longtime friends for her sense of humor, her keen attention to detail, her generosity and kindness, and her unconditional love. At this time no service is scheduled, however graveside services will be held at a future date in the Edna cemetery, Edna, Tx. NATHAN D. LINTON

Funeral services for Nathan D. Linton, 86, (CFGC Retired US Navy) were held March 30, 2005 at Palacios Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Shan Jackson officiating. Interment was at Hawley cemetery near Blessing. Mr. Linton was born June 23, 1918 to Willie L. Linton and Addie Joines Linton at LaWard, TX. He went to Etneral Rest on March 27, 2005. Nathan's faith in the Lord never left him even though he suffered greatly. He was added to the Church of Christ at an early age and was a member of the Church of Christ of Mart, TX. He was a former member of the Palacios Church of Christ. He married Edith Elsie Clapp on May 31, 1939. Nathan was a veteran of World War II and the Korean War. He served aboard the U.S.S. Chester in the Pacific, all during World War II. He participated in many battles and bombardments while aboard the U.S.S. Chester. He served aboard U.S.S. Princeton during the Korean War. He received many medals for his service on the U.S.S. Chester and the U.S.S. Princeton. Later, he served aboard the U.S.S. Chemong and the U.S.S. John R. Craig. He taught school at Treasure Island, CA and at the Receiving Station at Washington, DC. He retired after almost 21 years in the US Navy and remained in the Inactive Reserve for almost 10 years. After retiring from the navy, he attended college at Southwest Texas University at San Marcos. He obtained a B.S. degree in Math and English and later a M.S. degree in Administration and Math. He also attended college at the University of Houston, in Math on a stipend. He taught Math at Palacios High School, Blinn College, Calhoun High School at Port Lavaca and Palacios Jr. High. After retiring from teaching, he and his wife, Edith, bought land at Elk, TX; had a house built; established a small ranch and raised Hereford cattle. He enjoyed ranch life until his health failed. Cancer took his life. Nathan is survived by his wife of almost 66 years, Edith Linton; by his children: Gerald W. Linton and wife Beverlay of Elk, Ronald A. Linton of Elk, and Sandra Linton Dullnig and husband Robert of Garland; by his grandchildren: Krystal Liske and husband Don of Killeen, Kimberlay Pavlik and husband John of Forth Carson, CO, Ronald A. Linton, Jr. of Houston, Melissa Linton Janda and husband Martin of Houston, Robby Dullnig of Sherman, and Nathan Dullnig of Garland; and by his great grandchildren: Daryelle Curtis of Elk, Christopher and Kevin Richards of Fort Carson, CO and Corbin Linton of Houston. He is also survived by his brothers: Cecil Linton and wife Jean of Needham, MA and Robert Linton and wife Margaret of Kingsville; and his sisters: Thelma Young of Hallsville and Flossie Puckett of Beeville. Nathan was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers : R. V. and K. C. Linton; his sister: Erie Nieusas; his grandson: Gerald Morgan Linton; his granddaughter, Jimmie Edith Linton; and his great-Grandson: James Richards. THOMAS ALLEN SANDERS

Funeral services for Thomas Allen Sanders, 74, of Palestine, Tx., were held March 28, 2005 at the Palacios Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor John Sanders officiating. Interment was at Palacios cemetery. Mr. Sanders was born May 23, 1930 in Bayou La Batre, AL to the late Robert Allen and Daisy Mae Scott Sanders. He died March 23, 2005. He was a resident of Palestine for the past 10 years and was a former longtime resident of the Blessing and Palacios area. He retired from the U. S. Navy after 20 years, having served in the Korean and Viet Nam wars. He was a member of the Palacios Queen-Hamlin VFW Post #2467 and the Blessing Cecil Lee American Legion Post #649. He is survived by daughters and sons-in-law Peggy and Gary Hafernick of Palacios, Doreen and Mitch Edwards of Slocum, Tx., Tommie and David Harris of Elkhart, Tx., and Gina Ellis of Palacios; son and daughter-in-law John and Denise Sanders of Pascagoula, MS; stepdaughters and husbands Bonnie and Kenneth Nelson, and Belinda and Larry Guenther of Columbus, Tx.; grandchildren G. J., Dustin and John Mark Hafernick all of Palacios, Savannah Sanders of Glenrose, Tx., Mitchell and Stephanie Edwards of Slocum, Tx., April, Ashley, Joshua, Jacob, Josiah, Audrey and Jeremiah Sanders all of Pascagoula, MS, and Ashley Ellis and Halie Gillett both of Palacios; sisters Jessie Hairston of Houston and Ruby Penland of Palacios; brothers Frank Sanders of Palacios and Ronald Sanders of Houston; and numerous nieces and nephews.
