CARLTON STAPLER
Carlton Stapler, 88, of New Hope, Alabama passed away Dec. 15, 2004. He was born Sept. 5, 1916. He was a Civilian Heavy Mechanic with the Army (Civil Service) and retired in 1972 there at Redstone Arsenal, Huntsville, Alabama. He loved gardening, and fishing, and visiting friends. In the 1920's, Carlton cleared farm for the Guntersville Dam to be built and for water to back up to form what's now the Guntersville lakes. He cleared the landÊÊwith cross cut saws and moved timber with mules in the Marshall Co. area for a government project to help the people suffering the Depression years to have income. He would board with a family in the low lands, and have only a biscuit for lunch some days, and on better days he had peanut butter. A veteran of World War II, he joined the Army in Feb. 1940 and served with the 410th Tank Destroyers as a second machine gunner in Company M. during the war, which was attached to the 103rd "Cactus" ID. He was discharged in Aug. 1946. He was staged at a base in New York and embarked from there to his journey to an experience he had no dream of in his lifetime. A two week sea-sickening trip to England, another staging for a mass assault. Later, coming ashore in a second wave at Normandy, he made his way with his outfit across France to the Ardennes, waging battle in the "Battle of the Bulge". He once said that Gen. Patton came down from a hill in his jeep to Carltons unit, and ask his Captain of their status in the battle, and Carltons Captain told Patton of their casualties, that they were tired, cold, hungry, and low on ammo. Patton responded: "I understand Captain, but we're not moving back, we are advancing forward. Gather your men, and move out". He was preceded in death by his wife, Mildred Opal (Hill) Stapler who died Feb., 2003. He is survived by Winell Russell, James Allen Stapler, John Wayne Stapler, and Tommy Joe Stapler all of New Hope, Ala.; eight grandchildren; and eight greatigrandchildren.
GILBERT DURAN, SR.
Funeral services for Gilbert Duran, Sr., 72, of Palacios, were held Dec. 13, 2004 at St. Anthony de Padua Catholic Church with the Rev. Charles Dwomoh officiating. Interment was at Palacios cemetery. Mr. Duran was born Feb. 29, 1932 in Boling, Tx. to the late Pete and Maria Bocanegra Duran. He died Dec. 9, 2004. He was a retired potman for Aloca with 27 years of service. He was a member of St. Anthony de Padua Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus Council No. 6889. He was also a volunteer for Robert Duran Food Pantry. He is survived by his wife, Mary Alvarez Duran; daughter Sonia Ayala of Palacios; sons Richard Duran, Gilbert Duran Jr., Andrew Duran and Robby Duran, all of Palacios, and Carlos Duran of Nederland, Tx.; sisters Lupe Duran and Olga Duran, both of Houston, and Andrea Duran of Wharton; brothers Pete Duran and Ricky Duran, both of Wharton; 18 grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Carol Ann Duran; sisters Irene Vargas and Corrine V
argas; and brothers Olegario "Ollie" Vargas, Sr. and Robert Duran. Arrangements were with Artero Memorial Chapels, Port Lavaca.
OLEGARIO "OLLIE" B. VARGAS, SR.
Funeral services for Olegario "Ollie" B. Vargas, Sr., 80, of Palacios, were held Nov. 30, 2004 at St. Anthony's Catholic Church with the Rev. Charles Dwomoh officiating. Interment with military honors under the auspices of VFW Queen-Hamlin Post 2467 was at Palacios cemetery. Mr. Vargas was born March 6, 1924 in Yorktown, Tx. to Crescencio Vargas and Mary Bocanegra. He died Nov. 26, 2004. He was retired from Alcoa after 33 years. He was a veteran of World War II serving in the Pacific Theater as an Army Staff Sergeant and a tank driver in the 706th Battalion. He was a member of the Alcoa 25-Year Club, VFW Queen-Hamlin Post 2467, past Grand Knight of Knights of Columbus Council No. 6889, and a member of St. Anthony's Catholic Church. Olegario touched many lives with his kindness, love of life and love for his family. He will be greatly missed by all who loved and knew him. We are all blessed to have had Olegario in our lives. He is survived by his loving wife, Margaret Hernandez Vargas; daughters Bertha Ann Vargas of Minneapolis, Minn., Irene Coy of Austin, Margie Simpson of Fort Worth, and Esther Ambrogio of Jersey City, N.J.; sons Olegario "Ollie" Vargas Jr. and Steve Vargas, both of Palacios, and Retired Commander Sgt. Maj. Mark Vargas of Crestview, Fla.; sisters Sofia Roa of Lubbock, Irene Roa of Fort Worth, Maria Ramirez of San Isidro, Tx. and Liulu Stigen of Yorktown, Tx.; brothers Samuel Vargas of Baytown and Gilbert Duran of Palacios; 18 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; daughters Delia Vargas and Rose Marie Garcia; brother Robert Duran; and sisters Corrine Vargas, Irene Vargas and Delia Vargas. In lieu of flowers, the family request donations be made to Parkinson's Research Foundation.
MABEL ELVIRA SANDERS
Funeral services for Mabel Elvira Sanders, 77, of Palacios were held Nov. 29, 2004 at Trinity Baptist Church in Palacios, with the Rev. Louis Rush officiating. Interment was at Hawley cemetery, Blessing. A native of DeWitt County, she was born Nov. 19, 1927 to the late Monroe and Elvira Hoot Schmidt. She died Nov. 25, 2004. A resident of Palacios since 1958, she was a member of the Baptist Church. She is survived by her husband, Aubrey Denson Sanders of Palacios; daughter, Gail Dannels and husband, Bill, of Midland; son David Sanders and wife, Debbie, of Palacios; four sisters, Shirley Reiman and Evelyn Schmidt of Runge, Joyce Holtz of Thomaston, and Dolly Holzapfel of Blessing; two brothers, Bob Schmidt of Kenedy and Franklin Schmidt of Runge; four grandchildren, Brandon and Ashley Sanders of Palacios, Jeffery Dannels and wife, Jennifer, of Little Elm, and Jennifer Dannels of Baltimore, Md.; and one great-granddaughter, Morgan Dannels of Little Elm. She was preceded in death by a brother, Monroe Schmidt. Pallbearers are Jeff Dannels, Bill Dannels, Charles Mize, Bennie Mize, John Toellner and John Ressler. JUANITA Y. MORISH
Funeral services for Juanita Y. Morish, 86, of Hallettsville were held Nov. 26, 2004 at Kubena Funeral Home, Hallettsville with the Rev. Leon Smothers officiating A native of Arkansas, she was born Oct. 17, 1918 to the late Robert M. and Leticia Clopton Wright. She died Nov. 22, 2004. She is survived by two brothers, Stanley Wright of Palacios and R. M. Wright of Hallettsville. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clifford Morish, on July 27, 1994.; and by a brother, Charles Wright, and a sister, Doris Quinn.
MARY L. FLORES
Funeral services for Mary L. Flores, 72, of Palacios, were held Nov. 23, 2004 at the First Presbyterian Church in Palacios with Revs. Andy Blair and Janell Blair officiating. Interment was at Palacios cemetery. Mrs. Flores was born Dec. 11, 1931 in Cuero to the late Cosme H. and Ana Marmolejo Llanes. She died Nov. 19, 2004. She was a homemaker and a nurse's aide for Palacios Healthcare Center. She is survived by daughters Esperanza 'Hope' Marroquin, Diana Gonzalez and Jackie Flores, all of Palacios, and Mary Ann Olenick of San Marcos; sons John Flores, Mario Flores, Larry Flores, Joe Eugene Flores, Jesse Flores and Christopher Flores, all of Palacios, and Isidro Flores of Austin; a sister Gracie Morales of Rockdale; brothers Demetrio Llanes of Palacios, Lorenzo Llanes of Hobbs, N.M., and Canuto M. Llanes of Corpus Christi; 22 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Angel P. Flores; and brothers Fabian Yanes, George Llanes and Tim Llanes. SAMUEL SHERMAN WHITE, SR.
Funeral services for Samuel Sherman White, Sr. 81, of Cameron, Tx. were held Nov. 10, 2004 at the Church of Christ in Cameron with Gene VanNoord and O. E. Davidson officiating. Burial was at Oak Hill cemetery. Mr. White was born April 6, 1923 in Stephenville, Tx. to Sanford S. and Sarah Jones White. He died Nov. 8, 2004 at a Cameron hosital. He was a retired clerk for Aluminum Company of America in Rockdale. He was a graduate of Texas A & M University, an U. S. Air Force Veteran and a member of the Church of Christ. Mr. White married

MARIO DIAZ, SR.
Funeral services for Mario Diaz Sr., 43, of Palacios, were held Nov. 12, 2004 at The Living Word Church with the Rev. Tony Flores officating. Interment was at Palacios cemetery. Mr. Diaz was born Oct. 5, 1961, in Palacios, to Fred Jr. and Sadie Ann Cortez Diaz. He died Nov. 8, 2004. He was a carpenter, fisherman, welder, and iron worker. He was a member of a non-denominational church. He is survived by his wife, Mary Rankin Diaz; daughters, Stacy Nicole Diaz of Anahuac and Justice Nicole Diaz of Orange; sons, Mark Gonzalez of San Antonio and Mario Diaz Jr. of Baytown; sister, Rosalinda Vargas of Bay City; brother, Joe Diaz of Palacios; and five grandchildren. MARIA ROCHA TOBIAS
Funeral services for Maria Rocha Tobias, 104, of Palacios, were held at Oct. 30, 2004 at Primera Iglesia Bautista in Palacios. Interment was at Palacios cemetery. Mrs. Tobias was born Jan. 21, 1900, in Matahuela, Mexico, to the late Martin and Encarnacion Jinez Rocha. She died Oct. 28, 2004. She was a homemaker and Baptist. She is survived by a son, Manuel De Jesus Tobias of Palacios; sister, Anatacia Sandoval of Palacios; three grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Julio Tobias; sisters, Concha Salazar, Luisa Estrello, Juana Morales and Julia Rivera; and brothers, Juaquin Rocha and Felipe "Chato" Rocha. Mrs. Williams was born Sept. 25, 1924 in Palacios to Donald Welsh and Grace Mae Hicks Welsh. She died Oct. 21, 2004 in Houston. She was resident of Angleton for the past 1-1/2 years, and had been a long time resident of Oklahoma and Houston. She was retired from Hughes Tool Co. in Houston.
