HERMAN BOND
Former Palacios mayor and businessman Herman Bond, 68, died at his home in Colleyville, Tx. on Aug. 23, 2004. Private burial service is planned at the family plot in Patillo, Tx. He was born in New London, Tx. to L.H. "Chick" Bond and Ora Gillis Bond. "Chick" played baseball for the Houston Buffalos in the twenties and was a longtime employee of Humble Oil Co. Mr. Bond was a longtime Dallas banker and civic leader. His varied commercial interests also included land development, residential construction, manufacturing and real estate brokerage. He is survived by his wife of 25 years, Linda Leibrock Bond, of Colleyville; sons Zachary Wyatt Bondæof New York City and Lee Gillis Bond of Houston; sisters Jonnie Smith of San Antonio and Jean Bond Davis (R.J.)æof Tulsa; and five nephews and two nieces. He was preceded in death by his eldest son, Stephen Bond. Mr. Bond began his bankingæand civic careers in Snyder, Tx. at the West Texas State Bank at the age of nineteen. In Palacios, he served as president of the Palacios State Bank and as mayor of Palacios from 1966 to 1969. In the seventies, Mr. Bond was president of the Bank of the Southwest and served as President and CEO ofæHampton State Bank and First Continental Bank in Dallas." His other banking interests spanned the state from El Paso to Waxahachie and DeSoto and to Houston. In business partnerships, he developed residential subdivisions, The Summit in Cedar Hill and Steeplechase in Midlothian. He built homes in these areas and in Kessler Park. In family business, Mr. Bond and his wife, Linda, created Agency 007, Inc. which manufactured a wholesale line of handmade gifts internationally. This entity now operates in real estate brokerage in Colleyville, Tx. He received a national service award from the U.S. Junior Chamber of Commerce for his work in public relations for the El Paso Jaycees. He served as president of this chapter in 1961 and was president of the Oak Cliff Country Club and director of the Oak Cliff Chamber of Comerce. Because of his avid sporting interest in field trialing, Mr. Bond built, owned and operated Willow Run Kennel and Hunt Club in DeSoto in the eighties. His favorite pastime was supporting and attending performances of marching bands, drum corps, civic and university level orchestras in which his sons performed. JOHN B. SEXTON
Graveside services for John B. Sexton, 60, of Palacios, were held Aug. 30, 2004 at Rosewood Memorial Park in Humble, Tx. with Rev. Mark Stanridge officiating. Mr. Sexton passed away Aug. 26, 2004 in Lake Charles, Louisiana. Mr. Sexton was a retired Vice President with Bank One, a veteran of the U. S. Army and a member of the Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife, Carolyn Sexton; brother James C. Sexton and wife Becky; sisters Dorothy Sensabaugh and husband Sam, and Gail Abraham and husband Paul; good friends Anthony and Dorothy Domingo; special cousin Carlton Sexton and wife Mary Ann; and with nieces, nephews, cousins and wonderful neighbors.
JOSE G. SALINAS, SR.
Funeral services for Jose G. Salinas, Sr., 52, of Palacios, were held Aug. 28, 2004 at Artero Memorial Chapels in Port Lavaca with the Rev. Raymond Salinas, Jr. officiating. Interment was at Palacios cemetery. Mr. Salinas was born March 19, 1952 in Pharr, Tx. to the late Raymond Sr. and Maria Alaniz Salinas. He died Aug. 24, 2004. He was a commercial fisherman and a member of Church of God of Prophecy. He is survived by a daughter, Stephanie Salinas; son, Joseph Salinas, Jr.; sisters Maria Ortiz of Corpus Christi, Elida Mendez of Houston, Olivia Estudillo and Janie Campos, both of Palacios, Delia Hudson of Pearland, and Abelia Guillen of Texas City; brothers the Rev. Raymond Salinas, Jr. of Francitas, and David and Robert "Bobby" Salinas, both of Palacios. Pallbearers were Paul Campos III, Toby Reyna Jr., Tommy Reyna, Michael Salinas, Jesse mendez Jr., and Frankie Rodriguez III. Honorary pallbearers were Alfred Guillen, Richard Lopez, Paul Campos Jr. and Jesse Mendez Sr.
ISABEL "SIS" MELANCON
Funeral services for Isabel "Sis" Melancon, 75, of Rockport, were held Aug. 29, 2004 at Charlie Marshall Funeral Home Chapel in Rockport, Tx. Interment was at Palacios cemetery. Mrs. Melancon was born April 6, 1929 in Palacios to John and O'linda Garcia. She died Aug. 24, 2004 in Corpus Christi. She moved to Aransas Pass, Texas in 1949 and to Rockport in 1980.Ê "Sis" spent her life loving her family, raising Chihuahuas and being an avid bingo player. She is survived by two daughters, Mary Dolores (Marvin) Dewveall of Portland, Tx. and Ellen (Early) Radcliff of Zavalla, Tx.; brother, Ernesto Garcia of Rockport; sister, Amelia Torres of San Antonio, Tx.; four granddaughters, Vicki (Duane) Gonzalez of Tomball, Tx., Lisa Radcliff of Rockport, Tracie Duff of Portland and Patricia (Brian) Withers of Corpus Christi; one grandson, Tav Radcliff of Rockport; and six great-grandchildren, Justin Duff, Ashley, Rebecca and Shaun Gonzalez, and William and Kaitlyn Withers. She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Henry and Rudolf "Chacos" Garcia; her sister, Ellen Greer and her husband, A. B. "Ray" Melancon.
ALTA MARIE HAMLIN WHITE
Alta Marie Hamlin White, 68, passed away peacefully on Aug. 7, 2004 in Conroe, Tx. She was born April 12, 1936 in Palacios to Regan and Edna Hamlin. Alta was a longtime resident of Coldspring, Tx. where she raised her family and continued to live after her husband, Thomas Troy Patrick's death in 1972. She was a LVN and spent many years in the nursing field. She is survived by her mother, Edna Hamlin of Palacios; brother, Thomas R. Hamlin Jr. of Rockport, Tx.; children Chyrel L. Brennan of Houston and Robert B. Patrick of Coldspring; and grandchildren Robert Tyler Patrick and Shannon Raye Lindley. She was preceded in death by her son, Thomas Isom "Tip" Patrick and grandson, Thomas Edward Lindley. Robert and Chyrel express their appreciation to all her nurses at Park Manor of Conroe nursing facility who took such good care of her, and to Gingers, her good friend and hospice nurse who was so special to Alta. In lieu of flowers, Robert and Chyrel request donations to Lighthouse Hospice in Tomball, Tx. or Queen-Hamlin VFW Post in Palacios. Family and friends will gather together at the Queen-Hamlin VFW Post in Palacios to remember Alta Marie on a date to be announced later.
JOHN EDWARD FRANKSON
Funeral services for John Edward Frankson, 82, of the Carancahua Community were held Aug. 25, 2004 at the Palacios Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Hollie Brisco officiating. Interment was at the Palacios cemetery. Mr. Frankson died Sunday, Aug. 22. He was born July 24, 1922 in Carancahua to the late Lloyd Edward and Leta Lee Linville Frankson. A member of the First United Methodist Church of Palacios and a lifelong resident of the Carancahua Community, he was a rancher and a member of the Mustang Square Dancers Club. A veteran of World War II, he was a pilot in U.S. Army Air Force. Survivors include: sister-in-law JoBeth Frankson of Palacios; nephew John C. Frankson and wife, Dawna, and their children, Eric Frankson and Kimberly Hanz; and nephew David Frankson, Jr. and his wife, Pattie, and their children, Kenneth, Cheryl and Kelli Frankson. He was preceded in death by a brother, David A. Frankson, Sr. Pallbearers will be Pete Griffith, Galen Johnson, Troy Shimek, Cody Adams, Harry Frankson and Marvin Stuhrenberg. Honorary pallbearers were Friends at the Dairy Queen, and members of the Mustang Square Dancers Club.
JOANN STORY
Funeral services for Joann Story, 61, of Blessing were held Aug. 25, 2004 at the First Baptist Church in Blessing with the Rev. Larry Swift officiatingb. Interment was at Hawley cemetery. Mrs. Story died Sunday, Aug. 22. She was born April 1, 1943 at Desark, Ark., to John and Mildred Key Nesbitt. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Blessing. Survivors in addition to her parents are two daughters, Theresa McCullough and Shellia Churchill, both of Mississippi; one son, Jimmy Story of Farmington, Ark.; two sisters, Joyce Smith and Carol Yates; and six brothers, Floyd Nesbitt of Palacios; James Nesbitt of Blessing; Lindell Nesbitt of Cuero; Lloyd Nesbitt of Porter; Arbie Nesbitt of DeBalls Bluff, Ark.; and Alvie Nesbitt of Holly Hill, S.C. Pallbearers were Arbie Nesbitt, Lloyd Nesbitt, James Nesbitt, Sr., James Nesbitt, Jr., Ricky Nesbitt and Robert Smith.
GERTRUDE FAITH STEWART THOMPSON
Funeral services fror Gertrude Faith Stewart Thompson, 95, of San Antonio, were held Aug. 21, 2004 at the First United Methodist Church of Palacios with Rev. Ray Wells officiating. Interment was at Palacios cemetery. Mrs. Thompson was born June 6, 1909 in Wakita, OK to the late James W. and Sarah Jane Barley Stewart. She died Aug. 17, 2004 in San Antonio, TX at the Regent Care Center. When she was a few months old she, along with her parents and four older brothers moved to Palacios. Her father had a furniture store and they lived in quarters above it until they bought a house close to the old Methodist Church. She always loved going to church. In fact she met her husband Fred there, as he was her Sunday School teacher. She graduated from Palacios High School in 1928, and then she and Fred were married
on Feb. 7, 1930. They lived in many places over the next 30 years, then moved back to Palacios for retirement. This was a special time for her as she was able to spend more time with her 12 grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, and was very active in the women's group. She was also involved in the Athena Club and the Bridge Club. She has been a resident of San Antonio for the past 3 years. Mrs. Thompson was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and great great grandmother that will always be remembered for the love she gave unselfishly to her family, friends, and church. She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, James and Merle Thompson of Sterling City, TX; daughter and son-in-law, Freda and William Guion of San Antonio; son-in-law Robert Simmons of San Antonio; sister-in-law Naomi Stewart of Houston; grandchildren Fred Thompson, Audrey Kline, Susan Guion, Catherine Bermea, Rebecca Ames, Stewart Simmons, Carla Lee, Sarah Fogus, Kris Simmons, Dunae' Stehling, Craig Althaus, Monte Althaus and Amy Bagwell; 25 great-grandchildren; 3 great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Fred M. Thompson, daughters: Giovanna Simmons and Kay Gold; and her brothers: Lawrence, David, James Clifton and Glenn Stewart.
ALEX "CHICO" BUCKLEY
Funeral services for Alex "Chico" Buckley, 84, of Palacios, were held Aug. 16, 2004 at St. Anthony's of Pauda Catholic Church with Rev. Charles Dwomah officiating. Interment was at Palacios cemetery. Mr. Buckley was born Feb. 26, 1920, in Poteet, to the late Fred and Betty Gonzalez Buckley. He died Friday, Aug. 13, 2004. He was a retired custodian for Palacios ISD and a Catholic. He is survived by his sons, Darrell W. Buckley and Bobby Buckley, both of Palacios; a sister, Amie Wright of Palacios; 12 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by brothers, Tony Buckley and Felix McGraw.
JUANITA ALVAREZ MARTINEZ GARCIA
Funeral services for Juanita Alvarez Martinez Garcia, 82, of Palacios, were held Aug. 16, 2004 at Apostolic Church with Rev. Eddie Martinez officiating. Interment was at Palacios cemetery. Mrs. Martinez was born March 8, 1922, in Gonzales, to the late Benito and Matilda Arce Alvarez. She died Aug. 12, 2004. She was a homemaker and a member of Apostolic Church. She is survived by her husband, Francisco "Pancho" G. Garcia; daughters, Petra Ochoa of Edna, Dominga Andrade and Gloria Martinez, both of Palacios, and Benita Moreno of Allen; sons, John Martinez and Joe Martinez, both of Palacios and Angelo Martinez of High Point, N.C.; and brother, Espirion Alvarez of Chicago. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Julian L. Martinez; daughters, Grace Martinez and Annette Martinez Long; and son, Jose Martinez.
