Funeral services for John Cody Perez, 17, of Palacios, were held Aug. 11, 2003 at the First Baptist Church in Palacios. Interment was at Palacios cemetery. Cody was born Feb. 12, 1986 in Austin to Robert G. and Lisa Tolleson Perez of Palacios. He died Aug. 8, 2003. He was a senior at Palacios High School. He is survived by his parents; sister Tiffany Starr Perez of Palacios; brother Robert "Bobby" Perez, Jr. of Palacios; and grandparents Refugio and Janie Garcia Orozco and C. L. "Sam" Tolleson, all of Palacios, and Margaret Barnett Hassell of Victoria. He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Joe A. Perez.
ROBERT DEAN HOLLOWAY
Funeral services for Robert Dean Holloway, 71, of Palacios, were held Aug. 11, 2003 at the First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Ray Wells officiating. Interment was at Palacios cemetery. Mr. Holloway was born Sept. 26, 1931 in Palacios to the late Gilva Loyd and Leah Idell Cook Holloway. He died Aug. 6, 2003 at Detar Hospital in Victoria. A lifelong resident of Palacios, he was a member of the First United Methodist Church and retired from Alcoa after 45 years. He was a U. S. Army veteran of the Korean War. He is survived by his wife, Thelma Beard Holloway; two daughters and sons-in-law, Lucille and Mark Remlinger of Blessing and Fay and George McMurry of Conroe, Tx. Pallbearers were Chris Webb, Andy and Michael Beard, Ralph Brown, Trammel Hunter and Leo Morish. Honorary pallbearers are Edwin Bowers and J. C. Rush. Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church of Palacios or to the American Cancer Society.
ARMANDO ESPINOSA, SR.
Funeral services for Armando "Mando" Espinosa, Sr. 75, of Palacios were held Aug. 6, 2003 at St. Anthony's de Pauda Catholic Church, with the Rev. Charles Dwomoh officiating. Interment , with military honors under the auspices of Queen-Hamlin VFW Post 2467, was held at Palacios cemetery. A native of Blessing, Mr. Espinosa was born July 16, 1928 to the late Jose A. and Catalina Vazquez Espinosa. He died Aug. 2, 2003. A veteran of the U.S. Army in the World War II era, he served in the Army Reserve during the Korea and Vietnam eras. He resigned his commission as a First Lieutenant in 1961. A general land manager, he was retired from Alcoa and Neumin Production of Point Comfort. Survivors include the widow, Maria Garcia Espinosa; four daughters, Liz Guerra of Palacios, Martha Thurman of Danbury, Yolanda Espinosa of Missouri City, and Mary Ann Meir of St. Helen, Mich.; a son, Armando Espinosa, Jr. of Palacios; a brother, Alvaro Espinosa of Canyon Lake; 16 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two infant sons; sisters Ecilda C. Espinosa and Catalina E. Ramirez; and brothers Jose I. Espinosa, Guillermo "Willie" Espinosa, and Guadalupe "Lupe" Espinosa, Sr. Pallbearers were Ray Guerra, Jr., Alfred Guerra, Santiago Guerro and Arthur Miranda, with Homer Aparicio, David Aparicio, Pete Aparicio, Christopher Meir, Michael Meir and Pete Sardelich, honorary pallbearers. NELSON BRYANT THOMPSON
Funeral services for Nelson Bryant Thompson, Sr., 69, of Lake Charles, La., were held Friday, Aug. 1, 2003 at Hixson Funeral Home in Lake Charles. The Rev. Doug deGraffenried officiated, with interment in Creel cemetery at Topsy, La. Mr. Thompson died July 30, 2003 in a Lake Charles hospital. He was born Jan. 2, 1934 near Orange Grove in Jim Wells County, Texas to the late Richard Nelson Thompson and Margaret Elizabeth Daniel Thompson. His family moved to Palacios in 1936. He attended Palacios High School and was a former employee of Central Power & Light in Palacios. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church. He was a master sergeant in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War and also served during the Cuban Missile Crisis and in many countries. He earned various medals, including the Bronze Star, and received special recognition as a recruiter after recruiting more than 16, 000 men for the Army. He retired after 20 years. Survivors include the widow, Mrs. Ruby Parker Thompson of Lake Charles, La.; one son, Nelson Bryant Thompson II and wife Shannon of Mauriceville, Tex.; two daughters, Jeannette Renee Thompson of Longville, La.; and Mrs. Ronald (Debra Jo) LeBert of Westlake, La.; one brother, O. B. Thompson of Palacios; four sisters, Nellie Rockenbaugh and Dorothy Hamlin, both of Palacios; Dora Ann Rogers of Hobbs, N.M.; and Hazel Hominick of Corpus Christi; 26 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; six step-sons; and one step-daughter.
BERNICE OSWAY HARRISON JEWELL
Funeral services for Bernice Osway Harrison Jewell, 97, of Brady, Tx., were held July 25, 2003 at Palacios Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Gaylen Morris officiating. Interment was at Palacios cemetery. Mrs. Jewell was born Dec. 8, 1905 in Brady to the late Esau and Theodoshia Josephine Tubbs Harrison. She died July 21, 2003 at the Shuffield Nursing Home in Brady. She was a resident of Brady for the past 12 years and a former longtime resident of Palacios. She was a member of the Assembly of God Church. She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Grace Wilvian and Austin Dabbs of Brady, and Dorothy Ellen and James Baldwin of the Birch Community; two sons and daughters-in-law, Bernard James and Bessie Dunn of Port Lavaca, and Patrick Henry and Rose Jewell; 20 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Emil C. Jewell; sisters Laura Naomi Meyers and Dela Amanda Fitch; brothers William R. Harrison, William Morris Harrison, Hugh Armstrong Harrison, and June Copender Harrison; and great-granddaughter Heather Grace Jewell. Pallbearers were Mark and John Dabbs, James Larry Jewell, David Wayne Jewell, Leroy Jewell, and James Baldwin.
VINCENT DALE TOLLESON
A memorial service for Vincent Dale Tolleson, 48, of Palacios, was held July 26, 2003 at the Blessing Community Center. Mr. Tolleson was preceded in death by a brother, Sammy Lee Tolleson. He was survived by his parents C.L. (Sam) Tolleson of Palacios and Margaret Hassell of Victoria; son Daniel Tolleson of Mancos, CO; sisters Lisa Perez of Palacios and Kim Kieler of Wharton; one brother Jeff Tolleson of Palacios and numerous nieces and nephews.
CHARLIE LONGORIA, JR.
Funeral services for Charlie Longoria, Jr., 59, were held at Compean Funeral Home in Houston, Tx. with the Rev. Samuel Puccio officiating. Interment was at Palacios cemetery with Rev. Young. Mr. Longoria was born March 17, 1944 in Palacios to the late Charlie and Faustina Longoria. He died July 14, 2003. He was a commercial fisherman and a Presbyterian. He is survived by sons and daughter-in-law Charlie and Tiffany Longoria of Corpus Christi, Tx. and Alfred Longoria of Spring, Texas; daughters and son-in-law Susan and Joe Madrigal of Spring, Cynthia and Alex Salinas of Houston and Debra and Abel Gomez of Pasadena; sisters Eva Trevino and Dora Deleon both of Palacios, and Marina Placenio of Clute; brothers Felix Longoria and Frank Longoria all of Palacios, and Adam Longoria of Newport News, Va.; 17 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Alicia Fuentes, in 1994. Pallbearers were Lupe Longoria Jr., Frankie Longoria, Freddie Longoria, Kenneth Garcia, Charlie Longoria VI, and Steven Carothers.
TONY ROCHA
Rosary services for Tony Rocha, 55, of Lubbock were held July 20, 2003 at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church. Memorial services were held July 21, 2003 at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church with Father Andres Mendoza officiating. Mr. Rocha was born December 15, 1947 in Brownsville to Antonio Rocha, Sr. and Trinidad Jiminez Rocha. He died July 16, 2003 in Palacios. He attended Palacios High School. Tony moved to Lubbock from Palacios in 1969. He married
Rosie Gobea on April 4, 1969 in Lubbock. He was a self employed mechanic. He was a member and an usher at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church. Mr. Rocha is survived by his wife, Rosie Rocha of Lubbock, two daughters, Brenda Howerton and Toni Perez, both of Lubbock; brother, Joe Rocha of Palacios; three sisters, Ida Garcia of Houston, Isabel Martinez of Victoria and Rosalinda Deleon of La Porte; and three grandchildren, Jessica Moreno, Royal Moreno and Jolie Rico; three step grandchildren, Lesly Perez, Michael Perez, and Matthew Perez; and one great grandson, Xavier Rodriguez. ABEL B. PIERCE, JR.
Funeral services for Abel B. Pierce, Jr., 93, of Blessing, were held July 7, 2003 at St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Bay City. Interment was at Hawley cemetery. Mr. Pierce was born Oct. 20, 1909 in St. Paul, Minn. to Adelaide Hall Pierce and Abel Brown Pierce. He died July 3, 2003. He was a retired architect and member of St. John's Episcopal Church in Palacios. In addition to establishing the Blessing Historical Foundation with his wife, Ruth Harrison Pierce, he had served as president of both the Matagorda County Museum Association and the Matagorda County Historical Society. He also belonged to the Sons of the Republic of Texas. He was the grandson of Jonathan Edwards Pierce and Nannie Lacy Pierce of Blessing (Tidehaven); and of Lee and Alice Sr. Germain Hall of St. Paul, Minnesota. His great-grandfather, William D. Lacy, signed the Texas declaration of independence from Mexico. His grandfather was Jonathan E. Pierce and his great-uncle was the legendary Abel Head (Shanghai) Pierce. His pioneer ancestors came to Texas with Stephen P. Austin's 'sld Three Hundred's He was a direct descendant of John Alden and Priscilla Mullins. He married
Ruth Perla Harrison, daughter of George A. and Lena Dickert Harrison, in 1942 at St. John's Episcopal Church in Palacios by the Reverend Gray Blandy. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Ruth Harrison Pierce, of Blessing; daughters Adelaide Pierce Carter and husband Jon Gary Carter of Valley Center, Calif.. and Sally Jeannette Pierce of Blessing; a son, Dr. Johnathan Lacy Pierce and wife Anna-Maria of Nevada City, Calif.; granddaughter Jennifer Anne Pierce of Nevada City, Calif.; and nephews Lee Hall Pierce and Fredrick Pierce of Blessing. He was preceded in death by his parents, and his brothers Lee M. 'sick'sPierce, Hall E. Pierce and Clinton L. Pierce. Pallbearers were Jon Gary Carter, Holly Claybourn, John L. Harrison, Lee Edward Pierce, Lee Hall Pierce and Harley C. Robinson. RANDALL EDWARD MERTZ
Graveside services for Randall Edward Mertz, 49, will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 8, 2003 at Resthaven Memorial Park in Midland with Reverend Larry Long officiating. Mr. Mertz was born on Dec. 30, 1953 to M.E. and Carolyn Mertz in Baytown, Tx. He died July 3, 2003. Randy moved to Midland, TX when he was ten years old. He graduated from Midland High School and then entered the Marine Corps serving four years. Randy was a down hole submersible pump expert and worked for various companies in Midland and overseas. Randy enjoyed hunting, fishing, motorcycles and metal detecting. He is survived by his parents M.E. and Carolyn Mertz of Palacios, TX; one daughter Madalyn Mertz and her mother Marsha both of Valley Spring; one brother Wade and his wife Cheryl Mertz of Midland, TX; three sisters and brothers-in-law Sandra and Alvin Ruddock, Robin and Craig Holland all of Midland, and Susan and Kiech Jung of San Antonio; two nieces, two nephews, and numerous aunts and uncles.
