PAUL HATCHETT
Funeral services for Paul Hatchett, 66, of Bay City, will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, March 4 at Holy Cross Catholic church with the Rev. Casey Jarzombek officiating. Interment will be at Cedarvale cemetery. Mr. Hatchett was born Oct. 28, 1935, in Bay City, to the late George Alton and Minnie Cain Hatchett. He died March 2, 2002 He was a district clerk for Matagorda County and retired after 24 years of service. He was a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church. He is survived by his wife, Mary Douget Hatchett; daughter, Cacey Hebel of Austin; son, Troy Hatchett of Bay City; sisters, Cynthia Knost of Vidor and Cookie Gay of Fort Worth; and one grandchild. VERNON LOUIS HENKES
Funeral services for Vernon Louis Henkes, 42, of Buckeye, were held March 4, 2002 at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Bay City with Rev. Eric Klimpel officiating. Interment was at Roselawn Memorial Park in Van Vleck. Mr. Henkes was born Aug. 21, 1959 in Bay City to James Henkes, Sr. and Edith Vernon Henkes. He died in a truck accident on March 1, 2002. He was a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church and a lifelong resident of Matagorda County. He was a self-employed farmer who raised rice, cotton, milo and soybeans. He loved farming and was a true steward to the land. He was named "Outstanding Conservation Farmer" of the year by the Matagorda County Soil & Water Conservation District. He was active with the Matagorda County Farm Bureau and also the Matagorda County Farmers Co-Op. He was also an avid deer hunter and enjoyed hunting with his friends in Central Texas each year. All who knew Vernon were blessed by his presence. He never met a stranger. He will be truly missed by all who knew him. He is survived by his wife of 17 years, Donna Nelsen Henkes; daughters Jeanna Nicole and Courtney Lynn Henkes, all of Buckeye; parents James L. Henkes, Sr. and Edith Henkes; brothers Danny Henkes, Louis Henkes and Richard Henkes and his wife Stephanie; maternal grandmother Etta Vernon and paternal grandmother Annie Henkes. Pallbearers will be Jay, Scott, and Donald Ledwig, Geren Roecker, Derril Franzen, Victor Corporon, Larry Gassen Jr., and Bill Phillips. KATE "CATA" OCHOA
A Rosary for Katie "Cata" Ochoa, 88, of Palacios, wwas Feb. 19, 2002 at St. Anthony de Padua Catholic Church. A Funeral Mass was held at Feb. 20 at the church with Father Charles Dwomoh officiating. Interment was at Palacios cemetery. Mrs. Ochoa was born April 9, 1913 in Port Lavaca to the late Cruz and Concha Ochoa-Ochoa. She died Feb. 16, 2002. She was a homemaker and a member of the Catholic Church. She is survived by a daughter, Margie Bly of Cherino, Tx., sons Cruz Ochoa and Lupe Rojas, both of Palacios, and Rudy Lopez of Cotulla, Tx.; 20 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Alejandro Rojas; a daughter, Rebecca Viza; a son, Freddy Rojas; three sisters, Delfina Carabajal, Louisa Reyes and Janie Samudio; and two brothers, Alex Ochoa and Anselmo Sanchez.
BOBBY E. HARRISON
Funeral services for Bobby E. Harrison, 69, of Palacios, were scheduled for 2 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 19, 2002 at the First Baptist Church in Palacios, with the Rev. Hollas Hoffman and Rev. Rex Forsyth of Sagemont Church officiating. Interment will be in Palacios cemetery. Mr. Harrison, the world's third recipient of the AbioCor artificial heart, died Feb. 15, 2002 at St. Luke's Episcopal Hospital in Houston. A native of Alabama, he was born Jan. 9, 1933 in Needham, Choctaw County, Ala. to the late Thomas Lynn and Nelma Patrick Harrison. He moved to Texas at age 18 and had been a resident of Palacios since 1980. He was a retired blowout oil well firefighter and consultant. He is survived by his wife, Doris S. Killgore Harrison of Palacios; daughters Martha Sue Ricketson of Pasadena and Casandra Hochard of South Houston; sons Bobby Earl Harrison of Houston, Thomas Glenn Harrison of South Houston, Bobby E. Harrison, Jr. of Dickinson, Robert Wayne Killgore of Spring and Richard Lee Killgore of Sabine Pass; sisters Joann Daigle of Pasadena and Glynese Collins of West Columbia; brother-in-law Robert Slaughter of Palacios; nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, J. C. Harrison. Pallbearers are Robert Slaughter, Chipper Holt, Gail Nelson, J. E. Todd, Kevin Harvey, Gary Hunter, Larry Lanfear and Jerry Dittlinger. Funeral services for Betty Allgaier, 63, of Markham, were held Feb. 15, 2002 at First Baptist Church in Bay City with Dr. Michael Zimmerman officiating. Interment was at Midfield cemetery. Mrs. Allgaier was born Dec. 9, 1938, in San Saba, to the late Robert Merritt and Marie Lee Doris Chapman. She died Feb. 12, 2002. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Bay City. She was active in the W.M.U. and Women's Bible Study Group. She is survived by her husband, Ben H. Allgaier Jr.; daughter, Susan Allgaier of Bay City; sons, Benny Allgaier of San Antonio and Michael Allgaier of Bay City; sisters, Irene Tyler of Ganado, Linda Blakeney of Port Lavaca and Ruth Cummings of Severna Park, Md.; brothers, Roy Chapman and Ray Chapman, both of San Angelo; and three grandchildren.

Funeral services for Esther Lara, 58, of Palacios, were held Feb. 16, 2002 at St. Anthony Catholic Church with the Rev. Charles Dwomoh officiating. Interment was at Palacios cemetery. Mrs. Lara was born Oct. 13, 1943, in Valle Hermoso, Mexico, to the late Jose and Guadalupe Davila Santana. She died Feb. 14, 2002. She was a homemaker and a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church. She is survived by here husband, Magdaleno Reyes Lara; son, Gilbert "Gil" Lara of Austin; sisters, Guadalupe Lopez of Laredo and Anita Neyra of San Antonio; brothers, Emilo Santana and Gabriel Santana, both of San Antonio and Jose Santana, Jr. of Nuevo Laredo, Mexico. She was preceded in death by a son, Jesse Lara; and a brother, Oscar Santana.
GYLE T. McKISSICK
Graveside funeral services for Gyle T. McKissick, 87, of Buckeye, were held Feb. 14, 2002 at the Ashby cemetery with Rev. Joe Ramsey officiating. Mr. McKissick was born Nov. 1, 1914 in Palacios to the late Jame Luther and Belva Lockwood Dunbar McKissick. He died Feb. 12, 2001 at Matagorda General Hospital in Bay City. He was a member of the Baptist Church, a lifelong resident of the Buckeye area, and a retired rice farmer, gas station owner and security guard. He is survived by his wife, Thelma McKissick of Buckeye; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Michael Lee and Debbie McKissick, Sr. of Palacios and Gyle David McKissick of Bay City; three step-daughters, Marie Moser of California, Wanda Maxey of Minnesota, and Gail Luna of Livingston, Tx.; sisters Barbara Sullivan and Reba McKissick, both of Bay City; brother, Bill McKissick of Bay City; 16 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren; special neice Ann Saha of El Maton; and a host of other nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two brothers, James Luther "Jake" McKissick, Jr., and Warren H. McKissick; and by another special niece, Shirley Meyer. ELIZABETH FRANCES KANA
A Funeral Mass for Elizabeth Frances Kana, 81, of Palacios, was scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 2, 2002 at St. Anthony's Catholic Church with Revs. Gary Janak, Michael Lyons and Charles Dwomoh officiating. Interment will be at Holy Cross cemetery in El Campo, Tx. Mrs. Kana was born July 29, 1920 in Schulenburg, Tx. to John and Francis Orsak Morris. She died Jan. 30, 2002. She was a resident of Palacios since 1946, a member of St. Anthony's Catholic Church, the Catholic Daughters, and the St. Anthony's Altar Society. She was a loving mother and wife, a homemaker, and a bookkeeper for her husband's business. She is survived by her husband, George Charles Kana, Sr. of Palacios; daughter, Betty Boyd of Austin; sons, Edward J. Kana and wife Margaret of Lake Jackson, Tony Kana of Palacios, Joe C. MARTHA JOYCE HEBEL
Funeral services for Martha Joyce Hebel, 58, of Palacios were held Jan. 21, 2002 at the First United Methodist Church. The Rev. Charlie Parker officiated, followed by interment in Palacios cemetery. She died Saturday, Jan. 19. A native of Morgan City, La., she was born Jan. 15, 1944 to Elsie Loff Olson of Carancahua Community and the late Loyd Olson. Mrs. Hebel was a former school teacher for the Tidehaven, Blessing and Matagorda school districts. She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Palacios. Survivors in addition to her mother include husband, James Hebel of Palacios; three sons, James E. Hebel and Jeff Hebel, both of Austin, and Gary Hebel of Palacios; one brother, Edwin Olson of Palacios; and four grandchildren. Palacios Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
WILLIAM HERRIN
Funeral rites for William Herrin, 72, of Schike Point were held Saturday, Jan. 19, 2002 at Bay City Funeral Home Chapel, with Hollie Briscoe officiating. Interment was in Hawley cemetery. He died Wednesday, Jan. 16, following a lengthy illness. A native of Houston, Mr. Herrin was born Aug. 6, 1929 to Forest Green of Blessing and the late Mellie Green. He was a U.S. Veteran of Korea. He was a member of the East Bernard American Legion Post 226, and an active member of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary. He was preceded in death by his wife Emily Herrin in 1990. Survivors include son, Scott L. Herrin, three granddaughters, Bobbie Jo Herrin, Emily Herrin, Tracy Herrin, and two great-grandchildren.
ATHLYN (ATHIE) RAASCH
Athlyn (Athie) Raasch, 81, of Palacios, died Jan. 14, 2002, in Victoria. A private family graveside service was to be held at Hawley cemetery near Blessing. Memorial services will be held at a later date. Athie was a member of the first Presbyterian Church of Palacios. She is survived by her daughters and son-in-laws, Debbie and Terry Mosier of Palacios and Carole and Sam Lark; grandchildren Mary Lynn Mosier, Leigh Ann Mosier, Rusty Woodland, Scott Lark, Stephen Lark, and Capt. Tom Lark; great-grandchildren, John Lark Woodland, Lyndale Woodland, Payton Lark, and Chaz Zemanek; and a sister Jean Maegli of Milwaukee, WI.
