Funeral services for Pete B. Torres Jr., 49, of Palacios, were held Oct. 6, 2001 at The Living Word Church with Rev. Tony Flores officiating. Interment was at Palacios cemetery. Mr. Flores was born Sept. 9, 1952 in Bay City to Lupe Perez Torees of Bay City and the late Pete B. Torres, Sr. He died Oct. 3, 2001. He was a maintenance technician at Formosa. He is survived by his wife, Mary Jane Ramos Torres; stepdaughters, Rachel Maldonado, Lisa Martinez and Christina Z. Diaz, all of Palacios; stepson, Richard Ramos of Palacios; mother; sisters, Helen Torres and Joyce Hernandez, both of Bay City, Anna Lopez of Phoenix, Ariz., Sylvia Hirani of Alburquerque, N.M.; brothers, Robert Torres and Rudy Torres, both of Derry, N.H., and Julian Torres, Richard Torres, Frederick "Freddy" Torres and Steven Torres, all of Ann Arbor, Mich.; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by: father; and sister, Diana Mejias. Pallbearers were Jesus Hernandez Jr., Ray Ramos, Jesse R. Constancio, Gabino Maldonado, Ernesto Martinez, Leonel Reynaga, Agustin Jasso and Jesse Leos.
LINDA JEAN HUNT TRAYLOR
Funeral services for Linda Jean Hunt Traylor, 56, of Palacios were held Sept. 27, 2001 at the First Baptist Church in Palacios, followed by interment at Greenlawn Gardens cemetery in Port Lavaca. She died Sept. 24, 2001. A native of El Campo, she was born Feb. 13, 1945 to Harold and Mary Jane Payne Hunt. She was a member of the First Baptist Church, the Pilot Club and the Art Club. Survivors in addition to her parents, Harold and Norma Hunt, include her daughter and son-in-law, Holly and Glenn Vacek, son and daughter-in-law, Reid and Sandy Whitley; sisters, Judy Rohde and Kelli Huitt; brother, Tommy Hunt; and grandchildren, Whitley and Levi Jacek, and Tate, Jayde and Amesti Whitley. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jack Traylor; and her mother, Mary Jane Payne Hunt. Memorials may be made to the Hospice Support, Inc., P. O. Box 1417, El Campo, Tex. 77437. RAMONA Q. DeLEON
Funeral services for Ramona Q. DeLeon, 72, of LaPorte were held Wednesday, Oct. 3, 2001 at the Paul U. Lee-LaPorte Funeral Home, with Father Eric Pitre officiating. She died Oct. 1, 2001 in Houston. Born Aug. 17, 1929 in Lyford, Texas, to the late Remijio and Maria (Quintero) Quilantan, Mrs. DeLeon was affiliated with the Catholic Church. Survivors include her husband, Antonio E. DeLeon; children Zenaida Gatica and husband, Mike C. Gatica of Palacios, Emma D. Chavez and husband, Gabriel H. Chavez of LaPorte, Antonio DeLeon III of Deer Park, Herlinda D. Diaz and husband, Randy Diaz of LaPorte, Alberto DeLeon and wife, Doris, of Houston; brothers and sister, Ted, Tony and Mel Quilantan of Lyford, and Petra Rubio of Raymondville; 19 grandchildren; 42 great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild.
RED OCHOA RENDON, SR.
Funeral services for Fred Ochoa Rendon Sr., 80, of Palacios, were held Sept. 28, 2001 at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Palacios with the Rev. Charles Dwomoh officiating. Burial was at Palacios cemetery. Mr. Rendon was born Feb. 1, 1921, in Port Lavaca, to the late Alberto F. Sr. and Porfiria Ocha Rendon. He died Sept. 26, 2001. He was a retired shrimper and a member of St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Palacios. He was a member of the VFW, American Legion, Knights of Columbus and Disable American Veterans in Palacios. He is survived by wife, Anita "Annie" Solis Rendon; daughter, Ophelia Lara of Blessing; son, Eddie T. Rendon of Inez; 10 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by sons, Fred O. Rendon Jr. and Benny Rendon; and his parents.
KEVIN CLAXTON
Funeral services for Kevin Claxton, 19, of Blessing, were held Sept. 26 at the First Baptist Church in Palacios with Rev. Louis Rush and Rev. Hollas Hoffman officiating. Interment was at Hawley cemetery in Blessing. Kevin was born Sept. 10, 1982 to Donny Claxton and Ann Jurney Busby. He died Sept. 23, 2001 at his residence. He was a lifelong resident of Blessing and a member of the First Baptist Church of Palacios. He is survived by his father, Donny Claxton, of Blessing; mother and stepfather, Ann and Ron Busby of Blessing; a brother, James Claxton of Blessing; paternal grandparents Lowell and Mary Sue Claxton of Blessing; maternal grandparents Harvey and JoAnn Jurney of Utopia, Tx.; stepsister Leigh Lee of Palacios; and stepbrother Austin Busby of Blessing. Pallbearers were Mike Claxton, John David Jurney, Rusty Claxton, Toby Claxton, Scott Jones, Jimmie Rodriguez, Cody Jones and Austin Busby.
DEAN F. MERCK
Funeral services for Dean F. Merck, 68, of League City, Tex., were held Sept. 25, 2001 in the Friendswood "Friends" Church. Interment was at Hawley cemetery in Matagorda County. He died Sept. 22, 2001. Raised in Collegeport, Mr. Merck was a graduate of the University of Houston and worked for the Texas Department of Highways and Public Transportation as a civil engineer. Survivors include the wife, Nelda Merck of League City; mother, Dorothy Merck of Bay City; sons and their wives, Mark and Cathy Merck of Collegeport, Russ and Hayes Merck of Cromwell, C.T.; and Galen Merck of Clear Lake; and grandchildren, Danyelle and Matthew Merck. ALPHON 'AL' WILLIE HURTA
Graveside services for Alphon 'Al' Willie Hurta, 87, of Midfield, Tx. were held Sept. 21, 2001 at Hawley cemetery near Blessing with the Rev. Bill Haskell officiating. Mr. Hurta was born Nov. 28, 1913 in Karnes City, Tx. to the late Frank Joe and Anna Miska Hurta. He died Sept. 19, 2001. A resident of Midfield since 1923, he was a member of St. Paul's Methodist Church, and a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He served as Matagorda County Pct. 4 Commissioner for 24 years. He is survived by his wife, Mattie Nora "Totsy' Guynes Hurta of Midfield; daughter Nancy Gray of Midfield, and one grandchild Shannon Gray. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Helen Louise Hurta; sisters Sophie Roberts, Emma Sedlacek and Albina Bosak; and brothers Edwin E. Hurta, Louise Hurta, and Frank Hurta.
VEDA C. DALE
A Memorial Service for Veda C. Dale, 63, of Palacios, was held Sept. 22, 2001 at Grace Episcopal Church in Port Lavaca with Rev. Canon Robert DeWolfe officiating. Interment was at Hawley cemetery near Blessing. Mrs. Dale was born July 21, 1938 in Dallas, Texas, to James E. and Bernice Chenault. She died Sept. 16, 2001. Formerly of Houston, she was the former owner and operator of Palacios Sporting Goods until her retirement. Aside from being a businesswoman, she was a civic leader and director of Palacios Chamber of Commerce, director and chairman of Friends of Elder Citizens in Palacios, member of Harmony Club, and a faithful member of Grace Episcopal Church in Port Lavaca. She is survived by her husband of 44 years, Jim Dale of Palacios; daughter Laurie Ford and husband James of Houston; son Jim Dale of Coppell, Tx.; and five grandchildren, Amber Dale of Palacios, Katie and Kerrie Ford of Houston, Jessica and Mickey Dale of Coppell. Funeral services for Jose Santiago 'Jimmy' Martinez, Sr., 49, of Markham, were held Sept. 19, 2001, at the Artero Memorial Chapels in Port Lavaca with Rev. Richard Alamia officiating. Interment was at Palacios cemetery. Mr. Martinez was born Oct. 18, 1951 in Mathis, Tx. to Elestio and Aurora Rendon-Martinez. He died Sept. 15, 2001. He was a light equipment operator for Hunter Welding, Inc. and a Baptist. He is survived by his wife, Mary Pena Martinez of Markham; a daughter, Valerie Jean Martinez of West Germany; three sons, Philip Ray Martinez and Jose Santiago Martinez, Jr., both of Markham, and David Trevino of Bay City; sisters Irma DeLeon, Olivia Guerra, Janie Ramirez, and Susie Constancio, all of Palacios, Addie Zarate and Melissa Galvez, both of Blessing, and Aurora Cancino of Lake Jackson; a brother, Elestio Martinez, Jr. of Blessing; and a grandson, Jason Molina. He was preceded in death by a brother, Thomas Martinez.
DOROTHY SMITH
Funeral services for Dorothy Smith, 87, of Huntsville, were held Sept. 13, 2001 at Old Waverly Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Dan Alexander officiating. Interment was at Palacios cemetery. Mrs. Smith retired as a home economics teacher for over 30 years in Palacios. She is survived by daughter, Renee Stone and husband Robert of New Waverly; son, Jesse Guy Smith III and wife Sherry of Huntsville; grandchildren, Jesse Guy Smith IV, Jessica Stone Starkey and husband Shane, Cody Smith, Corey Smith, Carley Smith, Charlotte Stone, Scott Robert Stone and other loving relatives. She is preceded in death by her husband, Jesse Guy Smith, Jr. Pallbearers were Jesse Guy Smith IV, Cody Smith, Corey Smith, Shane Starkey and Scott Stone.
S. T. 'CURLY' OGLESBY
Funeral services for S. T. "Curly" Oglesby, 83, of Palacios were held Monday, Sept. 10, 2001 at the First Presbyterian Church, with the Revs. Andy and Janell Blair officiating. Interment was in Danevang cemetery at Danevang. Mr. Oglesby died Friday, Sept. 7, at Matagorda General Hospital in Bay City. He was born Oct. 29, 1917 in Flint, Tx., to the late Nimrod Samuel and Jewel Reed Oglesby. A resident of Palacios since 1939 and a member of the First Presbyterian Church, he married
Elnora Peterson in 1941 at Palacios. They recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. Mr. Oglesby started his own business, Oglesby Amusement Co. in 1943. He contributed much of his time by volunteering for the Fire Department, and with projects that benefited the youth of Palacios through providing stables for 4-H. He helped start a Little League organization, and spent many hours dedicated to the construction of the Recreation Center. In 1963, head coach Tony Carr named Curly an honorary letterman for attending every one of his son's Shark football practices. Survivors include the wife, Elnora; son, Terry Oglesby, daughter and son-in-law, Jan and Bobby Hooker, all of Palacios; one brother, James Ross Oglesby of Bay City; three grandsons, Tracy Perkins of San Antonio, Dax Oglesby and wife, Amy Elizabeth, of Austin, and Trent Oglesby and wife, Amy Elizabeth, of The Woodlands; one great-granddaughter, Madeline Gail Oglesby of Austin; numerous nieces and nephews. Pallbearers were his nephews: Larry, Gerald and Paul Taylor, Michael and Bill Glaros, Brent, Jim and Donald Petersen, and Tommy Michaelson. Memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church Landscaping Fund, or to the Danevang Lutheran Church.
