LaVene Turpen
LaVene Turpen, 82, of Bowie, TX passed away on May 23, 2002 in Bowie Memorial Hospital.
Mrs. Turpen was born on November 16, 1919 in Bowie, TX. She married Carl Chester Turpen on December 26, 1936 in Henrietta, TX. She was a homemaker and a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Bowie, TX.
Funeral services for Mrs. Turpen were held on Sunday, May 26, 2002 at 3:00 p.m. at Calvary Baptist Church with Rev. Ron Abbott officiating. Interment was held on Newport Cemetery in Newport, TX under the direction of Fry Funeral Home.
Surviving relatives include: one son, Royce Turpen, Rockwall, TX; four grandchildren, Dayna, Arlington, TX, Shelley, Wichita Falls, TX, Brad, Wiley, TX and Jay, Josephine, TX; ten great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Mrs. Turpen was preceded in death by her husband, Carl Turpen in 1999 and one son, Ronald Turpen in 1999.

George Washington Robertson IV
George Washington Robertson, IV, 59, of Montague, TX passed away on May 26, 2002.
Mr. Roberston was born on December 26, 1942 in Fort Worth, TX to George Washington Robertson, III and Memory Rose Wright Robertson. He married Deborah Musick on August 31, 2000. He was a carpenter for Jim Atkins, building homes. Mr. Robertson served in the Navy from 1960-1963.
Graveside services for Mr. Robertson will be held on Friday, May 31, 2002 at 2:00 p.m. at Long Branch Cemetery with Rev. Howard Walker officiating. Services were directed by Scott Morris Funeral Home.
Surviving relatives include: his wife, Deborah Robertson, Montague, TX; brother, Carl Robertson of Kiln, MS; two daughters, Keri McGraw, White Settlement, TX and Claudette Robertson; two sons, Robert Robertson, Granbury, TX and George Washington Robertson, V; one step-son, Jake Brewer, Azle, TX; his mother, Memory Robertson, Kiln, MS; one sister, Memory Ladner, Kiln, MS; and five grandchildren.
Mafalda Carr Wilson
Mrs. Mafalda Carr Wilson, age 84 of Wichita Falls, TX, passed away on May 28, 2002 in Wichita Falls.
Mrs. Wilson was born on October 12, 1917 in Wichita Falls, TX. She was a longtime resident of Bowie, TX until she moved to Wichita Falls in 1998. She taught music for over 50 years. She taught for 20 years at Midway and she taught at Bellevue and Bowie schools. She is remembered for the programs she put on at Midway School. Her students were very special to her. Mrs. Wilson gave private lessons at Holiday, TX and at her home while living in Bowie. She was a member of the Church of the Nazarene in Bowie. She loved the Lord and His music best and was the church pianist until she was 80 years old. She also played the piano at Arbor House and Lakeridge Place where she was living. She loved her family and was truly a wonderful Christian mother, grandmother, sister, and friend.
Services were held on Friday, May 31, 2002 at 10:00 a.m. at the Church of the Nazarene in Bowie with Rev. Paul Naeve and Dr. David Sabine officiating. Interment followed in the Elmwood Cemetery under the direction of Fry Funeral Home.
Survivors include: two sons, Tommy Ashley and his wife Shirley of DeLeon, TX and Loyd Ashley of Antelope, TX; one daughter, Jeanne Daniels and her husband Charlie of Wichita Falls, TX; nine grandchildren, Steve and Jeff, Loyd Jr., Lisa, Teresa, Carol Ann, Lonnita Peters, Rodney Moore and Stacey Lopez; eighteen great-grandchildren; one sister, Patti Burgess of Arlington, TX; and one brother, Fred Carr of Buffalo Springs, TX. Mrs. Wilson was preceded in death by her parents, Virginia and J.T. Carr, Sr; one sister, Betty Tindol; and one brother, J.T. Carr, Jr.
Pallbearers were: Steve Ashley, Jeff Ashley, Loyd Ashley Jr., Rodney Moore, Mark Peters, and Jesse Lopez.
Wanda Elizabeth Stout
Wanda Elizabeth Stout, 91, of Nocona, TX passed away on May 30, 2002.
Mrs. Stout was born on June 11, 1910 in Collin County, TX to Hogan Worth and Gertie Mae Hart Witt. She married Ira Stout on March 30, 1930 in Waurika, OK. She was a homemaker and a member of Ringgold Baptist Church.
Funeral services for Mrs. Stout were held on Saturday, June 1, 2002 at 2:00 p.m. at Ringgold Baptist Church with Rev. Worth Hewitt and Rev. Eldon Johnson officiating. Interment was held in Ringgold Cemetery under the direction of Jerry Woods Funeral Home.
Surviving relatives include: one son, Melton Ray Stout, Arlington, TX; one sister, Ruth Hewitt, Tomball, TX; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Mrs. Stout was preceded in death by her husband, Ira Stout, on July 3, 1990.
Pallbearers included: Paul Alcorn, Johnny Choate, Kent Hanson, Jerry Walker, Kenneth Witt and Johnny Witt.
Jewell Edgar Shurbet
Jewell Edgar Shurbet, 54, of Bridgeport, TX passed away on May 22, 2002.
Mr. Shurbet was born on June 26, 1947 in Bowie, TX. He served in the U.S. Navy during Vietnam. He was a truck driver and a member of the Baptist faith.
Graveside services for Mr. Shurbet were held on Friday, May 24, 2002 at Sunset Cemetery with Rev. Joe Motsenbocker officiating.
Surviving relatives included: his mother, Geneva May; three sons, Charles Shurbet, James O.B. Shurbet and Chris Matheson; one daughter, Misty Miller, three sisters, Minnie Jennings, Nona Leek and Elaine Sipes; and eight grandchildren. Mr. Shurbet was preceded in death by his father, O.B. Shurbet.
Pallbearers included: Buddy Callaway, Curtis Plumley, Gary Pryor, Steven Shurbet, Don Stokes and Red Christerson.
Helen Frances (Edwards) Knight
Helen Frances (Edwards) Knight, 83, of Saint Jo, TX passed away on May 31, 2002 at Muenster Memorial Hospital.
Mrs. Knight was born on September 20, 1918 in Montgomery, AL to Edward and Johnnie Eudora Edwards. She worked as a secretary and was a life long member of the Methodist Church. In years past, she was a member of Rebecca Lodge and the Eastern Star. She loved sports, cats and her grandchildren . She also loved the good people of "Meal on Wheels."
Funeral services for Mrs. Knight were directed by McCoy Funeral Home.
Surviving relatives include: one daughter, Helen Botello, Saint Jo, TX; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and one sister, Cecil Dunning, Huntsville, AL. She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Knight.
Frances M. Smith
Frances M. Smith, 90, of Grandbury, TX passed away on June 2, 2002 in Fort Worth, TX.
Mrs. Smith was born on February 6, 1912 in Vernon, TX to Harry and Jessie Chitwood Fletcher. She spent her childhood in Vernon and married Roy Bailey Smith on September 19, 1930 in Altus, OK. Frances and Roy moved to a farm in Boonesville, TX in 1960 where they enjoyed many years of raising beef, pork, chicken, milk cows, pecans, fruits and vegetables of which they shared with any and everyone that came by.
Funeral services for Mrs. Smith were held on Tuesday, June 4, 2002 at 10:00 a.m. at Fry Funeral Home Chapel in Bowie, TX with Rev. Larry "Butch" Erwin officiating. Interment was held in Eastview Cemetery in Vernon, Texas.
Surviving relatives include: two sons, Rip Smith, Ruidosa, NM and Hoppy Smith, Bedford, TX; two brothers, Clifford Fletcher, Oklahoma City, OK and Harry Fletcher, Jr., Yukon, OK; six grandchildren; thirteen great-grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; two special sisters-in-law, Barbara and Mutt Fletcher; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by her parents, Harry Fletcher, Sr. and Jessie Chitwood Fletcher; two brothers, Johnny and Leo Fletcher; and her husband, Roy Smith in May of 1989.
Pallbearers included: Curtis Smith, Phillip Smith, Doyle Edwards, Steve Lane, Jason Dozier and Riley Thompson.
