Laverne Pittman
Laverne Pittman, age 85, of Bridgeport, TX passed away January 8, 2004 in Bridgeport, TX.
Mrs. Pittman was born April 17, 1918 in Sunset, TX to Mr. and Mrs. Lee Blaylock. She married E.L. Pittman on November 2, 1936 in Sunset, TX. She was a lifetime resident of Sunset, TX before moving to Bridgeport, TX two years ago.She was a longtime member of the First Assembly of God Church in Sunset, TX. She was a seamstress and a supervisor at the Howard Woolf Dress Factory in Bowie until her retirement.
Funeral services were held Saturday, January 10, 2004 at 10:30 a.m. at the First Baptist Church of Sunset with Rev. Tim Neely and Rev. Charles Reed officiating. Interment was at the Smyrna Cemetery in Sunset, TX.
Surviving relatives include: three daughters, Eloise Willet, Sunset, TX, Elaine Kasner, Bridgeport, TX and Elwanda Turlington, Sunset, TX; two sons, Curtis Pittman, Sheridan, TX and Keith Pittman, Bridgeport, TX; twenty-three grandchildren; thirty-three great grandchildren; six great great grandchildren; one great great great grandson; two sisters, Florine Pittman, Bowie, TX and Nell Campbell, Langdon, ND; numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, E.L. Pittman; her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Lee Blaylock; two brothers, Alton and Elmo Blaylock; one grandson, Curtis Brent Pittman; and one great grandson, Zachry David Turlington.
Pallbearers included: Dexter Agee, Louie Lowrance, Bennie Motley, Biff Huddleston, Kenneth Fowler, Gordon Wade, Danny Russell and Jerry Hall.
T.S. Grimsley, Jr.
T.S. Grimsley Jr. age 89, of Ringgold, TX passed away January 9, 2004 at the Bowie Memorial Hospital in Bowie, TX.
Mr. Grimsley was born April 12, 1914 to Linnie Tave and Thomas S. Grimsley. He married Coy Lee Howard on March 8, 1935 in Terral, OK. He was a rancher and a farmer and of the Pentecostal faith.
Funeral services for Mr. Grimsley were held Monday, January 12, 2004 at 11:00 a.m. at the Jerry Woods Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Weldon Wright officiating. Interment was at the Ringgold Cemetery under the directions of Jerry Woods Funeral Home.
Surviving relatives include: his wife, Coy Lee Grimsley, Ringgold, TX; two sons, Wayne Grimsley and Leon Grimsley, Ringgold, TX; and two daughters, Billie Fay Grimsley, Keller, TX and Donna Lotter, Colleyville, TX; nine grandchildren; seventeen great grandchildren; and six great great grandchildren.
Pallbearers included: Jerry Walker, Jimmy Franklin, Larry Fenoglio, Sonny Fenoglio, Malcolm Cagle and Jonnie Reynolds.
Joyce Elizabeth Whatley
Joyce Elizabeth Whatley, age 69, of Bowie, TX passed away December 23, 2003 at her residence in Bowie, TX.
Mrs. Whatley was born August 26, 1934 in Pennsylvania. She married Ernest B. Whatley on December 11, 1954 in Liberty, TX. She was a homemaker and a member of the Baptist faith.
A private graveside committal service was held for Mrs. Whatley.
Surviving relatives include: one daughter, Cheryl Rivera, Bowie, TX; three sons, Mike, Phillip and Jerry Whatley, all of Bowie, TX; five grandchildren; four brothers, Phillip and Robert Tucker, both of Houston, TX and Millard and Melton Tucker, both of Bowie, TX; a special friend, Allie Stephens, Bowie, TX; on sister-in-law, Ruth Shaw, Palestine, TX; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Lemuel Petty Mitchell
Lemuel Petty Mitchell, age 82, of Mathis, TX passed away December 23, 2003 in Mathis, TX.
Mr. Mitchell was born April 1, 1921 in Saint Jo, TX to Jewel Lillian Petty and Lemuel Albert Mitchell. He married Katharine Inez Mitchell April 3, 1943. He graduated from high school in Ringgold, TX and went on to attend college on a basketball scholarship at Tarleton State University in Stephenville, TX. He later played basketball for the Air Force. He was a decorated WWII Air Force Veteran who piloted a C-47 Transport plane in 183 combat missions, including the dropping of paratroopers onto Normandy Beach during the D-Day Invasion. He achieved a rank of Captain while on active duty and later became a Major in the Air Force Reserves. He worked in management for various Major Oil Refineries in the Houston area and was also a Job Superintendent for the building of the Nuclear Power plant near Granbury, TX. In retirement he first returned home to Ringgold where he maintained a small cattle ranch, the later moved to Kerrvile and finally retiring to Mathis, TX. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Mathis, TX.
Funeral services for Mr. Mitchell were held Saturday, December 27, 2003 at 10:00 a.m. at the First Baptist Church in Ringgold, TX with Rev. Bob Caperton officiating. Interment was at the Ringgold Cemetery under the direction of Scott Morris Funeral Home. A memorial service in Mathis is to be announced at a later date.
Surviving relatives include: his wife, Katharine Inez Mitchell, Mathis, TX; his children, Lemuel Dean Mitchell, Kerrville, TX, Dewey Albert Mitchell, San Antonio, TX and Katy Jean Blevins, Wichita Falls, TX; twelve grandchildren; fifteen great grandchildren; one sister Christine McAllister, Houston, TX. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lemuel and Jewel Mitchell; his siblings, James Edwin and Pauline.
In Lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to The American Heart Association in his memory.
Viola Lancaster
Viola Lancaster, age 88, of Bowie, TX passed away December 16, 2003 in the Bellmire Home in Bowie, TX.
Mrs. Lancaster was born October 25, 1915 in Salona, TX. She married W.H. Lancaster on May 28, 1936 in Bowie, TX. She was a resident of Bowie for seventy-three years. She retired from the Bowie Public Schools as the school cafeteria manager after twenty-nine years of service. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Bowie, TX where she was a member of the Homemakers Sunday School Class and also helped to organize the Energetics of First Baptist Church.
Funeral services for Mrs. Lancaster were held Friday, December 19, 2003 at 2:00 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in Bowie, TX with Rev. Ben Wiseman officiating. Interment was at Elmwood Cemetery under the direction of Fry Funeral Home.
Surviving relatives include: one son, Jerry Lancaster, Bowie, TX; four grandchildren; two step grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, W.H. Lancaster; and two sons Dan Lancaster in 1999 and Dale Lancaster in 1949.
Pallbearers included: Rick Lancaster, Robert Lancaster, Jeff Lancaster, Gary Paul Lancaster, Carlton Coleman, Randy Wassermann and Kenny Robertson.

Katie Fitts McElhannon
Katie Fitts McElhannon, age 94, of Dallas, TX passed away December 27, 2003 in Dallas, TX.
Mrs. McElhannon was born February 12, 1909 in Belcherville, TX to Frances Rich and Lee Fitts. She was former owner of Popular Dry Goods and was a member of the First Baptist Church in Nocona, TX. She was a life member of the Nocona O.E.S. # 62.
Funeral services for Mrs. McElhannon were held Tuesday, December 30, 2003 at 2:00 at the Jerry Woods Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Brian Parks officiating. Interment was at the Nocona Cemetery under the direction of Jerry Woods Funeral Home.
Surviving relatives include: two sons, Bill McElhannon, Dallas, TX, James McElhannon, Rhome, TX; four grandchildren; and six great grandchildren.
Pallbearers included: Jimmy Fitts, Earl Fitts, Jim McElhannon, Matt McElhannon, Mark McElhannon and Brad McElhannon. Honorary pallbearers included: Jerry Woods, Donald Sewell, Billy Brown, C.W. Chandler, James Goldsmith and Tommy Uselton.
“Toots” Maxine Berry Clark
“Toots” Maxine Berry Clark, age 90, of Keller, TX passed away December 27, 2003.
Mrs. Clark was born September 21, 1913 in Nocona, TX to Lula B and Roy Berry. She married Hines Clark in 1936. She was a member of the Nocona Hills Bridge Club and of the First United Methodist Church in Nocona.
Funeral services for Mrs. Clark were held Tuesday, December 30, 2003 at the First United Methodist Church with Rev. Keith Barbee officiating. Interment was at the Nocona Cemetery under the direction of Scott Morris Funeral Home.
Surviving relatives include: her children, Larry Clark, Keller, TX and Kelly Clark, Dallas, TX; four grandchildren; and three great grandchildren.
Bertha Alma Underwood
Bertha Alma Underwood, age 94 of Altus, OK passed away December 26, 2003.
Mrs. Underwood was born August 19, 1909 in Arkansas to Ella Bell Hudson and George Tipton. She married Claude Underwood on September 5, 1925 in Montague, TX. She was a homemaker and of the Baptist faith.
Funeral services for Mrs. Underwood were held Saturday, December 27, 2003 at 2:00 p.m. at the Jerry Woods Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Boyd Whitehead officiating. Interment was at the Nocona Cemetery under the direction of Jerry Woods Funeral Home.
Surviving relatives include: her children, Thelma Singer, Tulip, TX, Pat Skinner, Burkburnett, TX, Lavonya Hughen and Sybil Hollenbeck, both of Altus, OK, and Sue Nash, Del City, OK; sixteen grandchildren; twenty-seven great grandchildren; eight great great grandchildren; and one sister, Myrtle Ruth Walls, Nocona, TX. She was preceded in death by her husband, Claude Underwood on August, 25, 1968; one son, Odas Underwood; one daughter, Ruby Kollman; one infant daughter; and two brothers, Ollie Tipton and Floyd Tipton.
