Peggy Ellen Underwood
Peggy Ellen Underwood, 60, of Austin, TX passed away on March 17, 2003 in Austin, TX.
Mrs. Underwood was born on March 20, 1942 in Hollywood, CA to June and Frank Underwood. She was a former Bowie resident. She received her undergraduate degree and law degree from the University of Texas in 1967 and has practiced law in Austin, TX since that time. Mrs. Underwood was a well known activist in Texas politics and was of the Episcopal faith. She was well known in the music world and was an avid supporter of folk music.
A memorial service was held on Friday, March 21, 2003 at First United Methodist Church in Bowie, TX at 2:00 p.m. Memorials in her name can be made to the Bowie Education Foundation.
Survivors include: one daughter, Dr. Sally Beth Conner, Dallas, TX; one son, Barton Brooks, Austin, TX; one brother, Gregory L. Underwood of Bowie, TX; two grandchildren, Aidan and Liam Conner; several nieces and nephews; and numerous friends and relatives.
James Zachry
James Zachry, age 73 of Bowie, Texas, passed away on March 18, 2003 in Bowie.
Mr. Zachry was a resident of Euless, TX for 25 years and then a longtime resident of Saint Jo, before moving to Bowie 9 years ago. He was born on January 5, 1930 in Cookietown, OK. He was a truck driver. Mr. Zachry married Betty Lou Moore on August 22, 1976 in Clayton, NM. He was of the Baptist faith. He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict and was a member of the Speake-Meyer American Legion Post #252 in Bowie.
Services for Mr. Zachry were held on March 22, 2003 at 2:00 p.m. at the Fry Funeral Home in Bowie with Rev. Don Hendrix officiating. Interment was held in the Briar Creek Cemetery in Bowie.
Survivors include: his wife, Berry Zachry of Bowie; mother of his children, Joyce Zachry of Arlington; two daughters, Betty Ellen Norton of Houston and Janie Zachry of Arlington; three sons, Frankie Zachry and Gary Hoglan, both of Euless and James Zachry of Irving; seven grandchildren, three great grandchildren; two sisters, Mildred O’Neal and Bea Mitchell, both of Irving; two brothers, Dale Zachry of Grand Prairie and Gene Zachry of Durant, OK; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers were: Larry Zachry, Danny Ray O’Neal, Jerry Zachry, Rusty Zachry, Patrick O’Neal and Brad Zachry.
Honorary pallbearers were: Mark Bivens and Ronny Graham.
Joel G. Whitson
Joel G. Whitson, age 65, a lifetime resident of Sunset, TX, passed away on March 21, 2003 in Sunset.
Mr. Whiteson was born on July 20, 1937 in Jacksboro, TX. He retired as a dispatcher for Lone Star Industries in 1980 after 17 years of service. Mr. Whitson married Nell Moore on June 28, 1958 at Ardmore, OK.
Services for Mr. Whiteson were held on March 24, 2003 at 11:00 a.m. at Fry Funeral Home with Rev. Charles Reed officiating. Interment was in Sunset Cemetery.
Survivors include: wife, Nell Whitson of Sunset; one son, Ronald Jo Whitson of Sunset; one granddaughter, Tara Whitson of Sunset; two uncles, Marvin Baker and Truman Baker, both of Bowie; several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his mother Ruth Whitson in 1991 and his father George Whitson in 1939.
Pallbearers were Louie Lowrance, Charlie Thomason, Biff Huddleston, Jack Ezzell, Wayne McConnell and Keith Green.
Honorary pallbearers were D.J. Rater, Emanuel Willett, Arthur Avante, Kenneth Howerton, Colby Elrod and Bob Fain.
Paul D. Shepherd
Paul D. Shepherd, age 67, of Bowie, TX, passed away on March 20, 2003 in Bowie.
Mr. Shepherd was born on January 1, 1936 in Guymon, OK. He was a longtime resident of Richardson, TX before moving to Bowie 25 years ago. He was a letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service. He married Jackie Worthy on July 4, 1964 in Addison, TX. Mr. Shepherd was a member of the Prairie Branch Country Church in Bowie. He was the first baby born in Guymon, OK in 1936. He was instrumental in the building of the Prairie Branch Country Church. He was secretary of the Board of Directors at Top O’ The Lake Country Club and a member of the Top O’ The Lake Country Club for 25 years, a member of the Senior Oil Belt Golf Association, and a member of the Amon Carter Water Board Association. He retired in 1999 from the U.S. Postal Service after 25 years service in Henrietta and Bowie. He also served in the U.S. Marine Corps.
Services for Mr. Shepherd were held on March 23, 2003 at 2:30 p.m. at the Bluegrove Baptist Church with Rev. Bill McKee officiating. Internment was held in the Bluegrove Cemetery under the direction of Fry Funeral Home.
Survivors include: wife, Jackie Shepherd of Bowie; one son, Scott Shepherd of Dallas; three brothers, Cotton Shepherd, John Shepherd and Tony Shepherd, all of Bluegrove; one sister, Jacquetta Graves of Henrietta; numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents Bill Shepherd in 1993 and Viola Shepherd in 1998.
Pallbearers were Dewayne Hamilton, Roy Stanley, Clyde Campbell, Truman Duke, Lee Wayne Jones and Greg Vicars.
Honorary pallbearers were Wallace Rhoades, Rusty Allred, Arcue Deweber, Terry Bradfield, Curtis Eudey and active and retired employees of the Bowie Post Office.
Thomas Whitecotton, Sr., 61, a fifty-one year resident of Bowie, TX, passed away on March 22, 2003 in Fort Worth, TX.
He was born November 23, 1941 in Montague, TX. Mr. Whitecotton married Carolyn Ann Brodie on July 6, 1964 in Henrietta, TX. He was a concrete finisher and a member of Rock Springs Community Church in Rock Springs, Tx.
Services for Mr. Whitecotton will be on Thursday, March 27, 2003 at 2:00 p.m. at Fry Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Jamie Reed officiating. Interment will follow in Montague Cemetery, Montague, TX.
Pallbearers include: Jack Glover, Oland Thomas Whitecotton, Jr., F.D. "Maruin" Jones, Joe Rickard, Juan Gloria and Jerry Milam.
Survivors include: his wife, Carolyn of Bowie, TX; one son, Oland Thomas Whitecotton, Jr. of Milden Hall Air Base, England; four daughters, Alma Ann Gloria, Virginia Ann Richard, Donna Kay Burkhalter and Sherry Lynn Jones, all of Bowie, TX; sixteen grandchildren; and one brother, Billy James Whitecotton of LaGuna Vista, TX.
Ruth V. Elkins
Ruth V. Elkins, age 62 of Bowie, Texas, passed away on February 16, 2003 at Bowie Memorial Hospital.
Mrs. Elkins was born on July 14, 1940 in Lancaster, Washington. She was a longtime resident of Endicott, Washington before moving to Bowie three years ago. Mrs. Elkins was a homemaker and a member of the Calvary Baptist Church in Bowie. She married Clyde Elkins on February 15, 1959 at Seattle, Washington.
Services were held on February 19, 2003 at 2:00 p.m. at the Calvary Baptist Church with Rev. Ron Abbot officiating. Interment was in the Buffalo Springs Cemetery under the direction of Fry Funeral Home.
Survivors include: her husband, Clyde J. Elkins of Bowie; one son, Albert E. Elkins of Colfax, Washington; five grandchildren, Mellissa Mae Elkins, Erin Rochelle Elkins and Lucas Thomas Elkins, all of Endicott, Washington and Mellissa Eklins and Loren Elkins, both of Colfax, Washington; one sister, Carolyn Bertalotto of Prairie City, Oregon and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by one daughter, Mellissa Mae Elkins in 1964.
Pallbearers were: Billy Tasker, Jerry McLendon, Joe Wadsworth, David Sisco, Buz Mattix and Don Haney.
Honorary pallbearers were: Patrick Foster and Donnie Raines.
Kirk M. Walker
Kirk M. Walker, 68, of Bowie, TX passed away on February 20, 2003 at Harris Hospital in Fort Worth, Texas.
Mr. Walker was born on June 26, 1934 in Lindale, TX. He was owner of Whites Magneto and Supply Co. in Bowie, TX from 1953 - 1987. He was also a Magneto repairman in the oil field industry. Mr. Walker served in the U.S. Army and was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Bowie, TX and the Adult Sunday School Class. He was former president of the Bowie Chamber of Commerce and was a Little League Baseball Coach for many years.
Funeral services for Mr. Walker were held on Sunday, February 23, 2003 at 3:00 p.m. at Calvary Baptist Church in Bowie, TX with Rev. Ron Abbott and Rev. Terry Harralson officiating. Interment was held in Tage Cemetery in Bowie, TX under the direction of Fry Funeral Home.
Surviving relatives include: one son, Kevin Walker, Carlsbad, NM; three grandson, Dustin Walker, Weatherford, TX, Riley Walker, Carlsbad, NM and Trevor Walker, Bowie, TX; two brothers, James Lewis Walker, Lawton, OK and Robert Lee Walker, Bowie, TX; one sister, Sara Jane McCarty, Longview, TX; numerous nieces and nephews; and one special friend, Mrs. Carla Jo Johnson, Bowie, TX. Mr. Walker was preceded in death by his wife, Velda Walker on November 9, 1996; one son, Bradley Keith Walker on April 25, 1996; and his parents, Lewis E. and Hazel Walker.
Pallbearers included: Bill Lee, Dustin Walker, Gary Meyer, Kenny Mowery, Rick Staley and Curtis Wells. Honorary pallbearers included: Bill Phillips, Paul Penaluna, Archie McMahon, Ed Thomas, Jimmy Moore, Wallace Rhoades, Q.O. Williamson, Robert Pope, Charles Smith, Harold Haney, and Don Sewell.
Mary Martha Hutson
Mary Martha Hutson, 92, of Nocona, TX passed away on February 23, 2003 at Nocona General Hospital.
Mrs. Hutson was born on August 20, 1910 in Madill, OK to John and Becky Smith Larison. She was a homemaker and married Virgil Hutson. Mrs. Hutson was a member of the Church of Christ faith.
Funeral services for Mrs. Hutson were held on Wednesday, February 26, 2003 at 10 a.m. at Scott Morris Chapel with Rev. Johnny Hutson officiating. Interment was held in Spanish Fort Cemetery.
Surviving relatives include: one daughter, Mary Lou Meyers, Belcherville, TX; one son, V.W. Hutson, Nocona, TX; ten grandchildren; sixteen great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. Mrs. Hutson was preceded in death by her husband, Virgil Hutson in 1998; two sons, James and Johnny Hutson; and one great-grandson, Zachary Mitchell.
