Lavern W. "Jack" Johnson
Lavern W. "Jack" Johnson, 81, of Itasca, TX, passed away on May 3, 2003 at Itasca Nursing Home.
Mr. Johnson was born on February 27, 1922 in Henrietta, TX. He was a member of the Stoneburg Baptist Church. He lived in Stoneburg and attended Stoneburg schools graduating in 1941. He served in the U.S. Coast Guard in 1943. Mr. Johnson was a thirty three year resident of Bowie, TX and was a retired farmer.
Graveside services for Mr. Johnson were held Tuesday, May 6, 2003 at 11:00 a.m. at Oak Hill Cemetery with Rev. Larry Kennedy officiating, under the direction of Fry Funeral Home.
Surviving relatives include: two brothers, Joe E. Johnson, Richardson, TX and James W. Johnson, Fort Worth, TX; one sister, Lazelle Isbon, Arlington, TX; several nephews and one niece.
M.J. Clines
M.J. Clines, 72, of Nocona, TX, passed away on May 3, 2003 at Nocona, TX.
Mr. Clines was born on November 15, 1930 in Tolbert, TX, to Wade H. and Evie Mae Sims Clines. He married Betty Scott on September 20, 1974 in Wichita Falls, TX. He was a retired aircraft mechanic (Shepherd A.F.B.). He served in the US Navy during the Korean War.
Funeral services for Mr. Clines were held on Monday, May 5, 2003 at 10:30 a.m. at Jerry Woods Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Kenneth Maher officiating. Interment was at the Nocona Cemetery. Jerry Woods Funeral Home directed.
Surviving relatives include: his wife, Betty Clines, Nocona, TX; one son, Stan Clines, Wichita Falls, TX; two daughters, Julia Schmidt, LaPorte, TX, Jill Robinson, LaPorte, TX; one stepdaughter, Kathy Scholl, Iowa Park, TX, and one stepson Scott Burns, Iowa Park, TX; two sisters, Lucile Wakeley, Nocona, TX, and Opal McKay, Mathis, TX; fifteen grandchildren; and 3 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife Julia Clines in 1963; one daughter, Valerie Clines in 1964; one son, Terry Clines in 1991; three brothers; and one sister.
Pallbearers included: Jerry Petty, Winford McKay, John Scholl, Harley Clines, and Efrain Hernandez.
Mr. Louis A. Lawson
Mr. Louis A. Lawson, 80, of Bowie, TX, passed away on May 2, 2003 at Bowie Memorial Hospital.
Mr. Lawson was born on June 27, 1922 in Post, TX . He married Vera Belle Winters on February 14, 1942 in Vashti, TX. He was a longtime resident of Vashti, TX before moving to Bowie, TX in 1959. He was a field supervisor in the oil field industry. He was a member of First Free Will Baptist Church and was a lifetime member of the Reddy-McClellan VFW Post #8789 in Bowie, TX. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during WWII, of which 32 months was overseas.
Funeral services for Mr. Lawson were held on Sunday, May 4, 2003 at 4:00 p.m. at First Free Will Baptist Church in Bowie with Dr. Larry Cox officiating. Interment was in the Vashti Cemetery under the direction of Fry Funeral Home.
Surviving relatives include: his wife, Vera Belle Lawson, Bowie,TX; three daughters, Jenyne Fenoglio, Bellevue, TX, Janis Gary, Arlington, TX, Belinda Jobe, Vernon, TX; five grandchildren, Marsha Hanson and Cinny Terry, Bellevue, TX, Tammy Dicken, Wichita Falls, TX, Sgt. Janet Gary, Kuwait, Jeremy Browning, Irving, TX; eight grandchildren; one sister, Evelyn Fox, Bowie, TX; numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Karen Lawson; and two grandsons, Ben and John Gary.
Pallbearers included: Richard Fenoglio, Bobby Terry, Mark Hanson, Jeremy Browning, Matt Hanson, and Colby Shankle. Honorary pallbearers included: nephews from both of the Lawson and Winter’s families.

Billy Leonidas Upshaw
Billy Leonidas Upshaw, 78, of Bowie, TX passed away on May 3, 2003 in Bowie Memorial Hospital.
Mr. Upshaw was born on March 9, 1925 in Manitou, OK to Bryan Augustus Upshaw and Pearl Mae Suttles Upshaw.
Graveside services for Mr. Upshaw were held at 1:00 p.m. on May 5, 2003 at the Dye Mound Cemetery with C.E. Cole officiating. McCoy Funeral Home directed the service.
Surviving relatives include: one sister, Frances Parsons, Saint Jo, TX; one brother, Leroy Upshaw, Wichita Falls, TX; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Bryan Augustus Upshaw and Pearl Mae (Suttles) Upshaw; and one brother, David "Slim" Parsons.
Lota Vance Blue
Lota Vance Blue, 78, of Montague, Texas, passed away on May 6, 2003 in Bowie Memorial Hospital.
Mr. Blue was born on February 29, 1925 in Fort Worth, Texas to Meredith and Nettie Reid Blue. He married Margaret Marie Duke on February 20, 1943 in Montague County, Texas. He was a mechanic and worked for Earl Richardson’s Garage in Montague.
Graveside services for Mr. Blue were held on May 8, 2003 at 10:00 a.m. at the Starkey Cemetery under the direction of Scott-Morris Funeral Home.
Survivors include: one son, Jimmy Blue of Montague, TX; one daughter, Geneva Bailey of Nocona, TX; and four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Ila Faye Hankins
Ila Faye Hankins, 90, of Bowie, Texas, passed away on May 7, 2003 at Bellmire Healthcare Facilities.
Mrs. Hankins was born on April 29, 1913 in Buffalo Springs, Texas. She was a homemaker. Mrs. Hankins married Joe Burton Hankins on April 20, 1935 in Henrietta. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Bowie where she was a member of the Homemakers Sunday School Class. Mr. and Mrs. Hankins celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on April 20, 1985. She worked for many years in children’s activities, such as Sunbeams, Training Union, and Vacation Bible School at First Baptist Church. Mrs. Hankins was a resident of Bowie for 75 years.
Funeral services for Mrs. Hankins were held on May 9, 2003 at 2:00 p.m. at the First Baptist Church with Dr. Ronnie Lawson and Rev. Dick Hennings officiating. Burial was in the Elmwood Cemetery under the direction of Fry Funeral Home.
Survivors include: one son, Ronnie Hankins of Bowie, TX; one daughter, Sue Reynolds of Jacksboro, TX; six grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild; two sisters, Beulah Mershon and Bobbie Brokaw, both of Bowie, TX; one brother, Dub Cozart of Dallas, TX; two sisters-in-law, Hazel Cozart of Midland, TX and Wanda Hankins of Staton, TX; and numerous nieces and nephew. Mrs. Hankins was preceded in death by her husband, Joe Hankins in 1989; one grand child, Cody Joe Reynolds; one great grandchild, Logan Hankins and four brothers.
Pallbearers were: Kenny Hankins, Trey Reynolds, Steve Hankins, Billy Sanders, Chris Hankins and Mike Ward.
Don Earl Brooks
Don Earl Brooks, 63, of Nocona, Texas passed away on May 5, 2003.
Mr. Brooks was born on November 21, 1939 in Montague County, TX to Earl and Donnie Montgomery Brooks. He married Avia Molsbee on February 14, 1965 in Waurika, OK. He was a bootmaker and a member of the Church of the Brethren. Mr. Brooks was a member and Past Master of the Nocona Masonic Lodge #753 A.F. & A.M.
Funeral services for Mr. Brooks were held on May 8, 2003 at 2:00 p.m. at the Church of the Brethren with Rev. Don Hendrix officiating. Interment was held in Molsbee Chapel Cemetery under the direction of Jerry Woods Funeral Home.
Surviving relatives include: His wife, Avia Brooks of Nocona, TX; one son, Bryon Brooks of Sweet Home, OR; one daughter, Melissa Wadlow of Nocona, TX; and four grandchildren.
Pallbearers included: Wes Morton, Tommy Lewis Hancock, Dale Linn, Bob Langford, Jimmy Kennedy and Jack McBride.
Patsy Joyce Edwards
Patsy Joyce Edwards, 46, of Nocona, Texas, passed away on May 10,2003 in Nocona General Hospital.
Mrs. Edwards was born on February 14, 1956 in Gainesville, Texas to John Howard and Anna Lee Gillingwater Smith. She married Jimmy Dale Edwards on November 30, 1973 in Nocona, Texas. She was a Charter Member and a Sunday school teacher at Bible Baptist Church. Mrs. Edwards was a homemaker and worked for Motley’s Leather and Nokona Athletic Goods.
Funeral services for Mrs. Edwards were held on May 13, 2003 at 2:00 p.m. at Bethel Baptist Church with Rev. Roy Martin officiating. Burial was in the Nocona Cemetery under the direction of Scott-Morris Funeral Home.
Survivors include: husband, Jimmy Dale Edwards of Nocona, TX; two sons, Coty Wayne Edwards and Jimmy Lee Edwards, both of Nocona, TX; two sisters, Linda Kimbrough of Jefferson, TX and Sandra Warren of Denton, TX; one brother, Billy Smith of Denton, TX; and four grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one sister, Mary Sweeney and one brother, Samuel Smith.
