Ruth Ila Pickett
Ruth Ila Pickett, 93, of Nocona, TX passed away May 22, 2003 at Nocona General Hospital.
Mrs. Pickett was born on December 19, 1909 in Nocona to Lucinda Barnett and Mansel L. Vaughn. She was preceded in death by her husband, James H. Gresham in 1935 and married Ed F. Pickett and together they owned and managed stores in Bulcher and Saint Jo. He died in 1971. Then Mrs. Pickett went to work for Linda Jo Shoe Company in Gainesville. She was a Baptist.
Graveside services for Mrs. Pickett were held on Friday, May 23, 2003 at 10 a.m. at Nocona Cemetery with Rev. Scott Moore officiating. Services were directed by Scott-Morris Funeral Home.
Surviving relatives include: one daughter, Pat Gresham Cook Archer City, TX; one step-daughter, Imogene Pickett Ervin, Carlsbad, NM; one step-son, Ed F. Pickett, Jr., Livingston, TX; two grandchildren, Kay Cook Bailey, Oregon and Stephanie Cook Temple, Illinois; and three great grandchildren, Madeline Bailey, Charlie and Jenna Temple.
Memorials may be made to the Nocona Cemetery Association.
Glenn Walker
Glenn Walker, 90, of Nocona, TX passed away May 24, 2003 at Nocona Nursing Home.
Mr. Walker was born on August 15, 1912 in Nocona to Maud V. Benton and Luther Columbus Walker. He married Lois Emery Walker, who passed away on October 21, 1995. Mr. Walker was a faithful and active member of the First United Methodist in Nocona, TX until his health made it impossible to attend. He served on the Board of Stewards, as a Trustee, an Usher for over 30 years, and in a number of other positions in the church through the years. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge for over 60 years. Mr. Walker worked in the shipping department of Nocona Boot Company before becoming bookkeeper for Buster Gibson’s Feed Store. He also worked for Scott-Morris Hardware Store.
Funeral services for Mr. Walker were held on Monday, May 26, 2003 at 2:00 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church with Rev. Keith Barbee officiating. Burial was in the Nocona Cemetery under the direction of Scott-Morris Funeral Home.
Surviving relatives include: nieces and nephews, Sara and Tom King, Denton, TX; Reba and Donnie McCool, Graham, TX; Sue Reid, Wichita Falls, TX; Joyce Freeman, Saint Jo, TX; Jim Sewell, Salado, TX; Monte Walker, DeSota, TX; Nicki Savage, Havelock, NC; Larry Walker, New Orleans, LA; and J.D. Phyllis Maureen Bishop
Phyllis Maureen Bishop, 69, of Mena, AR passed away May 25, 2003 at Mena Medical Center.
Mrs. Bishop was born January 23, 1934 to Lula Belle Black and Lee Craddock Cardwell. She married Roger Bishop on August 9, 1955 in Bowie, TX. She was a nurse’s aide, and a longtime Sunday school teacher. She served with her husband in the pastoring of churches in Bismark, ND, Bay City, TX, Appleton, WI, and the latest at the Acorn Baptist Church in Acorn, AR.
Funeral services for Mrs. Bishop were held Wednesday, May 28, 2003, at 11:00 a.m. with Bro. Roger Bishop, Bro. Alvis Edmondson, Bro. O.D. Oliver, Bro. Jim Northcutt, and Bro. David McCord officiating. Interment was at the Pincrest Memorial Park under the direction of Beasley-Wood Funeral Home.
Surviving relatives include: her husband, Roger Bishop, Mena, AR; her mother, Lula Cardwell, Nocona, TX; two sons, James Steven Bishop, Nocona, TX and David Bishop, Gainesville, TX; one daughter, Glenda Peterson, Mena, AR; one brother, Gary Cardwell, Wichita Falls, TX; one sister, Jackie Galvin, Godfrey, IL; four grandchildren, Holly and Halley Bishop and John and David Peterson; a special family, Terrel Wilson, Jeannie Wilson, Casey Wilson and Lacie Wilson, Palacious, TX; and a host of family and friends. She was preceded in death by her father.
Pallbearers included: Bernie Boyd, Gary Richmond, Andy Boyd, Curt Boyd, Dan Deramus and Scott Bishop. Honorary pallbearers included the men of the Acorn Baptist Church.

Shirley Sue Helms
Shirley Sue Helms, 58, of Denton, TX, passed away May 24, 2003 at her residence.
Mrs. Helms was born in Montague County to Frances Marion and Beulah Jones Frazier. She married Jimmy Helms on June 14, 1964 in Bowie, TX.
Funeral services for Mrs. Helms were held Tuesday, May 27, 2003 at 2:00 p.m. at the DeBerry Funeral Chapel in Denton, TX. Interment was at Fairview Cemetery in Wise County, TX.
Surviving relatives include: two daughters, Julie Crenshaw, Denton, TX and Vickie Gordon, Rockwall; one son, Scotty Helms, Dallas, TX; two sisters, Reba Grottie, Bowie, TX and Dorothy Huddleston, Forestburg, TX; one brother, Jim Frazier, Krum, TX; and five grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jimmy Helms on April 15, 1992; two sons, Jimmy Victor Helms and Cody Wayne Helms.
Carl Shurtleff
Carl Shurtleff, 90, of Bowie, TX, passed away on May 24, 2003 in Bowie Nursing Center.
Mr. Shurtleff was born on June 29, 1912 in Mt. Vernon, TX. He married Jean Parker on November 23, 1933 at McCauley, TX. He was a member of the Church of Christ and a longtime rancher and owned several businesses in Bowie for years.
Graveside services for Mr. Shurtleff were held on Tuesday, May 27, 2003 at 2:00 p.m. at Elmwood Cemetery with Joe Fitch officiating.
Surviving relatives include: his wife, Jean Shurtleff, Bowie, TX; one son, Charles Shurtleff, Sulphur Springs, TX; one daughter, Carla Hamilton, Bowie, TX; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; one sister, Pauline Weaver, Lubbock, TX; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Honorary pallbearers included: Troy Johnson, Jim Hickerson, A.C. Houston, Winfred Lovall, Weldon George and Curtis Garrett.

Billy Ray Sewell
Billy Ray Sewell, 76, of Nocona, TX, passed away June 21, 2003 in Harris Methodist Hospital.
Mr. Sewell was born September 25, 1926 in Nocona, TX to Lura Nelson and Luther Wilton Sewell. He married Frances Baker Sewell. He was an Electrical Engineer for LTV. He served in the United States Navy on a Mine Sweeper in 1946 and was a member of the Ringgold Church of Christ.
Funeral services for Mr. Sewell were held on Tuesday, June 24, 2003 at 10:30 a.m. at the Church of Christ with Larry Daniel and Dale Scott officiating. Interment was at the Long Branch Cemetery.
Surviving relatives include: his wife, Frances Baker Sewell, Nocona, TX; three sons, Kevin Sewell, Hurst, TX, Ty Sewell and Randy Sewell, both of Arlington, TX; one daughter, Shiela Chenault, Hurst, TX; six grandchildren; one great grandchild; and one brother, Donnie Gene Sewell, TX.
Zell Pitt
Zell Pitt, 78, of Grand Prairie, TX, passed away Saturday, June 21, 2003 in an Arlington Hospital.
Mrs. Pitt was born in Bowie, TX. She married H.B. Pitt in February of 1960. She grew up and graduated from Bowie High School. She moved to Grand Prairie where she was an electronic assembler for Rockwell International and retired to take care of her rental property. She was a member of the Westridge Baptist Church and the American Legion Auxiliary.
Graveside services for Mrs. Pitt were held Tuesday, June 24, 2003 at 2:00 p.m. at Elmwood Cemetery with services directed by Fry Funeral Home.
Surviving relatives include: her husband, H.B. Pitt, Grand Prairie, TX; one daughter, Carol Putman, Arlington, TX; one son, Royce Morris, Sunset, TX; four grandchildren; twelve great grandchildren; two sisters, Era Paschall, Keller, TX, and Lois Wesson, AZ; two brothers, Gene May, Bowie, TX, and Weldon May, Corpus Christi, TX; and many nieces, nephews, and friends.
Margie VanZandt Reed
Margie VanZandt Reed, 84, of Iowa Park, TX, passed away June 21, 2003 in Iowa Park.
Mrs. Reed was born June 13, 1919 in Montague County to Emma Florence Roper and Robert Griffin VanZandt. She married Milburn David Reed on August 2, 1937 in Montague, TX. She was a seamstress at Russell Newman Mfg. She was of the Baptist faith.
Funeral services for Mrs. Reed were held Tuesday, June 24, 2003 at 2:00 p.m. at Jerry Woods Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Charles Reed officiating. Interment was at Nocona Cemetery under the direction of Jerry Woods Funeral Home.
Surviving relatives include: one son, Oliver David Reed, Henrietta, TX; two daughters, Barbara Kirkpatrick, Saint Jo, TX, and Joye Farris, Holliday, TX. She was preceded in death by her husband, Milburn David Reed in 1989; and one granddaughter, Gina Capps in 1995.
Pallbearers included: Donny Knabe, Jerry Don Farris, David Ray Farris, David Allen Reed, Christopher Reed and Jeff Mosely.
Clovis Richey
Clovis Richey, age 70, of Bowie, TX, passed away June 22, 2003.
Mr. Richey was born October 1, 1932 in Crafton, TX to Lavada and Ed Richey. He married Pat Langston on August 30, 1952 in Wichita Falls, TX. He was a drilling contractor, and a member of the Central Baptist Church.
Funeral services for Mr. Richey were held Thursday, June 26, 2003 at 10:00 a.m. at the Central Baptist Church with Rev. Paul A. Henderson and Rev. Don Shipman officiating. Interment was at Elmwood Cemetery under the direction of Fry Funeral Home.
Surviving relatives include: his wife, Pat Richey, Bowie, TX; three sons, Ray Richey, Weatherford, TX, Alan Richey, Mansfield, TX, and Royce Richey, Benbrook, TX; five grandchildren; one brother, Joe Richey, Bowie, TX; one sister, Treva Sandefur, Denton, TX; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ed and Lavada Richey; one sister, Brenda Bishop; and two great grandsons.
