Lena Lorene Saylor, 84, of Bowie, TX passed away on February 11, 2002.
Mrs. Saylor was born on October 4, 1917 in Stoneburg, TX. She married Francis Willard Saylor and was a bookeeper/secretary. She was also a member of the First Baptist Church.
Funeral services for Mrs. Saylor were held on Thursday, February 14, 2002 at 2:00 p.m. at Fry Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Dick Hennings officiating. Interment was held in Hopewell Cemetery in Stoneburg.
Surviving relatives include: one son, Danny Butler, Canyon Lake, TX; two step-daughters, Norma Jean Popavich, Galveston, TX and Joyce Yowell, Tyler, TX; one brother, Brock Lyons, Bowie, TX; one sister, Betty Odel, Ft. Worth, TX; three granchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers included: Michael Odle, Neal Odle, Leroy Self, James Butler, Jimmy Butler, Kenneth Butler.
H. A. "Buddy" Vermillion
H. A. "Buddy" Vermillion, 66, of Nocona, TX passed away on February 13, 2002 in Nocona General Hospital.
Mr. Vermillion was born on May 9, 1935 to Armstead and Auby Lee Pirtle Vermillion in Greenfield, TN. He married Eunice Fields on May 5, 1979 in Rockwall, TX. Mr. Vermillion was retired from Lockheed Martin after 22 years. He was a member of the Walnut Street Baptist Church in Nocona and had served in the Army.
Funeral services for Mr. Vermillion were held on Saturday, February 16, 2002 at 11:00 a.m. at Scott-Morris Chapel with Sunny Buckingham and John Hillis officiating. Interment was held in Nocona Cemetery.
Surviving relatives include: his wife, Eunice Vermillion, Nocona, TX; three children, Charlott Lane, Fort Worth, TX, Chuck Moses, Lincoln, NE, and Michele Ritchie, Nocona, TX; two sisters, Mary Kelley, Euless, TX and Mildred Padgett, Duncanville, TX; one brother, Louis "Bob" Vermillion, Grand Prairie, TX; and five grandchildren.
Pallbearers included: Barry Vermillion, Allen Vermillion, Gary Lane, Sherri Walter, Rusty Walter, Sandi Schiele and Cathy Summons. Honorary pallbearers included: Steve Kirby, Red Duell, Elmo Emmons and David Bagley.
Billy James Carpenter
Billy James Carpenter, 72, of Wichita Falls, TX passed away on Saturday, February 16, 2002 in a Wichita Falls hospital.
Mr. Carpenter was born on January 1, 1930 in Post, TX to Edward Francis and Lottye Bell Benge Carpenter. He was retired from Texas Electric. He was a member of the Church of Christ and served in the U.S. National Guard. He married June Roberts on August 23, 1952 in Wichita Falls, TX.
Funeral services for Mr. Carpenter were held on Tuesday, February 19, 2002 at 10:30 a.m. at Jerry Woods Funeral Home with Rev. Bryan Parks officiating. Interment was held in Nocona Cemetery under the direction of Jerry Woods Funeral Home.
Surviving relatives include: his wife, June Carpenter, Wichita Falls, TX; two sons, James Carpenter of Nocona, TX and Brian Carpenter of Lockhart, TX; two sisters, Nelda Neeld of Mt. Vernon, TX and Joy Bratcher of Sterling City, TX; two grandchildren, Cheryl Allison and Jamie Carpenter.
Pallbearers include: Richard Trammell, Don Bowen, Billy Moyer, B.L. Starnes, Don Kirkham, and Robbie Starnes.
He was preceded in death by one son, Charles, on January 17, 1971.
Faris Oscar Nowell
Faris Oscar Nowell, 82, of Nocona, TX passed away on Saturday, February 16, 2002 in a Wichita Falls hospital.
Mr. Nowell was born on April 19, 1919 in Anson, TX to Samuel Oscar and Anna Rebecca Garrett Nowell. He was a member of the Church of Christ and a retired public school administrator. He married Geraldine (Penny) Pennington on September 12, 1940 in Crosbyton, TX.
Funeral services for Mr. Nowell were held on Tuesday, February 19, 2002 at 2:00 p.m. at Church of Christ with Dr. Virgil Trout and Minister Dale Scott officiating. Interment was held in Nocona Cemetery under the direction of Jerry Woods Funeral Home.
Surviving relatives include: his wife, Penny Nowell of Nocona, TX; one son, Marc Nowell of Irving, TX; three daughters, Janice Huddleston of Wichita Falls, TX, Kerry Ellis of Ardmore, OK, and Lynna Summers of Ponca City, OK; 10 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.
Pallbearers include: Ken Huddlenton, Jeffery Huddleston, Chad Ellis, Scott Summers, Kevin Kirkpatric, David Jones, and Zachary Nowell.
Lavada Richey
Lavada Richey, 89, of Bowie, TX passed away on Friday, February 15, 2002 in Bowie Memorial Hospital.
Mrs. Richey was born on May 4, 1912 in Crafton, TX. She married Edgar Hirum Richey on September 23, 1931 in Crafton, TX. She was an upholsterer and a member of Central Baptist Church in Bowie, TX since 1943.
Funeral services for Mrs. Richey were held on Monday, February 18, 2002 at 2:00 p.m. at Central Baptist Church with Rev. Paul Henderson officiating. Interment was held in Elmwood Cemetery under the direction of Fry Funeral Home of Bowie.
Surviving relatives include: two sons, Clovis and Joe Richey, both of Bowie, TX; one daughter, Treva Sandefur, Denton, TX; eleven grandchildren; twenty-two great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Ova Gardner, Bowie, TX and Jo Mercer, Chico, TX; She was preceded in death by her husband, Edgar Hirum Richey and one daughter, Brenda Bishop.
Pallbearers included: Ray Richey, Alan Richey, Royce Richey, Ladon Richey, David Richey, Tim Bishop, Kevin Bishop and Keith Bishop.
Hattie Hogan
Hattie Hogan, 96, of Bowie, TX passed away on February 18, 2002 in Bowie, TX.
Mrs. Hogan was born on May 26, 1905 in Dry Valley Community of Montague County. She married Levi G. Hogan on August 27, 1922 and was a homemaker. Mrs. Hogan was a member of the First Baptist Church of Bowie.
Funeral services for Mrs. Hogan were held on Wednesday, February 20, 2002 at 3:00 p.m. at Fry Funeral Home Chapel in Bowie with Rev. Ben Wiseman officiating. Interment was held in Salona Cemetery in Salona, TX.
Surviving relatives include: two daughters, Wannie Shackelford, Tulia, TX and Ollie Webb, Bowie, TX; nine grandchildren; fifteen great-grandchildren and eleven great-great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers included: Steve Cross, Jerry Weaver, Jay Drake, Scott Jordan, Rocky Whitley and Coby Whitley.
