Joyce Penton Hanson, 85, of Bowie, TX passed away on Sunday, February 17, 2002.
Mrs. Hanson was born on November 5, 1916 in Montague County. She married Hermon H. Hanson and was a homemaker. Mrs. Hanson was of the Baptist faith.
Graveside services for Mrs. Hanson were held on Thursday, February 21, 2002 at 2:00 p.m. at Rosston Cemetery in Rosston, TX with C. E. "Sonny" Cole officiating. Services were directed by Fry Funeral Home of Bowie.
Surviving relatives include: four children, Carol Jakse, Montague, TX, Paula Morford, Prairie Point, TX, Delores Boyd, Woodinville, WA, and Jim Call, Kirkland, WA; twelve grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; three sisters, Patsy Johnson, Everett, WA, Eddie Peter, Skykomish, WA, and Tunzel Crumpler, Goldbar, WA; and two brothers, Joe Penton, Henderson, NV and Lon Penton, Issaquah, WA. She was preceded in death by her husbanb, Hermon Hansen.
Opal Pearl (Meredith) Cooper
Opal Pearl (Meredith) Cooper, 91, of Muenster, TX passed away on Thursday, February 21, 2002 at Saint Richards Villa in Muenster, TX.
Mrs. Cooper was born on February 15, 1911 in Sayre, OK to Preston Arthur and Hattie D. Cagle Meredith. She married Henry Fuller in 1943 in Roswell, NM. Mr. Fuller died in 1948. Opal was a member of the Hillcrest Church of Christ in Gainesville and a homemaker. She moved from Hobart, OK to Gainesville in 1983 and then to Muenster in 1990.
Funeral services for Mrs. Cooper were held on Saturday, February 23, 2002 at 10:00 a.m. at McCoy Funeral Chapel in Muenster with Eddie Ramsey officiating. Interment was held in Scared Heart Cemetery in Muenster, TX.
Surviving relatives include: one daughter, Linda Walterscheid, Muenster, TX; three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry Fuller; her parents, Preston and Hattie Meredith; one sister, Ruby Willis; and three brothers, Ira, Dee and Arthur Meredith.
Pallbearers included: Mike Walterscheid, Duane Walterscheid, Kenny Felderhoff, Eddie Ramsey, Bert Walterscheid and Tim Walterscheid.
H. A. "Buddy" Vermillion
H.A. "Buddy" Vermillion, 66, of Nocona, TX passed away on February 13, 2002 in Nocona General Hospital.
Mr. Vermillion was born on May 9, 1935 in Greenfield, TN to Armstead and Auby Lee Pirtle Vermillion. He married Eunice Fields Vermillion on May 5, 1979 in Rockwall, TX. He had retired from Lockheed Martin after 22 years of service. He was a member of Walnut Streep Baptist Church of Nocona and had served in the Army.
Funeral services for Mr. Vermillion were held on Saturday, February 16, 2002 at 11:00 a.m. at Scott- Morris Chapel with Sunny Buckingham and John Hillis officiating. Interment was held in Nocona Cemetery under the direction of Scott Morris Funeral Home.
Surviving relatives include: his wife, Eunice Vermillion, Nocona, TX; three children, Charlott Lane, Ft. Worth, TX, Chuck Moses, Lincoln, NE, and Michele Ritchie, Nocona, TX; two sisters, Mary Kelley, Euless, TX and Mildred Padgett, Duncanville, TX; one brother, Louis "Bob" Vermillion, Grand Prairie, TX; five grandchildren, Becca, Keith and Ashley Lane, Wesley "the Boss" Barger and Brian Richie.
Pallbearers included: Barry Vermillion, Allen Vermillion, Gary Lane, Sherri Walter, Rusty Walter, Sandi Schiele and Cathy Summons. Honorary pallbearers included: Steve Kirby, Red Duell, Elmo Emmons, and David Bagley.
Letha "Bill" Sewell
Letha "Bill" Sewell, 94, of Nocona, TX passed away on Tuesday, February 19, 2002.
Mrs. Sewell was born on July 26, 1907. She was devoted to her family, church and community. She devoted herself to her many civic organizations - Meals on Wheels, the Hospital Auxiliary and the blood mobile. Mrs. Sewell was recognized as the Nocona Volunteer of the Year in 2000.
Funeral services for Mrs. Sewell were held on Thursday, February 21, 2002 at 1:30 p.m.at the First Baptist Church in Nocona. Interment was held in Nocona Cemetery under the direction of Scott-Morris Funeral Home.
Surviving relatives include: her children, Sue Reid, Wichita Falls, TX, Joyce Freeman, Saint Jo, TX, and Jim Sewell, Austin, TX; one daughter-in-law, Ruth Sewell, Nocona, TX; two brothers, Glenn Walker, Nocona, TX and Mason Walker, Wharton, TX; twelve grandchildren and twenty great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one daughter, Billie Yeager; one son, Jack Sewell and one grandson, Jeff Sewell.
Pallbearers included: Donald Bond, John Carter, John Hampton, Michael Lemley, Jordan Sewell and Jon Reid.
Roy Gene Williams
Roy Gene Williams, 67, of Bowie, TX passed away on February 22, 2002 in Bowie Memorial Hospital.
Mr. Williams was born on May 22, 1934 in Bowie, TX. He married Donna Jeannene Howie on December 29, 1955 in Bowie, TX. He worked for the United States Post Office for 37 years and served as Post Master the last 4-5 years. He retired from the postal service in 1990. Mr. Williams’ achievements included serving on the Board of Directors for the United Fund and Jim Bowie Days; serving as a member of the Bowie City Council for 14 years, a member of the Bowie Volunteer Fire Department for 45 years, and a Bowie Volunteer Fire Chief for 14 years. He was a lifetime member of First Baptist Church; a member of Bowie Masonic Lodge #578; a member of Maskat Shrine Temple of Wichita Falls, TX; a member of Scottish Rite Bodies of Fort Worth Consistory and current President of Montague Scottish Rite Organization.
Funeral services for Mr. Williams were held on Monday, February 25, 2002 at 10:00 a.m. at First Baptist Church with Rev. Joe Taylor and Rev. Dick Hennings officiating. Interment was held in Elmwood Cemetery under the direction of Fry Funeral Home. Masonic Graveside Rites were conducted by the Bowie Masonic Lodge #578 AF & AM.
Surviving relatives include: his wife, Donna Williams, Bowie, TX; one son, Tony Williams, Bowie, TX; one daughter, Tresa Haggard, Bowie, TX; three grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Geneva Schonsted, Mission Vejio, CA and Roberta Penson, Holden Beach, NC; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Roy O. and Alma Williams.
Pallbearers included: Bill Duvall, James Scruggs, Lee Wayne Jones, Ronnie Hankins, Charles Garrett and Thomas St. John. Honorary pallbearers included: all firefighters - past and present, Larry Sanders, James McCash and Joe Mayfield.
Austin F. Barton
Austin F. Barton, 64, of Bowie, TX passed away on February 22, 2002 in Bowie, TX.
Mr. Barton was born on February 19, 1938 in Rockwood, TX. He married Betty Bennett on January 30, 1974 in Midland, TX. He was the Louisiana General Manager of GrantPrideco, previous business owner and served in the U.S. Army in Germany and Lebanon. Mr. Barton was a longtime resident of Morgan City, LA before moving to Bowie, TX three months ago.
Funeral services for Mr. Barton were held on Monday, February 25, 2002 at 3:00 p.m. at Post Oak Baptist Church with Rev. Dick Hennings officiating. Interment was held in Post Oak Cemetery in Post Oak, TX under the direction of Fry Funeral Home of Bowie, TX.
Surviving relatives include: his wife, Betty Charlene Barton, Morgan City, LA; three daughters, Teresa Barton, Lafayette, LA, Debbie Robertson, Columbia, LA and Austrene Barton, Pasadena, TX; one son, Bobby Barton, Pasadena, TX; four grandchildren, Kenneth Devalcourt, Morgan City, LA, Austin Ritchey, Lafayette, LA, Kyle Devalcourt, Columbia, LA and Breanna Wagner, Port Neches, TX; one sister, Vera Mae Garner, Quinlan, TX; three brothers, Buddy Barton, Midland, TX, Joe "Buck Shot" Barton, Altus, AR, and Stanley Barton, Quinlan, TX; one blood brother, Dearl Gunter, Richardson, TX; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Dora Bell Oxford
Dora Bell Oxford, 96 of Nocona, TX, passed away on February 26, 2002 in Nocona Nursing Home.
Mrs. Oxford was born on September 23, 1905 to Thomas Benjamin and Annie Gann Richardson in Montague County, Texas. She was a member of the Landmark Missionary Baptist Church of Nocona. Mrs. Oxford was a homemaker.
Services for Mrs. Oxford were held on Thursday, February 28, 2002 at 2:00 p.m. in the Scott-Morris Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Johnny Frank Davis officiating. Interment was held in the Nocona Cemetery.
Survivors include: three children, Corinne Glass of Wichita Falls, TX, Irene Nolan of Fort Worth, TX, and Rena Shewmake of Ryan, OK; three sisters, Fannie Sims and Kate Sturdeant, both of Fort Worth, TX, and Roma Hill of Corpus Christi, TX; 16 grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.
