Jessie Lily O’Brien Phagan
Jessie Lily O’Brien Phagan, 89, of Wichita Falls, TX passed away on February 23, 2002 at University Park Health and Rehab in Wichita Falls.
Mrs. Phagan was born on May 22, 1912 in Vashti, TX. She married John Clarence Phagan on September 28, 1939 in Wichita Falls, TX. She was a homemaker and a member of the St. Marks United Methodist Church in Wichita Falls, TX. Mrs. Phagan was also a longtime member of the Vashti United Methodist Church in Vashti, TX where she was a member of the United Methodist Women’s Organization and served in many offices within that organization.
Funeral services for Mrs. Phagan were held on Tuesday, February 26, 2002 at 11:00 a.m. at the Vashti United Methodist Church in Vashti, TX with Rev. Lewis Ray Sleeth officiating. Interment was held on Vashti Cemetery in Vashti, TX under the direction of Fry Funeral Home of Bowie.
Surviving relatives include: one daughter, Linda Green, Wichita Falls, TX; two grandchildren, Craig McWhirter, Wichita Falls, TX, and Mrs. Kellie Kite, Cypress, TX; six great-grandchildren; three sisters, Mrs. Helen Weems, Mrs. Patsy Chadwick and Mrs. Myra Nell Blackerby, all of Wichita Falls, TX; two brothers, Tom O’Brien, Byers, TX and Gene O’Brien, Wichita Falls, TX and numerous nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers include: Billy Don Starnes, Dean Sanders, David Denson, Kenneth Liggett, Thomas Sanders, and J.C. Goodin.
Ken Hammond
Ken Hammond, 74, Bowie, TX passed away on February 18, 2002 in Dallas, TX.
Mr. Hammond was born on February 17, 1928 in Flint, Michigan. He married Helen E. Hammond and moved to Bowie in 1984. He was a carpenter and a member of the Central Baptist Church in Bowie. He was also a member of the VFW Post 8789 in Bowie and The American Legion.
Funeral services for Mr. Hammond were held on Friday, February 22, 2002 at 10:00 a.m. at Fry Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Don Haney officiating. Interment was held in Dallas/Fort Worth National Cemetery.
Surviving relatives include: his wife, Helen Hammond, Bowie, TX; four sons, Kenneth Hammond, Jr., Justin, TX, Bill Hicks, Houston, TX, Paul Hicks, Bridgeport, TX and Jim Tom Hicks, Bowie, TX; five daughters, Nancy Vanhorn, Vickie Mitchell, and Kimberly Valadez, all of Michigan, Cindy Lewis and Nancy Hicks, both of Bowie; four brothers, Glen, Fred and Bob Hammond, all of Michigan and Bill Hammond, Alabama; five sisters, Mable Knight, Michigan, Etta Scarbough, Nellie Lyons, Betty Sessions and Shirley Savage, all of Mississippi; numerous grandchildren; great-grandchildren; and great-great-grandchildren. Mr. Hammond was preceded in death by a wife, Arline Hammond; one son, George Hammond and one brother, Clar Hammond.
The Military Honor Guard served as pallbearers.
Melba Dean (Hewitt) Bell
Melba Dean (Hewitt) Bell, 77, of Nocona, TX passed away on February 27, 2002 in Nocona General Hospital.
Mrs. Bell was born on November 3, 1924 in Belcherville, TX to Samuel Edward and Rhoda Zella Richie Hewitt. She married Morris Leon Bell on November 29, 1943 in Waurika, OK. They settled in Nocona to work and raise their four children. Mrs. Hewitt worked as a cook for Nocona Schools for many years so she could be close to her children. She and her family opened Bell’s Drive-In in 1964 and operated it for 28 years. The "Bell Burger" became a favorite to countless customers who grew to know "Ma Bell" as a mother away from home and special friend to all. The family closed the business in 1992 so she could spend more time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren who knew and loved her as their "MeMe". Mrs. Bell was also a member of the Church of Christ.
Funeral services for Mrs. Bell were held on Saturday, March 2, 2002 at 11:00 a.m. at the Church of Christ with Dale Scott and Mike Russell officiating. Interment was held in Nocona Cemetery under the direction of Scott Morris Funeral Home of Nocona, TX.
Surviving relatives include: her husband, Morris Bell, Nocona, TX; three children, Sonya Bell and Roy Bell, both of Nocona, TX and Ronnal Bell, Montague, TX; two sisters, Darlene Stewart, Nocona, TX and Imogene Hutson, Bowie, TX; eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her grandparents, parents, two infant brothers, Weldon Lavaughn and Alfred Davis; one son, Samuel Morris; and great-granddaughter, Samantha Ann Blevins.
Pallbearers included: Bobby Bell, Brady Bell, Chad Bell, John Howard Bell, Bob Hamric, Mike Hewitt and Jarrod Middleton.
Hazel Eloise Plumlee
Hazel Eloise Plumlee, 83, of Nocona, TX passed away on March 4, 2002 at Horizon Manor Nursing Home in Nocona, TX.
Mrs. Plumlee was born on August 20, 1918 in Belcherville, TX to McCormick (Mack) Neal and Florence Mae Lowrie Swearingin. She married Howard Plumlee on September 24, 1943. Mrs. Plumlee was a homemaker and a member of Bethel Baptist Church.
Funeral services for Mrs. Plumlee were held on Thursday, March 7, 2002 at 1:00 p.m. at Bethel Baptist Church with Rev. Scott Moore officiating. Interment was held in Belcherville Cemetery under the direction of Scott Morris Funeral Home.
Surviving relatives include: her husband, Howard; two brothers, M.C. Swearingin, Ogden, UT and Randal Swearingin, Frankston, TX; and a host of nieces and nephews. Mrs. Plumlee was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters, Agnus Pace and Juanita Baird.
Pallbearers included: Steve Kirby, Jerry Painter, Farrell Fenner and Jerry Johnson. Honorary pallbearer included: C. B. Crenshaw.
Ralph Lee Royston, Sr
Ralph Lee Royston, Sr., 67, of Bowie, TX passed away on March 3, 2002 in Bowie, TX.
Mr. Royston was born on August 8, 1934 in Decatur, TX. He was a retired parts specialist at Sheppard Air Force Base. He was a member of the Reddy-McClellan VFW Post #8789 in Bowie, a member of the Speake-Meyer American Legion Post #252 in Bowie, and a member of the Air Force Sergeants Association. Mr. Royston was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, 3 Bronze Stars and other decorations.
Funeral services for Mr. Royston were held on Wednesday, March 6, 2002 at 10:00 a.m. at Fry Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Sandy Sanderson officiating. Interment was held in Briar Creek Cemetery in Bowie. TX.
Surviving relatives include: three sons, Ralph Royston, Jr., Wellington, KS, Kenneth Royston, Stafford, VA, and Paul Royston, Fall River, KS; one daughter, Mrs. Margaret (Maggie) Daniels, Sedgewick, KS; twelve grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Wilma Ruth Rohus, Bowie, TX; one brother, George Royston, Lewisville, TX; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers included: Chico Gardner, Max Gardner, Bill Large, James Henry, James Smith and Jim Beverage. Honorary pallbearers included: Cecil Atkins, Billy Sanford, Ardell Robertson and Cliff Bailey. Flag bearers included: Bob Gamble, Bob Briggs and Elmer Defrates.
Joe D. Vieth
Joe D. Vieth, 65, of Bowie, TX passed away on March 23, 2002 in Bowie, TX.
Mr. Vieth was born on February 22, 1937 in Graham, Texas. He married Cleta Faye Davis on February 15, 1958 in Borger, TX. He taught school for 23 years, retiring in 1985 from the Bowie Public Schools as the Distributive Education Teacher.
Funeral services for Mr. Vieth were held on Tuesday, March 26, 2002 at 2:00 p.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Windthorst, TX with Rev. Stephen Berg officiating. Services were directed by Fry Funeral Home of Bowie, TX.
Surviving relatives include: his wife, Cleta Vieth, Bowie, TX; two sons, Mark Vieth, Haltom City, TX and Gary Vieth, Bowie, TX; six grandchildren; one brother, Joe Vieth, Jr., Tulsa, OK; and several nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers included: Bernard Hilbers, Pat Casey, Raymond Clements, Gary Brewer, John Gossett, and Don McCarty.
Harreldeane Pollard
Harreldeane Pollard, 58, of Burkburnett, TX passed away on March 23, 2002 in Wichita Falls, TX.
Mrs. Pollard was born on June 8, 1943 in Bowie, TX. She grew up in Bowie and Borger, TX and spent most of her working life in Borger. Mrs. Pollard lived with her family and settled in Burkburnett, TX. She was a retired LVN and of the Christian faith.
Graveside services for Mrs. Pollard were held on Wednesday, March 27, 2002 at 11:00 a.m. at Elmwood Cemetery with Rev. David Beaumeler officiating. Services were directed by Fry Funeral Home of Bowie.
Surviving relatives include: one daughter, Mrs. Tyra Hickerson, Burkburnett, TX; two grandchildren; her stepmother, Juanita Pollard, Bowie, TX; four brothers, Harold Pollard, Vega, TX, Greg Pollard, Denton, TX, Randy Pollard, Bowie, TX, and Gary Gresham, Ft. Worth, TX; and several nieces and nephews.
Honorary pallbearers included: Kenneth McKay, Jerry McKay, Gary Gresham, Jack Ritchie, Michael Rammage and Jared Rammage.
