Josephine Murchison Cooksey
Josephine Murchsion Cooksey, 96, of Rice passed away Thursday, July 18, 2002 in Corsicana.
Graveside services will be 2 p.m. today at Oakwood Cemetery with the Rev. Mike Alexander officiating.
Mrs. Cooksey was born Aug. 9, 1905 in Corsicana. She same from a pioneer family of the 1830s. Her father, John Smith Murchison, was a former mayor of Corsicana. She was a teacher and a member of the Retired Teachers Association, as well as the DAR. She was a lifetime member of the First United Methodist Church of Corsicana.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert M. Cooksey Sr.; son, James Randall Cooksey; parrents, John Smith and Daisy Polk Murchison; brothers, W.P. Murchison and John L. Murchison; and sisters, Martha Murchison and Iza Wallin Conine.
Mrs. Cooksey is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Robert M. and Diane Cooksey Jr. of Chatfield; daughter and son-in-law, Carolyn and Neil Duckworth of Rockwall; grandsons, Rober Cooksey III of Korea, James W. Cooksey of Ft. Hood, and Edward Duckworth and Robert L. Duckworth, both of Rockwall; granddaughter, Susan M. Cooksey of Dallas; great-grandson, Matthew Duckworth of Rockwall; great-granddaughter, Laura Duckworth of Rockwall; and sisters-in-law, Dorothy Murchison of Corsicana and Helen Murchison Landers of Waco.

Lois Katherine Bumpass
Lois Katherine Bumpass, 84, of Waco passed away Friday, July 19, 2002 at Providence Hospital in Waco.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at Griffin-Roughton Funeral Home in Fairfield.
Services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at New Hope Baptist Church in Winkler with Brother Elton McCain. Interment will follow at St. Elmo Cemetery.
She was born Dec. 19, 1917 in Little Rock, Ark. She was a member of the Church of Christ.
Survivors include her sons, Dudley Bumpass of St. Elmo, Charles Bumpass of Lewisville and Peter Bumpass of South Holland, Ill.; daughter, Katherine Sanner of Georgetown; 20 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren.

John Edward Brewer
John Edward Brewer, 75, of Corsicana, passed away Saturday, May 18, 2002 in San Augustine County.
Services will be 2 p.m. today at Corley Funeral Chapel with Steve Orbison and Brother Lou Dane officiating. Interment will follow at Hamilton-Beeman Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be James Bass, Kent Randall, David Brewer, John Brown, Jackie Dunlap, J.V. Lewis, Wilbur Lewis, David Reagan and Herb Roop. Honorary pallbearers will be grandsons and sons-in-law.
Mr. Brewer was born March 29, 1927 in Hamilton County. His parents, Bill and Belle Brewer were farmers, and after a 18-month stay in the military during World War II, he became one too. In 1947 he married Faye Christine Golden of DeLeon. She and their son, John Weldon Brewer preceded him in death during the polio epidemic of 1948.
While married to Christine, Mr. Brewer raised peanuts in Comanche County, but after marrying Rachel Lewis of Gorman in 1950, they moved to Navarro County where he raised cotton and grain. He and Rachel had three daughters while living in Brown's Valley in Navarro County.
After the death of his father, he and his wife moved to Corsicana where he spent the next few years working for the county. He worked for 13 years for the U.S. Gypsum Co. before beginning his own backhoe business in 1971. His primary business was for Corley Funeral Home. He continued to own and operate Hilltop Backhoe Service until he retired in 1999. Two of his grandsons continue the work. His other enterprises included cattle and ranching, owning and operating Hilltop Feed & Seed and Manuel's Restaurant.
Through the years, he always found a little time to go fishing and a lot of time to love his grandchildren. He will be greatly missed.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Christine Brewer; son, John Weldon Brewer; parents, Bill and Belle Brewer; brother, William Brewer; great-granddaughter, Samantha Rasco; and nephew, Larry Brewer.
He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Rachel Brewer of Corsicana; daughters and sons-in-law, Carolyn and Solon Bailey of Trinidad, Linda and Butch Earnest of San Augustine and Janet and Ovie Earles of Corsicana; granddaughters, Audra Trimble and husband Clay of San Augustine, Kathy Wood and husband Chris of Corsicana, Kim Tramel and husband Bill of Navasota, Kristy Rasco and husband Calvin of Blooming Grove, Laura Bennefield and husband Brent of San Augustine, and Kahlayah Bailey and fiancˇ Roy Collins of College Station; grandsons, John Edward Brewer II and wife Christina of Corsicana, EOCR Matthew Earnest, U.S. Navy, and fiancee Melissa Sanders of San Augustine and Jason Earles and fiancee Ellen Hand of Corsicana; great-grandsons, Josiah Bennefield of San Augustine, Tyler Trimble of San Augustine, Cody Bennefield of San Augustine, Zachery Brewer of Corsicana, Trevor Wood of Corsicana and Kendall Tramel of Navasota; aunt, Ila Mae Oringderff of Fort Worth; brothers-in-law, J.V. Lewis and wife Nada of Gorman and Wilbur Lewis and wife Gail of Grand Prairie; numerous cousins and a big host of friends.
Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of one's choice.

Jewell 'Judy' Johnson Copeland
Jewell "Judy" Johnson Copeland, 79, of Houston passed away Sunday, May 19, 2002 in Houston.
Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Corley Funeral Home.
Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Corley Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Ken Lane officiating. Interment will follow at Oakwood Cemetery in Waco.
Mrs. Copeland was born June 18, 1922 in Pursley. She was a resident of Corsicana State Orphan's Home from 1929 to 1940, graduating from the state home in 1940, and was a member of the Ex-Students Alumni Association. She was a member of St. Paul Presbyterian Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James Mann Copeland.
Survivors include her daughter, Cathy Copeland of Houston; son, Daniel Michael Copeland of Houston; brother, Charlie Wayne Johnson of Dunnellon, Fla.; sisters, Amy McRoble of Mansfield and Adele Cook of Temple; and grandsons, Tobin Christopher Copeland and Clayton Copeland.

Lucy Helen Russell Rose, 82, of Austin passed away Saturday, May 18, 2002.
Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home, 3125 N. Lamar, Austin.
Services will be 1 p.m. Thursday at Northwest Hills United Methodist Church, 7050 Village Center Drive, Austin, with the Rev. Dana Hamilton of Northwest Hills United Methodist Church and the Rev. Robert Bosworth of All Saints Episcopal Church in Fort Worth officiating. Interment will follow at Austin Memorial Park.
Mrs. Rose was born Aug. 15, 1919 in Corsicana to Jack and Nell Russell.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard M. Rose; and brother, Jack Russell Jr.
Survivors include her daughter, Dianne Rose and husband David Robbins of Fort Worth; sister, Dorothy Russell of Austin; sister-in-law, Dorothy Miley Russell of Corsicana; granddaughter, Amy and husband David Hagen of Fort Worth; grandson, Michael Richards of Dallas; three great-grandchildren and a niece and nephew.

Michael Jack Reed
Michael Jack Reed, 54, of Kerens passed away Friday, May 17, 2002 at his residence.
Services will be 1 p.m. today at Restland Abbey Chapel, Greenville Avenue, Dallas.
Mr. Reed was born Feb. 21, 1948 in Kansas City, Mo. He was a two-year veteran of Vietnam, serving in the U.S. Army.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Theresa Merian Reed on May 23, 1992.
Survivors include his wife of 12 years, Dawn Reed; children, Roy Michael Reed, Kelly Anne Reed, Gregory Thomas Reed and Danielle Marie Reed; grandson, Zachary Jordan Norsworthy; two stepchildren; father, Jack Edward Reed; and sister, Patricia Merian Reed.

Pauline Cry Whiddon Boyd
Pauline Cry Whiddon Boyd, 90, of Pasadena and formerly of Waco, passed away Sunday, May 19, 2002 at a Pasadena hospital.

Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Wade Funeral Chapel with the Rev. James Hooper officiating. Interment will be Fairview Cemetery in Hubbard.
Mrs. Boyd was born Nov. 26, 1911 in Hubbard. She was raised in the Bowman community and was a longtime seamstress in Waco. She was also a member of the Baptist church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Melvin Boyd and her parents, George and Beulah Mitchell Cry.
She is survived by her sons, Glynn Whiddon of Pasadena and Bobby Frank and Ruth Whiddon of Pasadena; seven grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.

Mildred Estelle Darby Grice
Mildred Estelle Darby Grice, 94, of Chandler passed away Friday, May 17, 2002 at a Tyler nursing center.
Family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Wade Funeral Home.
Services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Wade Funeral Chapel with Bob Grice officiating. Interment will follow at Fairview Cemetery in Hubbard.
Mrs. Grice was born May 4, 1908 at Fort Statton, N.M. She had lived in Chandler for the past 30 years after having previously lived in Houston. She had taught school in New Mexico for 25 years and later had been in charge of department store invoices for 15 years. She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star No. 5 of New Mexico and also a member of Alpha Kappa Chapter of Epsilon Sigma Alpha Sorority in Houston. While she was in college she was a member of Alpha Chi Omega sorority. She was a member of the Episcopal church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Vernon Grice on Feb. 20, 1997.
Survivors include nieces and nephews including Joan and Winter Moore of Silver Spring, Md., Jan Shaw McCoy of Rock Hill, S.C. and Jim Darby of colonial Beach, Va.
